The Newport Mansions of the Gilded Age were stunning example of the period, and this book covers those houses preserved and operated by the Trust. Educational and well-written and illustrated. Visit, buy and read!
Nice pictures to peruse at home, but not enough to show you a full picture of each house to prevent you from taking the tour (again). Interesting reading about all the different owners and builders.
I've toured the Breakers mansion twice (once back in the late-eighties with a tour guide and just a couple of years ago with a self-guided tour, which was much more enjoyable). It's a place you've got to see to believe! I bought this book because I wanted memories of that incredible house, but it was just as much fun to see photos of the other Newport mansions--ten in all along the famous Cliff Walk. I enjoyed the historical and architectural information as much as the photos.
It was a lovely book and brought back memories of the houses I visited. It contained a lot of historical information, background about the people who lived there, and info about the architectural styles. However, I would have enjoyed more photos.
For a basic guidebook it is good. Obviously if you are looking for more in depth historical, artistic, architectural, or biographical information other sources would be more appropriate, but for an overview of the houses with lovely pictures and basic information it is a great tour book.
