This is quite simply a wonderful book that will make you want to plant your very own memory tree.

I was swept away into the story from the start. As soon as Grace finds out about the mysterious holiday her Mum had arranged for her before she passed away, I was intrigued about the secrets that she would uncover along the way. The story unfolded slowly and meant that chapter after chapter were full of interesting twists and turns, and revelations that took me completely by surprise.

The hero of the story, Royal Marine, Alasdair, was such a strong character, yet with a very soft centre. In my eyes he was the perfect gentleman and I was desperate for romance to develop between him and Grace.

By the time I had finished this book I felt drained, but in a good way. I'd been on such a journey with the characters. There were tears, and I was nearly screaming at Grace at one point, not wanting her to miss her chance of true love. Yet along side this, the story was one full of hope and optimism which made for a really inspiring read.

If you read this book you will be treated to a journey passing through many wonderful settings, with very realistic and loveable characters, experiencing raw emotions that will keep you gripped through every page. I thoroughly recommend it.

I'm afraid unlike most of the reviews, I didn't warm to this book at all. I was initially intrigued to understand what the whole reading of the letters was going to reveal, but didn't feel it amounted to much and the pairing/flirting between the two on the trip didn't really set me alight. I did feel it was chick lit and was far too gentle to become a page turner.

This book is really different; but in a good way. It has a romantic side to it, but it isn't just another chick-lit romance. It is much deeper than that, and funny too. It celebrates the best of the British landscape and acknowledges the modern day dilemma of fighting for Queen and Country for causes that are not always clear cut.

Melanie Hudson has created great characters in Grace and Alasdair, who are thrown together by the meddling of Grace's mother. I don't want to say too much about the plot or it would spoil a good read, however, if you are looking for something that will make you laugh one minute and cry the next, this is definitely for you.

I predict this book will be huge one day, and if I was a movie director I would definitely want to option this for a film.

I loved this book- one of those books that makes you think. I had recently read something that asked if you were planning a journey of the 5 most important places to you- which would you pick and this book has the same base.

When Grace loses her mother, she receives notification that she has to see the solicitor in 6 months time. She is told that her mother has left instructions for her ashes to be spread in different locations and that she has arranged for a Marine to accompany her and pass on letters at each spot to reveal why that place is important and to let her know about her history.

She learns some surprising things, not least that her mum was keen for her to start a relationship with Alasdair and learn to conquer her fears over singing in public again.

They both have issues in their past to deal with and initially fight the attraction. But despite herself she finds herself enjoying the challenges her mum has set in place.

I could perfectly picture St Christopher's retreat where she grew up and each place her mum wanted her to visit. I enjoyed every page and was sad to come to the end. I will definately add Melanie Hudson to my list of authors to watch out for!

Many thanks to Net Galley for a chance to read this one.

I loved this story, it's a book that makes you think
At the death of her mother Grace discovers that she had organized a trip to spread her ashes: she must bring it to some places very dear to her in the company of a marine.
The descriptions are so vivid that it really seems to visit England with Grace and Alasdair. The characters are great and lovable
If you want a book that makes you cry and laughing, this is perfect for you

Grace lost her mother 6 months ago and it's time for the will. Oh her mum was a strange one because Grace is sent on a journey to learn more about her mum. With her she has a hunky solider named Alasdair. I see what you did there mum ;).

Did I approve of the journey? Yes and no. It was a lovely thing to do and to find out about your mother's past. It was a hard thing to do to find out about your mother and the things she had not said.

The book takes Grace from place to place. Special ones to her mum, and she has letters to read at each step. Telling her a story she did not know.

Alasdair is there with her to give her guidance, he knew her mum too. But it's also obvious her mother put him there so maybe something would grow. She also wants Grace to find her way and passion again.

There is romance, but this is not a romance. It's a journey. They get to know each other, slowly to become friends, and then maybe maybe something will grow, slowly. He is broken at times, she is lost. But they are a good fit, and of course it will have a happy ending too. It might not be a contemporary romance but of course I will give you a HEA :)

Her mother's life was interesting to read about. But she had also been one stubborn woman! Too stubborn. It was a bit sad at times too, not crying sad, just sad about the stubbornness of some people.

A journey, a mystery and a romance to be had.

I received this book from the publisher, for review, from Netgalley.
This is a truly wonderful story. It deals with loss and love and so much more that words just can't express in this review. It is about finding what truly makes you happy and to take chances in life. You never know how things will turn out unless you give it a go. It is extremely well written and flows effortlessly throughout. Some of the English terms threw me at first, but not for long, as I became immersed into this world. In this book I traveled far and wide, I climbed mountains and I fell in love. I absolutely loved the characters in this book. They are not only well developed, but are so realistic, it is like I know them personally. You may need some tissues on hand, I know that I did. I will definitely be reading more from this author and from Choc Lit. I know I thought it was supposed to be Chic Lit also. But they have some amazing books and I must read them all. Do not miss out on this exquisite read. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend it to you all. Well done Melanie Hudson!

I so very much enjoyed this book, I was hooked after reading the first chapter. What an unusual way to write a book describing how a deceased Mom decides to make her daughter aware of her life story by having her visits places of importance in her past, and having her read a letter at each destination explaining why that particular country, city, mountain had such an impact on her life
and also ensuring that she travels with a trusted friend.
I read this book in one day could not put in down. It gave me laughter and tears but left me with feelings that I wanted it to going on and on.
Highly recommend this novel and to me it did not feel like chick lit at all.
Looking forward to more of Melanie Hudson's writings.

A fabulous read.

After her mother dies, Grace is sent on a journey with an escort and a series of letters from her mother to be opened at set destinations.
It is a journey of discovery for Grace as bit by bit, secrets from the past are revealed, and as she progresses, forces her to re-assess where she will head in the future.
A well written page turner for me, and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I think The Wedding Cake Tree was for me this year's biggest surprise. I must be honest, I have expected something different when I started this book, something casual, something totally different, but after reading the first few pages of this story I had a feeling that I am keeping a real gem in my hands.

I think this review is going to be a very short one because I can't say a bad word about this book!

Straight to the point, from the very beginning we know what's going to happen in the story, and I liked this idea very much. We know that Grace is going on a trip with a strange man, and that the trip is organized by her deceased mother. Reading the first pages I have thought, oh my, this lawyer and his turtle, what's up, doc, but then the story smoothly takes us on a great adventure.
Grace is actually forced to take this trip by her mother's will. Her mother wanted Grace to get to know Rosamund's real self because, as it looks, she didn't tell her daughter the truth about her or her family the whole life. She sends Grace on a journey to the places which were important to her, which were significant for her, places where something happened. So Grace must drop everything, her work - assignment, friends, house and travel through the country and abroad, in a company of a man that she doesn't know and feels that doesn't need, but that Rosamund insisted, should go with her. He is carrying letters from Rosamund, which Grace should read in every significant place that they visit.
RAF is very often mentioned in this book, and being an ex - RAF Melanie knows exactly what she's writing about. The descriptions of the job were fantastic and felt totally real.

And so we are taken on a fantastic, beautiful, brilliant journey, a journey that have me hooked from the very beginning, a journey full of adventures, new people, new places, sunrises and sunsets. At the beginning I have thought what kind of mother Rosamund was, why didn't she tell Grace the truth in person, but after reading all her letters I think that I can see her point. The letters were painfully honest and it is sometimes the easier way to explain everything than when speaking face to face. The letters were also a kind of dare for Grace, although she didn't know this, with Rosamund pushing her to do things she would never have done, things that would make Grace feel stronger and self - confident.
I really liked Grace and I loved seeing how she develops through her adventures, how she's becoming an open - minded, brave and strong woman and how she learns to put her dreams first. I don't know how I would react for such news about my mother but I liked the way she came to terms with the whole situation: of course she was a little disappointed with her mother and felt cheated and scared, but she didn't react too hysterically, didn't feel too offended and just grasped the nettle, took the risk and left for the adventure of her life.
And then we have Alasdair, the stranger accompanying Grace. Oh my God, I am so missing heroes like he in the books that I read! We don't often get such a brilliant male character. He was fair, he was brave, he was nice, he was smart, he was life - experienced and he was handsome, and I would fall in love with him immediately.

What I loved about those two characters is, that when they set their minds on something, they just went for it. Also when it was about their feelings about each other. I loved the chemistry between them, because there was a lot of sparkling and electricity for me, but it was all fantastically tasteful and a little old - fashioned, especially when we think Alasdair.

I also didn't know where the book is going to take me next, what should I expect, what kind of adventure is awaiting me on the next page and it made the story more brilliant. Full of twists and turns that every time took me by surprise and made my reading full of joy. The descriptions were so colourful and vivid that I could smell the sea and see the colours by myself, I felt like I was joining Grace and Alasdair on their trip personally. It doesn't often happen that such detailed, long descriptions of situations, scenery or landscapes are so beautiful and written in such engaging, not at all boring way.

This was a beautiful, uplifting read. A book that will never be boring, doesn't matter how often you are going to read it! A book that I am not going to forget very soon and one that made me think. I have enjoyed every minute reading the story and I just can recommend it to all of you - go and buy your copy, you wouldn't regret it!

I had an e-copy of this book from Choc-lit.com in exchange for an honest review which I'm more than happy to give.

I started this book intending to read a little bit with a coffee and literally didn't stop until I'd finished it! It is so beautifully written and I was compelled to keep reading, wanting to know what happened next but at the same time not wanting it to end. It's one of the few books I've read recently that left me bereft when I turned the last page, a story that will stay with me for a long time if not forever.

Grace attends the reading of her mums will and is completely thrown to find out that before she is eligible to inherit she must go on a journey of discovery. Her mum has written a series of letters beginning with one which she has to read in the solicitors office. This was totally unexpected and heart breaking for her. I had tears in my eyes and the book had only just begun. Imagine discovering the mother you knew and loved has led a life before you were born that you know absolutely nothing about! Add to that the Marine her mum has lined up to accompany her and we were in for an adventure.

This book pulled at my heart strings, I think I felt every emotion possible reading it and what made it particularly special was the journey itself. Melanie's descriptions were so vivid I could have been on the journey with Grace and Alasdair. Only realising just how accurate the place descriptions were when they travelled to Scotland. I've spent several holidays around the west coast of Scotland, it is one of my favourite places to go and I knew most of the places they visited, I could vividly see myself standing in the same spots - and I have had hot chocolate at the top of the Cairngorms in the Ptarmigan restaurant!!

I'd say nobody knows a person better than their mother and Rosamund's understanding of Grace was just beautiful to read - she succeeded in death to achieve what she failed at in life, pushing Grace gently into doing things she knew would ultimately make her a stronger person. Sending Alasdair along supposedly to keep an eye out for Grace - not totally untrue but she was pulling his strings too! Rosamund perhaps took the cowards way out, writing a series of letters instead of telling the her story to Grace whilst she was alive.

The Wedding Cake Tree succeeded in making me see, life is too short, we should grab our chances whilst we can and make the most of every day. It's far too easy to get caught up in the day to day drudge, forgetting to make time for the people and things we love - lives not just about working and paying the bills.

One of the wonderful things about this book was it was full of surprises, it was difficult to predict what was coming next and the story twisted and turned evoking different emotions with each chapter, keeping me hooked right to the final page

This was a beautiful book, one I've already recommended to several friends and I've discovered the Wedding Cake Tree is a real tree, not just a lovely description given to a pretend tree. A truly lovely idea to plant a tree at significant times and watch it grow as your relationships/children grow too.

Thank you to Choc Lit for providing me with a copy of The Wedding Cake Tree for review purposes.

The Wedding Cake Tree was a bit of a surprise for me. From the title, I expected the book to be a fairly light hearted piece, yet it proved to be a poignant and heartfelt story. It is the tale of Grace and her adventures as she follows her deceased mother, Rosamund’s, footsteps on a journey to learn the truths that her mother had not had time to impart to Grace whilst still alive. The journey allows her to get to know and understand her mother, whilst also learning about her extended family.

Grace’s journey is guided by a bundle of letters, written by Rosamund just prior to her death, leaving Grace to each new place and explaining the significance of that place through Rosamund’s eyes. The letters are very honest and, to some degree, painful for Grace, yet they allow Grace to really hear her mother’s story and, along with the accompanying adventures, help Grace to grow into the person her mother knew she could be.

Having recently experienced a death in my family, I found this story to be very touching. We take it for granted that we know our parents and grandparents, yet in reality, a lot of us have only a snapshot of their life before us.

The Wedding Cake Tree evoked feelings of joy and sadness in me in equal measures. I thought that it was lovely that Grace has this journey to go on, following in her mother’s footsteps, in a way which brings her mother more to life for Grace. However, I also felt sadness at the realisation of how little we sometimes know about those we truly love.

The locations that Grace visits are well thought out and tie in perfectly with the development of the story. The author pays particular attention to the locations and paints colourful and vivid descriptions for the reader. This enabled me to join Grace and Alisdair on their journey, picturing in my mind’s eye the places that they were visiting.

There are a few twists throughout the story (something every good book should have!) which keeps the reader on their toes and stopped the tale from becoming too predictable.

The book is not only a mother/daughter tale of discovery, but also a charming romance cunningly instigated by the cunning Rosamund. The love interest, Alisdair, is a wonderful addition to the story, handsome, confident and supportive, making sure that Grace is able to fulfil her mother’s last wish. I spent the second half of the book hoping that theirs would be a happy ending.

There is quite a few mentions of the RAF in the book and I am assuming this is because the author is ex-military herself. This element was not overdone and tied in nicely with the overall story.

I found The Wedding Cake Tree to be a touching, charming and uplifting story, reminding us to enjoy life and to make sure that we don’t take our loved ones for granted. It has spurred me on to ask more questions of my parents, as even the smallest bit of information helps me to know them just that little bit better. It is beautifully written and a joy to read.

Grace returned to London after the death of Rosamund but is back in Devon six months later for the reading of her will.

Grimes, the solicitor (wearing no shoes or socks and with Terry the tortoise on the desk), explains to Grace the conditions that she needs to meet before the will can be read. She doesn’t believe it’s happening … it feels very surreal!

Conditions: Five destinations and five letters in 10 days. She must set off with Alasdair on the same day.

Visiting the Yorkshire Dales, the Scottish mountains, Zagreb and Arisaig, Rosamund’s life unfolds. All the time, Grace is being drawn to Alasdair but his job means that he can’t get close to anyone and the things that he’s witnessed means that he has his own scars.

Each stop is amazing! Rosamund’s life, from childhood until she fell pregnant with Grace, is adventurous and exciting. Through her letters, we get to know her too. Fascinating character.

Interspersed with Grace reflecting on her childhood and her time at the London Academy of Music, we get to feel the whole picture.

St Christopher’s sounds just wonderful. The writing is so evocative that it was easy to see myself at the ford with Grace and hiding in the oak tree.

In the beginning, Grace is still in the ‘paparazzi’ mind-set but the things she finds out, the further she gets away from her life and with Alasdair’s calm and laid back reverse psychology, she starts to see the real beauty in life once more.

Alasdair was perfect (as we’ve all come to expect from Choc Lit!) in a wounded and rugged type of way. I would have trusted him 100% with my life! It is obvious that Hudson has used her background to create a character that reflects true life. He is very authentic :)

There were so many feel-good moments in the story but for me, my favourite has to be the wedding they attend. I loved these scenes! Weepy (in a good way!). It’s not all feel-good though … there’s conflict and anguish to keep you turning those pages.

I have no hesitation in recommending you add this debut to your reading list.

I would like to thank the publishers for providing an ecopy in exchange for an honest review.

Grace has recently lost her mother. She wants to return to her childhood home to live a secluded life in the countryside. She loves the home she grew up in and is especially attached to the beautiful wedding cake tree in the garden. Grace expects to inherit the cottage, but her mother has other plans. Even in death she tries to send Grace a message. Grace has to wait six months before the reading of the will. When she's finally ready to hear what it says there's another surprise waiting for her. She's supposed to go on a trip, a journey that takes her to the important places in her mother's life from before Grace was born.

Grace isn't supposed to travel alone. Alasdair is a dear friend of her mother and he's supposed to keep her company, to be her guide and to give Grace her mother's letters. Grace's mother has a lot of surprises for her daughter and Grace starts to wonder how well she really knew her mother. Fortunately Alasdair is handsome and they're getting along well, very well even. Will Grace embrace her mother's inheritance and what will her future look like now that she's learned more about the past?

The Wedding Cake Tree is a fantastic book about a great topic. Grace has to travel to the places that were important in her mother's past. The idea behind is to get to know her mother, but also to get to know herself. Alasdair is great company, but he's also troubled. He needs the trip and some time to relax as his job is really hard. Grace and Alasdair are good for each other and I hoped they would have a future together. Grace also needs to face some facts about her own life and her mother's crazy plan maybe isn't the best way to do it, but it's certainly effective. The crazy trip, the chemistry between Grace and Alasdair and plenty of unexpected twists and turns make this book a joy to read. I liked it a lot and highly recommend it.

The plot is original and pretty much flawless in execution with well drawn three dimensional characters. Grace’s mother has died, but she can’t get her hands on the will or inherit her childhood home until she goes on a pilgrimage to the settings of significant events in her mother’s life – a secret life before Grace was born – and at each location she gets to read a letter from her mother, telling her about the happenings in her life at this particular location. She’s joined on her sojourn by a British Marine Major, Alasdair Finn. Grace's mother had helped Alasdair and out of respect for her he agrees to be the escort, carrier of ashes (ashes are scattered at most locations) and to hand over each of her mother’s letters at the right time.

The relationship between Grace and Alasdair moves very gracefully at first to what you imagine is a happy ending. But there are dark influences at work on the handsome, brave, Alasdair.

Meanwhile Grace is learning about her mother and the life she led before Grace’s birth. Grace also gets a chance to evaluate her own life and goals with surprising results.

The book is part travelogue and draws a magnificent setting for the quiet development of the relationship between Alasdair and Grace and also for Grace to learn about her mother. Sprinkled throughout the novel are small instances of laugh-out-loud humour. They come unexpectedly and are an absolute delight. You sort of gasp in surprise and then laugh.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Grace’s life comes to a screeching halt with the death of her mother. A loving, free spirit of a woman, she gave Grace a wonderful childhood full of memories she will cherish forever. The absence of her father was filled with the many coming and goings of the people her mother housed at her Devon retreat. The retreat was a peaceful, beautiful spot visitors came to relax and finds themselves.

To Grace’s dismay her mother’s final wishes were not as simple as one might imagine. She was to go on a journey, with a Royal Marine Alasdair, a friend of her mother’s who was chosen to escort her. Her trip was planned exclusively, by her mum and Alasdair, to places her mother held dear in her heart. Upon reaching each destination Grace was instructed to read a letter her mother had written her and to spread her ashes about.

Alasdair, a well defined Royal Marine, had been befriended by Grace’s mother after spending time at her retreat after a difficult time in his life. Needing a break from the stress of his job and personal life, she reluctantly agreed to escort Grace along her journey. The last thing on his mind was to fall in love with her.

This was a lovely story of loss, life, adventure and discovery. The skinny dipping segment of Grace and Alasdair, jumping in the loch had me laughing out loud! Quite a ‘lost the plot’ moment! The author does a marvellous job of describing the scenery about the characters. Rather an amazing and inspiring story. Exceptionally well written.

The Amazon reviews of this lovely book from one of my favourite publishers, Choc Lit, say everything about it really. There were 205 of them when I looked today, and only 8 of them three stars or less. In terms of volume, that's really something - but no surprise at all, because this book was absolutely lovely, a joy to read from its opening pages to the last.

The whole premise for the book is excellent - a tour arranged by Grace's mother Rosamund before her death, guided by a series of letters which help her find out more about her mother's life, with a gorgeous but emotionally damaged Marine as her guide and companion.

I've seen the comparisons with PS I Love You - but it's so much better than that. The whole journey with Alasdair and Grace is wonderful - every setting vividly, accurately and enticingly described (I know the Yorkshire setting well - the others I'd now love to visit...), but at an emotional level too. I loved Rosamund's clear voice through the letters, the perfect mother/daughter relationship it portrayed. And yes, Alasdair is thoroughly lovely - he'd certainly found a place in my heart by the book's end. I just loved it, a really good old-fashioned but original romantic read - don't miss this one.

My thanks to netgalley and publishers Choc Lit for my reading copy - which was actually my second copy, as it was already on my kindle from the date it was first released!

The book starts with a mystery and Terry the magic tortoise, who could resist that?. It then goes on to be a fairy tale of self discovery in the most gorgeous locations. Scotland is described in breath taking details. I had to laugh at the Clootie dumpling- most people has no idea what to do with it either.
The progression of Alasdair and Grace's romance starts out as old fashioned and charming, but the heat definitely gets turned up. Trust me when I say it is all tasteful and you will want an Alasdair of your very own.
I think the book asks the question “How we do we know our parents?”. We think we know them but there are always hidden stories. Most incredible is that Grace gets to retrace her mother's past.

With every new letter from Grace's mother, Rosamund, more is revealed, and there are plenty of bomb shells too. As soon as you think the book is going in one direction- Boom!; You are off in another. This is definitely not a run of the mill story.
I sat on the edge of my seat for the last two chapters not wanting it to end, and the author keeps you in a delicious suspense right till the end.
I sighed, as I closed the book and was asked “Mummy, why are you crying?” and all I could answer was “Because it was such a beautiful ending.”
I highly recommend this stunning début and I can not wait to see what Melanie Hudson writes next.

I have had this book on my to-read list forever and it was brilliant! I found it was very slow in the beginning, but the slow pace of the book allowed the story to simmer and it was well worth the time it took to read.

What a rollercoaster of emotions I experienced reading this book. Grace's life was good for the most part, but between her mother, Rosamund's story, and Alasdair's life unfolding, how heartbreaking and inspiring are the sacrifices of the "special forces" of the ones who protect our lives and country, whatever choice of military services they choose to honor.

Set in England, Grace's mother leaves her a two week trip she must take before she can inherit her beloved cottage. She must travel with her mother's hand picked guide in the hopes they will fall in love. I love this type of story where parent and child are the main characters. You can see Grace growing and maturing during their travels and she learns not only about her mother's early life, she learns about herself. So well written, I'll be looking for more books by Melanie Hudson.

what a great idea for a book!

I have never heard of a dying Mom leaving letters to her child with instructions to travel to places from the Mom’s youth. It was a wonderful read and a really clever concept.

Not just a frothy romance this one, much deeper feelings involved. Kind of a happy/sad book, I found myself smiling through tears several times.
