American Demon Hunters: Battle Creek, Michigan is one novella in the American Demon Hunters' world. The set is comprised of one novel and four novellas - written so that they can be read in any order without the reader being confused or spoiling any of the other stories.
As a fan of Chad Lutzke's novel - Of Foster Homes and Flies - it goes without saying that I would read his novella in the series first. Well, that and I received and ARC in trade for an honest review.
I like Chad's ability to fully develop character in such a short amount of time. A story where you don't understand - or worse, don't care about - the characters makes for a tedious read. But Chad has the skills and ability to avoid that, giving you down to earth, relatable characters.
Without giving too much away (I hate reviews where you have to check the "spoilers" box), this is a story about a family of - what else - demon hunters. They make their way from town to town. Hunting demons that the son "detects".
This story takes place in, well, Battle Creek (hence the title). It not only includes the supernatural that is expected from the title, but it also includes things that we all deal with in our lives - love, loss, being the new guy/girl at school, and family.
J. Thorn also sent me an ARC of the novel. I will not only dive into that next, but will seek out the remaining novellas when the set is finally released. If you're tired of the zombie genre and are looking for something fresh, check this series out (I suggest starting with this one - only because Chad is also a friend of mine [not biased or anything - LOL]).
Another well written short about the three demon hunters. They encounter a demon who likes to wear the skin of his victim's. Gory and thought provoking, another fab read that will make you miss your stop because you are that engrossed.
Corey dreams of a demon putting on a human suit with a HS jersey and stepping out of a portal, like the ones they have seen before. Some googling of the patch gets them the place, Battle Creek.
Are we going to hop into the ‘Mystery Machine’ every time Corey has a dream? Is that really our lives now?” (p. 6).
Good question, Sonya. But regardless, they decide the best way is to enrol Corey at the high school. The school also takes Hank on as a math teacher. The local paper reports two dead bodies in two days but Corey is so overwhelmed by anxiety attending school that his ‘gift’ fails him; he can’t tell what’s a warning and what’s just nerves. *** Another episode (that’s how I like to think of them) in the demon hunter series. Hank has taken up smoking again. I guess it will only kill him slowly and other things will kill him faster. Corey, who has always been home schooled, makes a friend, Rachel. And Sonya tries to hold them all together and update the demon journals with new info. A short demon snack, if you will. 4 stars
A marvelous read about what I thought was just a haunted house in Battle Creek, Michigan --- ended up being a put you on the edge of your seat and not putting down until your finished reading book. A family of three have become Demon Hunters --- the son can feel Portals (opening to hell) and what comes out of them once they are opened, the father is the searcher and the mother has telepathic messages to help them both and as a family they live through horrors your mind can’t even comprehend! Apparently there is a series of these books, but this is the first I’ve read and you can enjoy them all by themselves! Having toured the Kellogg’s plant in Battle Creek, this one was special to me as I could smell the scent of cereal and see my cartoons as a kid! My version was a Kindle, couldn't find it on Amazon!
This fantastic novella, is part of a series of stories, following characters introduced in American Demon Hunters. Battle Creek, MI picks up with Hank, his son Corey, and Sonya as they continue to travel across the US, trying to locate and close the portals that release demons into the world. There's a mystery element to this story, mixed with the horror elements. There's also a nice building in the interactions and relationships between Hank, Corey, and Sonya. I also felt it did a nice job describing the type of life the characters are leading and the toll hunting demons takes on their day to day lives. If you enjoyed American Demon Hunters, you definitely want to check out Battle Creek, MI. It's also a great story if you like a horror/mystery/supernatural mix.
This felt like it was less about the demon hunting and more about getting through the changes. It was still interesting but a few details really rubbed me up the wrong way unfortunately. Hopefully this is the only one for me. A great series none the less.
