After reading Seer of Souls, I was interested in reading this prequel when it was released.
Whereas that book took place on a mortal plane, in a world where magic and sorcery exist but was used (refreshingly) sparingly, Soul Survivor dealt with a power struggle between sibling gods, a struggle whose ultimate outcome will shape the mortal world the Spirit Shield Saga takes place in.
I wasn't sure how it was all going to play out, but I will say this - Helga is one BAD lady. Like, hissably evil. Which is what you want in a villain. The story, told from alternating POVs as it went along, made it a little harder for me to keep track of the story than I would have liked, but overall, it was an entertaining, fast read.

While King Caerwyn has been worried about the Primordials outside his castle gates, it’s really his siblings he should have been keeping a close eye on.
Alfreda would do anything to support Caerwyn. And the people love their queen. Artio has chosen a human to share her immortal life with. The ritual will require they use the full power of the moon tonight. Helga has been making plans to send them all into eternity and have all the rewards for herself. She’s tired of always getting the dead people.
Hud is just the King’s body servant. His son, Mordecai, holds the Box of Balance. Can they carry out the King’s orders?

Technical Tidbits…
The cover is both eye-catching and relevant to the story. Yay!
The storyline is pretty simple for all the twisting of the characters.
The characters are all quite shallow, but we don’t need to get to know them for this plot. This would be a better play than a book.
The pace was choppy.
The tension was pretty good. You just kept yourself braced for whatever these nasty little godlings might come up with next.

The good, the bad, and the ugly…and how much it lit up my life… ✰✰✰✰
Initially, the King seems like a pretty grand personage, but then his sister Alfreda shows up and is so small, graceful, and glamorous that Caerwyn looks like a clod beside her. He feels like one, too. Then he takes off to deal with the little godling siblings and you’re supposed to think of him as a great warrior again? No. That whole business with comparing the two older siblings sort of wore the shine off Caerwyn and I didn’t have the same sort of confidence in him as I did in the beginning. I think that was a mistake. The comparison should have been to make him seem bigger and stronger rather than a clod. In spite of that comparison, I did like the relationship between the two. I would have liked to see more of their interactions, but the characters were so shallow that there wasn’t much of that sort of thing.
There wasn’t much interplay between Caerwyn and Hud, either. And Hud is the one he hands it all to later on. You’d think that their relationship would have been shown to be a bit warmer or closer. Were we supposed to assume a closer relationship because the King knew about his son? All of a sudden, the silent servant is full of gab and sharing his life story with the King? I felt their relationship really needed more support for what happens later. Not any long conversation, but sort of a few words here and there tossed between them like an ongoing communication between two people on the same wavelength. Then what happened later would have made more sense. Some indication that they were close in some way other than Hud gets Caerwyn into his clothes and armor each day and takes him out of them each night. A distant servant relationship.
I still can’t figure out what Calleigh, Genii’s mother was up to. First, she’s helping Artio and Genii to cast the spells and such for their ritual to bind his soul to Artio’s and make him as close to an Immortal as possible. Second, she’s helping Helga do her nasty stuff. Whose side is Calleigh on? Then she tells Caerwyn what’s happening, basically. They all rush nicely into Helga’s traps. And they all have to stand there and listen while Helga cackles about how smart and superior she was than they were. How now she’s going to have her piece of the world.
I would have loved to have seen the scene on a movie screen of Caerwyn bestowing his powers on Hud and then the responsibility on Mordecai. Then their leave-taking. I think that is well-done. All the way to the end. The ending is what hooks you into wanting to read the series. Mordecai is such an enchanting little character that he draws you in and it’s almost as if he’s motioning you to follow him for the next adventure.
I don’t like short books. I don’t like prequels. This is only 102 pages. But I recommend it and suggest you try the next book based on what I read here. I will probably read the next one, too. Mordecai thinks I should.

A book about rivalry between siblings but these are not ordinary siblings, they are godlings and this book put me in mind of other godling books by Rick O'Riordan and the Percy Jackson series! I must admit that i expected much more strength from the twins Alfreda and Caerwyn seeing as how they were godlings and in charge of the safety of the mortal world but instead its a wizard child, Mordecai who is master of the magical balance box who is entrusted to watch over the souls of the king and queen and the mortals for all eternity!! The fight between good and evil seems to be eternal too but who will survive and who is behind all the treachery? Would love to see a bit more magic and strength in the following books. I loved the cats and the pegasus and i have a feeling that Mordecai will grow in strength as a wizard as he matures, maybe becoming as strong as Merlin!!

The author is new to me and I came upon a couple of her paperbacks on sale at Amazon and I gave them a try. As this is a prequel, and I have not read any of the other books in the series, I was amazed that I was able to jump right in and follow the story.
The characters were memorable, love the young sorcerer and his balance box, and the story revolved around siblings and their struggle for dominance and survival. A bit confusing at times with so much going on in the story, but I did not want to put the book down.
"As it wove the spirit of the gods into a thread of healing, a godling could then take that thread and make a blanket of healing for all those within the circle."
"Most wizards and witches did not survive a journey past the edge of the swamp, falling prey to the swamp's hold on their magic."
"...to bind their souls to each other for all eternity."

Four siblings, godlings - this idea rock!
The way we follow the story sometimes is a little to shattered, so it needs a little concentration to follow everything in good place.
Characters are good written, we get to know them mostly by their deeds or what they say.
The general situation is really interesting, as we find here people whoall kind of emotions, and we get them in best proportions!
Magic here is a luxury that have to be well used by people who have that power!
I really enjoyed prequel to Spirit Shiels Saga, and for sure i will read next books!
Not to make a big spoiler I love descendants :)

I thought this book was a decent fantasy series intro, and found it to be entertaining, but some of the descriptions were a bit vague and confusing, and sadly, most of the confusing bits had to do with the magic the story revolves around. This was a fairly quick read, but I'm not sure I'm sold on buying the other books in the series to see what happens next. I just wasn't sucked into the story enough to become invested in the characters. They didn't really seem to be as fleshed out as they could have been. A lot of the fantastic things in the story seemed a bit cliche and unoriginal.

Four Godlings, the result of the union of a God and a human female: two sets of twins.
Each has their own domain to administer.
However, as in most cases, there is one dissatisfied with what they have been given.
So, setting forth to correct what is believed a wrong against her, Helga carries out her own 'experiment' to correct her perceived injustice.
It took a little to get into the idea behind this story, but now I am looking forward to the next episodes.

A story that truly brings to light how sibling rivalry can consume a person. Gods are immortal and can't die but when you being innocents they may just become mortal. Helga takes being a bitch to a whole new level. I would not want to meet her!

People just don't get along including sisters and brothers that are Gods. What is right and wrong. To be a mortal or an immortal. To give a child a box that helps right the wrongs of the world maybe, it is unknown what will happen when the box is opened.Good writing, good book.

A delicate balance is necessary for life of wide range of beings to be maintained. Caerwyn, Alfreda, Artio and Helga are the godlings that protect life and manage responsibility of the various systems involved. Kings and Queens of their respective realms they each must work diligently and constantly to maintain the balances necessary. But when a large increase in souls arising from the deaths of their respective vessels starts to indicate the systems are failing, it is up to Caerwyn and Alfreda to find the cause. Something is changing and unless the reason is found and the answer solved the increases in souls without vessels will continue to grow.
Artio is the controller of all things celestial and if the stars, moon and planets are not managed then life through the environment begins to change. Alfreda is responsible for all the animals and beings of the primordial plane. Caerwyn manages the lives of good souls and sees them into bodies, while Helga manages the punishment of those that have gone wrong. Sibling rivalry has always been there, the son and daughters of the Gods of creation, who laid with mortal women to get the children granted dominion over the various aspects of creation.
Helga at once hates, and shames of, the hypocrisy of the gods. Having begotten children on mortals they remain secluded in their celestial realm sitting over creation whilst they bath in the prayers of mortals. High and mighty in their prevention of any mortal taint on their realm; and yet they'd lain with the ones they despise. Jealous of her sibling Artio who has found companionship and happiness in the wizard Genii. Hateful of the 'golden children' as she sees Caerwyn and Alfreda because of their dominion over life. Helga covets what her siblings have.
Amongst the many different lives of the various beings of the earth there is a great unrest brewing. Just as to the cause it is unknown, although the presumptions are many. To the primordial it is the many humanities that the blame leads. To the humanities it is the archaic ways, traditions and rituals of the primordial that the blame leads. To Caerwyn and Alfreda it is the unknown machinations of Helga where suspicions lie. Artio has no real stake in the interests of beings but is instead enthralled in the workings of her medicine wheel and the ritual necessary to make her wizard partner Genii's human life as close to immortal as can be achieved, so as to ensure their bond for eternity, where her interests lie. Helga is undoubtedly brewing something in reparation for her perceived slight at the hands of the gods and at all things living, from whence she has been removed.
All parties have sought knowledge and advice from a great seer of the swamp people, in the hope that their interests will prevail. She confirms the changes coming, in no more than three generations time if the balance is not righted. The first road leads to a great war and the death of all mortal life. The second leads to the death of magic and all things relating to the gods, including the godling brother and sisters and therefore the pathways to reincarnation. And the third leads to the death of everything, including the land's ability to sustain possible future life. She remains neutral, imparting the knowledge and items all four godlings have sought and therefore has not acted to stop which will come. Life on earth is at a crossroads and whomever are successful will determine what path is walked. Either way immortal and mortal life regardless of any outcome will change.
Sometimes the best choice is only ever the better of poor choices. Only in segregation can the evils of one party go unchecked. The proverbial 'keep friends close, but enemies closer' is often only fully realised in hindsight, when it is too late to see how truly apt it is. As things pass from the world they take with them the things reliant upon them. Even the smallest most insignificant knat can be a life changer if enough things rely upon it. The prequel herein shows many themes, including the aforementioned and how the greatest harm can come from the greatest of intentions. Soul Survivor sets the context of the world to come in stunning manner. The pace is fast and the reach of the story is grand. The writing technique is clear and easy to understand. Detail is vivid and the story both finishes and opens the door to the future. A changing way of life is heralded from the best of poor choices; but perhaps all is not lost. The level headed thinking shown in the closing moments paves the way for a future to maybe return what is no longer possible. As long as the wheel of life continues who knows what it may bring through its endless rotations.

This is the story battle and the feud between four Godling siblings. And how the kingship came to pass from Caerwyn, son of Morpheus to huma, Hud and his descendants. Also, of Mordecia a human wizard who was chosen to guard the precious souls of the godlings who perished.
Seven year old Mordecia is both full of a child's wonder of the world he lives in and wisdom of the ages that seems to pour from him. I look forward to seeing how he grows up and handles the mantle that has been thrust upon him.

The one was a little of a slow burn where I found it hard to really get into the story at the beginning. That said, I liked how all the storylines came together at the end and it was well-written. Given that it's a prequel to the actual series, I'm not too worried about the slow-ish pace during the first two-thirds of the book. I will definitely be reading Book 1 in the near future.

She will sacrifice her brother Caerwyn, her sister Alfreda and her other sister Artio. Does her plan work? Did Caerwyn name a successor? Is Mordecai ready for the magic that hums in his veins?

Final Thoughts:
Soul Survivor is a great prequel to Spirit Shield Saga. I am really excited to see what becomes of Mordecai now he is the Royal Spirit Shield.

Final Thoughts:
Soul Survivor is a great prequel to Spirit Shield Saga. I am really excited to see what becomes of Mordecai now he is the Royal Spirit Shield.
I hope Helga does not get away with everything she has done.

Seer of Souls
This prequel certainly makes me want to read the series. Although it centers around beings with god-like qualities, anyone can relate to the main characters. Steeped in mythology, Faw's history of the Spirit Shields is an easy to read and enjoyable fantasy story!

Talk about a surprise! This is a new author for me and I got this book as a freebie. It started out a bit slow, I think mostly because so many of the characters and back story had to be introduced for the series. I am so glad I stuck with it! By the time I was two-thirds of the way in, I was hooked! Little Mordecai was definitely my favorite character. He's just so open-hearted and he truly loved Caerwyn and Alfreda. I just can't wait to read more of this series!

A cracking fantasy tale and perfect for reading.
Once you got your head round all the characters you really got into the story. It certainly wetted the appetite for more of the same..
Already started on Sear of Souls. Glad I have found another cracking new author worthy of our support.

An unusual and enticing beginning to what promises to be an amazing fantasy adventure. I enjoyed reading from the viewpoint of a god. The characters are well developed and likable...except for Helga. Evil wench. I am looking forward to reading more from Susan Faw! I highly recommend this book.

When there is rivalry between siblings it spills over into the mortal world and causes grief. What will happen. Plenty of magic and great reading to the end

Sabretooth cats, Pegasus, Godlings, Witches, and Wizards. Oh My! The battle of Godlings. The story has a fast pace to it. To much bouncing from character to character was like a whirlwind out of control on not knowing who you would peek on next. Just to keep up with what each character was doing. Jealously of one destroys her twins and harms others. The little boy with the box, makes me wonder if his stronger than Merlin, even if he isn't in the story. Always loved reading about Godlings and their kingdoms. Magic mixed in makes for a interesting story.
