This is a compelling book that my son loved and I had to read for myself- all in one day as it turned out. It is a great mixture of powerful descriptions of an ethereal spirit creature and a more down to earth narrative of a family camping in the wilds of Scotland, and then the two worlds start to collide. The two children, Grant and Amanda, are well-described and, though different from each other, have a warm relationship. Read it to find out if they can enjoy the holiday they have looked forward to for so long, what the mysterious beast wants and to learn about the mysterious Scottish stranger who claims he lives in the forest. This book has mystery, adventure, family relationships and great Scottish scenery- mountains, a loch, a forest and an ancient cave....

Here is a review written by my 10 year old son who thoroughly enjoyed reading this book in one day! :

The Beast by Ann Evans

This is one of the greatest books I have read so far! The language really builds up the atmosphere and gets you in the mood! Once you start reading this book you can not put it down! A great book! :)

My favourite characters:
I have three favourite characters in this book- Grant, Amanda and Karbel. Amanda is the first to notice the beast, Grant is the brave brother of Amanda and the same person who helps Amanda and Mr Stewart fight the beast. Finally Karbel is the vicious saber-tooth tiger that has a desire to hunt and kill Amanda and Grant, especially Grant.

My favourite and least favourite part of the book:
My favourite part of the book is when Grant fights the beast Karbel. This is because Karbel did not expect Grant to stand up to this overpowered manifestation. Not only because of that, it is because he is using a knife - exactly how Karbel was killed in one of Grant and Karbel's previous lives when they were living in the same era. My least favourite part of the book is when Mr Stuart was viciously injured by Karbel.

Rating and recommendation:
My rating for this book would be 5 out of 5 stars as it is a very compelling book as quoted on the front cover by The Guardian. My recommendation would be to teenagers or young adults as although it is meant for children, it has language that describes the beast in a terrifying way and has a high chance of giving small children nightmares.

In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope other people will start reading this book after reading this review. :)
