**********Contains Spoilers**********

As is evident by the abundant 5 star ratings, this book has certainly touched the senses of the ones that have preceded me and to a certain extent it does shine albeit a bit dimly as stars tend to do in a really cloudy sky.Even a million stars.

I could not understand the angst & longing that lasted eight years and the almost instantaneous surrender by the heroine. The hero Derrick was not a very nice man.To plainly say it he was a horrible human being and his terrible behavior being explained as manipulation by the heroine's father was a bit disingenuous and to partially blame the heroine for his cowardly absence 8 years down the line is eye rolling.

Year 1.Nothing
Year 2.Nothing
Year 3.Nothing
Year 4.Nothing
Year 5.Nothing
Year 6.Nothing
Year 7.Nothing
Year 8.A sudden resolution from enemies to soul mates because the 'hero' Derrick
has had enough of the cold shoulder from Zoey the heroine.

Year 2 has about the only insight into the hero's mind via a memory of the heroine otherwise he is a silent participant the entire book.I'm thinking that was a wise choice to make as having to witness this manwhore's actions from his POV would have been too much to swallow even for the truly diehard romantics.

THE DRIVER PULLS up to Claire’s house, and as I wait on her and my niece to come out, I lose myself once more in my memories.
It was a beautiful ceremony. Suzie got it all, and I couldn’t be happier for her. Although, every time my eyes wander to Derrick, my heart breaks. We were supposed to be married two years ago. Jackass!

As it is, I’m standing at the bar, drinking my happiness/heartache away. I’m about to ask for another chardonnay when I hear him. His voice both soothes and breaks my heart in turn.
“Well darlin’, I’d say yes to that fuck, but it is my best friend’s wedding. Someone might miss me if I’m gone too long. And to do you properly, I’d have to be gone awhile,” he says.
The train wreck he is with giggles. He hated girls that giggled. What has happened to him?
“We could just go into a back room and I could suck you off. I’m dying to get my mouth on you, Derrick,” the train wreck says. What the fuck? Who does that?
He chuckles, and the sound gives me goose bumps. Fucking goose bumps! As much as I don’t want to hear what Derrick says next, I can’t stop listening. It’s like watching a car accident. You know you should look away, but you can’t. So when he says, “I think the bridal suite is empty,” my heart shatters all over again.

Year 8

Laughing, he starts to pace again. “I never stopped loving you.” He says quickly. “I have loved you for the past eleven years and it pisses me off to no end that you tried to kill yourself. A world without your smile is not a world I want to be in.”
“Well get over it! I never asked you to love me.”

I would have liked more insight into Derrick's thoughts and not just him mouthing them to placate his 'soulmate'.His almost sudden turnabout and random sudden pursuit of the heroine was a bit jarring when the reader experiences none of his angst of separation personally which were opposed to many of his actions perpetrated by him throughout the 8 years apart. And because of this I had no sympathy for his character as I witnessed him having no adverse suffering from his time apart from the heroine other than his pretty words.

There is zero cheating mentioned and no sexual scenes with o/w.The present timeline is safe.

She tried to kill herself when he sent a tape with him having sex with another woman. She suffered for a long time with depression and still over excised (with hints at bulimia, that were never resolved....like taking him back was going to cure it)
But she kept thinking about how "hot" he was even though he'd decimated her!
I was completely confused and it took away from her genuine depression over him leaving her.
The writing was great and the idea a truly great idea but it was too rushed to be believable.

When we first meet Zoey and Derrick, they are head over heels in love with each other; futures are planned with nothing in their way. Until Derrick goes pro and Zoey is shattered into a million pieces. We are told of Zoey’s attempted suicide and her strong, sassy, independent nature. Battle after battle Zoey has fought back and become such a strong character, almost too much at times. As time goes on, Derrick reveals a crushing secret about their relationship causing Zoey to spiral backwards, into the dark consuming hole of depression. Leaving her to battle it alone this time is unacceptable to Derrick, he pulls through and becomes a man worthy of her love and affection, demanding she pulls through.

The characters in Second Half are very complex characters. The main focus on Zoey and Derrick is always kept in the forefront; secondary characters are very well developed and play a large part in the novel. I could describe the characters as a loud, loving family formed through trials and tribulations. The plot was very fasted paced; and focused on some very difficult topics to talk about. There were times where I thought the feelings might have been a little impulsive, almost too easy to forgive or to let it slide. Overall, I did enjoy Second half, the characters were likable, somewhat relatable, my interest was held throughout the novel and I’m curious as to how the follow up novel plays out.

There are not enough words to describe just how badly i want to throat punch the H and the h's dad. The H's apology was pathetic if you can even call it that, seriously he needed to break her heart because she was to postive, to supportive and loved him to much...but apparently she was the most selfish person ever.. talk about a contradiction.

P.S. Derrick I'm here to tell you that your the selfish POS, not Zoey

Second Half is the first book in the Coach’s Trilogy Series by Monica DeSimone. It is a really well written, emotional and captivating contemporary/second chance at love romance.
Zoey McEvoy and Derrick Henderickson were only teenagers when they fell in love. But they fell hard. They had mapped out their future together, so certain that they would always be together. But that was no to be. Dreams were destroyed. Plans that would now never happen. Her heart was shattered and life seemed bleak as depression set in. One decision had such devastating and long term effects.
Zoey McEvoy has worked incredibly hard to become strong and independent woman. But she paid a hefty price along the way. She spent quite a lot of time quite uncertain, broken and incredible unhappy. Her depression was so severe that suicidal thoughts entered her mind. But she finally managed to navigate her way through the darkness that seemed to be blanketing her life. Zoey has vowed to never let anyone have such a powerful hold over her heart, ever again.
Zoey has invested a lot of time and energy into setting up Coach’s Shadow, a foundation that she began in memory of her much loved father Coach Robert ‘Mac’ McEvoy, who died not so long ago. The first of what she hopes will become an annual fundraiser, Coach’s Shadow Ball, is fast approaching and all the planning and preparations have her on edge. When her keynote speaker pull out at the last minute, he organises a surprise replacement.
Derrick is NFL’s sexy bad boy and star player. Eight years ago he chose his career over his heart. Leaving Zoey’s heart broken and life in ruins. But he’s back and is determined to win Zoey over, capture her heart and repair their tattered relationship. He soon realises that it’s not going to be an easy task. She has an immense anger and a deep loathing that is directed at him. He had no idea how badly broken he had left her all those years ago and when he finds out he knows it’s going to take an enormous effort on his part to earn her trust again, before he has any chance at all of winning her heart. Somehow he has to prove that he had never stopped loving her. But Zoey has a lot of baggage that he left her with and issues that won’t just ‘go away’. Can Zoey find it in her heart to forgive Derrick and give him a second chance at rekindling their love?
I really recommend this story, it is well worth your time (and money) to read this fantastic story. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you won’t regret getting this book. The author has put a lot of heart and soul into this story and her characters are divine.
I will definitely be reading all of Ms. DeSimone’s work from now on!

Thank you Ms. DeSimone!

Second Half is Book One of the Coach’s Shadow Trilogy. It tells the story of Zoey McEvoy and Derrick Hendrickson. Eight years ago Derrick left Zoe broken after leaving her to pursue his NFL career. Now Derrick is back and determined to claim Zoe as his. Will he succeed? Can Zoe allow him to be in her world again after what he did to her? After what she did to herself?
Zoey McEvoy is the younger daughter of the late and well respected NFL coach, Mac. Zoey idolised her father following him around the football ground gaining the name of Coach’s Shadow. Since Mac’s death Zoey and her older sister, Claire, have set up the Coach’s Shadow Foundation in memory of him. Opening night is taking its mental toll on Zoey who is still healing after Derrick walked out of her life leaving her broken and spiralling into depression. It has taken eight years for her to rebuild herself into the strong independent woman she is although she continually has to fight to prevent herself falling back into the black hole of depression. Zoey, despite what Derrick did to her, has never been able to not love him so when she hears Derrick’s voice and realises he has come in place of another NFL star to help her front the night she is afraid and stunned. Will she be able to cope with seeing Derrick? Can she survive without spiralling back into the darkness?
Derrick Hendrickson always called Zoey ‘Duchess’. He promised Zoey his love for forever and they planned a future together. When he left to go on tour with the NFL he was still promising her his unending love. He never called: he never answered her calls: he did however send her a video of himself with another girl. Now he is back hoping for a second chance to claim his ‘Duchess’ back and prove to Zoey that he never stopped loving her. What he doesn’t know is that everyone is hiding a secret for Zoey, something she doesn’t ever want him to know.
As Zoey uncovers the true facts behind Derrick walking out of her life, it threatens to turn her very life upside down and she has new demons to battle to prevent herself falling back into the depression that claimed her before.
Monica DeSimone writes from the heart in this fast paced story so that Zoey’s battle with depression (told in flashbacks) is told sympathetically, realistically and honestly. Even to the point that someone managing bouts of depression will consistently have to fight against it as it is something that can come back at any time and for any number of reasons.
Zoey and Derrick’s story is not a sad story, it is a story of people thinking they know what’s best for others and manipulating people, situations and events for their own benefit. It also shows how important it is for someone who is battling depression for them to have a strong ‘family and friends network’ around them. It is also a story of hope.
All the characters are multi-dimensional and very believable. You may not like Derrick at first but hang in there, there is more to him than you think.
The only thing that spoilt the story for me was the very graphic sex scene towards the end. I do think that authors can show deep, real, passionate love between two people without going into graphic detail. The one thing that stood out in this though was that Zoey who was still fragile was being ‘manipulated’ into doing something she’d never done before and whilst she enjoyed it in the end I felt it was a little too soon in their ‘new – second chance’ relationship for this.
I would definitely recommend Monica DeSimone as an author and look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy.

Second Half written by Monica DeSimone
5+++++ stars

I knew from the first paragraph I was not going to be disappointed. This book grabbed me and didn't let go even after I turned the last page. I'm so thankful I have book two of the series Encroachment ready to go right after I share this great read with you. I am completely in love with this authors writing. Monica tugs at your heart, will have you laughing, crying, wanting to hang out with these characters because you get to know them so well they feel like friends...more like family you choose. There is a serious issue discussed in this book that is written from all angles and done with sensitivity yet head on.

Zoey aka Duchess aka the Coach’s Shadow has loved Derrick she she was a sophomore in high school. He is perfectly sculpted, demanding, funny, and generous, and she can’t get enough of him.
Derrick is the beginning and the end for her. He’s promised to marry her since sophomore year, and she believed him. Derrick was headed into the NFL draft and that had her freaking out. Zoey likes control and this is something she has no control over.

Zoey has been through a lot of heartbreak and hasn't handled it in a healthy way. She is clawing her way back and putting her focus into the foundation she started to honor her father. She wants his legacy to live on yet she had no idea it would bring back the man that destroyed her eight years ago.

“Strange how things can change over time but not really truly change.”

Derrick isn't just coming back for the foundation he is coming back for the woman he never stopped loving. She has no idea that he has been missing her, checking up on her and wanting her back in his life and how hard it has been to stay away. He was trying to give them both the chance to go after what was important to both of them not realizing how much he destroyed her. He's determined to bring back the girl he's always loved. He can't stand to see the darkness in her. He wants her healthy again fighting for what she loves.

“I can feel the panic attack start. He doesn’t know. I know for a fact that Derrick doesn’t know what happened to me all those years ago. Everyone promised me they wouldn’t tell him. Knowing this, I try to gather as much composure as I can...he broke me in every way humanly possible... and despite what anyone thinks, demolish me is exactly what he did.”

Now that Derrick is back will Zoey go back to her old ways and hide herself from those that love her? Will she be strong enough to face Derrick and the feelings she still has? Will Derrick get Zoey to understand why he destroyed their future? Will she ever forgive him? Can she trust the man that once was her her oxygen but extinguished her breathe and left her in a downward spiral she barely escaped?

Second Half by Monica DeSimone a sublime five-star read. This is the first book in the Coach’s shadow trilogy, and also the first book by this author I have read, I can’t wait for the second book in the series. It was a great start to the series, it deals with darkness and light in a compassionate and caring manner, we watch the characters grow and become the great people they deserve to be.
Zoey Elizabeth McEvoy is a strong, sassy, independent woman that has vowed to never allow anyone to determine her emotional well-being again, once was enough. Zoey wasn’t always this strong, sassy and independent, she has spent the last eight years struggling with depression and the after effects of a suicide attempt, after the last time she allowed someone that power. After she recently lost her beloved farther Coach Robert ‘Mac’ McEvoy and founded Coach’s shadow Foundation to honour her farther. Finally getting herself straight even though the night of the first annual Coach’s shadow ball, is pushing all her buttons and she is scaring the ball room staff in every way, that is until her Besties husband Bennie pulls out of being Keynote speaker and arranges a surprise to replace himself with, the surprise being his Bestie Derrick who also happens to be the reason behind Zoey’s depression.
Derrick Mathew Hendrickson chose his career over his ‘Duchess’ Zoey eight years ago, he left her heart broken and generally broken but he didn’t realise just how broken until he has returned to capture her heart. Derrick is hoping that Bestie Suzie and sister Claire will help him prove to Zoey that his love for her has never left and show her why he made that decision all those years ago. It doesn’t hurt that he has also gotten hotter over the years.
This story was so great, it just goes to show that sometimes the second half of the story can grow and develop into a better story than the first half.

I seriously can't understand the mental state of the authors who write a lowest of the low scum-sludge Heroes whose whole personality revolves around how many women they've fvcked and the fetish of them to make the guy somehow desirable to the heroine character who not only finds this monumental sludge eater "hot" but also finds him as the cure for all their mental illnesses.

HOW COULD YOU LET SOMEONE INTO YOUR LIFE AGAIN WHO LITERALLY CAUSED YOU TO TRY AND COMMIT SUICIDE?! Seriously, I understand the concept of forgiveness and letting go, but that's the catch...TO LET GO, NOT LET THEM COME BACK...okay so he decided to clear things up AFTER 8 FVCKING YEARS, dont know what kind of shithole he was in those years that he couldn't even gather the guts to clear up his mess personally inbetween, but the sludgeeater has the audacity to barge back into the girl's life whom he cowardly hurt with backhanded means and took a cheater's way out, but I degress...
So he comes back to explain and make amends ..okay hear him out... get your closure.. that's "healthy" as some therapy-addict shall call it..and forgive if you want to keep yourself at peace...BUT THAT'S IT. That's where you stop and walk away. Sometimes it's okay to not be the "bigger one" and let them get back into your life...sometimes it's okay to keep toxic people away and ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY WERE THE REASON YOU ALMOST DIED.

You don't get any"second chances" here. There's no second chance for someone who consciously made decisions that affected you negatively. THERE'S NOT.

And authors need to STOP writing and selling such crap in the name of angst and romance. What kind of life you have to live to call this a romance or love story? This can only be seen as the literary equivalent of masochist porn.

Second Half (Coach’s Shadow Trilogy Book 2) by Monica DeSimone contemporary romance. It is the second change love story between Derrick Henderickson and Zoey McEvoy.
Zoey grew up under her father’s shadow, Coach McEvoy. She knows everything about football and was even in love with one of her father’s protégés, Derrick. They have been together since they were teens and they had made plans for their future together, but that all that changed once Derrick was drafted to the NFL. No return calls or texts, but a horrible video sent Zoey’s world into a downward spiral and nearly takes her life.
Fast forward eight years, Derrick is back in town and wants to make his way back into Zoey’s life. Zoey is forced to reveal to Derrick everything she went through since the day he left to the NFL. Is Derrick ready to learn the pain and anguish that he caused Zoey when he left to the NFL training camp? He regrets leaving her behind and not being there for her, but he is ready to get her back if it takes a lifetime. Will Zoey be able to gain his trust again and fall back into the arms of her one and only true love?
This is the first book I read by Monica DeSimone. She subtly touches on the subject of suicide and how Zoey attempted it. The story gave me a roller coaster of emotions: sadness, anxiety, love. I look forward to reading the second book in the trilogy. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys football and second chance romances.

Second Half (Coach's Shadow Trilogy Book 1) by Monica DeSimone is the first book in the Coach's Shadow Trilogy. The book focuses on the main character Zoey and her battle to be strong and heal from her past. I did identify with her battle with depression and how she wanted to never go back thee again. Throughout the story she grows and develops as a character and you do get pulled along with her in her journey to heal and grow. Enter Derrick now I really didn't like him (ay first) and frankly wanted to slap him repeatedly. However I did grow to like Derrick as the story developed and I did start to cheer for him in his battle to get Zoey back. I did enjoy the story and characterisation. The sensitive issues in the story are dealt with in a very respectful manner. I will be reading the rest of the books in this series because I have to know what happens!

Zoey finally has rebuilt herself after being broken by her ex, the ex that chose his career over her and broke up with her in the worst way possible.
Zoey swears that after finally healing herself no one will get close to her heart again, then Derrick shows up, letting her know nothing has changed and he has to explain what happened.
Derrick didn’t realise how bad things got for Zoey, no one told him and he knows that he will do anything to make things right with Zoey and he has to let her know why everything happened. First he knows he has to get her to trust him again after what he did.
Zoey knows that Derrick seems sincere in everything he’s said and she can’t believe that others knew, but now she has to decide can she forgive him and have the future she always wanted or does she cling to the past.

Zoey McEvoy was left shattered eight years ago, when the love of her life, chose his career over his heart. But Zoey wasn’t just hurt she was completely broken.
But slowly over the past eight years she has fought to try and put herself back together piece by piece to ensure she doesn’t slip back into the darkness that overwhelmed her. Now she has rebuilt herself to become a strong independent woman that she is today, and continue to live her life normally again. That is until the bad boy of the NFL returns, and Derrick Hendrickson returns even more determined than before to prove his back to reclaim her heart.
But can Zoey survive if he just walked away again? Would she have enough fight in her, not to return to the darkness?

With so much on the line does Derrick stand a chance of winning the second half?

Second half is Book 1 in the Coach’s Shadow Trilogy, and my first introduction to author Monica DeSimone, and I cannot wait to see if Book 2 of this series is as incredible as book 1.

I think certain books, really move people all in different ways. I have read many second chance romance books like this before, but nothing compares to this book. I have been incredibly moved by this book, there was just something that really hit a nerve while reading this book, and sitting here now writing this review I’m sure to have a book hangover from this one!

This book captures you from the first page and boy oh boy, is that first page hot! What a way to start a book! I sat a read this book not wanting to put it down afraid of something I may miss. The emotions and feelings that are brought through the pages and words of this book is what I think make this book amazing! I have smiled, I laughed, I have been frustrated and mad but most of all I have had tears streaming down my face due to the flashback and memories that this incredible author gives us! The sexy scenes have been hot and passionate and just show how connected these two really are.

This is truly and epic second chance romance that has us feeling the pain, sorrow, heartbreak, anger, unconditionally love that these two characters feel. Although this book felt real as though I was there when things were happening, the flashbacks and memories scenes that Zoey were just so raw and heart-breaking, I couldn’t help but feel as though they were happening to me. This author’s writing really entrances you enough to actually believe you are living this out yourself, which I why I think this book hit me harder than I expected!

With all that being said, all of these emotions however strong and heart- breaking they are is what makes this storyline what it is, and also how the characters are. From the moment, you read this book you are drawn to the connection between Zoey & Derrick, nothing can tear them apart, everything seems to be so perfect for them that no one saw the heartache that was coming for any of the characters.
When truths have been said for the reasons why things happened 8 years ago, it makes me wonder why it took these characters so long to reconnect. But when these two characters get together, they are passionate and undeniably still in love with each other.

Along with our two main characters there are many secondary characters that stand out in this book and make you wonder what their story is, whether that’s Suzie’s story or even Zoey’s sister Claire, each of these have a story to tell, so I just hope we get to read them!

There was just one thing that I wish this book had, and this is just personal preference, is that I wish this was written in dual POV’S on numerous occasions through this book I really wanted to know what Derrick was thinking and feeling and what was really going through his head when him and Zoey were having “the chat”. Monica gave us great descriptions so I could mentally visualise what Derrick was feeling but I also really wanted to know it from his POV.

When we first read about Zoey, she confident, in love and strong. But through the duration of this book we see various different sides to Zoey, especially the side after the breakup with Derrick that left her completely and utterly broken, to the point where she believed she was beyond repair. But we get to see how resilient and strong she is. She fights back to get herself back together, to make sure she doesn’t allow the darkness inside again, and with that she becomes a stronger person. She does have moments of self-doubt and even trust issues but all is expected after everything she goes through. I loved seeing the change in her. How she allowed Derrick to break down the walls again and allow herself to love him again even though she never stopped.

Derrick is another strong, successful male who will do nothing but protect those that he loves. But carrying the secret of the reason why he left eight years ago really has him rethinking his whole plan. But unbeknown to him, the love of his life is back home suffering horribly and he knows nothing about it. You can tell from the moment he steps back into Zoey’s life he is going to be there forever. He is fully aware of the awful choices he made, but for them eight years he always knew he would go back to his home, his home with Zoey but he wasn’t aware of how broken she had become. He fights for nothing but to protect her, love her unconditionally and show her he can be trusted again.

I’m so glad that these two characters get a HEA, and hopefully their story continues a little bit in book 2. But this book has truly blown me away, and I’m sad that it’s over. But I will eagerly await Book 2 Encroachment.

Held me captive from page 1

This is my first time reading Monica DeSimone and I absolutely loved it. The storyline was riveting. The heartache and betrayals of the past had me wondering how this could possibly have an HEA but it transformed from an ugly, tragic past into a beautiful love story which held me captive from page 1!

Second Half by Monica DeSimone is a second chance romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Holly Holt.

This is the first book of Monica’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I cannot wait to dive into the second book Encroachment to get Claire and Jackson’s Story.

Holly did an amazing job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of your projects in the future.

This is the first book I have read from this author and now she has a new fan. This book is the first in the Coach’s Shadow Trilogy. This is my favorite type of romance second chances. This story had me at the very first page. I love my second chance romance and this book is one of my favorites. This story is so addicting it only took me a day and half to finish this amazing book.

Zoey McEvoy had a very hard childhood. She had a very famous father that everyone loved and knew. She had her heart broken by her first true love: Derrick. She is now a very smart and also independent woman. She now takes her father’s foundation very seriously. This is now her main reason to get up in the morning. She puts together her first annual ball and her friend can't make it. When she finds out her replacement she freaks out. The replacement is the man that broke her heart all those years ago. She knows that her heart cannot take another heartbreak from him so she tries to stay away from him. It would destroy her. She quickly finds out that Derrick’s new game play is getting her back at any cost but is her heart ready? Zoey and Derrick start to build a very close friendship and secrets come out that could make or break them for good. Will Zoey ever be able to trust Derrick with her heart again or will she find it broken again?

Derrick has known Zoey since they were just teenagers. He knew that she was very special. When he gets an offer of a lifetime he takes it leaving Zoey in shambles. Now eight years has past and he now regrets ever letting her go. He is now back in his hometown and his new game plan is getting Zoey back for good. He now knows that she is the best thing that has ever happened to him. He gets Zoey and his friends on board to help get her back. He knows that he is going to have to prove to her that she is the only one for him. He thought winning her heart was going to be easy but he was wrong. She is very guarded with him but he knows he will eventually build the trust back between them. They start off really slow and he listens to her. When they talk some of his secrets come out that could destroy them or make them closer. Will Derrick get his second chance or will Zoey leave him just like he did to her all those years ago? Will he ever get Zoey’s heart or will she lock it away for good?

This is by far my favorite sport second chance romance I have read so far. This story has some very strong characters. You will fall in love with Zoey and Derrick very quickly. You will also get to know their friends and they are all very close like family. I love Zoey. She is so strong and independent. She loves with her whole heart and I love that about her. She was so upset with Derrick but she never hated him for what he did to her. Derrick is the perfect football star but with a heart of gold. He knew he did wrong and he did everything to fix it. He is also very swoon worthy with his looks and charm. This author puts the perfect amount of details in her characters they feel like they are one of your friends. They have a very close bond that can never be broken. Zoey and Derrick have very hot chemistry that I had to cool myself down after reading. Their chemistry is undeniable and I loved reading about them. I cannot wait to read more about this amazing group.

Second Half (Coach's Shadow Trilogy Book 1) by Monica DeSimone is the first book in the Coach's Shadow Trilogy. This is a sports romance book about taking second chances and healing. This author has created a story that will take you on a roller coaster ride of various emotions. You will laugh, cry and most likely feel angry in parts. You will enjoy how this author has created a story that will pull you in from the first word. You will enjoy how these characters connect and will pull at your heart strings. Find out what happens when these characters are faced with second chances, loss, and healing.

Eight years ago Derrick Henderickson chose a career over what his heart was telling him. But the choice wasn't as easy as it sounds because it left her completely broken. Now that he is back will she forgive him? Regretting his choice eight years ago, he is now determined to win her back. He wants what they should have already had. When he finds out everything she has been through, will he convince her to trust him?

Zoey McEvoy was broken when he left her eight years ago. Piece by piece she picked herself up and became a strong independent woman. What will happen when he walks right back into her life and make it clear what it is he wants? Will she be receptive? She was shattered the first time, is she strong enough to resist him or will she give him a chance?

Derrick and Zoey's relationship is one that has been hurt in the past and is now given a second chance to live again. What will they do with that second chance? Zoey's not always been known for the best decisions for herself but he is determined to help her make the right one this time. He has been patient with her, waiting for her to give him a chance. Will she ever give him a chance? There are hearts on the line, will their trust be earned or will the chance pass by them. These are two strong characters. Zoey was crushed when he left but she managed to build herself back up, I give her a lot of credit for doing that. She is convinced she doesn't need a man to make her happy will she change her mind? Derrick is a strong, patient, and successful man who just wants to find his happiness again. He seems to be missing something, her. Will he get a chance to prove he is not leaving this time? Will she give him the chance to prove that he is the man she wants him to be? Find out what happens with these two.

This is my first story by Monica DeSimone and I know it won't be my last. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next. Monica lives in New Jersey with her three dogs. Raised by a football coach, it makes sense that her passion is football. She was inspired to write at an early age when she met a fellow author. When she is not writing, you can find her in her backyard with her dogs, family, and friends. This story is a fast paced story that will keep you engaged until the end. You will enjoy how this story will make you lose track of time. You will find yourself needing to see what happens on the next page. You will fall in love with these two characters as they learn through life struggles what love really means. I highly recommend this story as I know you will enjoy reading about this couple as much s I have.

“Love never ends…”

I absolutely adored this book, and read it in one sitting, happy that I picked it up when I had the second one to read, because I would have been so depressed if I couldn’t read on. I am a big fan of football alphas and tattooed alphas and this book gave you both, how much better can it possible get!

Eight years ago, Zoey McEvoy was madly in love with Derrick, ready to graduate college, and anxiously awaiting the draft pick for the NFL. She is a coach’s daughter and so she knows what to expect when she fell for Derrick, one of the best wide receivers in the college level game. “Being the daughter of a professional football coach, I know the sacrifices required to make it in the industry. And make no mistake, football is an industry.” She is just hoping that she can be strong for the two of them no matter the results of his draft pick. “It’s the tree that bends with the wind that survives, and Applebee’s are survivors. I could be that tree that bends with the wind. And survive.” After all this is the love of her life. They are going to get married, together they make up the ‘home team’. “I’m adrift and he is my anchor.”

The results land Derrick with the Carolina Panthers. “Everyone is overjoyed and excited over Derrick becoming a Carolina Panther. A chill snakes down my spine and my stomach drops to my feet, that are no longer steady where I stand; our future is about to drastically change.”
Flash forward to the present day and Zoey McEvoy is a completely different person than she was that day the love of her life was drafted into the NFL. She is starting The Coach’s Shadow Foundation, aptly named for her father and the relationship they had, in his memory. She is using this as a way to grieve the death of her father just eighteen months before the day she is set to have the foundation’s first annual fundraiser event. This party however is not getting off on the best feet at first, with things like her flowers being the wrong ones from what she ordered. She just deals with that when her sister and assistant, Claire tells her that she is going to have to deal with Derrick again. “God, I still ache when I look at him. He fell out of love with me, and I know I shouldn’t hold that against him for the rest of our lives; however, my self-preservation mechanism kicks in and I lash out… I have a love/hate relationship toward Derrick.” Little does she know yet, that he has plans to stay for longer than this party.

What a roller coaster of emotions this book throws at you. It will leave you raw one minute tearing up because you feel the pain of the characters; the next you will be ready to jump in and fix it and cheer them on, even with a bit of humor here and there. I loved the whole gang and I am looking forward to read the next book and see who gets their chance at a second half of love next.

Second Half by Monica DeSimone: 5 star read

Zoey McEvoy was the woman we all wish we could be. She seemed to have the best life of being the coach’s daughter, dating the “star football player” and exuded confidence from every pore in her body. Shockingly, Zoey’s life was shattered into a million pieces and left her on the brink of wanting to take her own life. She felt that she had nothing left to give or had no importance in her life, but then she remembered all of what her late Father taught her and wanted to carry on his memory.
Never in her life did she think that she would have to face the ghost of her past or the one who broke her heart ever again, but somehow Derrick Hendrickson crawled his way back. It was evident to Zoey that Derrick chose his career over her and left her in the dust without one single care in the world, but was she right?
Derrick is very aware of the choices that he made earlier in his life and unknown to Zoey, regrets how things turned out. With the help of his friend and her sister Claire, Derrick attempts to win back the trust and understanding of the woman that he called his own but still loves very dearly. It quickly becomes clear how little Derrick knows of the devastation that he left in his tracks and is shocked to hear about the shell of the woman that Zoey became in his absence. He has to make a decision to be the better man, to be the man she needs and win her back once and for all.
This is a story of the ultimate second chance, the comeback for love if you will. Zoey must decide is she is willing to forgive Derrick for leaving her and breaking his lifelong promise or will she stick to her guns and keep her head buried in her foundation and word to honor her Father’s memory. Neither road is easy and both comes with their own set of problems, but she must rely on her heart to tell her the best way to go.
I LOVE Monica DeSimone and her writing style! I was instantly sucked into this book, completed it in one sitting and then continued on to the next in the series to devour that as well. This book had angst, sass, sexual tension, humor and love- what more could you need in a story? Zoey’s character is one of my favorite female protagonists to date and I found myself instantly rooting for her in the battle of her demons and her heart. Derrick, on the other hand, took a little bit for me to warm up to (I promise he gets better) but he wore me down with his “alpha” ways and who doesn’t love a tattooed football man? This story line is VERY fast paced and easily weaves backstory into present day leaving you wanting more with very page turn. Monica DeSimone has now been added to my “auto-buy” authors list because she hit this series out of the park.

Second Half by Monica DeSimone 5 Stars

This book deals with sensitive subject, suicide. It doesn't glorify it not does it boast about it. It is a true to life story about the before, during, and after a suicide attempt. It is heart wrenching and a tearful story. This book deals with love and love lost. The aftermath of a suicide attempt isn't easy. Monica DeSimone really hit the nail on the head with this tough story. This is one of those books that will stay with you long after you finish the book. The guilt and battle the main character, Zoey, went through along with her family's reaction in the aftermath is very well written.

Zoey is in love! Her boyfriend, Derrick was her whole world! She was also his. He is a college football star with NFL in the future. They couldn't live without each others love and support. Zoey comes from a football family. Her dad was also a college and pro star before retiring and becoming a coach. Zoey was definitely daddy's girl! Mac loved having his daughter on the sidelines with him. She grew up in the spotlight along the side of her dad. She was dubbed coach's shadow and the press had a hay day with this title her whole life. When Zoey and Derrick became a couple, the press commented about how she moved from daddy's shadow and became Derrick's shadow. She was extremely close to her family and they wanted the best for her.

Sometimes what others think is best isn't what s best for you. Sometimes you can't see past your own nose and see the bigger picture. Sometimes it is harder to do what you need than what you think is what you want. When Derrick left for the NFL training camp she was beyond devastated. When she didn't hear from him for months, she fell down a spiraling hole that she didn't see a way out of. What she didn't know was that Derrick was doing the same thing. They couldn't live without each other, but others interfered and did what they thought was the best for each of them individually. That is when Zoey hit rock bottom and there was nothing that her dad, sister, niece, or best friend could do for her.

A heart wrenching story that is a must read! This book explains how there is a life after love and how Zoey had to pick up the broken pieces with the help of her Doctor and family. This book covers many genres from sports to romance. It is beautifully written in Zoey's point of view. This subject is a hard one to write and make it believable, but Monica DeSimone did a wonderful job accomplishing it. I look forward to reading book 2 and 3 in the coach's trilogy. I will have another box of tissues ready!

Second Half is the first book by Monica DeSimone. It is book 1 in the Coach’s Shadow Trilogy.

Zoey and Derrick fell totally and hopelessly in love as teenagers. Their destiny was basically set in stone. They made big plans for the future and life could not get much sweeter for them. Until it wasn't. Zoey’s world came crashing down and she could only guess as to the cause. It was very painful to read of her journey alone. My heart broke for her and I wanted to also know why?

Fast forward a few years and their Paths cross once more. Zoey’s anger at Derrick was off the charts, and no matter what he said or did, Zoey wasn't giving him an inch. Her anger was justified, I felt. You see, not only were hearts broken, they were obliterated. That is not something you get over quickly. It would take years. If ever. The trust was gone and Zoey was terrified to allow him back in of he was only going to walk away later.

The level of anxiety and frustration was extremely high while I read Second Half. The events that took place were heartbreaking and had me crying like a baby. The strength and courage Zoey developed throughout the book was inspiring. I really admired her spirit and I just really connected with her. I also loved Derrick but loved to hate him at times. Zoey fought from rock bottom, and eventually, with Derrick by her side, she made it back to the top once again. This time around, Derrick would be there to catch her if she were to fall, and would spend his entire life worshipping and loving her until the end of time.

My feelings were very mixed throughout the book, and I had a real love/hate vibe going on with both Derrick and Zoey. One minute i wanted to toss the kindle and scream at them to grow up and sort it out, to having my heart almost burst out of my chest because it felt too full of love and happiness for this couple that i had come to adore. Second Half made me feel so many emotions. Some hurt really bad, but 95% of the emotions were truly blissful to feel.

For a debut sports romance, Second Half was a knock down, drag em out success in my opinion. Monica DeSimone had me spellbound with each page turn. I was shocked when it ended as I never wanted it to end. A sizzling and dramatic story with such a high level of quality, I cannot imagine how good the next book in the series is going to be. It was so incredible to read Zoey and Derrick’s story. I am hooked on Monica DeSimone and her realistic and sinfully sexy series.

Second Half (Coach's Shadow Trilogy Book 1)
By: Monica DeSimone
5 out of 5 stars

The story Second Half (Coach's Shadow Trilogy Book 1) by Monica DeSimone is a sports/romance book. This is the story of Zoey McEvoy and Derrick Henderickson. They were so in love and then Derrick broke Zoey’s heart. Zoey was devastated and still feels the effects of the loss of Derrick. Now he is back in town and this Bad Boy of the NFL has set his sights on regaining Zoey’s heart. Zoey is sure her heart will not survive if he walks away again. Will Zoey take a second chance at love with Derrick or will she push him away?

This is a love story with two characters that are haunted by the past. Zoey fell apart when Derrick chooses his career over her eight years ago. She is a strong, independent woman and has recently started a foundation in her father’s name. She puts all her time and energy into this to keep busy. Zoey is managing the first annual ball for this organization when Derrick walks back into her life and makes his intentions clear. Zoey soon comes to realize that her best friends and even her sister are in favor of her and Derrick getting back together and this leads to some interesting conversations. Zoey sometimes doesn’t make the best decisions regarding her health and well-being, something Derrick is determined to change. One conversation leads to another and secrets are revealed. Will Zoey be able to ever trust Derrick with her heart again?

Derrick has always regretted his decision to fully pursue his career and leave Zoey behind. He is now bound and determined to gain her back and live the life that should have been. Derrick is shocked when revelations are made and he finds out what happened to Zoey when he left. Derrick is a patient man when it comes to Zoey. He lets her talk and wants her to trust him again. Will Derrick be able to convince Zoey that he is here to stay and that all he wants is her or are things too broken to fix?

This is the first book I have read by the author and I love the way she writes and also the characters she creates. Both Zoey and Derrick as amazing. They also have amazing friends that would help them any way they can. Find out if Zoey and Derrick get their HEA! This book does include adult language and adult situations including steamy love scenes. It would be for those 18 years of age or older.

Zoey McEvoy has not been whole since the love of her life walked away shattering her, taking her to some deep dark places. They were meant to be a team, the two of them against the world. She has spent the last eight years trying to make herself whole again but has been barely hanging on. Zoey has tried to put herself back together, trying to rebuild herself one step at a time, one piece at a time. Now she is faced with the man who walked away from her and piece by piece she is losing herself again. But the truths she learns tears her heart and show she really didn’t know the people who were meant to love her the most. How can she ever let this man back into her life after what he has done to her? She is supposed to be a strong independant woman but this man can bring hr to her knees. When he learns the truth of what happened all those years ago will he still want her?

Derrick Henderickson chose his career over the woman he supposedly loved. Now he is back and determined to get her back. But when he finds out the secret she has been hiding it breaks his heart. He realises that he did not just hurt her but he completely and utterly broke her to a depth he finds hard to comprehend. How can he win back the one woman he decimated? How can he get her to trust him again? Now he finds himself in a fight for her but will she ever let him back in? How can he prove to her that he will never walk away from her again? How can he prove to her that she has only ever been the one he has ever loved?

Will Zoey and Derrick finally find common ground? Will they be able to find their way back to each other? Can he repair the damage he has done to this beautiful soul?

This is the first book of the series and it is a good read. There is lots of heartbreak and learning to trust again in this beautiful bad sad story. The female characters in this story have so much strength and compassion that you can’t help but want to stay with them every step of the way. Monica weaves a story that you feel to your soul?

Second Half is the first book in the Coach’s Shadow Trilogy by Monica DeSimone and overall a very enjoyable read. This is the author’s debut novel. She has written a pretty powerful and emotionally charged story with a storyline that may be a trigger for some readers. It didn’t take me long to be fully invested in the story of Zoey and Derrick.
The way the author described Zoey’s battle with depression really struck home with me. Her story felt real. The author did a really good job with how she wrote about such a sensitive subject, not only with the depression but also the attempted suicide. It was all written about really sensitively and respectfully. I liked that even years after what happened the author reminds us the depression is something that can come back at any time and how hard Zoey worked to overcome her triggers for her depression. I really liked Zoey’s character, she had been broken and down but she worked hard to build herself back up again. She threw herself into the Coach’s Shadow Foundation in memory of her Dad.
I will be totally honest when I say I wasn’t sure about Derrick. It wasn’t until the very end of the story where my opinion about him began to change. I did find that he was a little harsh with Zoey at times considering what he had put her through. As the story progressed we started to find out more about Derrick and the reasoning behind his decisions.
I thought that the story had a great pace to it and the characters were likeable. I loved the relationship between Zoey and Claire. With such an up and down home life it seems that Claire and her daughter Sasha really were the only stable things in Zoey’s life before and after Derrick.
The characters really made this story for me, I thought that they were well developed not just Zoey and Derrick but also the secondary characters.
If you are a fan of second chance love stories or stories with a strong female who has overcome issues then you will definitely enjoy Second Half! I highly recommend it.
