Pretty readable little story.

description

Merlin (<--the Merlin) is gathering some of the past, present, and future Sorcerer Supremes to fight some Big Battle that only their combined forces can fight.
Very cool.

description

Of course, 5 minutes into the movie, Merlin gets himself killed.
But is he reeeeeealy dead? <--I don't know yet, random Goodreader

description

Doesn't matter.
What matters is that these guys all have to work together to save the world, right?
Yes! And no.
Because apparently, they all have secret reasons for being there.
Dun, dun, duuuun....

description

I liked this! Not only do you get a fun magical romp, but you also get to find out about these new/old characters, and their backstories are pretty cool. I especially liked the chick who was not only a Sorcerer Supreme, but also the Ghost Rider!

description

Looking forward to the next volume!

Merlin the magician needs help from a bunch of Sorcerers Supreme. It seems he locked away something evil a long time ago and because this is a comic book (prisons – metaphorical or otherwise can’t hold EVIL – Comic Book Rule CXLI – Part H, section 10) it apparently got out.

After a run in with the alien who wanted to wipe out magic from the universe Dr. Strange isn’t his usual magical self. But he has an axe.

Merlin has drawn Sorcerers Supreme from all over the time line…

…including an older Wiccan from the future, a punk-assed teenaged “Ancient” One, a Brazilian cowgirl mage, a Native American Demon Rider…

…and Sir Isaac Newton, who has his very own Mindful (ha) One, and who practiced the mystic arts when he wasn’t doing the apple/gravity bit or inventing calculus to bedevil future high- school students.

(Kids, I can tell you that you will never need calculus in the Adult Entertainment industry.)

Yet, it seems for naught.

Famous last words.

Included here is a Create Your Own Crazy Adventure.

I guess it can be kinda fun if you want to jump around the comic and see what kind of result you’ll get based on Dr. Strange’s choices…

Me? I just bulled through it because I’m relatively old and wanted to take a nap.

Bottom Line: Thompson does a yeoman’s job on the story but never quite hits the magical sweet spot and the art kind of looks like a second rate Mike Allred’s attempt at the rendering of mystical artistic mayhem. It was serviceable.

Three and a half stars.

Sir Isaac Newton sure lends a lot of gravitas to a story when he’s cast in the role of villain.

(See what I did there?)

Perfectly fine, if unremarkable, entertainment. Solid art. And Merlin’s in it, so there’s that.

Merlin snags Doctor Strange out of our time to help along with the other Sorcerers Supreme he's gathered to fight the Forgotten. We have a young, brash Ancient One, a Ghost Rider, Isaac Newton and a Mindless One, Nina the Conjurer, and an older Wiccan from the future. Each issue focuses on an individual and explains their reasons for helping.

The Good: The Choose Your Own Adventure book was gimmicky, but served a purpose.

The Bad: Robbie Thompson does here what he does in all his books, he gives a serviceable story but nothing ever earth shattering. It's always, "Eh, that was OK." Javier Rodriguez's art isn't nearly as good as it was in Spider-Woman. It's much less polished. Maybe he's having a problem drawing a team book.

The Ugly: Doctor Strange with a bushy beard... is just strange looking, frankly. I hated the look.

The recently de-powered Dr. Strange gets kidnapped by Merlin to join a rag-tag group of Sorcerers Supreme plucked from all across the length and breadth of the timestream to fight a threat that no one Sorcerer Supreme could face alone.

This was a reasonably entertaining read but I kept expecting it to be explained why, with the entire timestream to choose from, Merlin decided to pull Dr. Strange out of a point in time when he was at his least powerful... Maybe it'll be explained in volume two... Or maybe it was already explained and I missed it...

You do get a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure issue, though, which was fun.

I'm trying to be better about rating the comics I read because, really, if you love the movies you should give the comic books a chance.

Doctor Strange and the Sorcerer Supremes is pretty great and doesn't really require a lot of additional explanation. I think most newcomers would feel comfortable starting here.

Merlin, THAT Merlin, has gone through time and space and collected all of the Sorcerer Supremes from different times to try and fight a new evil. It is a fun cast of characters and the choose your own adventure was a blast. I cant wait until the next volume comes out.

Javier Rodriguez's touch is golden. He's maybe the best cartoonish around. I love every Marvel book that he's done. And he's done it again here. This is one damn beautiful book to look at. Perfect characterizations and expressions and all that eye-popping color! Thompson's story is a blast to read as well. This is a book superior to the main Doctor Strange title that spawned it. Must reading for all Marvel fans.

Mostly here for Future!Wiccan, honestly. It's not a bad story, and I really enjoyed the Choose Your Own Adventure issue. It's a gimmick, but it's a gimmick being used to a story telling purpose, and I like that.

Mildly amusing with nice art.

World: The art I really like, it's emotive and full of personal voice I like it. The world building is solid with a lot of different characters that are distinct and fun. I like how the individual issues give background instead of massive info dump in the beginning. The pieces of the mystic MU I am enjoying being not a Marvel person, it's fresh to me and I don't know how new it is or if it's nostalgia. Conjurer is the coolest.

Story: Fairly straightforward and fun. It's basic in premise and execution with expected results. What makes it a bit more are the little character centric parts of each issue. The banter is solid and entertaining. I like the idea of all the sorcerer supremes together and it entertained me. Is it super original and surprising, not really but I liked it and the art helped a lot.

Characters: A fun group of characters that made up the sorcerers. Strange is Strange and nothing new here as this is a side tale from the main series. I like the Conjure cause of the look (I'm a summer for that era and the gauntlets look cool and she has a fucking guns sword). The rest of the cast are also colorful and interesting, good stuff.

Basic in premise and quite fun, it's an interesting ride if you want to be a completionist, does it add anything of note to canon, not really.

Onward to the next book!

Doctor Strange gets recruited into a team of Sorcerers Supremes' by Merlin (yes THAT Merlin), in order to fight "the forgotten", who have now grown to be a terrible threat.

Robbie Thompson is one of those solid writer's that usually doesn't get that much attention. I really enjoy his characterization and plot pace, and that was all on display in this book. In a book where there are many characters, and each one interesting in their own way, Thompson is able to give each one a unique voice, and have them interact with each other in a really entertaining way. The story itself is also interesting and I found myself glued to it. Sometimes in Dr. Strange stories, the plot can get so esoteric that they sometimes lose focus. But here, we have a streamlined story with interesting characters and good interpersonal dynamics. What more could you want from a Dr. Strange book?

The art by Javier Rodriguez is fantastic. I was really enjoying his style and the way it plays with the world of Dr. Strange. Unfortunately he doesn't complete the full arc, and the other artists - while good in their own right - paled in comparison to Rodriguez' art. Overall, a good job by all artists involved.

If you're a fan of Dr. Strange, this is a good one to pick up, especially if you're familiar with the older Dr. Strange stories.

Spin-off team-up with predecessors and successors ranging from Merlin and a young not-yet-Ancient One to future Wiccan and a Native American Ghost Rider. The story's a bit unclear in places, and the character interplay sometimes devolves into tics, but it has a good sense of the absurd and some fabulously weird layouts.

[Read as single issues]
Doctor Strange is riding high for the first time in years thanks to a certain movie, so now's the best time for a spin-off series, of course.

Teaming up a magically depleted Strange with Sorcerers Supreme from across the ages including Merlin, Isaac Newton, a young Ancient One, a Ghost Rider, and Wiccan from the future, the series teams these characters to go after The Forgotten, a monstrocity only Javier Rodriguez could design that threatens all of magic (of course it does, because Strange never catches a break).

Robbie Thompson brings these characters together nicely and then spends each subsequent issue exploring one of them in more depth so that by the time the first arc is over we've seen a bit more of almost everybody, which makes the final betrayal even more powerful. Thompson has a way of getting into his characters' heads that I really enjoy, and he still manages it here on what I think is his first team book as well as he did on his previous solo series.

The previously mentioned Javier Rodriguez steps over from Spider-Woman to draw this series, and his innovative layouts lend themselves to this time-warping, reality-destroying adventure.

Two mystical thumbs up for this one.

3 1/2 Stars.

Have you ever wanted to read a series where multiple Sorcerers Supreme showed up to try and help save the day? That’s pretty much the plot of this series; though naturally there are a few hitches. Still, if you’re greedy for Doctor Strange material (like myself) I doubt you’ll complain.

I'm a huge Doctor Strange fan, but the premise of this spinoff series sounded pretty corny the first time I heard it: Merlin (yes, that one) recruits Doctor Strange to join a super-team of Sorcerers Supreme drawn from various centuries. I was sure it would be awful.

It isn't. This first volume was FUN, had an interesting group of characters, and had just enough trippy splash-panel scenes to occasionally dazzle. And while opinions seem mixed on the "gimmicky" choose-your-own-adventure episode, I thought that was great. I would have appreciated a bit more explanation — as another reviewer said, why on earth would Merlin choose today's Doctor Strange, nearly powerless after the Empirikul invasion, instead of Strange at the peak of his timeline? But I'm willing to see if that comes in the next arc.

This is definitely a beginning and not a complete story unto itself. If it survives, I really hope the series dives more deeply into the characters and their different approaches to the awesome responsibility of being a Sorcerer Supreme. I especially want more from Nina the Conjuror (a Brazilian sorcerer from the 1950s with pistol-swords… Pistol-swords!) and Kushala (a Native American ghost rider from the 1800s). Until then, I'll just enjoy a fun story that frankly feels more like classic Doc to me than the main book does right now.

This book is just on the edge of being a good read, but it isn't quite there yet. It's imaginative but also formulaic. There are some interesting new characters that I'd like to know more about, but I'm also dismayed because Strange can't use magic as a result of whatever happened in his own book.

The art is atypical, with creative creature drawings but is also a little too cartoony. One issue has a "choose your own path" written into it. Kinda cool, but a little gimmicky, but did fit into the story at least.

This first volume doesn't complete the story either, so looks like I'll be waiting for the next one.

This was a fast paced, action packed ride.
I enjoyed this read, as current and future meet, to have one goal. Along with Strange, other characters join. Not all characters are who they seem to be.
I enjoyed the "choose your ending" vibe at the end. It was a fun interactive way to involve the reader.

Read mostly for the Kushala backstory (will be in Ghost Rider movie and Jen Bartel did a beautiful variant cover of her recently)

Fun team-up story with all the Socrcerers Supremes throughout time. Its done well enough for those without Marvel Magic context to enjoy. Read on digital and perhaps better suited for a physical copy as there is a fun page turn gimmick in issue 4 I believe

¡¡Tiene una grapa de elige tu propia aventura!!

Algunas cosas de cómo avanza la trama me han chirriado un poco pero lo ha compensado con creces en lo gráfico. Además el guión, al margen de eso, tiene cosas brillantes.

Team out of time, take #304...

Merlin gets a team together to right the wrongs he may have made on his own. This is something akin to Avengers Forever. It's a fun little 'one off' that doesn't do much to mess with current Marvel timeline messes.

Awesome comic.
Merlin kidnaps the doctor and brings him to another time where he meets a bunch of other sorcerer supremes from different time periods.
They are attacked by a creature who we later learn is the combination of souls who had practiced dark magic. They have escaped and want to get revenge.
The creature kills Merlin and locks the sorcerers in the cage it had been locked in.
Sir Isaac Newton (also a sorcerer supreme) kills the creature and takes a powerful book, betraying all the other sorcerers in the process. Newton travels to Doctor Stranges time and wrecks havoc.
The ending was cool because they turned it into a choose your story type thing, the reader got to choose who Doctor strange got to save first and how the story progresses.

This feels more like an event story, maybe even a maxi-series than an ongoing series. It just...well, despite the title, Doctor Strange is no more the lead in this book than any of the others, less than some. The occasion for the gathering of the Sorcerors Supreme is instigated by Merlin's choices, problems, and plans. In fact Doctor Strange is the last to arrive, and so as readers we're dropped in blind to the middle of a battle and only slowly figure out what's going on. This can be okay, if the point of view allows us to experience the disorder/confusion etc. Through a character, but the book doesn't really do that. And then it suddenly flips on itself--new bad buy, new problems, and the exact events are rather murky...and then it just ends. It doesn't finish, it doesn't even stop at a coherent point in the arc. It just stops.

Now the potential is there for a strong book, but there's no continuing fixed reason for these time displaced sorcerors to stick together, beyond the point they all get back home. It just feels flimsy, lacking the roots/foundation necessary to sustain a long-term ongoing. I'm hoping that some of the exceptionally large scale ideas being played through this first volume (and the last volumes of Dr. Strange's own series) can be made to work and carry the series plotline forward.

The beginning of this was kinda slow, but it did pick up as it went along.
This series follows after the events of Doctor Strange Vol. 2: The Last Days of Magic, but that’s not really important, what is important is that every Sorcerer Supreme that has ever lived or will live teams up to fight an unstoppable menace. It was really cool to see all these different Sorcerer Supremes interacting with each other, but there weren’t alot of fun dynamics going on, and you don’t get to know too much about each of them without just a brief explanation, but I did like learning about Kushala’s backstory; it was heartbreaking and badass. By far the best issues were the last 2 issues in the collection, I don’t wanna spoil anything, but something crazy happens at the end of issue 4 and Issue 5 explains the why and how, and it’s so interesting, and Issue 6 is a CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE STORY AND IT IS INCREDIBLE!!!

Overall, This series basically feels like X-Men: Battle of the Atom, but with Sorcerers Supreme and it’s an ongoing. The character dynamics could’ve been better and more enjoyable, but this was decent. The artwork was great when it was doing something really cool and trippy, and the 6th issue pretty much gave me life.

This is some quality insanity. Merlin locked up a bunch of (maybe) bad magicians long, long ago and now that they've escaped as one giant monster, Merlin needs to travel through time/space to gather the Sorcerers Supreme to battle this impossible beastie. Doctor Strange gets in the mix, of course, as the current Sorcerer Supreme, but there are a number of other interesting additions who all play large parts in the narrative. If you're looking for 100% Stephen Strange, prepare to be disappointed because he disappears for large portions of this volume.

While the overarching plot is pretty simple, the execution in this volume is deeply complex. Time travel - backwards, forwards, and sideways - comes into play in every issue. Two page spreads in mad Escher prints are common. The final issue is in a choose-your-own adventure format (!!!). And yet, the art is always clear and easy to follow, with excellent, unusual panels that work surprisingly well.

I found myself shaking my head half the time while reading because something baffling was happening. But I was smiling the whole time. Now I'm desperate for more adventures with these Sorcerers Supreme - they can even leave Doctor Strange behind if they want.

When "The Forgotten" strikes out at the realm of magic (after the modern day invasion of the Empirikul), Merlin travels throughout time and gathers up many of the "Sorcerer Supremes" to help. Against this menace: Doctor Strange, Nina the Conjuror, Wiccan, Kushala (who transforms into "Demon Rider"), Yao (the kid who grows up to become "The Ancient One", teacher of Stephen Strange), Sir Issac Newton, and his servant "The Mindful One". But "The Forgotten" is not exactly what he seems to be... and one of the Sorcerers will betray them all.
Obtaining the "Word of God" from "The Forgotten"'s dying body, Sir Issac Newton throws the rest of them in a dimension where the must fight to escape and Marvel employs a method in a comic I've not seen them do: Choose Your Own Adventure, which felt very refreshing to me in this medium.
Volume 1 ends on a cliffhanger, with the Sorcerers Supreme catching Newton in the act of defeating and destroying the current Avengers..
A refreshing title and one that shows promise. The characters are well thought out and not thrown into situations they can get out of easy. Recommend.

I like the direction this story is taking after the decimation of magic in recent Doctor Strange stories, which left me somewhat cool. It was interesting to see that though he still lacked the ability to use magic, he still had all the knowledge from a long time as the Sorcerer Supreme, and some of his abilities are still in his arsenal, particularly his ability to astral project. I liked the other characters, as well. It's interesting to see a grown-up Wiccan (though I am surprised that he still goes by that), and Merlin is interesting, as well. Sir Isaac Newton is apparently a callback to an older story that I have never read, and the two other, female characters are new, as far as I can tell, but one houses a spirit of vengeance, which is interesting, and the other has some interesting Asgardian magic. The final issue was in a choose your own adventure format, which was particularly difficult to follow in digital format, but called back some fun memories for me. I would like to see where this goes, and if it brings back some of Doctor Strange's classic spells.

So much to love about this volume. Merlin travels in time to gather the best Sorcerer Supremes to fight an evil called The forgotten. Stephen Strange is the last to be summoned.

We see a familiar personality amongst this team of sorcerers. He is none other than Newton! Sir Issac Newton!

As a sorcerer, Sir Issac Newton, is seen dressed in a strange alien-like armor. We've always known him as the science guy, but in the realm of magic, he's something else. Then there are slew of characters I was introduced to through this book.

The final issue #6 is my favorite, because like the Doctor Strange film, we become an audience to the manipulation of time. Unlike the film, this issue doesn't make us just a mute spectator. We're given powers to make choices, that will help our heroes to escape danger. In a way, we become participants. Time becomes tangible. This kind of storytelling is difficult to achieve. I applaud the creators for making this work of art.
