Tyler Stone has become the most hunted man in the known galaxy. Branded a traitor and reviled by the very people he hopes to save, he must find a way to be true to himself and his people while the combined might of the Xen Empire is focused on making a bloody example of him to any that would oppose their rule. But he is not alone. Besides his lover--the fierce warrior Major Mori Skye--his former subordinate, Emily Martin, has realized the lie under which she had fought and killed and has joined forces with her former commander. Although she publicly leads the campaign to arrest him, Martin's true mission is a clandestine plot to spark an uprising. But Astra Varus, the leader of the Humani, is as clever as she is ruthless. If Martin isn't careful, her actions could not only betray Stone, but lead to her own death as well. Despite the chaos surrounding him as galactic warfare consumes more and more planets, the greatest resistance Stone faces is from within as he prepares to lead the attack on his own homeworld: Alpha Humana itself.
Pretty good book, pretty good series. I like this author. There seem to be a whole lot of fairly unknown, but really pretty good people writing sci-fi - mostly military sci-fi and space opera - and my only real complaint, which I see many others comment on, is that many of them are self publishing and most of them have unnecessary and unprofessional grammatical errors, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why these people don't hire at least a proofreader, let alone a copy editor! I'm guessing they're not making a killing in royalties, so they don't think they can afford it, or maybe they think people don't care (but they're very wrong), or maybe some are too stupid or lazy to either proof themselves or to recognize mistakes in the text. All I know is, when I was submitting my book manuscripts to my agent or various publishers, the damn things had been proofed over and over by ME before being proofed again by a professional at the publishing house. I - and other professional writers - didn't want to look like an ignorant, amateur hack. Unlike most people self publishing today. But then I'm biased. These last few comments aren't necessarily intended to reflect on this author alone. Indeed, nearly all of these new sci-fi authors are guilty of this, some not too badly, some virtually unreadable. But the thing that keeps me coming back is many of them can spin a good tale, and produce high quality series that the better known, traditional authors often simply can't match. And that's impressive! Anyway, recommended book and series.
I loved this third book in the series. There was a lot of action which is always a draw for me. In particular though, I loved the character writing in this one. The crazy and angry whirlwind that is Emily Martin kept me from putting the book down. The author did a great job of making me feel her anger and what some might call post traumatic stress. To me, she feels like a character on the edge and you just never know what is going to happen or what things are going to set her off. I loved that. I was also able to really feel Stone's uncertainty and emotion when it came to being pulled in two different directions. So my rating would be 4.5 stars if I could give half stars. The only reason for the half star off is the fact that I felt that Stone or someone from his group should have considered that the disgruntled Maxa might have taken the actions he did. To me, it should have been the first thing they would have thought of. Other than that though, I felt that this was the best of the three in the series so far and I really cannot wait for the next one.
I forgot just how good this series is until I started a re-read in preparation for book 5, Schism, to be released.
Dorsey does such an incredible job of accurately portraying the emotions behind going into battle, losing friends and comrades, and being separated from your loved ones, as well as the anger and pain in feeling betrayed and having fought for a cause that was a lie.
His main characters are realistic and have such depth, they feel like friends.
I highly, highly recommend this series, or any of his others.
I'm not sure if this book was shorter or I just read it faster because I didn't want to put it down. Emily Martin has got to be one of my favorite female characters, right behind Honor Harrington.
