Former Navy SEAL Max Brannigan is a loner with a strong protective streak and an ocean of survivor’s guilt that drives him to take risks no sane man would take. When he gets the news his billionaire father died and left him a horse farm in Kentucky, he’s busy protecting a group of American military contractors in a war zone. The first moment he’s able, he’ll fly back to the US and dispose of the farm. What does a man like him need horses for anyway? Of all the things his father could have left him, this certainly ranks up there as the most bizarre.
Elinor Applegate lives for her horses, but life on the farm isn’t easy. Once-thriving Applegate Farm has fallen on hard times in the past few years. It was only with an influx of cash from her mother’s old friend that Ellie’s been able to keep the family operation going. All her hopes to turn around the business and buy back her rights to the farm lie on the hooves of a colt destined to greatness. She’s just got to get him there first.
But when sexy, ruthless, infuriating Max Brannigan shows up, Ellie realizes her troubles are worse than she thought. He knows nothing about horses—and he cares less than nothing about her dreams. To Max, the horses are useless and have to go—in spite of the fact that every encounter with Ellie only makes him want to drag her into his arms and kiss the fire right out of her. But Ellie will fight hard to keep her dreams alive, even if she has to fight dirty. Max has spent most of his life protecting people and assets from danger—but can he protect himself when Ellie launches a full-scale assault against the walls surrounding his heart?
Lynn Raye Harris is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of sizzling military romantic suspense novels and contemporary romance novels. She lives in Alabama with her husband (former military), her cat, and her American Saddlebred horse.
This is one of the best books I've read by Lynn Raye Harrris, and I loved everything about her contribution to this ground breaking series. Max and Ellie are opposites in every way, but their instant dislike for each other made me smile because their love/hate relationship promises to cause sparks of both anger and red-hot passion. They are both strong and very independent characters with a will of iron that has served them well in their lives to date. Ellie is doing her best to keep her beloved farm in the black, but circumstances beyond her control have her working tirelessly around the clock to make her dreams come true. And Max has had a lonely and tough life growing up without his mother but he's been a SEAL and a soldier for hire and he's disciplined and tough so neither Max, nor Ellie have any plans to be the loser in their unusual partnership. The enemies to friends trope is a fan favorite because of the fine line between love and hate and Max and Ellie's volatile relationship makes this an awesome read. l thoroughly enjoyed the Kentucky horse farm setting and because of the fine writing of this talented author, I could actually picture the horses, the bar, the old farmhouse and the rolling hills in my mind while reading this sexy romance. I read a complimentary copy of this book and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
Lynn Raye Harris – Max - Book 5 (7 Brides For 7 Brothers Series with 7 different authors)
MAX Brannigan’s Story
Ms. Harris’s installment of this series is fast, fun and ohhhh so SEXY and HOT. The premise for the series is 7 sexy Brannigan brothers whose mother passed away when some of them were small. After her death, their father didn’t seem to be able to function as a father without his wife by his side. She was the love of his life and he buried himself in building his media empire and became an absent father with lots of nannies for his sons. And now, even the brothers didn’t get together very often.
They each received notification that their father died alone, his choice, with only his medical team caring for him. The real money portion of the billions would be distributed in 5 years, but he left each of them an inheritance “now”. As each son grieves a father that had faded from their lives years ago, they are taken on a journey that I believe their father hoped would detour each of them from making his mistake, becoming workaholic, and no one by their side to love and cherish.
Former Navy SEAL Max Brannigan is a loner with a strong protective element that made him good at his job. He now worked as contractor still going to all the hot spots of the world, and doing what the U.S. government couldn’t or shouldn’t. To say his job is high risk is an understatement. He takes risk that no one else could consider.
After Max received notice that his father had died and none of his brothers even knew he was sick, he was pissed but he too was grieving for a father that had faded from their lives a long time ago.
Since Max was “war zone in the sand box” on assignment, he waited for several months to open his envelop. He was shocked to say the least because he was willed a horse farm in Kentucky. He decided to take time to go to Kentucky and dispose of the farm and get back to business – war.
After arriving and meeting the owner, Elinor Applegate, he realizes things are not as simple as he thought. This specific farm and Elinor’s mother were where Max’s mother hung out, rode horses, before she met Mr. Brannigan. The farm was on hard times and the Applegate’s borrowed money from Mr. Brannigan to run the farm but mostly pay for Elinor’s mothers health bills before she passed away.
Now what is Max going to do. He wanted the money for the sale to start his own Security Company with x-military folks and keep doing what he was doing in war zones. And the biggest problem is that he is so attracted to Elinor that he often must leave the room when she walks in.
Can they keep their hands off each other? Will Max be able to sell the farm and then what about Elinor, where will she go? Ride this jouney with Max and find out if it is even possible for them to get their own HEA. Max doesn’t think so. Find out.

Hottie Ex-military man and Horses...Love this series and it's beautiful settings!
I recently binge read the entire 7 Brides for 7 Brothers series while on vacation in Hawaii. To me the island of Kauai is one of the most romantic places in the world. So, what better place to read the collaborative romance series of some of my favorite romance authors! I know some of you might be thinking you could find other things to do then read when in Hawaii. But really between the river cruise, and sunset catamaran cruise, snorkeling and trekking through beautiful tropical gardens, there is plenty of time to eat breakfast on your patio, sit at the three tier pool at your resort or just soak up the sun on a not so crowed beach on the island. This romance series by Roxanne St. Clair, Joanne Ross, Christine Ridgeway, Melody Anne ,Ruth Cardello, Barbara Freethy and Lynne Raye Harris, is the perfect island vacation companion (second to my spouse of course!) I admit I might have skipped a few sunsets just to keep reading, much to my brother and sister-in-law’s dismay! After all this was supposed to be a romantic couple get away. Oh but no one writes melt your heart romance like these authors! I first encountered this series in one of the authors’ newsletters and was immediately intrigued and ordered the entire series right then. It is available on Kindle Unlimited and can be read with your subscription but as my Unlimited was full at the time, I purchased the whole set. Something I rarely do! However, I was anxious to have this set for my vacation. Two things attracted me to this series. First, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers has to be one of my all- time favorite musicals. My millennial uber-feminist daughter just can’t see the romance in being snowed in on a mountain with 7 men who pretty much kidnapped you in order to “trap” you into marriage! But having been snowed in with her very sexy mountain man father, I can see how love can blossom in some not so great circumstances. I couldn’t resist seeing how these authors handled 7 ultra-independent billionaire brothers finding their true loves in some less than perfect situations. The second factor that I found interesting was the idea of seven authors collaborating on one series. This is not an anthology of these romance writers novellas or short stories. This is a collaboration where these authors with different writing styles, characterization and romance genres (contemporary, suspense, chick lit etc.) agreed to a specific plot line , characters and how settings, personalities were all going to fit together. I have had personal experience with collaborating with other authors on a novel and the result was less than satisfactory. Of course, I was a young Honors English student and the collaboration was on a school assignment, so my income and career were not at stake. Still it requires a lot of time, interaction and communication between authors. In order to get the plot to be consistent, the interactions between different characters (the one you are responsible for and the others your fellow authors are writing about)to flow seamlessly and the timing between chapters correct can take months of meetings, conference calls, endless sleepless nights and a few strained friendships to get it right. These ladies not only did that flawlessly, they have gone on to collaborate again in 7 Brides for 7 soldiers. And if you can believe their newsletters, they still admire each other and are willing to continue to work together! My own experience with collaboration left me traumatized and afraid to write for years! The novels are complete with no cliffhangers and thus could be read as stand- alone. I think it is best if you read the series in order starting with book 1 Luke by Barbara Freethy and ending with Finn by JoAnn Ross. Each of the 7 Brannigan Brothers has his own personality, lifestyle and own brand of sexy manhood. Yet, they all share love for their siblings and a brokenness from an early family tragedy. As I said the flawless consistency in the interactions between the brothers from book to book as well as a smooth timeline that is adhered to by each author is amazing. There is more than enough steamy romance in each book without overwhelming the storyline. Each brother comes to terms with his roadblocks to love in a different way and a different setting from Yosemite to Italy. I can see how this allowed each writers’ special style to be showcased. The descriptions of the settings made the books come to life for me and made me feel like I was experiencing the scene with the characters. Being able to get lost in a book, leaving my own fears, problems and insecurities behind even for an hour or so a day was heavenly. That feeling of timelessness, escape from reality, is to me a mark of great romantic fiction. The authors of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers achieve that in this series! I hope you keep reading this series because Max has 6 sexy brothers..Yum!
Good book. Max is one of seven brothers, each of whom received odd bequests from their father upon his death. For Max, he was puzzled when he received the deed to a Kentucky horse farm. As a former SEAL and current security operative, the last thing he needs is a horse farm. He plans to go to Kentucky when he can, check the place out, and sell it to raise the money he needs to start his own security firm.
Ellie is the last living Applegate on the farm that's been in her family for four generations. She's doing her best to keep the farm going, helped by a loan from an old friend of her mother's. She has big plans to pay off the loan, but it's going to take a little time. Time that may have just run out.
I liked both Ellie and Max. Ellie is hard-working, determined, and caring. Her farm and the horses mean the world to her. I loved seeing her with those horses, from the pregnant mare to Champ, the horse who holds all her hopes and dreams. There are times when it seems that she works 24 hours a day. Ellie also has a big heart. I loved seeing her friendship with Lacey and the fun they had together. Ellie also watched out for Lacey, who had issues with an obnoxious ex-boyfriend. I liked Max, too, though there were a few times I wanted to shake him. Max has a tremendous protective streak that started when he was a kid. Even though he's a middle brother, he felt he had to watch over them, especially after their mother died. That protectiveness grew stronger when he was a SEAL and later as he worked security is world hotspots. Max has some commitment issues thanks to the way his father withdrew from the family after his wife's death. He doesn't believe in love, despite seeing four of his brothers fall.
There were sparks between Max and Ellie from the beginning. He arrived expecting a farm of racehorses that he could sell for big bucks, and instead found a bunch of "prancers." This attitude did not endear him to Ellie. He made it clear from the start that he wants to sell and move on. Ellie does not just roll over and accept his offer. She is determined to keep the farm, but that means she has to keep Max from selling it before she can complete her plans. It was fun to see Ellie push back against Max and to see his amusement at her misunderstandings of the type of person he is. I enjoyed watching the attraction build as they learned more about each other. It wasn't long before they went from adversaries to friends, and from there to lovers. Max was a bit freaked out by his attraction to Ellie. He has no intention of sticking around; watching the grass grow would drive him nuts, but he keeps picturing himself in her future. Ellie knows he doesn't plan to stay and tries to protect her heart, but her feelings can't be denied. I ached for both of them at the end as Max tried to run from his emotions. I had to laugh at his "aha" moment as he finally realized the truth. I liked the ending and seeing that hint of vulnerability in him as he faced Ellie.
Like his brothers in the other books, Max discovers that the off-the-wall inheritance wasn't so odd after all. Each son has been given something that their father believes will help them avoid making the mistakes he did. Finding out about his mother's connection to Applegate Farm helps Max see a different side of his father. Seeing Ellie's commitment to the continuation of her family's traditions also makes him look at the farm from another angle. I liked seeing the changes he went through as all of these things caused him to re-examine his life and his plans.
When Former Navy SEAL Max Brannigan gets the news his billionaire father has died and left him a horse farm in Kentucky, he’s too busy going on missions in a war zone. He finally has some downtime and flies back to the States with the intention of disposing of this farm as soon as possible. He has no idea why his father would leave him a horse farm of all things.
Elinor Applegate loves for her horses and her life on the farm. The past few years have been a struggle and she is desperately trying to revive the once-thriving Applegate Farm. An influx of cash from her mother’s old friend Colin Brannigan enabled Ellie to keep the family operation going. She has all her hopes set on a champion colt that she is training.
But when sexy, ruthless, infuriating Max Brannigan shows up, Ellie realizes her troubles are far worse than she thought. Max was expecting a farm of racing horses not "prancers", as he calls them. He thinks they're useless and doesn't see how they can possibly bring in an influx of cash. Max's and Ellie's first meeting will be full of zingers that builds to a steaming chemistry.
Max, just like his brothers, will learn that their father really did know each of them.
The fifth book in the series is another good one. Max is a former Navy SEAL of works private security in awful places. Basically, doing much of what he did for the Navy but for a private company. He goes to Kentucky to see the horse farm he inherited before selling it. He wants to sell it so he can open his own private security firm that specializes in guarding people who have to travel to dangerous places. He assumed the horse farm would have been thoroughbreds and is disappointed they aren't. He's intrigued by Ellie whose family owned the farm for 4 generations. He realizes how hard she works, how much she loves the farm and why she had to accept new ownership. Ellie wants to buy the farm back and has a plan to do so. She just needs time. Max & Ellie have an instant attraction. Both are caring individuals who always seem to put others first. It was a good story with a great ending.
Max Brannigan, one of seven Brannigans with an odd inheritance from their father, finds he owns a horse ranch. Ellie is fiercely independent and capable with a witty sense of humor and she wants more for her ranch. The knowledge of horses, care and training, was interesting and a lovely change of background for a romance. While the two of them figure out their future and if a relationship is possible they start to connect on an emotional level. Since he left the SEALs Max works for Ian Black, the not-so-enemy of the HOT guys in Harris's series. All the books for the Brannigans are standalone, but this could be a spin off for Harris if we get more from Black's men. This book is sweet, sassy and a bit naughty - the perfect mix for a military guy. I was given an advanced copy from the author and have voluntarily written my review.
Max by Lynn Raye Harris is the fifth book in a fun new series (7 Brides for 7 Brothers). The books are all written by different authors and all are contemporary romances about the seven brothers and their seven brides. Each can be read alone, but then again why would you?
Max inherits a horse farm? What was his father thinking? And not even racing horse but horses that have a funny gate. On top of that, the other party Elinor Applegate is not one to let him just sell her family’s legacy. Maybe if he can just hold out, she can get top dollar for her horse Champ and buy the farm from Max. Max is a former Navy SEAL is not one to sit around. He thrives on constant awareness of his environment and actions. He can’t sit on the porch and watch the grass grow.
Max by Lynn Raye Harris was a fun read. Max and Elinor together were fun.
Max (7 Brides for 7 Brothers #5) by Lynn Raye Harris stays true to her military series while also becoming a wonderful story of this 7 Brothers Series. In addition, it reads well as a stand-alone. Not a long book but the story is complete. It was interesting to watch Max and Elie butt heads over what should be done with the far. Which makes this a sort of enemies to lovers story. If not for the Applegate Farm, the couple might have never met let alone been adversaries. A great romance with plenty of sparks and chemistry between Max and Ellie. Number 5 in the series is a hit with me. 4.5 Stars The author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book.
Max is given a legacy of a horse farm in Kentucky and begins to learn more about his mother. His mother loved horses but was so busy caring for 7 young boys that she didn't have much time to ride. When Max arrives at the farm he meets Ellie whose mother was childhood friends with Max's mom Kathleen.
Throughout the series, we find that Colin Brannigan lost his wife and best friend when his wife was killed. He had a very big heart but after he lost his wife, he lost touch with his family. So far, each of the sons has been given a legacy that was special to both parents but also allows each son to learn something about himself.
Max has finally gotten around to seeing what his father left him as part of his inheritance, months later. When he arrives at Applegate farm he finds another world and along with it a gorgeous woman, Ellie🤩
Ellie is surprised when Max shows up out of the blue and announces his intention of selling the farm, she’s worked so hard to make a success😢 But as they get to know each other more, will they be able to make the farm a success together or will Max feel a need to perform his high risk job with Ian Black?
A lovely story with some danger tangled into it and a fantastic ending😍
Max meets a warrior his equal in Ellie and the one to storm his heart. Like his brothers before him he receives a seemingly ill fitting bequest from his father. As he struggles to find the meaning behind his surprise inheritance, he must decide if he's brave enough to fight the biggest battle of his life - true love. Like (most of) the other female leads in this series, Ellie is more than capable and definitely his equal despite her own emotional baggage. They tear up the sheets, unable to deny their chemistry as they circle each other.
Loved this book and feeling the love for the horses coming out of the pages who wouldn't feel the love and commitment to an unusual horse discipline that the author conveys. Ellie is the woman whose love of horses and hopes and dreams for the family farm and home tests upon the achievements of her horse champ Max Brannigan is the man who can cost her her dreams and more than that her heart. Do these two make it work when their chemistry is off the charts read it and find out. A really good story.
Max former Navy SEAL meets his match in Ellie. Max has every intention of selling the horse farm he inherited. Neither Ellie nor the farm is what he expected. At first neither is willing to give up their dreams but then neither is willing to let the other give up their dream. Another Brannigan brother finds true love and changes his mind to be with his soul mate.
Max Brannigan is the family protector. It started with his brothers but being a SEAL made that everyone. He travels to Kentucky to see what his dad left him. He didn't count on meeting the spitfire Ellie. She tells Max what she thinks. She's a hard worker with a kind spirit. She gets Mac's motor running. The more they deny what's happening, the hotter it gets. Another one bites the dust.
Former Navy Seal Max has no idea why his father left him the deed to a horse farm, and one that does not have race horses. Ellie has been in charge of the family's horse farm since the passing of her mother and has been trying to pay off the debt so the farm will not be taken from her. What starts off as a combination of oil and water ends up being a romance that came pout of nowhere. Once again love is found in an unlikely pair.
I counted just a little more than five days lol! I loved the book however and that one of the brothers in this series was SMART enough to figure out that their father loved them and didn’t want to complicate their lives but to enhance it with love and substance!! This is my first time reading a book by this author but I would love to read more by her in the near future!
Iam reading this book in October of 2017. Iam enjoying reading this book lots. I would like to own my horse farm and land and ride horses again. The book brought back memories about college in Hartpury in Gloucestershire and other horse and cowboy books that I have read. I look forward to reading more book by Lynn in the future.
Ian Black? Like, IAN BLACK??? My mind was blown. This story did not disappoint, in fact, I read it in one day. I've enjoyed Ms. Harris' books for a few years. A part of me hoped for a crossover with Kathleen Brooks' Bluegrass series set in Keeneston, KY. Max, Ian and Ahmed? Oh yeah!
I am totally disgusted with this author and Book 5. Up to this book this series was so fantastic. Then you ruined it for your readers. Just because you are creating a tough guy persona does not mean you have to use Gods name in vain. You can curse without bringing God into it. What in wrong with people anymore?
I am just loving this series. All the authors have done an amazing job.
I live Max's story. Sometimes you'll find true love when you're not even looking for it. I've never read a book by Lynn Raye Harris, but I think I'll be looking for more. Great job!
Again, this was another favorite of mine. The series has been a joy to read. It has plenty of action with lots of twists and turns. A good love story with good sex and tender moments. Will be reading the next in the series soon
I enjoy the Military Romance books by Lynn and now she has written a book in this series and did a fantastic job. I love this series and would recommend it to everyone.
This is a new author to me. There was some bad language and a lot of sex, but the storyline was enjoyable. I would have liked to have seen Max learn more about his mother from her former friends in the area. I can’t wait to read the next book.
Good story in the series. Lynn is one of my go to authors, her books never disappoint. She has several great series including Black's Bandits. Highly recommend this and any of her books.
Would be a better book if language was a little less “colorful”. The series tells you how a parent can love all of their children, but show it to each io a different way.
