Alex has only known the life of a young mercenary under the command of a monstrous Captain and is destined for a future of servitude. Little does he know that his life is about to change when he encounters an enigmatic Librarian and his young apprentice. He quickly finds himself on the run from his past and racing into an uncertain future. The world he has been thrust into is full of wonder, and beauty, but it hides a dark secret, and as he comes closer to the truth, evil begins to surround him. His only hope lies with his newfound friends, but will they be enough to survive? Monsters come in many forms and he may soon find that the darkness he left behind is far less dangerous than the darkness that lies ahead.
The focus of the story is on the three companions as they must navigate the dangers of the world for which they are ill-prepared. Even the mighty Shi’ru, supposed protectors of their nation, have hidden secrets and can’t protect them. Three each struggle with their own pasts as they learn to rely on each other and race towards an artifact that could change the shape of the future. Power, however, is not without a cost all its own and the choice to pursue it forces the children to decide what is truly important to each of them.
The book sets up the dynamic between the three of them while simultaneously looking outwards to the larger concepts that shape the world, its history, and its future.
