Four for content, but 2 for the writing quality.

This book (while quite dated now) is the best source I've found for understanding the mysterious world of SEO. I'm sure I'll go back to the book many times to reference specific issues. At times I found their explanations less than clear, though. They could have done a better job of understanding their audience and simplifying concepts even further.

But these guys should have gotten a professional writer for this book. Their writing style is so poor that I put the book down several times out of frustration and came back to it later. The authors seem to think that enthusiasm and wordiness are just as effective clear, concise, focused writing. And their ability to communicate through the written word is poor.

Take these two examples found on facing pages: "...Google cannot place too much dependence on social signals because they [pronoun refers to the previous noun, so social signals] are in control of third party websites." How can social signals be in control of third party websites? Or could "they" refer to Google? But if Google is in control, then those aren't third party websites. I never did figure out the meaning of this sentence.

And then on the facing page: "An authentic FaceBook community ... could result in hundreds of views and actions on your social posts each day, not to mention extending your reach through paid boosts." The sentence is literally saying, "An authentic FaceBook community could result in extending your reach through paid boosts." But I think what they mean is, "...not to mention the impact that could be created by extending your reach through paid boosts." If that's what you mean, then say that.

There are many more examples where I had to stop and reread a sentence multiple times to try to figure out what the authors were trying to say. Next time, guys, hire a professional.

Clear, easy to read, and straightforward. This book is not your technical how-to manual, but instead a very simple guide for someone wanting to understand SEO. Even for people with experience in the field, like myself, this book can be helpful. It goes from defining SEO and understanding how it works, to keyword research, algorithms, content marketing, social signal, reputation, backlinking, and much more. Even though you won't become an SEO expert with this, I would argue this is the only guide you will need if you are a Manager, Entrepreneur or Business Owner wanting to get a little more than the fundamentals.

A great book overviewing SEO and how to integrate it into a business, website, and brand.

The book itself was well-written. It certainly was not poetry, but the writing was clear, concise, and simple. Although I have little background in business, I didn’t find myself running for a dictionary or an online search to understand what he was saying in almost every case. The authors link to a glossary on their website, but I never had to look at it once – everything was pretty clear by context and reading on a little more. It’s not, however, an in-depth, scholarly article. The authors sometimes make big statements which they often provide little evidence for, which is fine. They sell themselves on their authority, rather than on giving detailed evidence and studies for every statement they make. They do provide some studies and real-life examples to illustrate or support a particular point, but most of the time they just run through the information and don’t look back. I didn’t, however, find it overwhelming or too technical. The pace of the book felt right, and there was enough concrete stuff to make all the technical, theoretical stuff to feel light.

The content was also fantastic. The authors run through nearly all of the different facets of a business and how to integrate that with SEO in mind: management, content-creation, sales, web design, social media, hiring, budgeting, plus much more. They do an excellent job of touching on these things without being too bogged down by them or going too in-depth. The nice part about each section, also, is that they provide a lot of resources for people to go to and learn more, if they choose to.

As a relatively new entrepreneur with little background in business and no knowledge of SEO, the book delivered exactly what I was looking for. It’s equipped me with the basic knowledge to move forward with my business plan and website and also more resources to learn more about SEO or particular aspects, should I need it. It’s also filled with a lot of great, practical tips for content creation which will literally save me hundreds of hours over the next few years.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for a general overview of SEO and how to fully integrate it into a website or business. Experts, however, looking for more detailed explanations in a particular field, like, say, a web-designer who wants to know how to build SEO friendly websites, should look elsewhere, although this book might provide a good overview before looking at it from a more narrow perspective.

If you are new to SEO and looking to acquired this essential employment skills, I highly recommend starting with this volume. Having read some Pinterest posts here and there, I was frustrated by not getting results and found this book to be a comprehensive and concise guide to the SEO industry and landscape.

On the website for the book, the author provides a glossary of terms to help navigate the industry jargon. At the end of each chapter, they feature an industry leader to explore. So many people write on SEO I found it helpful to know who the authoritative names are and where to find them (my only critique being that no women were featured and I find it hard to believe there is no pioneer female coder working on SEO).

The books provides every component of SEO from keywords to budgeting for digits marketing. You will absolutely walk away feeling better acquainted with the environment and expectations of marketing, content creation, and website development.

Also the resources offered at the end of each chapter has already let me to free guidebooks and training courses to further my skill development.

Recommend for anyone just getting started.

The first 80 pages are useless and it gave me a strong desire to throw the book in the recycling bin. It was filled with empty sentences like " Seo is important. You cant succeed without SEO. SEO should be your priority" ad nauseum, without actually saying how to do good SEO (think agency freebie whitepaper : "now that you are convinced, hire us!") At some point, it even says that the goal of the book is not to get too technical, there are good books out there for that. Why am I reading this then!?! Anyways, halfway they start giving a few pointers and best practices, which you'll have to research yourself.

This is a very thorough and well-written book about a very complex and confusing topic. The authors use straight-forward language and good examples to help cut through the misinformation and guide the reader to a better understanding of SEO.

As a partner in a 15 year old digital marketing agency, I think the authors have captured the essence of good online marketing. I found myself nodding my head and underlining many parts of the book which make clear where to spend time, what not to do and how to select a marketing partner.

This book is required reading for my staff and highly recommended to my clients who want to learn more about the world of digital marketing.

This book is extremely helpful if you're fairly new to SEO. It covers (as far as I can tell) every main, broad practice necessary to optimize your site and content effectively. This is not a resource for the nuts & bolts of SEO, so you will have to go elsewhere to really learn how to put all of this into practice. Regardless, this is probably a good starting point. It was definitely easier to digest with some other prior knowledge though.

Older information which definitely could do with an update but not a bad primer on SEO. A good way to learn the language, older tactics that may still be used by some SEO companies. This is a good read for small business owners who want to understand the jargon their marketing agency speaks to them about when they present an seo plan.

This is a mini-encyclopedia of SEO. Who to read, which blogs to follow, who are the key players in the field, language explained: an attempt at covering the entire spectrum. Because algorithms keep changing, and the IT field itself is so fluid, I kept wondering if the 2016 publishing date meant the information was way out of date. As an introduction though, this is a good place to start.

SEO simplified

If you ever wonder what SEO is or how it pertains to your business. This is a great book to read. It’s a great start to learn SEO and the importance of it. It’s also a great way to learn the questions to ask when hiring a SEO expert

Probably best for a digital marketing newbie, including CEOs who don't understand why they should invest in ongoing SEO. The first half was fluff to me. Most of the book seemed more focused on content marketing than SEO. Lists lots of references/niche websites that could be handy.

It's a good source of SEO information for beginners and business owners. I like the suggestions of people to follow and resources to use on regular basics. There are not details on how actually to do the SEO work but it's not the purpose of the book anyway.

Lots of good information, made me feel way behind in terms of SEO but it keeps things mostly understandable for the layperson.

I took notes so I guess I found it very useful! Slightly repetitive but that’s a good thing for nonfiction books that are teaching you nee stuff because repetition helps retention 👍🏼
