I'm hovering between 3.5 and 4 stars. I still haven't decided.

I love retellings. Love them. I've read and watched the adaptations of many classics and I'm always interested in trying a new one. Getting a chance to see another perspective. See the characters in a whole new light and in a fresh and unique way.

This particular story is an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. I've read and seen several adaptations of this work but Amity Cross has brought something a little different. It followed the classic's storyline (mostly) with a modern twist. For instance, instead of Rochester falling off a horse, it's a motorcycle. There are also references to Facebook lol.

Jane and Edward meet in much the same way. He's just as dark, mysterious, moody, secretive and passionate as I expected. There are some strange occurrences in Thornfield and while Jane has embarked on an affair with Edward (a hidden one), she's determined to find out what exactly he is hiding.

There were two major drawbacks to this tale, for me anyway. As modern as it was, the author chose to use classic language. I've NEVER liked this. Although English in high school was an easy A, the reading wasn't easy AT ALL. And to be forced to read a modern rendition with old timey language was a bit hard to take. I didn't expect it and I didn't like it. Also, Jane came off as desperate and pathetic, which didn't jive with what I remember from this character. I recall her being strong and independent, almost fierce with her morality and her intelligence. I didn't see that here. She complained and moaned and whined way too much.

That being said, I am interested in reading more. I want to see how much the author will continue to follow the original and how much she will make her own. I shall eagerly await Paradox.

Title: Euphoria
Author: Amity Cross
Category: Romance, Drama
Series or Standalone: Series, Book 1
POV: Heroine's PoV
Plot: 4
Characters: 4
HEA: Not telling

I am a huge Jan Eyre fan. I loved the book and I have watched every single movie that has been made. My particular favorite is the 2011 adaptation with Michael Fassbender so please excuse me if I imagine him as Edward Rochester. Ahem.
That being said, I was so very excited about this book! A reimagining of the classic story? Count me in and boy, did I enjoy it.
This is the story of Jane Doe, a young woman with no future, a woman who has never known her family and who has been scorned by the one person who could protect her; her aunt Reed.
Jane's whole life changes when she gets a job in a grand hotel. Thornfield is a historical mansion that belongs to Edward Rochester, the elusive man who owns the hotel.
The man rarely visits the premises and when he finally does, Jane is in a for a big surprise. Edward is an arrogant but very handsome man who can have any woman he wants. When he turns his attention on plain Jane, both their worlds are turned upside down.
Passion, love, lust, jealousy, secrets and rank prejudices will come between them. Can their physical affair endure against society's cruelty? Can Jane discover what really haunts the corridors of Thornfield and Rochester himself?
I loved the writing, it was very close to Charlotte Bronte's style. The dark, foggy atmosphere really worked. The tale is modernized but my only question is if the author made her characters speak in the old fashioned way on purpose. For me it didn't work pretty well because the settings and era contradicted their way of speech. That is my only complaint. I wouldn't have minded it if the story hadn't beencontemporary.
Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I cannot wait for the next installment. Is it November yet??

When I think about my favorite classic novels, one of the top two on my list includes Jane Eyre. Though many people are more Austen favored, I tend to go towards the Bronte sisters. As soon as I saw that Amity Cross had released a series based loosely on the tale of Jane Eyre, I knew I had to read it, and it was going to be moved near the top of my list. While on holiday leave, I decided to catch up on some series that I had meant to read, and Euphoria was on that list. Euphoria starts with us being introduced to Jane Doe - a young girl whose family were killed in a car crash and she was sent to live with an uncle. Jane never knew her last name and became a Doe - a nobody. Making her way up in the world and being an independent, she gets a job at Thornfield which is a family manor turned hotel. It is her job to help bring in the customers and tourists by coming up with ideas to draw them in. One day Jane is out walking when she is nearly hit by a motorcycle on the country road. The guy despite stunning is quite rude, and Jane is taken aback and keeps her strength biting back with her wit. It turns out that the mysterious guy is Mr. Edward Rochester - owner of Thornfield and her new boss. One thing leads to another as fans of the original Jane Eyre will know as Edward and Jane start a secret relationship beginning with banter and eventually leading to more. Euphoria follows the same storyline in a way as Jane Eyre with the meeting of Mr. Rochester's wealthy friends, her fight for his attraction over the gorgeous and rich women that fawn over Edward to the mysterious noises which at this stage Jane thinks are her overactive imagination or the strange housemaid Grace Poole. Euphoria ends on the cliffhanger of Jane leaving as she has a moment of realization that maybe her life is too different from Edward's and that in this case, the pair of them will never be able to work together and love one another the way ones who in love should.
Fans of Jane Eyre will not want to miss The Thornfield Affair series by Amity Cross, starting with Book #1 Euphoria.

This book has captivated me from start to finish. I stayed up late into the night so I could read another chapter and then I find myself wanting to finish it.. this really was that kinda book for me.

My heart broke for Jane Doe. She has gone through so much heartache though thankfully she's strong and she has survived. Now she finds herself at Thornfield and working for the moody and arrogant Edward Rochester. She certainly gets more than she bargained for with him. Both fight their feelings and emotions but will the heart or their head win through.

I've got to admit I haven't read many classics but after reading this modern version of Jane Eyre my interest has certainly piqued.
I'm so looking forward to reading more of Jane and Edwards story.

“Instead of his hands taking me, he lowered his lips and pulled me into his mouth, his teeth dragging against my skin. The sharp burst of pain was nothing compared to the pleasure that coursed through my body and splintered between my legs, and when his tongue soothed the hurt, the euphoria only rose.”

Euphoria (The Thornfield Affair)
Amity Cross
4.0 stars

Edward Rochester is egotistical. Thornfield Manor and he hold secrets. Its not a place for Jane Doe. Yet she is drawn to the Manor and the dark man who is there. No connection to anyone, she is intrigued by how she craves the secretive man. Feeling like she belongs somewhere for the first time in her life she doesn’t want to feel anything for Edward but she cant help herself. Yet the Manor holds secrets. Who is Grace and what do the haunting nights have to do with her.

This is a classic turned into a modern day romance. The plot is decent and the characters are well written. I am a huge Amity fan but this genre isn’t my first choice. Having said that I can tell you the book will keep you on your toes. In true Amity style there is no lacking in a detailed story or characters. This is exactly the reason I rated it 4 stars. I cannot say the book is not worth reading and I cannot say its not a great story. Its just not my genre. However I do know excellent writing and this is just that.

Mystery and suspense line the pages of the first release. This is a three release series. Click it up if you like a modern spin on a classic read. Beautiful cover depicting the exact setting and temperament of Edward.

A little disappointed

Having read the original story by Bronte this modern version of the well known story felt kind of disappointment.

One would expect fresh approach to this tale, unfortunately that is not the case. There is nothing original in the way the plot, characters or their relationship are developed. The dialogues and language do not fit with 21 century heroes. It feels as if they were directly moved from the original story to this one.
Knowing the storyline and after having read the first book from the series I have no interest really to follow through.

It's a shame as it could be a wonderful modern edition of this classic story. 3 stars just because I loved the original book

Well what can I say. I hated the ending. But I loved some of the quotes taken direct from the original Jane Eyre book. Mostly said by mr.Rochester. Still being said in this book the words became unhinged. It appears there is no mrs. Rochester, just a very disturbed mr. Unfortunately the whole affair turns into something I can’t understand, or let me rephrase it: I don’t want to understand or invest time in. So long mr. Rochester, you’re not him.

I wasn't a fan of the writing style here. There was a lot of telling rather than showing, especially in the first chapter, which made it feel very plodding and didn't engage me. Despite an interesting premise, this was a DNF for me.

Euphoria is the story where female meets male, lust prevails, female feels like she isn't worthy of him due to his social status. I felt like it was your typical story, one that's been done many times before. However, Amity Cross had a way of making this one different.

Edward Rochester is a respectable figure in the business world, the owner of Thornfied (an estate turned hotel/retreat), but he is dark, complicated and has many secrets of his own. Then enters Jane Doe (yes, that's her name) who is basically a nobody with zero family or friends, but her feistiness attracts Edward. This attraction leads them into a lustful adventure.

This book takes place in modern times, but is written in classic English Jane-Austen style. While this may appeal to some, at times it threw me off. It made it harder for me to get into the story. I do like the character of Jane. She is very strong, smart, and determined, which are characters that I am drawn to (as most people are) in a book.

Overall, I give the book 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

I received an ARC for an honest review - 3.5 stars for me.

I haven't read anything from Amity before; this was a good introduction to her writing style. I was intrigued by the blurb and the story didn't disappoint. Jane is a feisty, intelligent young woman who accepts a new position at Thornfield hotel; a place that holds dark secrets of its own... This is where she quite literally walks into the dark, mysterious and cold Lord of the Manor Edward Rochester. A secret affair ensues between the two of them; their chemistry is matched only by their fiery tempers and strong wills... but will the Thornfield hotel with all it's secrets tear them apart!

Jane Doe has not had an easy go since her parents died when she was an infant. Left "nameless" by her family and unwanted she spent many years in a reform school and learned to be a "yes" girl. She is hired by Thornfield Hotel and hopes that she has finally found a place where she can belong.

Mr. Edward Rochester is the reluctant owner of Thornfield Hotel that has been is his family for years. He is a distant owner and moody and arrogant and manages to push all of Jane's buttons.

Yet beneath it all a strong attraction is between Jane and Edward and soon they find themselves in a love affair that they hide from all those around them. But Edward is keeping to himself and is holding himself back from Jane and isn't about to let her in. Will Jane manage to break down Edward's walls or is she destined to be alone again?

I found this story intriguing as I'm still not 100% sure where it is headed. My brain is coming up with many ideas and I can't wait to see if I am right.

Jane is such an amazing character as she has built herself up from nothing into a super smart woman who lacks so much self confidence. She believes she finally may have a friend in co-worker Alice but is still not sure of where Alice's alliances are. The hotel has so much mystery in it and I'm looking forward to learning more about it.

Edward is a broody mystery. There are so many questions I still have about him as he is confident yet at the same time I think he is lacking a true "base" where he feels loved and is happy. There's a reason why he believes he doesn't deserve to have happiness and we are yet to discover why.

It's also interesting how Edward surrounds himself with people like Blanche Ingram who believe they are so much better than all others. I'm looking forward to seeing if there is a change coming regarding how Edward and Blanche interact.

The book left off in a little bit of a cliff-hanger and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.

"One kiss and I was a slave."

And swoon...Jane Doe falls hard and fast for her enigmatic boss, shrouded in secrets and half truths her whimsical longing to be loved and wanted enables her to get caught up in a torrid love affair. A survivor of a family tragedy Jane has been stripped of her identity, her family and has embraced her burden of being one of the unwanted. Free from the tethers of society's expectations she is nomad and is in search of something that evades her. Desperate to put down roots her journey leads her to Thornfield and all its mysterious ways. The story is seeped with the dark edge of the forbidden, whilst the plot hints that there is so much more to be revealed. I was engrossed by the haunting prose and the blend of classical language and modern day terminology. Edward is a brooding anti hero who for all intents and purposes is the villain thus far, seeming to cause our heroine more harm than good. Taking her fragile heart and playing with her affection without remorse. The other staff members are as immersed in the secretive yet seductive plot of Thornfield and I am intrigued by the part they play. Jane herself is a contradiction, strong and determined yet easily broken by the man who hides behind his mask of anger. I was pleasantly surprised by this totally different story from Amity Cross, I am an avid fan and am pleased I was steadfast in loyalty to her writing as this was a breath of fresh air. I have so many questions and so many is it this? that? or that?...I need the next book to find out if my thoughts are correct! I totally while heatedly recommend this story as it was eerily gripping and I can't wait to see what happens next.

A five star not what I was expecting read.

Euphoria -The Thornfield affair – book 1 by Amity Cross
Have you ever been so enthralled by a book that when the first book concludes, you want to scream at the author to hurry up, you need book 2? THIS IS THAT BOOK!! First of all the writing is wonderful and so proper. You feel as though you are in time warp and yet this is a mix of modern day fairy tale and historical romance. Jane Doe was orphaned as a baby and for so long she has lived her life feeling no connection to others. When she takes employment at The Thornfield Manor, she finally feels like she belongs. When she meets her boss Edward Rochester, she has mixed feelings for him. He is arrogant, moody and mysterious and yet he calls to her like no other. And so an illicit affair begins. The halls of Thornfield are haunted late at night, with strange beguiling noises. Curiosity will keep you on the edge of your seat. Will Jane ever find out what this is all about and who is Grace? Who is Mason and is Edward involved is something dark? Does Alice know more than she is telling? This book was brilliantly spellbinding, it will keep you so engrossed. The plot is gripping, mysterious with many twists and turns. The characters are perplexed but so captivating. I was totally hypnotized by this book and cannot wait for book 2. Even as a sit here and write my review my mind is wondering in which direction this author will take us next. Be warned this is part of a series; however I would highly recommend this book.

In this modern re-imaging of Jane Eyre, Jane Doe, a lonely woman who was orphaned as an infant, arrives at Thornfield to assist in the rejuvenation of the hotel. There she meets the enigmatic Edward Rochester, a businessman and owner of the hotel who has a dark, secretive past. The two have an immediate attraction, but class differences, secrets, and mysterious occurrences might get in the way of their forming a relationship.

“’I have seen the soul that lingers behind your eyes, and I want to possess it.’”

I love Jane Eyre, so I was really looking forward to reading this one. I found it to be an enjoyable book, but for me, it did have one big problem. The dialogue is written in the style of the original Jane Eyre, making it seem like the book is set in historical times. This becomes really jarring when a character suddenly starts talking about Facebook or Google, and you’re reminded of the modern setting. Aside from the dialogue, I did think that Amity’s writing style was beautifully descriptive. Edward was my favorite part of the book, but the story is told from the first-person perspective of Jane, so I really didn't get to see as much of him as I would have liked, and he ended up remaining a mystery. I enjoyed Jane and Edwards interactions with each other when the two were together--their chemistry is off the charts. The book leaves you with plenty of unanswered questions, so be prepared to read all three books of the series. Ultimately, I thought it was a pretty good retelling and am looking forward to the next installment.

Euphoria grabbed me from page one and held me captive as the story unfolded. I read captivated by the story of Jane Doe and Mr. Rochester, full of questions and theories that only grew with each page I turned. The push and the pull between these two as they fight feelings was wrought with tension.
Jane Doe had been through a lot in her life, starting from a very young age, but she came out of such suffering with an unknown strength and a desire to suceed at something in her life. She seems quiet and meek, but that's not all there is to Jane at all, she's a deeper person with much stirring in her mind.
Edward Rochester was a little harder to figure out for me, I didn't know what to make of the gruff man who seemed to flip on a dime. But the more I read, the more I could see how torn he was and that there were layers I hadn't yet seen unforlded.
Euphoria is a modern take on the classic Jane Eyre and I was very curious to see how Amity Cross would handle the task, needless to say I wasn't disappointed. The setting and the characters all built off each other adding suspense as needed and keeping me questioning. The story itself sucked me in and I was powerless to stop it as I read the whole thing in one sitting. This book left me wondering what more there was with Thornfield, what other secrets there were and more information on the cast of characters. I look forward to the next book in the Thornfield Affair series.

Euphoria by Amity Cross is the first book in her three part series The Thornfield Affair, a modern day re-imagining of the story of Jane Eyre. I was enchanted and addicted to Jane Doe and Edward Rochester's latest story.

Jane and Mr. Rochester told in a modern setting is something I was intrigued by completely. When it came time to dive into the story I was filled with anticipation which may be the reason it seemed to move slowly for me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed and devoured every word but the pace was slow & steady. Jane was tough and this version seemed more likable to me than the past versions I have seen portrayed on screen in a classical setting. We all know the story so I won't spoil everything by revealing the modernization but I enjoyed every word, every letter and am on tenterhooks for the next book.

This book was great Amity knows how to write a book that will keep you turning pages till you find out what happens this one is no different.

This book it sucked me in from the start, it was different but so good.

A girl with no one was Orphaned as an infant, she ends up being called Jane Doe and she is such a great person, she has had a shitty past where no one really ever cared for her. I loved her character.

So good to read a book female isn’t weak girl who's frightened of her own shadow.

Then she takes a Job in Thornfield, it is an English manor turned hotel.

She meets her Boss Edward Rochester he is arrogant, Moody, and very Mysterious. Jane starts to fall for him.

But Edward has dark secrets that he will not share with Jane. What are they will they tear them apart?

Does Thornfield hold something Dark and Twisted that is lurking within it walls that Haunts Edward. Jane is determined to find out. Before anyone else gets hurt.

I loving the mystery to this book, and it has me thinking what happening what secrets are going to come out.

Hopefully we will find out what’s going on in Thornfield the screams and the whispers that Jane hears.

I have so many questions. I can’t wait for book 2 in this series.

Euphoria: The Thornfield Affair #1 is a modern day take on Charlotte Bronte’s classic, Jane Eyre. I don’t mind retellings of classics, in fact I’m usually intrigued to see an author give them a new spin. This particular one left me with mixed feelings.
I loved the mood of this book. The setting was foggy, closed off from most of the town and just secluded. I could picture it perfectly in my mind and it was fabulous. The perfect place for our Jane Doe, the heroine, who was orphaned as an infant and then abandoned by the family that could have taken her in. Edward was dark and broody and mysterious, definitely a secretive hero that I longed to help fix and the setting of this book definitely fit him.
The characters were well developed here. I will admit to finding Jane slightly annoying at times-I just felt she was a little childish. The push-pull between these two definitely worked in this story.
What I didn’t love about this book was that while there were mentions of modern things-Google, apple etc the language was very classic and formal. It didn’t quite fit with the modern spin on this tale and sometimes got in the way of the story. I was intrigued enough by book one to definitely read book two.
