Penelope Murphy is a naïve, 19-year-old American missionary with a domineering fiancé who thinks her big ideas about volunteering in Africa are just plain stupid. But she’s determined: for six months, she’ll work on a community garden in a rural village in Malawi.
Everything is going to plan until she meets Viktor, a dangerous bad boy with a checkered past who completely destroys her ideas of right and wrong.
In a strange new country, Penelope is soon in over her head. Despite the locals warning her about this lone wolf who lives in a mysterious cabin in the woods he built with his bare hands, Penelope can’t resist. She’s soon drawn to the dark, new world he opens up for her, one sexy step at a time…
Once Penelope’s good girl mask starts slipping ...she finds doesn’t want to put it back on. Viktor and Penny are both running away from something – but can they ever escape one another?
I don't know how I feel about rating this book. I am all over the place on this. I think I'm settling for a 2.5 because...while the premise was fucking fantastic...it just didn't deliver.
5 stars for originality 4 stars for atmosphere 3 stars for the writing 2 stars for plot execution 0 stars for the grovel 0 stars for the ending 0 stars for the religious bent
The H is 1/2 Russian and 1/2 Malawi. His mother abandoned him to his father and returned to Russia when he was young because she was embarrassed by having a mixed race child. The H lives in the jungle in a hand built cabin, he is also a massive manwhore and only fucks the missionary girls...and they're not doing it missionary ;) OW are not a problem with me when there's a point, so his past didn't bother me nor did the OW scene before the h showed up. THEN...the end...where we find out he was fucking another missionary the entire time he was with the h. She finds out from HER after the h discovers she's pregnant by the H. I really liked him up to this point. He was an interesting, fucked up hermit with just enough personality I could feel his character. The OW was a completely unnecessary plot device. The H/h appeared for all intents and purposes to be exclusive during their time together and I found his betrayal bitter. To the point I wished the h had left Malawi after he left her there pregnant and didn't return for 4 years...yeah, you read that shit right.
The h...at times I hated her, then she'd surprise me and I found her intriguing and incredibly strong and mature. But, in the end, I found her to be a doormat...so much for her strength in turning away her racist, misogynistic asshole of a fiancé. She was angry the H cheated on her but never really forced him to grovel. Before he leaves, she demands he admit he was wrong in sleeping with both women but he doesn't. The entire relationship between the H/OW is never explained enough for the reader to understand how he even met with her or when while he was with the h. I thought they were inseparable yet he also managed to keep having sex with the OW? It just never made sense. And again, it was unnecessary. He could have just run from the h for all the reasons he claimed without the OW drama and I probably wouldn't have minded as much. The OW was just pointless and destructive to the plot. The H cheated on her during their entire relationship, it is never handled between the H/h...they just fuck every time it comes up :/
Other triggers: Drug use and cultivation. The only thing I found weird was the whole Christian missionary thing. It almost mocked Christians while coming off as just describing the naïveté of the h. I was raised in a traditional Tibetan Buddhist household so this kinda thing doesn't offend me, but I have a feeling devout Christians might be offended by their portrayal in this book.
Writing flow was ok, but there were grammar and structure mistakes that kept skipping me right out of the story. Either a better editor, or a few more books under her belt and I would probably really like this author.
Penelope wants to do good, she doesn’t know exactly what she is supposed to do but she believes she is following God’s will and travels to build a community garden on the other side of the world. When she arrives it’s not quite like she imagined. She meets Vik. His mother White Russian and his father Black. His mum left when he was a boy and growing up he struggles, not white enough for his mum, but not black enough for the village. His dad cares for him but passes away and Vik seems a bit lost, he doesn’t seem to care about anything, walks to the beat of his own drum.
He is attracted to her but thinks her ideas are idealistic, can he toughen her up a bit and can she soften him?
This book was not for me I’m afraid. I found the lead characters both annoying. She was awful throughout, one minute sweet and the next narcissistic. He was an arse, seemed to get better and then WTAF?! Straight into douche lord territory. Just no I’m afraid
This was actually a really good book. Vick and Penny are not what you would call a match made in heaven but they make since in a way. Definitely a must read.
Could only read up to 7 percent. Setting was not well researched. Religion and culture was not well researched and seemed vague on details including christianity. The "erotic" scenes were too far fetched and to be honest I felt turned off. I felt like a teenager who has no experience in sex wrote this. Just unbelievable and boring. The main character, penny, had no qualities that were attractive, comparable, or personality. The first few chapters reminded me of creative writing class in eighth grade. There was no substance.
Another great book by a fabulous author!! This was one unlike any I had read before. I loved the whole thing! Not a big fan of the Four year gap but that was no biggie. And why happened to Valerie?
