I am really surprised that this manga is not more popular. In a way, I can liken it to Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun– in a good way, of course! You have a supernatural boy who really sticks out of place and a female heroine that, at first, isn’t sure about working with him. I really like how Hinome’s character arc develops in just first volume, and how she isn’t just a tsundere. Her urge to just have a true friend really is a nice touch, just like bickering with Im at the end, when they really start working together.
Biggest complain I have is that.. the pacing of battles seems to be too fast; and, subsequently, sometimes I don’t know what’s happening before the battle is apparently over. Other than that, I am def going to read the rest of volumes- they should make anime adaptation, srs.

Eh, it’s hard to feel excited about this series because parts of it seem derivative of other supernatural shonen manga. I’ll see if I fare better with the next few volumes.

In the first place, I decided to try this series when yenpress twittered about its release. The cover looked interesting with the boy in an egyptian inspired outfit and I like the focus (at least for now it looks so) on gods and humans. I wouldn't have minded, if the entire story was set in ancient egypt.
So, in volume 1 we get a boy who's the more or less well-known Imhotep, a high priest with a great ability and on an important mission: to track and eliminate magai which are false gods. As said, I like this part of the story very much with all those ancient gods, especially if one has knowledge of those past eras. I just hope, this story won't develop into a never-ending find-and-kill-magai-story because this would be boring after some time. I expect more of a good plot...
Imhotep (short: Im) was an interesting protagonist from his first appearance up till the end of the volume. It's good to have gotten to know a bit of his past which might be more "tragic" than one would assume. To be honest, I hope it'll really get heart-aching! Jun Mochizuki (mangaka of Pandora Hearts and The Case Study of Vanitas, check them out if you don't know them yet!) made me a sadist and masochist, I want to suffer with the characters, sorry..., can't help it.
At the end, another character dressed quite alike Im appears and we learn about that priesthood... It's kind of strange that this guy calls Im a heretic, and it just intensifies the urge to know more about Im! What did he do? He was a great priest but got kind of sealed away to be awaken whenever there's need? That's inhuman! And why is he called an "evildoer" and heretic? There's so much I yearn to know! To put it short, this was a brilliant first volume (one of the best I've read this year) and I can't await volume 2!

Makoto Morishita's addition to the battle shonen genre manages to hold its own place, however, struggles in the same areas as most Shonens do.
The story follows Im, a priest from Egypt who is resurrected into the modern world with the sole task of hunting down the false gods - Makai. He also encounters the other cast members along the way, all of which have their own agenda in the story.
The main issue with Im is how dated it feels. While the Egyptian theme gives for an interesting dynamic, it definitely feels as more of a gimmick to add some variety to the plot. Ancient Egypt memorabilia and designs based on lore are all there, however, the setting is a fairly plain, modern Japan. Nowadays, battle Shonen titles have become so imaginative, they mix genres, create new worlds, and showcase exciting and original characters. Unfortunately, Im feels like a Shonen title from the early 2000s, when stories were carried by wacky humor, big casts, and cool fights. nothing more, nothing less.
This is not to say that Im is a boring title. Our main character's backstory is intriguing, and while the cast is mostly very formulaic and basic, Morishita does manage to make them at least likeable.
The art itself is great. There's a heavy emphasis on the Egyptian side of the designs, which is very eye-catching. Overall, the panels have a nice clean finish to them.
Im's first volume isn't great, but it's also not very different from some highly respected Shonen titles in the past. Beginnings are hard to pull off, but they're still a vital part of a story.

Depuis qu’elle est toute petite, Hinome n’a aucun ami. À l’école, on la dit maudite… Et pour cause : chaque son qui sort de sa bouche se transforme en flamme mortelle ! Alors qu’elle rentre comme d’habitude chez elle sans avoir parlé à qui que ce soit de la journée, elle tombe sur un étrange garçon en pleine cavale dans les rues de Tokyo. Elle lui propose de l’héberger, avant de découvrir qu’elle a devant elle rien de moins qu’Imhotep, le plus grand prêtre-sorcier de l’Égypte ancienne ! Malgré ses airs d’adolescent, il cache d’immenses pouvoirs… si grands qu’il s’est attiré la colère des dieux. Considéré comme le pire criminel de tous les temps, il a été condamné à un sommeil artificiel…
Mais 3 000 ans plus tard, le monde est de nouveau menacé par les Magai, des démons maléfiques, et les geôliers d’Im n’ont d’autre solution que de faire appel à lui pour régler le problème. Réunis par le destin, Im et la jeune fille se lancent dans un combat sans pitié, avec pour le mage une chance de trouver la rédemption au bout du chemin…

Honnêtement, j'ai chéri ce manga. C'est une série terminée en 11 tomes et j'ai chéri et adoré chacun de ces tomes, sans exception !
Au travers des planches, j'ai été transportée dans les aventures d'Im, Hinome et tous leurs alliés qu'ils rencontreront plus tard. J'ai beaucoup apprécié voyager autant au Japon qu'en Égypte, dans le passé et dans le présent.
Le travail artistique est absolument magnifique. Il y a un détail fou dans l'expression des personnages et dans les différents lieux présentés. Concernant l'histoire, je suis impressionné par l'histoire que la mangaka a créé autour de la mythologie égyptienne ! C'est beau, c'est épique, c'est historique et moderne en même temps.

Les personnages sont vraiment attachants. Je les ai tous plus ou moins appréciés, même les personnages secondaires. L'apparition de tous a nuancé l'ambiance du manga et chacun avait leur apport pour l'histoire.
Ensuite, si j'ai eu de la difficulté à supporter certaines des réactions d'Hinome, j'ai particulièrement été touchée par la relation entre Im et Djéser.
Entre combat de tirants, magie et mystère, la mangaka va aborder avec sensibilité le thème de l'amitié, de l'espoir, du deuil, de la culpabilité, du pardon... Tout un cocktail qui m'a émue pendant ma lecture.

Cela dit, cette lecture n'est pas parfaite à cause de la présence de certains clichés au niveau relationnel, de la miéverie bien trop présente entre nos 2 protagonistes (bah oui, il faut bien une petite touche de romance...) et du final que j'ai trouvé un peu trop rapide. Selon moi, il manquait de petits détails, de logique pour clore cette série.
Mais, en somme, j'ai vraiment adoré ce manga !

It's been a while since I read manga, I don't think I ever reviewed one either.
So the art is adorable, sadly nothing is as detailed as the covers tho. The proportions and perspectives are all on point, the expressions are clear, the designs are serviceable- Hinome and Im are good, but Anubis' doesn't lend itself to a lot of expressions and while the gods are pretty awesome looking the magai don't feel very different.
The story is a classic- mysterious dude is hunting evil things, helps a girl who becomes his friend and they live through adventures while exploring the hero's dark past. It's not a bad plot, I like it, but you have to bring new stuff to the table. I didn't think the Magai were that great or made much sense- why are there so many in Japan, barely managing to possess little girls? Like this works in Blue Exorcists because demons are everywhere and they're more like species of animals than unique beings, except for the kings like Samael and Amaimon. But here each Magai is unique and its own fake god. It kind of hurts their credibility and power when they just hang out in abandoned buildings and are content possessing little girls for almost a decade without killing anyone or trying to possess someone else.
The characters were enjoyable, I like Im, and Hinome is alright- she doesn't have much differentiating her from other leads in these stories. I think I preferred her when she was mute, it added something to her character. Anubis is there, I guess? I'm as disinterested with these "boobs!" characters as ever, just realize that Sanji is the best version of this dude and move on.
So this is a fun thing to read whenever, I don't regret buying it one bit if only for the art.

Réalisé par Makoto Morishita, Im est une série en 11 tomes, entièrement sortie en France, autour de l’univers des dieux antiques Egyptiens. Au premier abords, l’intrigue semble assez sombre, mais l’auteur ajoute suffisamment d’humour dans ce premier tome pour alléger tout ça. Bien sûr, Im n’est pas le seul personnage principal de l’histoire, même si on peut dire que sans lui, l’histoire n’irait pas bien loin… On suit également Hinome, une humaine tout à fait banale, si ce n’est qu’elle est possédée par un Magai, se faisant lorsqu’elle parle, elle crache du feu… Elle est donc, pour ainsi dire, devenue muette et ce tient très en retrait par peur de blesser les autres. On peut donc dire que l’on suit l’aventure de deux personnages en parallèles et dont les destins sont sûrement étroitement liés.
La relation entre les deux protagonistes principaux est très drôle, c’est un peu une relation chien/chat, mais malgré tout, on sent que les deux s’apprécie mutuellement. Chaque personnage à son caractère, comme toujours me diriez-vous ? Mais on peut dire que celui du père d’Hinome est vraiment décalé, de quoi donner de bon moment de rigolade au cours de la lecture. En tout cas, un nouveau personnage apparaît en fin de tome et il fait monter la tension d’un bon cran !

I'm not blown away yet by this paranormal detective-ish adventure, but I'm interested enough to continue with it. A powerful ancient Egyptian priest with a dark secret past (Imhotep) somehow appears in modern-day Japan, where he gets to work hunting Magai - dangerous spirits that can possess or curse people and wreak havoc. He bumps into the heroine, a teenager cursed so she can't speak without spitting flames; by not speaking for years (thus protecting everyone from herself), she has become an outsider with a bad reputation amongst her peers. Soon enough the priest reveals that she is cursed by a Magai, and that's where their rocky partnership begins, with him hunting Magai and her stuck being his guide to the modern world. As early as the first volume, we get tantalizing hints of Im's dark past, which is keeping me interested. The obligatory cute sidekick/slapstick comic relief, a fledgeling Anubis determined to keep an eye on Im in hopes of earning full godhood, is annoying chibi-style compared to everyone else (and it took awhile to figure out whether that facial structure was his mouth or his snout), but at least he serves to help with a touch of character development.
A decent paranormal adventure manga with nice art and characters that show promise of not being cardboard.

Ich habe zwar etwas gebraucht, um in den Manga reinzukommen, aber dann war ich einfach nur begeistert. Der Humor liegt mir total und als dann auch noch der kleine Anubis dazukam, war ich verloren.
Es geht hier um den wiedererweckten Imhotep, der aus welchen Gründen auch immer, als Junge auf die Erde zurückkehrt, um falsche Götter zu jagen, die Menschen in Besitz nehmen. Er trifft an seinem ersten Tag auf die Schülerin Hinome und befreit sie von einem Geist. Fortan lebt er bei ihr und ihrem geschichtsverrücktem Vater. Hinome ist alles andere als begeistert davon und hier kommt dann der Humor ins Spiel. Der liegt mir total und ich musste so oft schmunzeln und habe mir Szenen doppelt und dreifach angesehen, weil ich sie so witzig fand. Hier wird ganz viel Humor über Mimik und Gestik herübergebracht. Allgemein liebe ich den Zeichenstil. Die Figuren sind süß und witzig, die Handlung und die Orte sind abwechslungsreich und mir gefällt die Abwechslung der Panels.
Das war wirklich ein großartiger Auftakt und ich muss mir dringend die nächsten Teile zulegen.

J'adore et j'ai hâte de continuer

Ceci est une relecture mais j’ai tout autant aimé ce manga. Tout d’abord, les dessins sont très jolis, surtout lors des scènes avec les Magai et les dieux.
Nous suivons donc Imhotep, qui revient à la vie dans un japon moderne. On ne s’est pas exactement ce qu’il s’est passé mais toujours est-il qu’il va aider et s’installer chez Hinome, une jeune lycéenne presque ordinaire. Beaucoup de choses se passe dans ce tome mais on ne se perd pas je trouve. J’apprécie la rapidité et le dynamisme du récit. De plus, notre duo est très drôle, surtout lorsqu’il est rejoint par un petit Anubis. J’adore nos personnages et j’ai hâte de suivre leurs aventures. En plus, je suis fan de l’aspect Egypte/Mythologie.
Je recommande aux personnes qui aiment bien les manga d’actions.

this story is nice. It's not mind blowing with anything, many of the characters have personalities you've seen at least a bit of before, but that's okay. I really enjoyed this. It's done well and really feels like a cozy story. The characters are fun and it can be emotional when it needs to be. Also the fights can be really fun to read. The story may seem more actions but really it's about the characters and their relationships. The plot is important too, for sure, and it's good, but it's not the biggest aspect.
the only warning I would give is this: I have yet to finish the story, however I have heard a lot, like a LOT, of people saying that the ending was disappointing. So if you stories with bad endings get to you, then probably this is not the book for you, but if you can handle that then this story really is a gem worth a lot more recognition than it gets.

This series is so much fun! I am always down for a manga series that deals with mythology outside of Japanese or Chinese (Egyptian in this case) and I love the characters. Im is such a delight-equal parts serious, mischievous, and caring. Anubis is too stinking adorable, and Himone is a great female lead. The artwork is pretty standard, but I do like it a lot and the action scenes look great. Only four stars because it isn't trying anything new or pushing any boundaries, but this is a fun series that I highly recommend checking out.

สนุกกกกกก ตอนแรกเห็นลายเส้นเหมือน เมไจเลย แต่พอเข้าไปอ่านก็ไม่เหมือนซะทีเดียว การดำเนินเรื่องมีเล่าถึงอียิปต์โบราณด้วย คนที่ชอบประวัติศาสตร์จะติดหนึบ พออ่านจบก็อยากหาความรู้เพิ่มเติมทันที

J'ai beaucoup aimé la thématique de l'Egypte et l'intrigue. Par contre, je trouve ça dommage que le mangaka ait sexualisé à plusieurs reprises Hinome, une jeune ado de 15 ans. Je sais que cela est très présent dans les shonen manga mais c'est assez malsain et inutile, selon moi.
Ce premier tome de Im reste quand même une lecture agréable.

Empieza bastante bien. Im, el sumo sacerdote, ha llegado a Japón tras 3000 años encerrado en una tumba para liberar al mundo de los Magai. Pero nada más llegar se cruza con Hinome, una chica que ha recibido una maldición y no puede hablar sin echar fuego por la boca. ¿Podrá Imhotep ayudarla? ¿O será ella quien acabe ayudándole a él?

Un début de serie tres prometteur meme si on reste tout de meme dans les codes du shonen.
Les personnages sont attachant et l'histoire est pleine d'humour. Les references aux divinites de l'Egypte ancienne apportent une note interressante et originale a ce manga.

La verdad que yo me esperaba otra cosa de este manga pero Imhotep es super gracioso y parece en un niño, la mayoría de las veces pero cuando hace falta se pone serio y además el dibujo es muy bonito y eso es un plus añadido. Tengo muchas ganas de seguir leyendo este manga

I really enjoyed it; the art is great, very likeable characters. I love mythology so I was really excited and it didn't let me down. Will definitely read the next one. Great choice for the Excelsior award.

Cute art! Reminded me of both “Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun” and “Sachi's Monstrous Appetite”. Straight-forward and refreshing, easy read. I like how Im often quaked in fear and/or bewilderment. Nice touch.

J'avais été tentée par le dessin et le sujet mais je n'ai pas été sufisamment convaincue par l'histoire pour aller plus loin que le tome 1.

A fun first to the series. Reminds me of Jujutsu Kaisen, curses running around possessing people. Been a while since I’ve seen anything on Egyptian myth, so I enjoyed this.

I love this manga very much- it's have very good plot and creation of heros. I love this sense of humor. It's the best book witch old Egypt elements (In my opinion).
