The royal selection begins!
We meet a lot of new people thanks to the prophecy that says it must have 5 candidates for the royal succession of the Kingdom of Lugunica. Only one will be chosen at the end from the Holy Dragon Volcanica to renew the covenant. It's actually really amazing to see all the candidates (+ their ‘vassel’ knights). This whole volume is about introducing all these new characters and starting the ceremony of the royal selection.
As the chapters go on the discussions become more heated leading me to actually feel second-hand embarrassment from the humiliation of a character. This went on for way longer than needed, which also made it uncomfortable to watch and now also to read. At the very end I was both satisfied with Emilia's decision but also felt a tad sad about it. I understand where she was coming from and I would probably have made the same decision, but it's one that is a bit hard to actually execute given the circumstances.
This volume covers themes such as (overcoming) prejudice and the critique of societal injustices and power dynamics through social hierarchy.

This volume comprises some events and elements that made me bail from the anime adaptation of this series a few years ago, so I knew in advance it wouldn't be my favorite. However, the format allowed breathing room for some scenes that in the adaptation didn't shed enough light on the characters' motivations.
As usual we follow the misadventures of Natsuki Subaru, a guy mysteriously snatched from Earth to a fantasy world, where he expected to receive protagonist status. However, he ended up finding out he's more powerless than virtually anyone there, except for his sole special ability: that of returning to a previous point in his fantasy world life whenever he dies. That doesn't save him, however, from enduring the pain and torture of dying, nor the scars in his mental stability and his resolve, which become prominent plot points as the story goes on. Until this volume, the protagonist had had to deal with dying horribly in order to stop disasters from happening and save the people he came to appreciate, but now his shortcomings as a human being, beyond his abilities, cause grief and shame in those he loves, to the extent that he's left behind.
The gang was chilling at the mansion when they receive a summons for some fantasy world politics thing: the main heroine is a candidate for the throne along with other gals, and she needs to attend some meeting at the capital. The mostly powerless protagonist sees himself being pushed to the sidelines, forbidden from attending important conversations, and even treated like a bratty child by the woman he loves. He pushes to be allowed to travel to the capital with his lord and the main heroine. She wants to keep him in the mansion because she fears he'll overextert himself and end up dying, which he will over and over to an extent that she's unaware of. But the lord of the mansion, a Littlefinger-like schemer, intends to use the protagonist for his theatrics, so he allows him to accompany them to the capital. There, they forbid him from attending the royal meeting at the castle. The main heroine addresses him like she would a child, making him promise that he'll stay put and not cause all kinds of trouble for her. He promises, but, like the unruly, stubborn bastard that he is, he immediately breaks that promise and spends the first half of the novel attempting to figure out how to sneak into the castle.
At one point he saw that some hoodlums were accosting a high-maintenance looking gal in an alley. The protagonist, driven to put his life on the line for women he doesn't know, butts in and becomes a thing in that woman's mind. Unfortunately, she's one of the other candidates for the throne: a volatile psychopath who had already usurped the domain of her husband, whom she likely killed, and due to her boundless sense of entitlement, her explicitly stated belief that everything in the world happens for her benefit, she tangles the protagonist, whom she constantly insults, to come along with her and her bodyguard to the royal summons. As she also had learned that the protagonist was part of the main heroine's retinue, she takes it as an opportunity to smear the heroine's face with the notion that anyone in her vicinity could be whisked away if this other candidate wanted to. She also refers to the heroine as an imbecile, due to the heroine's generally shy, good-natured demeanour. For a series with prominently enjoyable banter between the many different characters, this character was excruciating. Every other character needs to walk on eggshells to avoid triggering her murderous intents. Unfortunately she also has supernatural powers including likely some luck-based blessing (it's a magical world after all) that has allowed her to believe that the universe moves for her benefit.

Her bodyguard, memorable in the anime adaptation itself for his odd attire and friendly demeanour, was originally more significant in a way that clashes with the general concept of the story. The guy lacks an arm and always wears a helmet to hide the terrible scars and burns on his face, but more prominently he opens up about also having originated in another world, possibly Earth as well. I thought it was a confusion in the beginning, that the guy meant coming from another distant country or whatever, but apparently there actually is another character that has spent around twenty years making his way in this fantasy world. It diminishes the uniqueness and importance of the protagonist even more than the rest of the events of this volume do.
In any case, the rest of the novel focuses mostly on fantasy world politics. The candidates and their knights give their reasons why they should be chosen, and there's some interesting stuff there even though it involves dragons. Regarding the heroine, who happens to have been born a white-haired half-elf, same as the worst villain in the history of that world, she's referred by the current rulers as a half-devil that shouldn't in any way be given any power in the realm. Her lord organizes some theatrics to show her good nature and power. He pretends that he's just using her candidacy as a way to speed up forming a new government after the death of the previous rulers. The protagonist interjects at the disrespect thrown towards his waifu. The lord, previously quite a chill guy, flings a fireball at the protagonist for his insolence, but the heroine gets in the way and defuses the attack. It was part of the theatrics to reveal that the heroine is allied with an ancient spirit that is part of some known group of very powerful spirits that can bring forth the Apocalypse or some shit. In any case, the current rulers respect that this woman could take the throne by force but won't, and just wants to be considered fairly.
Later on, seeing that the heroine is the only candidate without a knight of her own, the protagonist steps forward publically to fill that role, only to end up insulting the local royal guard. The main knight guy calls the protagonist's bluff by demanding to know what kind of training he's received, his noble lineage and such stuff. The protagonist can't even answer like a stand up guy. The heroine ends up mortified and drags him out of the room as if he were some ridiculous child. Later on the knight guy didn't have enough with contributing to induce such shame, and challenges the protagonist to a mock combat. The protagonist has endured death like five times by that point. The knight ends up disturbed that this guy that attacks without technique and whose defenses are wide open just won't quit no matter how many times he's beaten. In any case, the protagonist loses consciousness and that's that.
He wakes up to a concerned and shamed heroine, who demands to know what got into him. She's mad that he can't trust the guy; after all, he brazenly broke the couple of promises he made to stay put and not interfere in her affairs. She asks why he struggles so much for her sake, and the protagonist can't even explain himself properly; the biggest introduction to each other happened in a life that this current heroine hasn't experienced, because the protagonist died during that previous run, and he can't even tell that he can return by death, because the curse prevents him to do so. He ends up shooting himself in the foot further by claiming that he should be rewarded for his heroic efforts. The woman seems to lose all remaining respect for this fool, and says that after he's cured of his wounds thanks to the excellent care her connections have procured, they'll have no further contact. He ends the volume a broken man.
A peculiarity of this series is that the protagonist isn't the typical blank vessel for the audience (a technique I despise), but despite having a peculiar personality, he starts out a fumbling mess. He faces people who can wipe the floor with him even in conversations, and whenever there's anything resembling a fight most of what he can do is to endure the pain. Very odd series when you think about it.
As a note, there was a scene in this volume, and two in the previous one, that were cut short in the anime, and in all cases the cut parts featured some ecchi-ness completely absent in the show. In the previous volume the protagonist comments on the librarian's panties and on the size of Rem's boobs, and on this volume, more damningly, the aforementioned evil lady manipulates the protagonist to bet on something, and she's so sure that she'll win that if she loses she'll allow the guy to fondle her ample breasts. Not only that clashes with the tone of the rest of the series, but it's hard to believe that the protagonist, single-mindedly obsessed with the heroine, would accept such a side quest. Whatever. I like perverted stuff as much as the next guy. It only annoys me when it clashes with the general tone; in the case of Konosuba, another prominent isekai, that perversion is woven into its fabric (the main guy has a knack for accidentally stealing panties with his magical powers, their goddess/healer apparently doesn't wear panties while always wearing a very short skirt, their paladin is sadomasochistic, and their mage has a complicated relationship with explosions).
I believe that in the next volume the protagonist starts dealing with the witch's cult assault on everyone he likes, which is one of the stronger points of the first season of the anime.

El cuarto tomo de esta historia compromete más que nada el desarrollo en la relación de Subaru con Emilia, aunque esta vez lo hace para mal y no para bien, y el otro foco de la trama es el desarrollo del ambiente político en la historia, con el comienzo de la selección de la realeza.
También se nos presenta con más personajes, pero no creo que eso sea realmente relevante además de la mención de la peculiar personalidad de Priscilla, que siempre dice que todo lo que hace o le sucede es para su beneficio.
Los diálogos y eventos que suceden en este tomo son muy importantes para la trama como ya mencioné con anterioridad, pero en el gran esquema de las cosas, solo pasan cuatro cosas: se nos presenta a Crusch al inicio y al resto de la selección y caballeros, el altercado con Priscilla, el comienzo de la selección, y el diálogo de Emilia con Subaru. Obviamente pasan más cosas, como la pelea de Subaru con Julius, o las interacciones con Rem, o la reaparición de Felt, pero no las considero tan relevantes como el resto.
La introducción de Ferris también introduce otro elemento a los diálogos, que es la imitación de maullidos, y aunque no sale tanto en el libro, habla tanto con los maullidos que llega a molestar.
De lo que más me quejo es que la gran mayoría del libro es la selección, pero de eso en más está bien.

If you made it to book 4, you know about the series and how Subaru will die and die and die until he can find the solution for the scenario he’s facing. While interesting, it’s really hard to progress a story if you keep rewinding events. And thus, this book 4 is 100% story and character development.
The new characters introduced are really interesting, the world continues to be super imaginative and the ending of this volume is just something else!
For the first time, there are some quite relevant differences between the LN and the anime. First of all, Al, Priscilla’s Knight is way more developed. There are other minor differences: for example the why and how Old Man Rom shows up in the castle. But most of all, Emilia’s presentation to the council, Roswall’s scheming, and Puk’s real identity are considerably better in the novel (they crammed this volume into 2 episodes and skipped some key world building that leads me to think there will be no more Re:Zero anime)

白狐社的動畫刪掉很多劇情呀，果然是情節太滿塞不進兩季的篇幅嗎？
小說原作中對於「王選」各方陣營都有完整的「競選宣言」，還描寫到血色新娘（普利希拉公主）身旁的那位怪異的騎士「阿爾」，居然也是十八年前被召喚到這異世來的劍奴；也就是男主角在這裡還有位貨真價實的「同鄉」——但動畫中全都來不及解明……

No use of time travel, just Subaru being a stupid asshole for an entire book and getting his ahh beat publicly, before then being disowned by the love of his life for him being weird as shit.
Also pretty boring exposition, the new characters are okay, but there are alot of snobby noble types that are not utterly insufferable but basically just uninteresting and even cliche. Crusch (the Karsten candidate) was okay, oh and I did somewhat like Anastasia. And Al is a REALLY interesting concept character but as of now he just kowtows to an annoying bitch all the time which is really weird. I'd still love to get more content and lore about him.
Julius is honestly okay. What he did actually made sense in, I just love the concept of spitting on royalty and nobility in general, so Subaru's disrespect to the Knightly code was fun for me. Until it wasn't. Ugh.

Look, all I'm saying is this (assuming you can attain an easy suicide method and are comfortable risking the possibility that you don't have unlimited resets with this power):
- kill yourself and rewind
- actually do what Emilia tells you to and don't be a stubborn annoying asshole 24/7
- learn the language of this world by resetting each day to get further and further along with the curriculum while only taking 1 day total
- then (after royal selection ceremony) go shit talk Julius
- fight him, memorize his attack patterns with resets (would probably take at least 50), then beat his ass as revenge, just for fun

Damn, this is 10 times better than the anime. So glad I decided to read the book, everything was more explicit and well written unlike the cut version in the anime.

Pensando de nuevo en sus hazañas,se dio cuenta que eran considerablemente menos de lo que pensaba.Quizá sería mejor decir que había estado envuelto en varias hazañas,pero el aporte de Subaru no fue casi nada.
―Diré que pareces muy cercano a Lady Emilia.No parece que seas un simple sirviente.Caminas por una senda traicionera.Ella podría convertirse en la siguiente reina de Lugunica algún día.
―Ahora mismo,somos solo una chica super tierna y un aburrido sirviente.Con un futuro infinito por delante,nunca sabes qué pasará.Pienso que,si tiene que terminar con alguien,también podría ser yo,incluso si soy ‘indigno.’ Podría requerir mucha persistencia,pero ese es mi ideal de ganar-ganar.

Esos eran los sentimientos de Subaru y guiaban todas sus acciones.Creía que sus esfuerzos comunicarian sus sentimientos más fuertes que cualquier palabra

Subaru gritó en sorpresa ante el repentino impacto de la suave tela que sostenía Emilia.Su rostro estaba tenso mientras mordía su labio,el cual parecía estremecerse por la fuerte emoción.
―¡Deja de mentir y decir que haces cosas por mi bien…! Venir al castillo,pelear con Julius,usar magia… ¿Todo eso fue por mí? ¡No te pedí ninguna de esas cosas! ¡Todo lo que quería es que te quedaras en la posada con Rem y esperaras.Usar más magia es muy malo para ti,así que te pedí que no la usaras.
Subaru había pasado por encima de sus palabras cada vez basándose en sus propias ilusiones egoístas.Él pensaba que los buenos resultados compensarían sus promesas rotas.Y si no,esperaba que ella entendiera que sus motivaciones eran genuinas.
―Lo siento,no te escuché.Pero estás equivocada,yo,yo no lo hice por mi bien… Emilia,tú… ¿no me crees?
―Quiero creerte… Quería creerte… pero tú fuiste quien me detuvo.No mantuviste ni una sola promesa ¡Tú… lo prometiste,pero las rompiste todas como si fueran nada,¿verdad?!
Había pisoteado su confianza.
―¿No mantienes tu palabra y quieres que confíe en ti…? Aunque lo pidas,no puedo ¿Por qué insistes en ayudarme?
Viendo a Subaru herirse,forzándose a si mismo a sonreír,aguantar mucho dolor y arriesgar su vida,ella debió haber albergado esas dudas hace un tiempo.Por ende,este momento era inevitable ¿Por qué Subaru trabajaba hasta la muerte por Emilia?¿Por qué se había aferrado tan tenazmente a ella desde que llegó a ese mundo?
―Quiero hacer todo lo que pueda para ayudarte porque me salvaste…
―¿Yo… te… salvé…?
―No creo que entiendas cuánto me ayudaste.Pero eso… me salvó más de lo que pueden expresar las palabras.
―Subaru,no te entiendo…
―Eso… no se puede evitar.Pero es verdad.Tú me salvaste.Es por eso que traté… de devolverte el favor… pero ahora,no…
―…¡¡Te lo dije,no lo entiendo!! ¿Te salvé? No hice tal cosa.La primera vez que te encontré fue en la bodega de botines.¡Nunca antes te había visto! ¡Si te hubiera visto antes,si eso fuese verdad,yo… yo…!
―¿Por qué… no entiendes… Pensé,que tú… Entre todas las personas entenderías…
―La ‘yo’ en tu cabeza es muy buena,¿verdad? Ella lo entiende todo sin siquiera tener que preguntar.Tu dolor,tu tristeza,tu enojo …los siente todos como si fueran suyos… Si no lo dices no puedo entenderlo,Subaru.
Había arriesgado su vida,aguantado el dolor de ser mordisqueado,se había limpiado las lágrimas y lo había sobrepasado,todo para seguir protegiendo el ídolo que había erguido en su mente.Y,así,su utopía arbitraria,una que nunca había existido,se derrumbó sin hacer ruido.
―Todo… lo que he hecho…¡Llegaste tan lejos gracias a mí ¡Igual que en la bodega de botines cuando tu emblema fue robado! ¡Te salvé de esa asesina serial súper peligrosa! ¡Puse mi cuerpo en la línea! ¡¡Todo porque eres importante para mí!! ¡Como en la mansión! ¡Apenas y lo logré allí! ¡Mi cráneo se rompió,mi cabeza salió volando,pero todos en la aldea se salvaron,¿no es así?! ¡Y las cosas salieron de la mejor manera posible para Ram y Rem,estoy seguro de ello! ¡Eso fue porque yo estaba allí,¿verdad?! ¡¡Debes compensarme de alguna manera por todo lo que he hecho por ti…!!
La búsqueda vanagloriaba de Subaru por elogios,su deseo continuo de satisfacción,y su deseo egoísta de ser querido,habían sido los extremos inconscientes que lo llevaron por su camino…
―…Bien.Subaru,tengo contigo una deuda increíblemente grande por todas las cosas que has hecho,entonces… te lo compensaré todo.Así podremos acabar con esto.
―Yo… tenía esperanzas.Pensaba,que solo tal vez,tú… tú no me darías un trato especial,Subaru.Pensaba que podrías verme como a una persona ordinaria,como una chica ordinaria,igual que a cualquier otro…
―Yo… no puedo hacer eso.Incluso si te deshaces de todas las personas del mundo,no puedo hacer eso.No puedo verte igual que a todos los demás,simplemente no puedo

There's a lot that I could talk about with this review but saying anything really without going into massive detail would be a disservice and you're not here to see me waffle about my issue but suffice it to say the main issue I have is in the final 3rd of the book with a certain silver haired half elf who is very mistrusting and very silly
On a technical level the story is as good as it as always been
I love character interactions and I also do love the new current dynamic for Rem Her slightly obsessive Reactions to other people getting attention are adorable
Of course my favourite character of this arc is Felix Definitely Felix is best girl
It's just that last fit with Emelia That Really drags it down for me ( And yes I know why she does it it doesn't make up for the fact that literally everything Subaru has done has been for her and she thinks hes doing it for monetary reasons and it's Idiotic)
The end really brings it down, luckily I know how the next volume goes and it's gonna break my heart At least in that 1 we get the "I am going ways going to trust you youre Subaru" From the best girl of all the best girls

The writing level is about the same as the other volumes, with a lot more dialogue in this one. It was good setup for the upcoming arc, but was really frustrating to read at times. At so many points a Subaru is about to say something that’ll resolve a misunderstanding only to get cut off. It’s fine when it’s the witch’s time freeze preventing him from talking about ReturnBD, but at least 3 other times it’s just the next event cutting off his speech. When it came to a big confrontation, he uncharacteristically floundered for words, making the worst of the situation.
Actually in retrospect it makes sense. Subaru as of now isn’t certain in his motives, and now he has to reexamine himself. It was just painful to read.
My last comment regards Al. I’m surprised Al didn’t ask at all about the state of modern Japan having been gone so long. His interaction with Subaru felt lacking, and his existence brings up so many questions. Will probably be explored later.

Mit diesem Band geht die Hauptgeschichte so richtig los. Die Königswahl beginnt und wir bekommen einen Haufen der wichtigsten Figuren eingeführt. Da ich diesen Abschnitt bisher nur aus dem Anime kannte, war diese Version eine sehr positive Erfahrung, da die Geschichte viel abgerundeter und voller Details steckt, die in der Adaption verloren gegangen sind. Und mit Subaru beginnt einer der besten Charakterarcs überhaupt.

It must be tough trying to live in another world, where a mistake of custom or tongue will get you killed. That is what it's like for the main character in this series. He arrives from Japan to live in this fantasy world. Now it's time for the contenders for the Royal Crown to be revealed and the stakes are very high. Can Suburu keep in mouth shut, say the right things and stay in line. Not a chance.
This was an interesting read. The universe is nice. Suburu's only power is restarting at a save point when he dies. So far how the world works and the various factions trying to get influence are slowly being revealed, and the story is moving kind of slowly. The characters also are trying to make their lives harder. Not a bad series, just not the best.

Meus amigos, eu vi no anime e senti vergonha e dor do Subaru, aqui na novel simplesmente foi PIOR a situação. Eu nao senti simplesmente vergonha, eu precisava parar a leitura pra beber uma água. Tomar um café, esticar as pernas. REZAR QUE ACABASSE.

E digo mais, o anime cortou algumas coisas importantes, ou melhor, que eu considerei importantes. Achei incrível as personagens novas, lindas, maravilhosas. MAS O CAPÍTULO 4 E 5 DESSA NOVEL DESTRUIRAM O MEU DIA.

The start of a new story arc and a ton of new characters are introduced in this one. Has relatively weak pacing for the first half of the book but otherwise was a great read. A lot of new information given in this one and the overall plot takes a couple steps forward.

Nesse volume as coisas passam a se movimentar mais. A história avança de um ambiente restrito para a competição real entre as "Dragon Maidens". Eu sempre tenho minhas expectativas superadas do quanto o Subaru vai apanhar em cada volume. E nesse a carga não foi apenas física. Bom, amei a continuação e a recomendo aos que gostam da história.
(Eu aproveitei o tempo do ônibus ontem para ler)

This is one of the best Re:Zero volumes and is the best start for any arc in the series for me. Not only is the scope of the world immensely increased in this volume; this volume also perfectly sets up the inciting incident for Subaru's future growth and highlights his flaws. It's a good mix of more slice of life events and stellar character moments and characterization for all of the new characters introduced. 10/10.

Subaru was such a frustrating character in this one, he was a spoiled brat and payed a heavy consequence because of that, we meet an intriguing and irritating character and someone with an usual connection to Subaru, and for the grand and important piece of plot, we get the topic of the Royal Selection and all that comes with it.

Meu hype nesse volume foi altíssimo.
A introdução das... candidatas..? é algo que gostei de ver na adaptação pra anime. Notei que boa parte do livro não foi adaptada, o que me deixou triste já que a Priscilla é uma ótima personagem.
O Al vir de outro mundo foi algo meio inesperado, embora ele tivesse dado sinais disso até na forma de falar.

Now we're getting to the parts with content that was cut from the anime! I was shocked to see that Al had an entire bit about being another isekai guy, that just didn't appear in the anime. It feels like there was a lot more social context to this portion of the story that the anime wasn't equipped to show, or skipped.

Excellent character work tbh. It uses the fact that the narrator mostly biases the main character's perspective to effectively set the tone scene to scene. I was gripped all throughout, which is truly commendable considering 80% of the book takes place in one room.
