An engaging picture book that reveals hidden images when a flash light is shone on certain parts of each page. My son loved this! He kept exclaiming “wow” as each image was revealed and he could tell me back each science fact he learned along the way! This is the kind of book that makes learning fun!!
Summary: This book is all about the human body. It explains what different parts of a body does and even shows art of things inside of a human. That includes muscles, skeletons, lungs, brain, and so much more. It describes how each of the different parts of us move and work and how they all come together to make us what and who we are.
Analysis: I find this book FASCINATING! I absolutely love how intriguing it is and how it describes the human body and how it works in simplistic terms that children can grasp. It brings an element of imagination and ties it in with how we work as humans. It is absolutely wonderfully done, and how the art is laid out to be able to shine a light and see what is behind the page is amazing!!
Classroom Ideas: This book can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used to show children the basics of human anatomy without the complexity of it all. It can help children better understand how their bodies work and why it does things. It can be used to help children find interest in knowing more about humans.
This is one of my favorite interactive, informational books! It provides a fascinating journey through the human body, using the shine-a-light feature where hidden images are revealed when you shine a light to them. The book covers topics such as organs, muscles, bones, and systems. This book makes learning exciting and engaging! I also really enjoy the illustrations in this book because of their color and detail that complement the text well. This book is best suited for 2nd and 3rd grade because it introduces basic anatomy and functions in a simple way that is easy for 7-10 year-olds to understand. After reading this book together, I would have students participate in a project where they research a specific body system and create a poster to represent their presentation.
I hate the last page of this one, "The human body is so amazing it can even make a new brother or sister for you!" which is a weird message, especially since there are situations where this isn't true, and it is made even weirder since the first page already established that babies grow in mommies' bellies. Other than this, however, it's a great book that has opened a lot of discussions (and an obsession with fingerprints -- "Does [baby brother] have fingerprints TOO?!") with the littles I sit for. The 4yo would have me read it with her all day long if I'd let her.
And the flashlight gimmick is very effective in this one.
Lots of interesting, factual info about the respiratory, cardiovascular and circulatory systems! People from diverse racial backgrounds represented, plus there's gender equity. The concept of shining a flashlight through the front page to see the picture somewhat hidden in the back is a creative one! It's just hard to make it work in a bright room. Highly recommend! My preschooler and kindergartener liked it.
Impressive and engaging! We love ‘The Human Body’ book by Carron Browns and Rachael Saunders which provides an array of fun and discovery. We find bones, fingerprints, a developing baby and more as the flashlight uncovers more than what is first seen. From a parent’s perspective, I love that it promotes healthy choices and a basic understanding of what our bodies are capable of - and do without us even knowing! My children 2, 4, 7, and 8 all enjoy this!
Miss 2 loves it! We talk about how the body works a lot because (a) it interests her and (b) she has a lot of medical appointments. It's so much fun using the torch to light up the bones, muscles, digestive system etc. and also good being able to just the turn the page over and look at the black & white diagram.
A really cool book that explains the body’s systems (reproductive system not included) in very simplistic/basic terms. My oldest has asked to read this multiple times a day over the last few days. He’s also referenced it while he is doing things: “the apple is going down my esophagus”. The way the illustrations work is really cool. Definitely recommend.
This book talks about the human body and the things it can do. From talking about the digestive system to the nervous system. You can shine a flashlight behind each page to see what is inside the body.
This is a great way for your child to discover, participate and learn about the importance of the human body. This book shows beautiful and vivid detail illustrations on how our bodies function. Don't forget to bring the flashlight for you and your child to discover the hidden images in the pages.
An awesome early introduction to the human body. My 6yo loved it. So creative. It's got some good jumping off points if you need to begin to talk about intimacy, too. But nothing you need to worry about if it's not time yet. We had some great discussions about illness, baby teeth, and healing.
It was an excellent book for my son. He's been asking about the body more since he read it. It covered all the basics, and the shine-a-light feature made it interactive. We loved reading it together.
A great book for preschoolers and kindergartners to learn about their body systems. Made fun with a flashlight to see the underside of the page, which reveals bones, muscles, etc.
What a fun way to learn about the human body. This is part of the Shine-A-Light book series in which a flashlight is needed to illuminate the illustrations.
Usborne is known for offering super interactive books. We just got this one and it is crazy cool. It teaches young readers about how the body works by gently introducing them to: pregnancy, your skeleton, muscles, fingerprints, lungs/airways, cardiovascular system, nervous system, the five senses, digestive system, healthy foods, urinary system, adult teeth, broken bones, and dreaming. What makes it interactive, is you read the page that asks a question on one of the above topics. The reader then lifts the page and uses a flashlight to reveal a hidden picture and the answer to the question. You then turn the page to learn a couple more facts. Such a fun way to learn!!!
I really enjoyed this book. This book was the first I read from the Usborne publishing company. I purchased it after encountering the company at a fair. I got it for the daughter of a friend, but I read it before sending it to her. It was very fun to shine a flashlight under the pages to see the different parts of the body and how they function. I think the book is a great children's book and worthy of being in any family's collection.
This "Shine-a-Light" book shows readers all about the human body. The images on the pages are fine at first glance, but when you shine a light from behind the page (or hold it up to the light), it becomes so much more.
