Rate this book

Two resourceful ten-year-olds start up a pet clinic one weekend and get a lot more than they bargained for in the first book of the Juliet, Nearly a Vet series.

Juliet loves animals and hopes to one day be a vet like her mother. Her best friend Chelsea loves grooming animals, so when the local pet motel closes down, the two girls decide to start their own practice. Their first clients include a cat, guinea pig, parrot, two rats, a python and a rooster and they each create a bit of chaos for the girls. When the rats go missing and the snake has a odd bump in its middle, Juliet must take action before the owners pick up their pets!

The Great Pet Plan it an exciting start to this early reader series. Young pet lovers will enjoy the hilarious antics and creativity of this budding vet and her loyal best friend as they navigate the world of animals. There is never a dull moment in this story and children will learn a bit too -- like how to clip a guinea pig's nails, for one. A fun quiz at the back of the book reinforces the animals facts they've read about so they can figure out if they too are "nearly a vet".

I won a copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.

I received this book free from Goodreads and the Author Rebecca Johnson for an honest review.
My 8 year old daughter read this to me over the weekend and she thought it brilliant.
Juliet wants to be a Vet and Chelsea wants to be an animal trainer and groomer, both girls are looking for more animal experience and organised to look after their friends animals overnight without letting their parents know - Of course a few unexpected things happen - it's harder to look after an assortment of animals than you might first think.
My daughter laughed many times, had moments of concern and now wants to read more in this series.
It has accurate information about basic animal care and multiple choose questions at the end to see how much the reader has comprehended and recalled.
The words were easy enough for her to read or sound out with the exception of Cacophony - but it's always great IMO to have a couple of words they don't know to expand their vocabulary.
A few small pictures keep this book interesting for the 6-10 age group (give or take depending on reading ability)

I received this a Goodreads giveaway. I must admit that I have not read this myself but my 8 year old daughter grabbed it as soon as it arrived and read it straight away. She loved it and now wants to read more in the series. She recommends it to all her book reading friends so a big thank you to the author.

Thank you Goodreads and Rebecca Johnson for giving me a copy of this book to read.

This is a great fun read for children.

I loved the line 'parents are always afraid of new things' it made me laugh out loud.

The book is written almost diary like through the eyes of Juliet. She tells us about her days and the animals she meets along the way. Her ways to help them. Having those little bits about the animals as in what they eat and other information was a fantastic idea in letting kids know a little bit more about an animal.
It is written with non complicated words so that a middle reader will be able to read easily.
My daughter loves reading so she had to read it (as it was school holidays she read it as soon as it arrived). Hearing her laugh as she read and seeing the smile on her face let me know that it was going to be a fun read.

I read this book to my five year old and she loved it. The book is aimed at slightly older children ofcourse; I needed to explain parts of the plot to my daughter.
We both learnt new facts about animals. Her favourite new fact was that roosters only crow if they see the sun rising. Therefore, if you cover their eyes, they won't crow. She loved the accompanying drawing.
The drawings are clear and fun and follow the light tone of the book.
As a part of a series, we plan to follow the adventures of Juliet, nearly a vet.

Currently reading - but don't know if we will continue. Me and my daughter were grossed out on the girl sniffing the dogs ear for infection. Threw the book down - My daughter didn't want to read anymore - neither did I. it made us feel sick honestly. Looks like it's written well from what I read but don't think we will continue this one.

Each of these books is chock-a-block full of fab knowledge about animals. They're so funny too, causing me to wake to giggling coming from my early-morning reader's room (what a nice way to wake up, too!).

This series is science and ethics and friendship and fun. Just be sure to read each book first, in case your child tests you with the Quiz at the end!!

The book tells me that we have to be gentle with animals.
Juliet is a very brave little girl and gentle to animals even leeches.
Juliet is nearly a vet but I think she actually is vet, you know.

A rushed ending with a few holes. Otherwise pretty enjoyable.
