Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project volume 3. Continues Shinji's slice of life adventures. This time being a Rei Ayanami focused volume with lots of anime highjinks and fanservice. The waifu wars continue can Asuka comeback from this L? Gendo also gets a spotlight in this volume and he's a completely different character from his anime original more comedic which shouldn't work if you watched the anime but it does end up being fun. That's the overall view of this series is it's fun its slice of life, parody and romance in Evangelion that works. Even though the source material comes from Evangelion. The series where the world ends in an orange fanta apocalypse brought by a sexually frustrated teenager. Absolute Kino.
This volume is very sweet. It spends a lot of time establishing Rei and Shinji’s relationship and a blossoming romance. I’ve settled into the vibe of this series now and it feels like someone went “what if these kids were just allowed to be kids instead of physically and mentally tortured?” That’s certainly a nice scenario for anyone who’s grown attached to these characters. Fun fact - I found a bookmark in my copy that must have been where I reached last time I read this.
Shinji Ikari Raising Project: Vol. 3 - This one started off well enough with a chapter that gave Asuka some nuanced characterization, but soon enough, it was chapter after chapter of Shinji and Rei. There were some actual plot points in terms of SEELE's plans in this version of the story and such, and a hilarious bit about Gendo attending a parent-teacher conference, so it wasn't all repetitive. Hoping the next volume is a little more diverse.
Much better than vol. 2! Lots of intrigue starting as SEELE show themselves. Most of the time was spent in the lab though nothing really went on there. This volume concentrates on character. Mostly Rei and Ikari which is fabulous stuff and Asuka getting all jealous. The other characters have minor parts continuing their stories but I just loved the Rei/Ikari parts. And this cover is to-die-for!
