Oh, what a pleasure it always is to read a book by Dawn Crandall! I am so, so sorry that this wonderful series is already over as I've had such an amazing time reading it. It is so easy to get lost in Crandall's beautiful, glamorous Gilded Age world and follow the characters on all their adventures and romances!

I love the uniqueness and distinct voice this author has; her books really stand out and never feel like a repetition of something already out there. Even better, they are never a repetition of themselves, either. In the first book, The Hesitant Heiress, we were presented with a Pride & Prejudice type of story, in The Bound Heart it was friendship-to-lovers, in The Captive Imposter it was mistaken identities, and finally in The Cautious Maiden it was my favourite, the redeemed rake. ;)

And even then, Crandall manages to be original and stand out in the trope. The hero is not redeemed by the heroine. He is already reformed as the start of the book, and must prove himself to the heroine before she can truly trust him. I really loved that idea, it was fresh and unique and worked incredibly well in this book!

I admit that I've been excited about Vance Everstone's story ever since meeting him in The Bound Heart. The author's best character so far, he has been developed since the second book, and really stands out against the rest. Obviously, he's my favourite, and obviously, I'm madly in love with him. He is the epitome of the tall-dark-swoony hero, with enough scandal attached to his name to make him the Rogue of rogues, but enough charm and charisma to make him completely fascinating, coupled, naturally, with jaw-dropping good looks and fabulous wealth. A real devil yet a true knight in shining armour, Vance Everstone is a mystery that was delightful to solve, and the hero you can't wait to see living happily ever after with his lady.

Violet Hawthorne could not have been more perfect for Vance if she'd tried. Of course, she is the innocent maiden, the damsel in distress who needs to be rescued and loved, and believe me, she deserves it. I loved her instantly in The Captive Imposter and knew she would be an excellent match for Vance. Beautiful, kind and selfless, Violet is not afraid to stand up for what is right, and despite the numerous misadventures she suffers over the course of the book, she stays true to herself and her beliefs. Violet (despite her name, haha) is no shrinking flower. She is strong and level-headed, and only loses her sense when Vance gets too close... ;) I especially loved how her innocence was portrayed, as it was so believable. I was often amazed at Vance's self-control when she seemed the one who wanted more, without fully realizing what she was getting herself into. I get tired of shy heroines who don't know their own minds, so Violet was such a welcome change in that respect! She was wonderfully pure-in-heart, but at the same time, man could she be bold!

The Cautious Maiden is a romantic romance through and through, and definitely one of my favourites of the year. It features one of the best romantic scenes in all of literature, (), plenty of rapturous kisses to make you sigh, and enough dreaminess to last a good long while. This is definitely a series I will go back to and re-read over the years. I strongly recommend all four books, they are some of the best romances out there!

A thousand thanks to the author for the opportunity to read and review this book, I enjoyed it immensely! :D

In order to save Violet Hawthorne’s reputation, Vance Everstone, former rake now turned into a godly man, proposes to her and decides to do anything in his power to protect her future wife from a dangerous and devious man who won Violet in a poker game with her brother Ezra, owner of a brothel. When everything seems settled and the wedding approaches, though, new problems arise and Vance’s past and Violet’s insecurities risk to destroy a possible happy ending between them. Will they learn to trust each other? Will they follow their hearts or will they be victims of their own fears?

When I first started to read this series I was intrigued by Vance Everstone, a character that I did not even meet in the first book, The Hesitant Heiress. Then, when I got to book number two, The Bound Heart, I read something about his past that made me hate him. He had done something truly awful and I did not want to know anything about him (yes, I get angry with some characters even though I know they are not real people). To me he was despicable, period. But in the third book, The Captive Imposter, I could see something different about him, his attitude was not the same, he was not hideous like “Vance the scoundrel” I had previously met, maybe because of a dreadful event that happens right at the end of “The Bound Heart”. And I thought that maybe it would not be so bad to read about his own story, after all…

Goodness! I was not ready for that! He is completely another man!! A person that had never respected any women and was only able to take what he wanted without caring for anybody’s feelings, now is an honourable and virtuous man. He wants what is best for the woman he cares about and he actually cares about someone other than himself! I was surprised -almost shocked- that he was so different. Of course, he does not turn into a saint all of a sudden but his slow change, his struggle to respect his new beliefs and the fact that he wanted to be a new man so badly, a man that has nothing to be ashamed of is wonderful. I loved reading about his encounter with God, how He changed him, how Vance wanted to be loved in a pure way by a sweet, good woman. That was so lovely and just right! I did not believe it was possible to love a man like Vance Everstone but now I know that anything is possible!

Violet is wonderful! She did not have an easy life after her parents’ death but now she is determined to have a good, respectful life despite her problems with her brother Ezra and all those people that want her to be a different kind of woman. She thinks she does not deserve a man like Vance (even after he tells her what he did in the past) but tries to accept her future with peace and gratefulness. Violet is probably most honest with herself when it comes to knowing her own heart. She soon realizes that her heart and soul belongs to Vance and is actually ready to admit her feelings for him without fighting them. I missed not knowing what Vance was thinking and feeling throughout the whole story (readers can only wish for him to love her back until the end) but, oh, the misunderstandings, the angst and all the enemies that threaten to destroy their relationship! Do they really love each other? Is Vance interested in her body only? Can Violet hope to win a reformed rake’s heart? It was so beautiful to find the answers to all these questions!

Once again, Dawn Crandall and her first person narration captivated me. I was not able to do anything aside from reading and reading and reading her book! She definitely knows how to make a story engaging and I happily added her name to my list of favourite authors. I know that I will always enjoy getting to her books!

“The Cautious Maiden” is sweet, romantic and so very beautiful! It really won me over from the first page and I highly recommend it! If you have not read the other books in the series you can read this one all the same, but I would suggest reading them all because the “Everstone Chronicles” is one of the best series ever!

I just finished reading this and my heart is still pounding extra fast due to the highly climatic ending. I have really enjoyed this series, especially how all the characters from the previous books always play a part in each novel. Trust me, once you read about one of the Everstones, you will want to go back and read them all.

This was Vance's story. His story is a story that shows how the acceptance of Christ and the forgiveness of sins can truly change a person into a new being. Although Vance was a new person, his story shows how the fleshly desires are still a struggle and how past mistakes may always carry consequences. I really appreciated Violet. I loved how she was able to trust him and forgive him of all his past.

* My special thanks to the author for providing me with a copy of this book.

Once again Dawn Crandall brings us a stirring historical novel with just the right blend of romance and redemption. Violet’s situation captured me from the opening scene, and I was equally intrigued by the hero, Vance. Readers who are looking for well-written historical romance with emotional depth will enjoy the whole series and especially The Cautious Maiden.

THIS BOOK. THIS HERO. THE HAIR PINNING SCENE. THAT KISS. Still. Have. Not. Recovered. I may never. And that’s perfectly fine with me.

Vance Everstone completely captured my heart. And Dawn Crandall once again reminded me why she is one of my very favorite authors. Her ability to paint an exquisite story shines in The Cautious Maiden, and her talent at writing romance has never been better displayed.

The kisses in The Cautious Maiden are PERFECTION. As I said earlier, I still have not recovered. What makes the kisses all the more swoonworthy is when they are read against the backdrop of Vance’s newfound commitment to purity and respect. Because, you see, there is more to this story than the passionate kisses and the smolderingly sexy hero and the sweet heroine (yes, I know I haven’t talked about Violet much … but … VANCE. That’s my only excuse). What makes The Cautious Maiden one of my very favorite books is the beautiful picture of redemption integral to the characters.

In The Cautious Maiden, author Dawn Crandall takes a reformed rogue with a redeemed heart and plants him solidly in the Heroes Hall of Fame. Passion and purity waltz together in perfect harmony; both swoon-worthy in their own right, the combination in Vance Everstone will leave you breathless. The power of Christ to transform a life… the power of love to transform a heart … the power of grace to transform a rogue into a hero. I have loved each book so far in The Everstone Chronicles, but I firmly believe that The Cautious Maiden is Dawn’s best yet!

Another splendid work of art from one of my favourite authors, The Cautious Maiden is the fourth and final in the series The Everstone Chronicles by the author. I am happy and I am sad. Happy that the character that I had come to hate has grown to be endearing by the time I completed this book, and sad because the series has come to an end. More about this later. First things first, here comes my blabbering about the final installment of The Everstone Chronicles:

“I shall do one thing in this life-One thing certain-that is, love you, and long for you, and keep wanting you till I die.”

This line basically summarizes the theme that we come across in TCM. It is a journey of two characters, their growth and acknowledgement of their lives and love. It is the story about Vance Everstone and Violet Hawthorne. Vance is one of the Everstone siblings and has appeared substantially in The Bound Heart and towards the final parts of The Captive Imposter. In TCM his relationship with Violet is tried and tested through a series of ups and downs. Their conscious abstinence and the endeavours they put up to resist while still loving each other through the depths of their souls is what is so beautiful about this story. This book is emotionally power packed.

“The heart has its reasons which reason knows not.”

They are drawn to one another, each unaware and yet each getting emotionally involved with the other. Both try to deny and both try to resist, but beyond all reason and beyond all justification and yet with good reason they are tied up with each other. And they do so fall for one another! Right from the beginning of the book, they do share a different bond with each other. And although Vance acts indifferent he still wants her to have to do nothing with him because of his past, in fear of causing her reputation to get damaged. And Violet is so engrossed in the complicated feelings of her heart and the situation of her life that it is quite late into the story that she realizes what lies beneath his apparent stance. They have splendid chemistry between them and quite a struggle of emotions and feelings.

“A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it”

Neither of them had thought of being tied to each other, and neither are they (apparently) eager to be together, for reasons of their own. Both are ready to head their own ways and yet are destined to be companions on that road. The complications of their plans, their feelings and the people surrounding them acting in devious ways makes the reader really stay intrigued and curious to know how will they finally end up!

“She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.”

Violet Hawthorne is quite the cautious heroine. Experiences in life through betrayal and abandonment have taught her to be cautious. She is lonely after having been betrayed by her brother and is facing the consequences of his indecent activities. She is endangered and sought after by Rowan Steele, the man to whom her brother Ezra lost her in a poker game. Though she is unaware of the same, the involvement of Rowan Steele is what actually leads her to be a part of Vance’s life. Her feelings for Vance are quite evident throughout the book though she always tries to cover them up. She faces her own struggles, firstly by losing her parents, both at the same time and then by her brother’s betrayal. It does not end there. When she is engaged to Vance, her next struggle begins with being accepted in his family and society. And then, there always is her constant struggle with herself in relation to Vance and her feelings for him and her doubts regarding his for her. I liked her all the more because she is a storyteller.

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.”

The life of the book: Vance Everstone. *Sigh* *Swoonworthy* He is the chief reason you should read this book. You will understand my sentiment further when you read TCM after you have read TBH and TCI. What a phenomenal change is Vance Everstone! Brilliant character growth. In fact, I had started the book with a heavy heart and a prejudice in my mind, that how am I supposed to take for a hero a guy whom I have practically hated in the previous one and a half books? And oh boy, wasn’t I pleasantly surprised! Vance in one word is: Endearing. Absolutely loved him! In fact I had to make a mental note: never judge, not even a fictional character!
What I loved about him is his redemption- his awareness of the previous wrongs he has committed and his constant contemplation and endeavors to better himself and prevent himself from becoming what he used to be. He has become so honourable and virtuous with a Bible as his constant companion and his earnestness to learn what message God has passed through it and trying to imbibe within himself Christ like virtues. He is as cautious as Violet, rather more IMO. It is a sort of rebirth that he is experiencing, the whole renewal of his character and his spirituality. His feelings for Violet are so deep and pure, the respect in which he holds her is just so beautiful.

“It strikes me with anguish to be torn from you.”

They come together, go apart. They do fall apart and heart wrenchingly at that. Throughout this phase, I had a lump in my throat. They both have their own fears, trust issues, insecurities and doubts, and it is evidently very challenging for them both to accept and then sustain the unplanned and unanticipated changes their lives are facing, for one another.

“My faith and commitment, to you only, Violet. Behold, you are consecrated to me with this ring.”

What really comes across in the story is that it is just not enough to be tied in a relationship but it needs much much more to actually stay together. The past always comes haunting. And the effort it takes for forgiveness and acceptance are mammoth. Oh, what a touching tale this has been! I would not like to indulge into spoilers, I don’t want you to miss the fun, you just got to read it.

The Everstone Chronicles

The Series starts with The Hesitant Heiress, the story about Amaryllis Brigham and the reformed rake Nathan Everstone. Then second in the series is The Bound Heart having Lawry Hampton and Meredyth Summercourt and their love and life. Though the entire series is exceptional, this is my absolute favourite! Then comes The Captive Imposter with Estella Everstone and Dexter Blakely, Estella being my favourite heroine from all the four! And finally we have, The Cautious maiden with Vance Everstone and Violet Hawthorne.

Some very beautiful lines, quotes and extracts in all the four books which are such a joy to read and preserve.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves to read some moving and touching stories and stories that take you back to the basics of pure devotion and unadulterated love. And though The Cautious Maiden can be read as a standalone book, I would advise you to start from The Hesitant Heiress and then move sequentially. You will enjoy it even greater that way. If you haven’t, you HAVE to grab a copy of each today! TCM released Oct 4th!
What an exceptional series this has been. I've been refreshed reading it.

The Author

I would especially like to put in a word about Dawn Crandall here. She is a blessed soul and has an impeccable way of putting a story forward. I have read all four of her books, sequentially at that, and I have felt like actually experiencing living in the lives and times of the Boston society of the gilded age. There has been a flow through her books and even through the last one we come to know of what is happening in the lives of the characters of the first book, which gives it a sort of continuity and a sense of reality to it. I would wish the blessings of The Almighty upon her and wish her more success in her future endeavours.

“How strange the workings of life were, that God could work so many things together.” -Dawn Crandall, The Cautious Maiden

The Cautious Maiden is the fourth and final book in the Everstone Chronicles, a Jane Austen-esque series chronicling the lives of different members in the prestigious Everstone family. This book starts with a lovely young lady by the name of Violet Hawthorne, whose parents recent deaths and unscrupulous brother Ezra’s brothel make it difficult for her reputation. To make matters worse, because of her brother’s actions she is irrevocably compromised and forced to accept a proposal from a man she hardly knows, Vance Everstone. Traveling to his family’s home to announce their rushed engagement proves difficult when Violet discovers that her brother bet her hand in marriage to a dangerous man and lost. Vance is determined to protect her, but Violet can’t help but wonder about their relationship as she finds herself falling for him more every day.

Dawn Crandall has done it again. Given us a beautiful historical romance to make us swoon! Violet and Vance’s story was simply perfect with everything I look for in a romantic novel. I liked that it wasn’t insta-love, it was definitely a gradual love story that entertained throughout. Vance was a bit of a tortured soul with a past and his growth regarding faith and love made for such a heartwarming story. And does it start with a bang! From the moment Violet’s hair is chopped off by her sketchy brother and Vance finds her crying, I knew this was going to be an absorbing read. There are very few novels where the character’s chemistry just flies off the page and this is one of them. Although the romance was fairly steamy for a Christian novel, it was still a clean read. I loved everything about this book, from the little details like the amazing quotes before every chapter to the emotionally-charged, explosive ending. The best thing I can say in my review is this – if you enjoy period romances you will adore this book.

“Vance was different, and for some reason, I’d known from the moment we’d met that he would be more than just another hotel guest.” -Dawn Crandall, The Cautious Maiden

Among one of my all-time favorite series, I can’t recommend The Cautious Maiden or The Everstone Chronicles enough. Dawn Crandall is a literary talent and deserves so much recognition for this wonderful series. Although I’m sad it’s ending, I will be re-reading and recommending to my sisters who love a good period as much as I do! This spellbinding book made for the perfect read as I sat in a coffee shop on a rainy day. Seriously, go get it!

Violet Hawthorne has always been cautious around men. Tragically, her honorable reputation dramatically shifts when she becomes the victim of a humiliating act and is comforted by a man whom she has long tried to avoid. Unknown to Violet, her brother has recklessly gambled away her future during a poker game, while an anonymous benefactor valiantly, but unsuccessfully, attempted to pay off her debt.

Vance Everstone regrets his sordid past, a recent conversion to Christ has transformed his life; melting his heart of stone, for "Jesus Paid it All". Fascinated by the lovely Violet Hawthorne, Vance longs to protect her from evil forces far stronger than she can imagine. When the unlikely couple is forced into a hasty betrothal, both wonder if their marriage can survive undeclared love amidst such suffocating circumstances. Fortunately, attraction has bloomed, but will it be enough, for this fragile relationship may tragically disintegrate, before it even gets started.

Readers of the "Everstone Chronicles" will truly enjoy this outstanding addition to the series, for "The Cautious Maiden" displays author Dawn Crandall at her finest!

I am grateful to the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Be still my Everstone Chronicles lovin heart! The Cautious Maiden has to be the BEST ONE in The Everstone Chronicles series. From the opening scene to the ending one, my eyes were riveted, my heart engaged. Ms. Crandall is a master at historical romance!
This book has to be my favorite because it discusses temptation and overcoming a past. This is probably the first book in the series where I can say I actually knew what the hero felt in the novel. Even though Ms. Crandall writes from the heroines first point of view, she managed to give me a glimpse into the heart of Vance Everstone and I couldn't have been happier.

The Cautious Maiden is the first book I've read by author Dawn Crandall, and it will certainly not be my last! This is inspirational historical romance at its *sigh* finest.

A glowing mix of tender romance and mysterious intrigue, The Cautious Maiden swept me away immediately with skilled first person point of view and plenty of unique story twists and turns. Lovely, shy Violet and reformed rake Vance have a sweet chemistry that intensified with each page.

The Cautious Maiden is a true gem of a story, reminding readers that grace and forgiveness go hand in hand, and loving someone requires a step of faith. Bravo Dawn, for a thrilling and touching story I thoroughly enjoyed. Now to get the first three in this series!

I've been anxiously anticipating THE CAUTIOUS MAIDEN, the newest book in one of my favorite series, The Everstone Chronicles. Dawn Crandall has a unique writing style which lends a compelling voice to her characters. Her skills are once again manifested as she expertly transforms a former scoundrel into a believable hero and protector of feminine virtue without making him into a completely different person by reducing his passionate nature.

Poor Violet! In the wake of her grief she is lonely and not confident in her relationships, not feeling like she fits in anywhere. With her compromised reputation, she feels she has no other option than marriage, to whomever will take her. Her emotions and loyalties are being pulled on by various parties, and all she can do is try to follow her heart, which is difficult when she's not sure that she's wanted. It was frustrating to experience the limits of a woman's rights and choices during the time period, but Violet bore it with grace.

As much as I disliked Vance in the previous novel he appeared in (The Bound Heart), I appreciated his redemptive path and dedication to live his life on God's terms. I was skeptical at first, but as Violet comes upon him more than once studying his Bible, and witnesses his strength of character, his regrets and repentance, I began to hope that he would find happiness. His protectiveness of Violet, even against himself, is endearing and heroic.

Her brother was kind of ambiguous character- he only made an appearance in one scene, but so much of the plot revolved around his actions- placing his sister in danger, then damaging her reputation in an attempt to protect her; the physical separation between the two doesn't reflect his continued influence on her life. Because the story is told in Violet's voice, we only receive information as she does, which gave me a feeling of uneasiness and tension over the unknown parts of the plot I could sense.

The various members of the Everstone family make appearances as they gather for special events, but I missed seeing their personalities shine through while this book was entirely focused on Violet and Vance and their passionate relationship wrought with lack of communication, self-discipline, and dangerous circumstances.

Readers of Sarah E. Ladd and Elizabeth Camden will fall in love with this intriguing and romantic historical series!

Who would have thought that Vance Everstone would turn out to be a good guy?

This is the fourth book of the Everstone Chronicles. Vance is a character that was introduced in The Bound Heart. He was a character that I really did not like. (That may be an understatement!) This book shows that there is hope for everyone. Anyone can find redemption and forgiveness, even someone like Vance. :) He is the hero of the book. It is amazing what repentance and a contrite spirit can do for a person! To truly understand his character and the Everstone family dynamic, I would encourage everyone to start with book one, The Hesitant Heiress. This an amazing series and readers of Christian romance will love these books.

Violet is the female MC. She was introduced in the third book and I enjoyed getting to know her story and thoughts. She was a mystery and the woman behind the hotel counter. The full depth of her character and the toll of her brother's betrayal. I truly enjoyed her.

Dawn Crandall has become one of my favorite authors. I will look for anything and everything she writes in the future. She has an amazing talent at writing books in the first person. I could see a picture in my mind of her setting. I feel as if I am there with the characters, peeking in on their lives. I also feel as if I personally know her characters. They are people that I would want to associate with.

This is another winner. This book is a clean romance with kissing, innuendo, and violence.

Each book in this series has been better than the one before it and this book is no exception. Dawn Crandall has fast become one of my favorite authors and is now on my "must read" list. Her storytelling and writing are exceptional and make you feel as if you are part of the story. This entire series has been a quick read for me as I just can't put her books down.

I found this book to have more intrigue and suspense than the previous books in the series. Vance was a rogue so he needed a different type of story. Violet was the perfect match for him and watching them go from acquaintances to more was so much fun. I wasn't a fan of Vance in the earlier books in the series but seeing how he transformed himself into a respectable person was neat.

Dawn Crandall has a writing style that makes her books so easy to read. I just love the way the story flows easily from chapter to chapter. I often found myself reading "just to the end of the chapter" only to find that at the end of the chapter I needed to read more. I just had to find out what happened next. Her descriptions of places and people make the story seem genuine and add layers of authenticity. It is extremely easy to forget these are fictional characters.

If you are a fan of The Everstone Chronicles you are sure to love this book. This book would also be enjoyable to anyone who loves historical romance set in the New England region of the US. This book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone but is even more enjoyable when read as part of the series. Definitely a book for the keeper shelf!

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion which I have given.

I'm still absolutely amazed at how quickly and thoroughly I'm drawn into these books. I feel that I am a part of this story and that these characters are my friends.

I recently attended a book luncheon where the keynote speaker talked about how many romance books are full of love, hope, and redemption. Most readers want a happy ending because we want to believe that love conquers all. I'm also a firm believer that the most worthwhile things (and relationships) in life are best appreciated when they are worked for. This book proves these points exactly.

Violet's brother, Ezra, is pure evil and in a effort to escape his hand, she tries to make something of her life, only to be thwarted. Her struggles are real, scary, and dangerous, but she is one determined woman. As for her hero, the reader is treated to an interesting tale involving Vance. Vance, oh, Vance--the brother whom I love to hate. The older I get, the more I realize that it's impossible to judge someone and that people really can change...sometimes. Vance has quite a past that Violet must deal with and she must decide if he's trustworthy.

I love a good, clean, sizzling romance and this one delivers. I love the relationships, the banters, the appearances of past book characters, and the setting. This plot is driven by more than just romance and I love how it adds meat to the story, while still delivering those emotionally satisfying moments. For some reason, I love it when characters are forced to marry.

Content: some violence; mild romance (some mild innuendo, kissing, non-descriptive talk of past "sins"); mild religious elements. Clean!

A leopard may not be able to change his spots, but God can change the heart of any man who earnestly seeks him—Vance Everstone is that man. I was astounded by the metamorphosis which took place in the profligate whom I met in The Bound Heart. In turning to the Lord, Vance resolved to leave his Casanova ways in the past in order to secure a future with Violet. Crandall's focus on purity—over pinning or passions—paid huge dividends in my respect and admiration for Vance. Furthermore, I believe it opens the door to an audience of high school and college aged readers. Believe it or not, the chasteness of the characters cranks up the reader's anticipation of a "happily ever after" for the couple.

I enjoy this author's writing. With each book her writing has grown tighter, her plots more complex, and she's taken more risks with the human fallibility of her characters. In this story, readers get a period romance mixed with a bit of a mystery, and a dash of scandal in perfect measure. Having read all four books Dawn Crandall has published to date, The Cautious Maiden is my favorite—hands down!

Dawn Crandall has definitely mastered the art of writing in first person. The Cautious Maiden will have readers quickly turning pages and voraciously absorbing a touching and at times heart wrenching and raw narrative. Dawn out did herself with this read....even in this reader's mind...topped the great read The Captive Imposter. It's been fun reading how much people fell in love with Vance. He is quite the swooning hero. He truly plays the hero part in this story. I liked the heroine, Violet, just as much.

Dawn does an amazing job portraying the importance of purity in a relationship. She, through the characters, shows the importance of having boundaries and rules in a couples courtship. The story is such a beautiful one and gets across a great message with a captivating story.

This lovely read has romance, intrigue, mystery, and a deep faith message woven throughout that will appeal to readers across many genres. Dawn Crandall never ceases to amaze with her strong character appeal and powerful stories of redemption. Once again she has created a masterpiece of a novel readers will not want to miss.

" ' You really have changed your spots, haven't you? ' I said hoping to draw him out."
"You could say that, but it actually hasn't been me going the changing at all-only receiving the blessings of the change Christ has been doing in me." -Vance Everstone

I received this book from the publisher for my honest opinion which I have given.

It is a rare thing indeed to come across a romance that is as tender yet alluring as the one found in The Cautious Maiden. In a time rife with the social constructs of the Gilded Age, Violet and Vance grapple with both society and the complications of their own hearts. The exquisite tension in their interactions had me glued to the pages, and the realism of their doubts and fears touched me deeply. With superb character development and a passionate romance rivaled only by the strong spiritual message found within its pages, The Cautious Maiden is a wonderful addition to the Everstone Chronicles.

Once again I am won over my Dawn's style of telling a great story and the care and detail she gives the characters. I am so happy I found this series, I want to go back and read them all again! I honestly fell in love with the story of Violet and Vance and you will too, once she pulls you in its so hard to put these books down lol. Can we find a long lost brother or sister to keep the series going?!?

Ms. Crandall's Everstone Chronicles series has been highly recommended to me ever since book one came out, but for some reason I'd never tried reading one of them until now. Craziness! Because I really enjoyed this one! (And even though it's part of a series, I didn't feel that discombobulated reading book four first.) I've been a big fan of stories that take place in Victorian England for years, so that aspect of the novel was absolutely a plus in its favor. But not only the setting is wonderful, so are the characters! Ms. Crandall's writing swept me into Violet's story and kept me on my toes wondering where things would go next.

I enjoyed getting to know Violet. Her sweet and innocent personality make her very likable. She's a great mix of boldness and uncertainty. She knows when to stand firm in her beliefs, yet she's susceptible to her own insecurities. Although I will admit to feeling some frustration with her. There were times where some of the choices she'd make didn't seem to fit what I knew about her. And I wanted to reach in the pages and give her a good shake a time or two. Luckily she has Mr. Vance Everstone around! He keeps an eye out for her safety and boy oh boy does the tension fairly crackle between them. Get those two in close quarters and they are aware of no one but each other! ;)

I was intrigued with Vance from the beginning, just as Violet is, and I loved watching his layers peel back little by little. I had some speculation over what he may be thinking at different points, and sometimes I'd be right and sometimes not. Which is just the right amount of mystery surrounding the hero of the story! But what I loved best about him is how determined he is to overcome his terrible reputation and prove to Violet that he's a new man, committed to doing the right and honorable thing. This takes some tremendous self-control on his part because Violet is so completely unaware of the effect she has on him!

There were unexpected twists, a few predictable plot points, sufficient mystery and tension, and such swoony moments to make my shipper heart happy! The feels that Vance and Violet caused....I have no words, my friends. All I can say is you need to go read their story and find out for yourself! :D

First things first: the romance! "Marriage-of-convenience" goes through a new set of complications with the influence of outside characters. The chemistry between Violet and Vance practically screams from the page. It's electric while remaining sweet and era-appropriate. Violet's innocence is endearing, yet she also learns, no matter the best intentions, the importance of accountability and relying on God for strength to resist temptation. While never excusing Vance's past behavior, this story highlights our sinful nature and our need for forgiveness.

the-cautious-maidenHaving read the first 3 books in the series and knowing the depths to which Vance had fallen, he had to prove himself to me a little bit. And, to Violet. His character showed redemption above and beyond what I expected. (Something tricky to show with a singular POV not from his perspective) For all Vance's charms, his diligence and determination to show restraint with Violet are what really makes him an attractive hero. And, his obvious pursuit of a personal relationship with God and a fresh start.

The subtle suspenseful plot line added another layer of depth to the story. It offered a few surprises and something else to anticipate. And, it made the climax of the book quite exciting!

The story, like the previous books, is told from the heroine's perspective. Violet was instantly relatable and interesting from page 1. She is so forgiving, yet she still questions her self-worth because of her belief that her social status/family scandal hangs over her. As she matures in the story, she recognizes that her trust should be in God, her ultimate Protector.

The thing I appreciate most about this series is its common theme through all 4 books: finding true identity and worth in God's arms. With honest characters facing real struggles, Dawn Crandall has portrayed stories of romance, redemption, and purpose all pointing to the greatest Love, the love of God for his children.

Thank you to Whitaker House publishers for providing a complimentary review copy. My honest opinion is expressed in this review.

My endorsement:

Stepping into the world of a Dawn Crandall novel, readers better be prepared to have everything else fade away! As the fourth enthralling installment to the Everstone Chronicles, THE CAUTIOUS MAIDEN is definitely one swoon worthy novel that readers won't want to miss! The rich love story, as well as the powerfully deep, tender, and raw emotions of the interactions between Violet Hawthorne and Vance Everstone, are sure to enchant and delight.

Review:
Can I just say I absolutely LOVE this novel. I don’t know how else to say it. Dawn Crandall has an amazing talent in capturing her readers from page one and keeping their undivided attention until the end of the story. This is one of those books that readers will not be able to put down. Enter the enchanting world of Violet Hawthorne in Crandall’s The Cautious Maiden. Filled with delightful characters, a charming story, and of course the exquisite romance, readers will not want to miss this last installment in the Everstone Chronicles. I would highly recommend this book to readers that enjoy historical, romance, and Christian fiction.

This book is not only romantic, it has a beautiful message. We learn that people are not always what they seem from rumors and word of mouth. Getting to know someone for yourself is really important. Dawn has really hit the nail on the head with forgiveness in this book! Vance had to learn to forgive himself for his lifestyle that he was living before being saved, just as Violet has to learn to forgive and be okay with his past so that they can move forward together. This book was a great read and I can't wait to read it again! I loved the way Vance and Violet are thrown together in a whirlwind relationship, but I also enjoyed reading the way she breaks down the walls of a very closed off man and falls in love with him! I wish the ending had been drawn out a little more, but that could be because I didn't want the story to end!

I have to edit my review to add to it.

In The Bound Heart you learn all about the ugly side of Vance, which just left me wanting to know more about him and also made me root for him to do better and change! This book did not disappoint! I love that we had already met him at a completely different time in his life and I different time in his journey to find God. It really shows how far a person can come and change with the help of God. No one is ever too small or not good enough for the kingdom! Thank you for the beautiful transformation of hope from the ashes Dawn!!

The Cautious Maiden was one of those stories that when it was over, I wanted to turn right back to page one and start again! For that matter, I wanted to go back and read the entire series again. I enjoyed these characters so much!

Now I must make a confession…The Cautious Maiden, book four in the Everstone Chronicles, is the story of Vance Everstone and Violet Hawthorne. Here is my confession…I kind of wanted the author to kill off Vance in book two, The Bound Heart! I was so mad at him! But, I am very glad that the the author did, in fact, keep him alive. And not only that, his is a truly wonderful story of redemption! Now he is one of my favorite characters. It was fulfilling to see, in action, all the ways that Vance grew.

Vance and Violet had so much chemistry. I loved the way they interacted with each other and also just the general pace of the story. I felt like I was stepping back into their world again (as I did with the previous three books). The author captured the uncertainty that both Vance and Violet carried about their future, their worth, their attraction, and did a great job of capturing the time period that the novel was set in.

I received a compimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I've read all four of the Everstone Cronicles and The Cautious Maiden is by far the best yet! Dawn Crandall has a way of drawing you into the stories so that you feel like you are there. You can taste, feel and see the same things as the characters. Lots of romance, relative interaction, stress, laughter and danger can be found within the pages of this book.
After the death of Violet's parents, her evil brother takes over their home and turns it into a brothel. Violet flees and finds a job as the desk attendant in the hotel of a wealthy family. After her brother wages her in a poker game and loses, the stakes are high for her very safety. Her brother first has her beautiful long hair cut by an attack, then later puts her and the aristocratic Vance in a compromising position after they are attacked and drugged. There's nothing left for Vance to do but offer her a proposal of marriage, right after he has declared that he is not ready to get married for many more years.
All of this sets the stage for an interesting story that goes way beyond a simple proposal of marriage. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and a comfortable chair and get ready for an adventure like no other.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, which I have given.

I finished this book in less than five days, which used to be normal for me, but now is like reading at the speed of light (my reading time is so precious now that I've got married). But I could scarcely put Vance and Violet's story down!

Dawn Crandall has done it yet again with this intriguing tale set against the sweep of Maine and Boston. The backdrop is beautiful, the history perfectly set yet not intimidating to the main plot of the story: the romance between Vance and Violet.

Something I appreciate about Dawn's writing is the first-person point-of-view. This is a style I enjoy (and employ) the most, so I'm always excited about picking up Dawn's novels. Something else I appreciate? How she creates characters who are both relatable and yet never dull. They are always doing or feeling or studying or thinking something, and then we hit the middle of the book and I can scarcely keep track of it all or turn the page fast enough on my Kindle app, because I must know what happens next!

Which may sound a bit fan-girl-ish, merely because I am. So, readers of historical fiction, pick up this next book by Dawn Crandall. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy the story of the bad boy redeemed (Vance) and the girl who wins his heart!

This was the first book I read in this series and soon after I started reading I realized I should have listened to my gut and read them all in order. Oh well!
This book still reads well as a stand-alone, but reading the previous installments would bring a greater knowledge of the characters background and the whole Everstone family dynamic.
Now I have no choice but to read the previous ones! I want to learn more about this family.

I really liked this book! Dawn Crandall has such a nice way of placing the readers right at the center of her story. I loved the first person narrative which only let us know what Violet does, leaving us wondering the rest. For sure Vance is a complex hero and his transformation is really amazing! Unlike most romance novels, I felt both Violet and Vance were very believable in their relationship. They had their fair share of struggles and you'll have to read the book to know the rest! :)

I highly recommend this book! I still can't believe I hadn't picked up this series before!

Thanks to the publisher for providing me a copy of the book. It did not affect my review.
