If not for her protective wards, witch Melissa Carter would be dead at the hands of her enemy, shadow breed Hunter Galen. Now he's her prisoner. Though she tortures the powerful warrior with spells, he torments her with dark fantasies, inciting a forbidden lust too strong to deny.
Hunter must escape to complete his mission—destroy his father, who vowed revenge on him and his beautiful captor. But a warrior mates for life and now Hunter must protect Melissa—his mortal enemy and unlikely love. Doing so means descending into the underground world of the Darkken, a place so evil they might not come out alive…
Let me start off by saying that even though this is book number two in a series, you do not have to have read the first one in order for this one to make sense.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, this book had a unique premise and was well-written and nicely executed. I enjoyed these characters, both their stubborn and independent natures as well as them eventually finding out that they needed each other. There were times when I thought I knew exactly where the story was going to go only for the author to throw in an unexpected curve ball that took the story in an unexpected direction.
This story does contain elements of both romance as well as danger, and somehow managed to be perfectly blended. The story eventually comes to a head in a conclusion that was as surprising as it was fitting.
Overall, I am sure this story will appeal to those who enjoy a well written paranormal romance. I would read more from this author.

This is book 2 in the Shadow Breeds. Hunter was a minor character in a previous book by Shannon Curtis and now gets his own story. He is a paranormal doctor who can manipulate fire and needs light to stay strong. Melissa is a witch who is holding him prisoner for destroying her apothecary shop. When a vampire friend is hurt she offers him his freedom for saving the vampire. When he accepts he is drawn into a paranormal war that keeps shifting back to his past. A good read that doesn't require reading book 1.
Starbursts and sparkles everywhere. Want twists and unexpected turns that keep you awake turning pages... Then this us the story for you! Paranormal everywhere, action packed, love, hate, family bonds.... LOTS of excitement! I really enjoyed this story and want to see what other books Shannon had written.. I WANT MORE :) Due to sexual situations, this book is recommended for readers 17 and older! ARC received from Netgalley for an honest voluntary review.
Melissa Carter is a witch and she took Hunter Cole as a prisoner. Traditionally they have been on different sides and she feels justified in torturing him. Things change and they have to band together and fight his father who is determined to rule everyone with an iron fist. There are occasional moments where you have to maintain a suspension of disbelief but it was a fun read with characters I cared about and I would like to read more in this series.
I requested this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review back in November when I was in a PNR phase. I lost my mojo for a while but it’s back now so I finished it over the weekend.
This is the second in what I’m guessing will be a series. I didn’t read the first book but there was enough catch-up exposition in this that it works as a stand-alone.
At first I was reeeeally digging this book. I liked Melissa, the no-nonsense industrious witch who is keeping her would-be killer trapped in a dungeon. Carter, the would-be killer/monster-doctor is a “light warrior” who can use the power of light to heal or throw kickass fire bombs. Despite being locked away in a basement eating pb&j sammiches, he’s finding himself attracted to his captor, as is Melissa to her buff captive. Things go awry when, in a jam, Melissa needs Carter’s healing power and must make a deal with him.
Melissa starts off as an interesting and (dare I say it?) unique character. The premise is engaging and different and I was in. to. it.
After the conflict, however, it feels like the author just tried to superimpose the story on top of a cliché normal romance novel. All the cool characters and their characteristics were thrown into the bland machine and lost their edges. Carter (who was kind of bland anyway) became a goopy mess of a love-sick protective puppy and Melissa turned into a decidedly un-edgy altruistic blah. The whole plot lost its grit and became incredibly sappy.
For the parts that I liked, it still made a decent read but it wasn’t the great book it could have been.
