Modern Love #1

The Bartender

Rate this book
Who knew sleeping with the enemy could be this fun?

Was the one night stand a good idea?

Well, no. Probably not in retrospect.

In my defense I had just moved back into my grandparent’s house, I’d lost my dream job, and a guy on Tinder had stood me up. It was like life had suddenly stamped ‘LOSER’ on my forehead.

So when the guy behind the bar started giving me THE look… you know, the one that promised I’d be screaming his name into the wee hours of the morning? When that guy also has the perfect amount of scruff on his chiseled chin, biceps bulging out of his t-shirt, and a cocky grin you knew he’d earned in the sack… when he gives you that look, you don’t bother to figure out what your six degrees of separation are. You jump on that horse and ride it!

Pun fully and completely intended. And accurate by the way.

I fully admit to feeling sorry for myself and acting impulsively, but by the time I’d figured out WHO the bartender was, I was already falling for him.

(Note: Previously titled "The Bartender." Same great story with a fresh new look!)

Dedicated to all the ladies still looking for their very own unicorn cock. –Piper Rayne

Piper Rayne is the pen name for a writing duo that as of now are keeping their identities a secret, and the Bartender is their first novel. Once I read the blurb for this book, I pretty much knew I was going to enjoy it, but I never would have guessed how much! With the perfect amount of humor, steam, and heart, The Bartender easily exceeded my expectations!

Down on her luck, Whitney goes to a bar where she decides to use Tinder to find a guy to hook up with for the night. Waiting for pussylickr69 to show up, she captures the attention of the bartender, Cole, and he engages her in conversation. Cole is gorgeous and after many drinks when it becomes clear that she was blown off by her “date,” she winds up going home with him.

Waking up in his apartment the next morning, Whitney realizes she can’t remember anything that happened after she arrived. Completely mortified by what she may or may not have done in her inebriated state, she leaves with the intention of never laying eyes on him again. However, fate has other plans. One of her best friend’s, Tahlia, is getting married. It turns out Cole is Tahlia‘s fiancé, Chase‘s, brother, aka the guy that stood her up for a blind date once upon a time. What happened after she left the restaurant where they were supposed to meet that night altered the course of her life, and she has always blamed him for it.

Infuriated with herself for thinking he was a good guy, she decides she wants nothing to do with him. That may have worked out for her if she and Cole weren’t supposed to be the maid of honor and best man at Tahlia and Chase’s wedding. Whitney and Cole get tasked with a series of duties that they need to complete for the bride and groom. Being the good friend that she is, Whitney keeps the Cole drama to herself, because she doesn’t want to stress out her friend.

After spending lots of time with him, Whitney begins to think that she may have misjudged Cole altogether. He’s not the same guy he used to be, and did I mention he is smoking hot? They genuinely enjoy each others' company, and the sexual tension between them is palpable whenever they are together. So, what do you think happens next? If your mind is in the gutter, not only are you my kind of girl, but you are right! The only problem is she still holds him responsible for one of the most devastating things that has ever happened to her. Will she ever be able to move past that to give them a chance at something more?

Did I enjoy it? Hell yeah! It was funny without being cheesy or over the top, sweet but not enough to activate my gag reflex, and had just the right amount of steam… well I mean I wouldn’t have objected to just one more sex scene. Haha! Whitney and Cole’s romantic relationship was the focal point of the story, but we also get a lot of awesome moments between Whitney and her friends, Tahlia and Lennon, who thankfully will be getting their own books soon. The end of this book sets up one of said books quite nicely, and I can’t wait to get my greedy little hands on it!

Entertaining, funny, sweet, and steamy, The Bartender is a fantastic read! I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to any romance fan. The writing is addictive, the characters are endearing, the story is well paced and interesting, and there is a magical unicorn cock involved, people!

In short, if you like romance, go one-click this bad boy right now! Read it, and love it! Tell your friends, and then one of you sign up for an arc of the next book and buddy read it with me! :D If you still aren’t convinced, I will leave you with this lovely little tid bit for your consideration.

“I’m going to join you for another as well.” He gets up off his bar stool and before walking away he comes to stand directly behind me. “Assuming you want me to stick around?”

His breath washes across my neck and my ear and I close my eyes for a brief moment to enjoy the sensation. “I’d like that,” I say with all honesty.

“Good. I know the first guy let you down, but don’t worry ….. I’ve been told I lick pussy like a boss.”

And with that, he walks away while I struggle to keep my heart from pounding out of my chest.

I’m out of my league with this guy. I know it and there’s a good chance that he knows it, too.

But ask yourself this, ladies…if you were called up to the big leagues from the minors, would YOU say no?

📚 𝐃𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐜𝐤. 📚

Whitney returns to live with her grandparents and feels like a loser. Luckily, her best friends Lennon and Talia, live in the city and now they can hang out. 🎉
This trio made me burst out laughing! I want to be their friend - especially Lennon's who is a crazy version of Samantha from 'Sex and the City'. 😜

📚 “𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝. 𝐌𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧.”
“𝐎𝐡, 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲. 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐭?”
𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐬. “𝐒𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐭, 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐲. 𝐈 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐲.” 📚

But when Talia announce she's getting married and Lennon starts a sex toy business, Whitney feels that her life is falling apart... so she decides to do something crazy and downloads Tinder. But even pussylickr69 stood her up, so she gets drunk with the handsome bartender and goes home with him. 🔥

Watney wakes up in a foreign bed and remembers nothing. She runs away, because they will never meet again... but fate has other plans. They meet at Talia's engagement party and to her surprise, the hot bartender is Cole Weber, Talia's future brother-in-law and the person she hates the most! 😂
Cole was supposed to go on a blind date with her a few years ago - and never showed up. What happened next, changed her life forever... and he's to blame. 😬
What did he do? Will she be able to forget and forgive? 😱

📚 “𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭. 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞.” 📚

God, I laughed so hard!!! I finished half of the book in what felt like a few minutes! 😂😂😂
Although the characters did not have much depth, but Cole was a great male character. He's sweet but dirty and knows exactly what he wants.
Whitney though? Hmmm... The whole book I was waiting to find out what he did to her. I swear I expected the worst... but when the secret was revealed, my interest in the plot began to disappear. 🤦‍♀️
The resentment she held against him was ridiculous (girl, are you serious?!) and the drama at the end was so unnecessary... and that's SUCKS!!! Because up to 75% - I had so much fun!!! 😭
Maybe I'm just exaggerating - but because I enjoyed it so much, I had high expectations...

This is the first book in the series, each book about a different friend from the trio. All in all, this is a witty, sweet and hot romantic comedy. 💘

4.5 heart warming, sexy stars!

Author duos are TAKING OVER and the newest kids on the block Piper Rayne are a match made in bookworm heaven! The Bartender is a bloody brilliant debut novel!

I was so surprised by this book, on the outside, the Bartender looks like a fun, flirty rom com! Which it is. But, it also goes deeper. Cole and Whitney develop a beautiful friendship after Whitney initially dislikes him, their friendship is one that blossoms, filled with lust and heat. Anyone who's anyone knows I LOVE a good friends to lovers romance, with a bit of added hate in there and this book TICKED ALL MY BOXES.

Cole is fantastic! He's deep and intense. He's sexy and sinful. He's dirty but oh, so delicious. And he drove himself straight into my heart!

Whitney makes up the FAB THREE. My nickname for the secondary characters that are introduced in this book. Despite initially struggling to connect to Whitney, I ended up really liking her in the end. Alongside Whit is, Lennon and Tahlia, they are a sisterhood I'd love to be apart of and I cannot wait for the next books to get their stories too.

The Bartender is a beautiful romance that will make you laugh, swoon, and just feel!

Whitney Knight is back home and living with her Grandparents. Broke and brought low by her less than stellar choices, she decides she needs a little somethin' somethin' and sets up a TINDER date at a bar.

While waiting Whitney strikes up a conversation with the smokin' hot bartender. When it becomes apparent she has been stood up the two continue the evening back at his place.

The next morning Whitney can't remember a thing and hightails it out of there before Mister Smokin' Hot gets back. Little does she know that their paths are going to cross again soon and things are about to go from embarrassing to complicated.

I really loved this one. It was SUPER cute. It was well written. It had a nice pace to it. It had humor. It had great secondary characters (both BFF's will be getting their own books soon). It was fairly low angst with no OW/OM drama.

Both main characters were very likable. Cole was a sweetie. A former asshole and manwhore he was total book boyfriend material in this one. He was very all in right from the start. Whitney was a great heroine. Funny and sweet. I understood her reluctance and anger at Cole at the beginning. First impressions are HUGE and the one he left with Whitney wasn't the best. I'm glad though the hostility Whitney had towards him didn't drag out.

Overall a fantastic read and I can't wait to get my hands on the next two books in this series. Two thumbs up from yours truly.

Overall Opinion: I think I was expecting a little bit more from this tbh. It doesn't get into the characters all that much, and I didn't feel their connection all that much either. Did I get that they were hot for each other? Yes, but that wasn't the problem. I felt like we didn't experience the development of their feelings at all because there were a few time jumps during those times. The H's big secret reveal was kind of eye roll inducing, but I get that we needed something for a conflict. The ending was also lack luster and left me feeling underwhelmed. Just kind of meh...

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Whit and Cole's story. They meet in a bar one night when Whit is stood up by a tinder hook-up. She wakes up the next morning in his bed extremely hung-over, and she takes off before she has to deal with him. They meet again and are thrown together in an unexpected way. There is some friend and family drama, some sexy times, and some ups and downs for the couple...but they do get a HFN ending.

POV: This was told in Whit's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Ok until the abrupt ending (see closure section below). I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well otherwise. The time jumps did have us skipping over some important things though IMO.

Instalove: No. Instalust? Yes

H rating: 3 stars. Cole. He was ok. He was kind of hot at times, but kind of meh others.

h rating: 3 stars. Whit. She was ok. I did feel like she was a little dramatic with her grudge at times.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Not really

Closure: This had not very good closure for me. It ended right after the big conflict was resolved, and we don't get any time with them as an outed couple. I also felt like I had some unanswered questions. I would call it a HFN ending

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most readers

This was one wacky, drama-filled, fun-having example of RomCom!

What I Liked:
❃ the camaraderie between the BFFs. Whitney (the main character), Lennon and Tahlia had an enviable friendship, filled with love, loyalty and laughter.
❃ the way the humor was injected into the story. It wasn't obvious. The phrasing of each scene is what brought the chuckles out and made it easy for me to imagine what was playing out from the words.
❃ everything that had to do with Cole! Although we don't get his POV, his character still found ways to amaze me and I just wanted so much more of him.
❃ what I'm sure was the lead-in at the end to The Boxer. Can't wait!

What I Didn't Like:
❃ Whitney was petty. Honestly, the hate and resentment she held towards Cole was ridiculous. So because of that I didn't like nor respect the way that she treated him for the first half of the book.

Overall, there were doses of humor and love throughout the story with some drama thrown in to spice things up!

Release Date: February 1, 2017
Genre: Romantic Comedy
POV: Heroine - 1st person
Steam: 4 out of 5
Book Type: Standalone, but I do imagine there will be some crossover in The Boxer

The beginning of this book did start out a big rough but be sure to stick with the story! I think part of it is honestly just two authors trying to find their jive as a duo while writing together. Once the hero and heroine met, I started enjoying this story more.

Lennon raises her glass and we all follow suit. “May we get what we want. May we get what we need. But may we never get what we deserve.”
We all laugh and clink our glasses together.

Now, what kind of fun is a book of it doesn't give you any life lessons? Piper Rayne gives us a few gems that I'd like to share. ;)

"Never let it be said that a dick pic can’t bring two people together."

"I think of dimples as being the key to the chastity belt."

^ True story.

One aspect that I was really looking forward to but that I found lacking was the whole enemies to lovers trope. This has always been one of my favourite indulgences so I was ready to gobble it up like warm chocolate chip cookies. I was a little disappointed though. I get that the heroine, Whit, had some past issues with Cole, but they never actually hated each other. Or at least you don't feel Whitney hating Cole. And on the flip side, he had no idea and never harboured hard feelings towards her. Because of this, I wouldn't exactly classify this book as an enemies to lovers. Was it enjoyable? Yes! I just felt lead on.

Cole is a cheeky bugger! I really loved this about him. His personality was cute and I loved how playful he could get, much to the chagrin of Whitney. Even more surprising though was how tender and sweet he was with the heroine, especially at those unexpected times. Cole definitely made me sigh out of happiness.

“When someone who’s supposed to love you treats you as if you’re disposable, it’s difficult not to see your value as less than nothing.”
Cole squeezes his eyes together like I’ve caused him physical pain. When he opens them, he pulls back just enough to pin me with his stare. “You are so much more than nothing, sweetheart. You’re the opposite. You’re everything.”

I really liked Whit's character. Not only was she strong and sassy, but she could hold her own too against Cole. It was those tiny moments though when she left herself be vulnerable with him that really showed how complex she was.

Did I buy the romance -- I guess? But after all the talk of Cole being a manwhore and a flake, none of that is then shown in his actions. I kept expecting it of him and didn't know how to take his character when he was actually sweet and charming. I couldn't figure out whether I thought it was an act or if it was genuine and they had all somehow mistaken his motives.

It's possible I could've been the only one with this sort of feeling, but while reading I just felt like something was hanging over my head. Everything was too clean, too sparkly. I felt like I was sitting here, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Anyone else?

“Sometimes things just happen—good and bad—for no other reason than they just do.”

I'm really not sure how to feel about Lennon. Truth be told, she was a tough pill to swallow at times and I'm not sold on her. As a side character, her abrasiveness could've been toned down a little to try and keep the focus more on the main couple, but I get that the authors are also trying to set her up for her own story down the line.

My favourite part about The Bartender was probably the fact that I didn't guess what the conflict was and I was kept on my toes. I had no clue what would happen or how each character would react to the situation and that's what makes it fun! I had my suspicions close to, but based on most of the story, this is NOT how I predicted things to explode. Well done, Piper Rayne! My favourite hobby is guessing plot twists or conflicts and you two got me. ;)

One thing I did notice though was that after the conflict, the ending felt rushed. It seemed like just because the conflict happened then every thing had to be wrapped up neatly in a tight little bow immediately. I understand finishing up the story but based on the pacing of the book, it seemed crammed.

“You are something else, Miss Knight.”
I grin. “Well, thank you, Mr. Webber.”
“I’ll be getting mirrors installed in my bedroom. On every surface.”
I laugh.
“It’s cute that you think I’m joking.” He leans forward and places a chaste kiss on my mouth.

Along the same lines, Cole was completely validated, don't get me wrong. I understand the motives behind everything that happened (his and Whit's) and I appreciate them. However, I am a giant sucker for grovelling. Your man did something wrong? It's going to take more than an apology and dimples to sway me. Especially if it's something as big of a deal as this. I like the romantic approach that was taken to the whole situation but again, it just felt really easy and I expected more.

There were a few inconsistencies that I noticed within the story but this could be something as simple as needing another set of eyes to do one final proof. Or these could've been caught and edited after ARCs were sent out, I'm not sure, but this in no way affects my rating. Either way, they were minor and not extremely noticeable, I just tend to read and go over a book with a fine tooth comb. It's still an enjoyable read and I would recommend to a friend! Can't wait to see what happens next in The Boxer!

"I’ve always prided myself on standing on my own two feet and this man would bring me to my knees."

This was definitely a fun, quick and easy read, but I really liked that it wasn't just fluff. Along with the banter and sexiness between the sheets, there was depth to the characters and it was unleashed in a tender way. This brought out a different side of both Whit and Cole while still enjoying their quick quips and joking manner. Look out for the next instalment from Piper Rayne, coming March 2017!

Meh...

It was pretty boring, frankly. It had its good moments, true, but I expected a lot more. The reviews and the GR rating is awesome, so I wanted to find the "awesome" as well.

Ah well, hopefully next one is better!

For a book that promising unicorn, it ends up with no unicorn at all. The story, the characters, the plot, the twist and drama.... it seems ordinary for me. Mayne because i read so many romance books, that i do not feel anything unicorn.

Dont get me wrong. I like the book OK. But i wish there is more. And the climax that happening in the story is sort of meh. The conclusion of that climax is also flat and rushed.

Overall, i like this book OK.

4 STARS!

☾So let's just talk about how the title of this book is "The Bartender" and Cole isn't even a bartender¿ BUT it's all good here because he mine as well be! I read this book just in time for Valentines Day and am happy I did!

☾Cole Webber comes from a rich and wealthy family, meaning that he is expected to partake in the family business just like his brother. Too bad he has a passion for something else and can't seem to get his father to see things his way.

☾Cole meets little old Whitney at a bar when she just gets rejected from a guy on a dating app. She's rather desperate and ends up going home with him without realizing who he is. Her best friends, hubby to be's, brother - damn that was a mouthful.

☾While Whitney wants to reject the feelings she has for Cole and pretend he doesn't exist, she's stuck planning her friends wedding with him. Yeah, A W K W A R D. Now what's a good book without a nice revelation and confrontation? This book!! Gosh, the end was kind of predictable but written really well so I didn't mind ;) I urge you to read this sometime during the duration of the Valentines Day holiday, it's a fun and easy read that will bring your spirits up!

This is a sweet romance book.

The characters are cute, though not having enough depth. Still, they are OK.

There is low angst and very little drama.

This is the first book in the MODERN LOVE series and the next two books are about one of the friends of the main character Whitney (Whit) here in Book 1.

We meet Tahlia, the heroine in Book 2 and Lennon, the heroine in Book 3 here and if you want to read the other books in the series, my advice would be to start with this one.

The Bartender (he is not a bartender, by the way :) is a fun, hot and light romance of 220 pages, told by 1st person point of view only.

It is a nice pastime. Although there are no big problems in it to criticize, there is nothing very special about it, either... Just readable for a change of mood!

Safety: No cheating between the main characters, no triggers at all.

Ending: HFN

I guess we will see the couple of the first book in the next two books along with the main characters because although they are happily living together at the end of Book 1, there is no wedding or children yet!

I am more than OK with this ending... Who knows it is forever even if there is a wedding and children afterwards? However, if you need a wedding and children, for your happy couple, then, beware that there is no such thing at the end of Book 1.

I completely adored this book. It was so well written and although it was mostly sweet it had the perfect amount of angst, drama and sex to keep me flipping the pages as fast as I could read them. I was hooked from the first page and I couldn’t get enough of the characters.

There was so much going on in this story but the authors wrote it so well that I never felt like I couldn’t keep track of it all. I was so intrigued to find out what had happened to lead them to where they were today that I spent the whole book trying to figure out where each of the little breadcrumbs I was given were going to lead me.

Since this was written in only Whit’s point of view it was hard to tell exactly where Cole was at and what he was thinking making it was easy to understand how Whit could doubt his feelings. Add in their past encounter and Whit’s current life trajectory and I completely understood her lack of confidence. That said she wasn’t at all whiny or self-pitying and her sense of humour and relationship with her two friends made for a very entertaining read.

Cole was a mystery for most of the book. I mean he did sweet things and he seemed to be very open and invested in the relationship with Whit but not being inside his head or him coming straight out and saying what he was thinking and doing made it hard to know for sure. However, he really did step up at the end and make sure everyone knew how he felt and make amends for past mistakes.

And the way that the next story was teased and incorporated into this one has me waiting with bated breath for the next one

The Bartender is entertaining and hilarious!

For those of you who love romantic comedies, then you'll easily enjoy this book. The character dynamic was very intriguing and relatable. The intense and realistic situations made the story very engaging; and the relationships between the characters brought a personable feel to the book.

But....in my honest opinion, for more than half the book, I just did not like the heroine's character. She came across as immature and blamed others for the poor decisions she made. But once she finally pulled her head out of her butt, and finally opened her eyes, she was much more tolerable. And it seemed like there was too much unnecessary BS going on between the characters.

Overall, I thought this was a good story. Could it have been better? Sure. Could it have been shorter, allowing the story to flow better? Maybe. But this is just my opinion. No story is perfect, and this book only makes me more interested in the books still to come.

4 UNICORN CROWNS

The debut novel from Piper Rayne is light, quick, and fun, with a dash of steam. From the characters to the plot, it is enjoyable and will provide readers with entertainment from the first to the last page of the novel.

What is most enjoyable about this book are the three friends, Whit, Thalia, and Lennon. The friendship between these ladies, the support fr each other, and the humor among them is one of the best part of the book. Not only did it make the book that much more enjoyable, it makes me excited to get Thalia and Lennon's story, especially Lennon. She is going to be a wild one to tame.

The relationship between Cole and Whit is sweet. There is plenty of steam from them when they come together, but there are plenty of moments where they are just together and getting to know one another. More than this, the couple is low angst, which is often refreshing in high drama or high angst stories. Are their conflicts? Yes, but surprise, surprise, they settle them like rationale adults. I love them all the more for this reaction.

This debut novel for the newest secret writing duo, Piper Rayne, is delightful. The perfect escape from the chaos of the world.

This wasn't what I expected, but still pretty awesome!!

First I thought huh that isn't what the blurb said, but the further I got the more it became clear. The blurb said from enemies to lovers, but my view on enemies is totally different from the authors. So enemies is taken a bit on the light side. But I get where they are coming from. In the beginning they say there is a prequel but they recommend reading this one before "The Brush-off" and now that I've read it. I can honestly say read this one before that, I hate Cole in "The Brush-off" he's such a ass in that one. In this one they can convince you that he is the good guy and if you read the other one before I think it would be harder to convince you of his nice ness?

It's a read filled with fun, drama, drinking funny cocktails, Unicorn C*ck, hotness, steamy sex. I was really looking for a dirty mouthed, caveman, ALPHA, but that wasn't what I found in this one! Even though Cole was dirty mouthed.

Title: The Bartender
Author: Piper Rayne
Series: Modern Love #1
Genre: contemporary erotic romance, humour
Themes: enemies to lovers
Heat: 3/5
Rating: 2/5

From the synopsis, this looked like it was going to be a steamy, hilarious romp, but unfortunately it left me feeling a little cold. Although the sex scenes were pretty enjoyable, including some atypical scenes for a contemporary erotic romance (titfuck, anyone?), I just didn't really get into this book. It didn't make me laugh; the most was a small smile every so often, and despite the writing style being really strong and pleasant to read, I have to admit I found this more of a chore than I wanted to.

I didn't particularly like any of the characters, with their inability to take responsibility of their actions, and also their intentional deception of one another which led to easily-avoidable drama. I find it terribly frustrating when forced drama and angst is used in books, as it just detracts from everything I've read and destroys any relationship I've built with the characters. None of the characters were developed enough for my liking, and honestly too much of it felt forced, with angst, humour and relationships.

It was fun, it was light, it was fairly hot; but overall it just didn't appeal to my sense of humour or my craving for a bit more depth.

Cute and straightforward.
No fuzz.
A good glow, decent plot. Just very basic.
Good if you just want to chill, and add a little bit of spice.

The girls trio was very dynamic and I loved how 3 different personalities fit so well.
I also could relate to our FMC.
The part about needing to feel secure when it comes to money and being extra careful with letting people in.
That spoke to me.

Read: 22/05/2022
1st rating: 3 stars
Genre/tropes: Contemporary romance
Cover: 3 stars (such a warm embrace1its low key romantic)
POV’s: Single 1st person (Whit)
Will I recommend: Yes, but for something light.☺️

I swear to god I have no idea why I even bother reading trashy romance novels anymore. I swear 90% of them are based just on sex and no relationship at all is formed. I'm so over that. Why can't we romanticise a healthy relationship that has good communication as well as sex? That would be so much better than all of these books solely focused on sex.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way and my giggles under control, I feel better! Welcome to my insane review of 'The Bartender' by Piper Rayne. First, I don't know who Piper and Rayne or Rayne and Piper or Piper Rayne are, but they are funny as sh!t! I laughed out loud, snorted and even wheezed while reading this book.

Then I actually took a deep breath and sighed because... well, this. "Just because you don't know what you're missing doesn't mean it didn't leave any scars." <---- You guys! This made my heart go pitter patter! I mean from the #unicorncock, to all the feels! Piper Rayne may just have jumped to a must read on my list.

Let's talk about falling in love with the enemy. No one wants to do it, hell most of us will fight it like crazy. I mean when the resident a$$h@t shows up at our doorstep why not give him a swift kick in the #unicorncock so there aren't anymore baby a$$h@t's in the future. But nooooo! In this case it was all about what happens when Whitney doesn't do this.

If you're a lover of romantic comedy that will make you laugh so hard you pee your pants, with a bit of feels thrown in, this is just the book for you! Or me. Or my friends. You get my drift. I'll be sharing the #unicorncock love with all my reader peeps!

This book was a ton of fun to read. It was witty and sexy and really heartwarming when it needed to be. I loved Cole's character tremendously. He may have been labeled a man-whore, but he is anything but on the inside. And Whitney was so strong and sassy that I couldn't get enough!

The story is a little weird to call enemy to lovers because no one really hated each other. At least it didn't show in the story-line like that. Yes, they have history, but it wasn't a hateful past. I don't know, maybe that's just me ... I'd call this more of a second chance to get it right kinda story.

I'm really looking forward to moving ahead with this author duo in The Boxer & The Banker. Their writing flows easily together and makes for a very good team.

This is an author that came highly recommended by a friend who love their books. I’m not sure I would have tried it without a push.

I did like Whitney and Cole. They both have some family issues, but they have some great chemistry. Whitney’s friends were interesting and all admittedly opposite from each other.

Plot wise, it was decent. There’s a lot of backstory and that took some time to unfold and be out in the open. And even with all the time spent between Whitney and Cole, it still felt like I didn’t know them very well.

Overall, it was a quick read with characters who were fairly easy to root for. I’m mildly interested in the other books and might read them eventually.
