Fleeing the wrath of Skelkra and carrying his child, Klawdia embarks upon a quest with Margan and Jeykal to rescue Sheyla from the brutal Bones pirates.

Their voyage to Pirate’s Landing is fraught with danger, and as Jeykal turns spiteful and Margan exhibits a strange dark side to his Speaker abilities, Klawdia begins to wonder just who she can rely on.

Impassable peaks and vicious, bloodthirsty nightmares still separate Klawdia from her freedom to the south, but as jealousy and anger bubble amongst erstwhile friends, she realises the worst dangers might not be ahead, but standing at her side.

Great continuation of the story of Klawdia as a spin-off from KJ's Healter's series. The thing I love about KJ's writing, is she does not spend half the book catching you up to where she left off at on the previous book. She doesn't really recap at all, so I would highly recommend reading (or re-reading) the other two Klawdia books before starting this one. I unfortunately did not do that; which caused some confusion for the first part of the book. I know she has her reasons for why she constantly flip-flops between referring to Marghan by name, then just the Speaker, but I swear I spent the first chapter of the book thinking there were 4 people in the boat; not three. Then proceeded to feel like an idiot for not catching on sooner, for rest of the book.

I highly recommend these books because of the unique twists and turns that KJ takes in her writing. She's one of the few authors right now who can keep me guessing what will happen next. I think that despite not ever having children in her personal life, she did a superb job of reflecting the progression of Klawdia throughout her pregnancy. She nailed it with the influx of emotions, changing hot to cold without much of a reason and as a result lashing out or making amends with friends, significant others, and strangers alike. As a woman who's now 16 weeks pregnant, it's easy to connect Klawdia's behaviors and struggles with real life. I will also say that after reading the intimate scenes between Klawdia and Marghan, I KJ should definitely add more of these scenes to her books or better yet, branch off and give us a steamy smut novel. Just sayin.

I also enthusiastically applaud her for never taking the easy road in a story just to give a happy ending. I feel she truly evolves her characters in their natural process without forcing them into decisions she (or consequently the reader) would want them to make. I've read so many mainstream books right now that are quick, easy reads that are so predictable and take the reader exactly to where they want to end up at the end of their books that it's refreshing to return to an author who keeps you hanging on and needing to hear what will happen in the next book in the series. I know KJ truly takes her time to develop her characters and pours her entire devotion into a book before publishing. This allows her to develop complex characters, new species, and even new worlds that make you yearn to learn more.

A thrilling and emotionally charged journey through danger, loyalty, and betrayal.

Savage by K.J. Colt is an epic continuation filled with raw emotion, harrowing adventure, and deeply layered characters. Klawdia’s journey pregnant, vulnerable, yet fierce pulls you in from the very start. As she sets out with Margan and Jeykal to rescue Sheyla from the savage Bones pirates, every page feels like a test of strength, trust, and resilience.

The tension between the trio is masterfully written. Jeykal’s spite and Margan’s mysterious Speaker powers add layers of suspense and unpredictability. You can feel Klawdia’s inner turmoil as much as the looming threats from the outside world.

K.J. Colt doesn’t hold back the dangers are real, the stakes are high, and just when you think the worst is behind them, you realize the true threat may be the people standing closest.

Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy with strong female leads and complex, morally grey characters. Can’t wait to see where Klawdia’s path leads next.

Great read

The Klawdia series is a great story that reminds me why I love the genre so much. It brings me back to my youth and the wonder of reading that takes you from all your present worries and the glory that storytelling can bring.

KJ Colt's book are always very good. They are real page turners. I particularly liked this one because it talks about the story of Margan, who has always been a real mystery. You finally find out what happens when his eyes start to turn red. I'm still trying to figure out how he ended up being able to read human minds though. I think that Colt could have gone into more detail about that. He was trained for what appeared to be a minimal amount of time and he was so far removed from the ancient bloodline.... Story is great regardless.

Synopsis (from Goodreads): Fleeing the wrath of Skelkra and carrying his child, Klawdia embarks upon a quest with Margan and Jeykal to rescue Sheyla from the brutal Bones pirates.

Savage is the third book in the Klawdia series and I would highly recommend reading books 1 & 2 first as they include important information about the characters and the culture surrounding them. However it has been 18 months since I read Refuge (which is a lot of books in between book 2 & 3) and was able to pick up the important information quickly...either that or Klawdia really stuck with me as a character!) This review may contain spoilers for the previous two books.

As it had been so long since I read Refuge, I wasn't 100% sure what I was really expecting from Savage (other than adventuring goodness that is!) which actually probably meant I enjoyed the book more because the twists and turns were that bit more of a surprise. Like the previous books, this one really takes you on a story, and I don't know about anyone else but I was never too sure exactly how it would end.

Nothing came easily for Klawdia in this one, her love life was difficult and her adventure was difficult (and dangerous) but that helped her grow as a character. All through this book she had one main goal and that was keeping her unborn baby safe, and I loved that. It gave her a primary focus that really helped ground her and push her onwards.

It was also great to see a main character struggling to help someone else with their backfiring magic. Normally it seems to be the MC that needs all the help, but Klawdia is an independant character as it is and that wouldn't quite have sit right. Instead there was more of a focus on her helping and supporting other people.

This was fantasy with pirates, magic, mythical creatures and a fantasticly built world, definitely worth a read!

I was looking forward to reading this but was disappointed. I found Klawdia very unlikeable and could not relate to her despite just having a baby myself. I also think the relationships between the characters could have been more developed. Their conversations often felt unnatural.
