For those already 7 books deep into the Hellequin series, this first book of three Avalon Chronicles provides a welcome addition to the world. Switching the focus to newbie, Layla Cassidy, it blends the usual mix of faces with someone who comes crashing into the supernatural for the first time. Being set before Scorched Shadows, with the two follow ups dealing with its aftermath, Layla is going to have to deal with some serious changes, from her own inner struggles with spirits and demons, to becoming part of a wider war affecting multiple worlds and bringing magic right into every normals' front door. She's a good choice to temporarily replace Nate as our main narrator, punchy and determined, with a hint of vulnerability, but not enough to make her a total limp lettuce. The focus on her character also offers that extra bit of depth lacking in the recent Hellequin books, though the author's tendency to over explain everything is still here in force. An easy and fun read.

Oh, it was nice to see/hear the gang again! Even Nate made a brief appearance in the end! Yippee!! This has all the excitement and thrills of the Hellequin series but focused on a different direction. Same characters but adding some new ones that are really special! Wow, are they. I say, plural form because she has souls in her, she is more than just herself. She opened a scroll and she now has the powers of those souls that were trapped in the scrolls now in her. All their skills, knowledge, powers, etc. One is a demon, a warrior, an assassin, and it will that time to work things out. It is an exciting story with kidnapping, fighting, creatures like blood elves, ogres, and more!
Since the main character is the gal with the all the spirits, the narrator is female this series which makes sense and she does a fantastic job! She performs the voices for the ogres, men, and other such things and I never stopped and thought, "Oh, that is a woman", nope! Not once!. It was done so well, I didn't question, it just flowed nicely.

Layla Cassidy wanted a normal life. She kept herself hidden away from the lime light her serial killer father’s infamy brought. A Glimmer of Hope definitely had the snow ball effect for me. It starts out pretty dark, bloody and a bit slow to engage me but soon I found myself caught up the avalanche of mayhem, more murder and mystery… Ultimately, its not my kind of read but I completely appreciated McHugh’s ability to weave such a tale.

I was a bit reluctant to start this new series by Steve McHugh because I loved the Hellequin Chronicles and its main character Nate so much. I'm so glad I did, I loved this book as well! Fantastic new characters were introduced and some familiair faces show up as well. Don't worry, if you haven't read the Hellequin books you can easily start off here! (But you do really want to read Hellequin as well... trust me on this)

I'm always on the lookout for a new Urban Fantasy series to read, and when I read the blurb of A Glimmer of Hope I was intrigued. The thing with first books in a new series is, that there is a lot of information you have to take in as a reader. You are introduced to a new world and have to get used to the writing style of the author. I liked the beginning and was looking forward to seeing what would happen to Layla. She is attacked and brought in front of a mythical creature. From there on she is introduced to a new 'secret' world on earth. While she tries to escape she accidentally becomes a vessel for spirits, which includes having inhuman powers.
Around 35% I still hadn't been able to fully get into the story. There was a lot going on and the world didn't pique my interest as much as I thought it would. As a reader you are introduced to so many characters, which in my opinion slowed down the story a bit. However, the author came up with a very interesting and original world and story. I think the story will pick up more in the upcoming books, and I do want to find out what Layla will go up against next. I am also looking forward to seeing her grow as a character. So there is a high chance that I'll continue this series to see what the author has in store for us.

High octane action and pure fun. This is amazing right outta the gate. Hit the ground running and never stopped. Monsters, mythology, and ancient scrolls - I'm giving the author a high five here.
Layla Cassidy's life is forever changed when she stumbles upon an ancient scroll. She's now on the run and doesn't know who to trust or what to believe. The secondary characters are awesomesauce! Mr. McHugh does an astounding job of giving each of them uniqueness and depth. The monsters are detailed vividly, and you may see them in your nightmares. Layla is exceptional, and this is just the beginning of her journey.
I'm so excited to have a new author to read. This is the first in a new series, but a spinoff, so I can't wait to read them all. Paranormal and fantasy readers must read this!

A GLIMMER OF HOPE is a spin-off of McHugh's Hellequin series, although it seems like you don't really need to know anything about that series to understand this book. It started out slow for me, but eventually picked up the pace unraveling a complex magic filled world and interesting plot. I enjoyed the world building, the unique take on magic, and the central plot which became pretty interesting once the plot finally picked up its pace and stopped over explaining things.
Layla comes off as your typical tough urban fantasy heroine with a tormented past which at first had me feeling bored by her. But eventually she warmed to me as I enjoyed seeing how she handled being thrown haphazardly into a magical world just by touching something she shouldn't. After she is faced with her understandably scary new power she starts to show some more vulnerability and tenacity which had her her evolve slightly away from the generic urban fantasy heroine. Her powers are pretty cool and are a tad more complex then I had imagined they would be upon first impressions.
Like Layla, we learn that her powers are tied to a more complex plot that will be addressed in future books in this series. I enjoyed A GLIMMER OF HOPE well enough and it's a good, albeit slow start to an interesting sounding series.

The world was interesting, but the book was missing something vital.
The characters all fell flat for me. None of them were truly believable. I lie. Elias was believable. Everyone else felt one dimensional.

I love fantasy. I don’t mind violence. I’m ok with reading unbelievable things. But this....this is just too much for me. Totally not into it. And I’m not gonna force myself to be.

This arc has a lot of things going for it. It’s got a strong main character and starts off strong. There’s a villain POV and he’s a redcap. I liked how there were more monsters of fantasy in an urban setting, like redcaps and trolls.
Also the idea of a soul scroll was interesting.
But this book dragged after the halfway point. This book is set in a previously established world, and fans of the other series will like this addition to it. I’d recommend if you are in the mood for no romance urban fantasy.

This is my first experience with this author and what an absolutely brilliant introduction I had via Glimmer of Hope. Layla is the main character in this book, a woman who has problems trusting and accepting people in her life. She has a history and a story that is best kept secret, but she does have two good friends and she will need them as she discovers what this world and life holds in store for her.
Oh this book was a great read that hit all the right spots for me. An Urban Fantasy with a whole range of legendary, mythological and folk-lore characters and above all magic, spirits and demons. As Layla learns that there is more to her life than what she first imagined, she has hidden her past from others, but then others have also hidden parts of Layla’s past from her to protect her. She will discover that she does have a place and a role in life and believe when I say you don’t want to mess with her. The author has created a great mix of characters and has given enough details for the reader to see his “other” characters.
This is a fast paced, kick ass, saving the world, urban fantasy novel. I did think it had a bit of a feel of being aimed at a YA audience. I am looking forward to continuing this journey and read future books from The Avalon Chronicles, and also to start to read the Hellequin books. A great read that I would definitely recommend to those who like Urban Fantasy, Action and Fantasy genres, or a great start for those who want a bit of escapism.

She is going to university, making friends, working at depot ... But troubles find Layla anyway, and she accidentally activates an ancient scroll which gives her a new (inhuman) power.
A Glimmer of Hope is set in the Hellequin Chronicles universe -- with cameos from several key players from those series appearing here -- but with totally different main characters. If you're familiar with McHugh's books, like myself, I think you will be AS entertained with this one.
I thought Layla's background was interesting, and I enjoyed her finding the new power and worked out the kinks of dealing with spirits and demon. I also loved the people surrounding Layla; her newfound friend Chloe, as well as Harry, a 100% human but with brilliant mind in the matter of technology (go human power!). As I said, we had several cameos from Hellequin Chronicles, including Tommy, Diana, Remy, and Dr. Grayson. Nate himself makes a very short appearance, which gives a clue that this series sets before the event in Scorched Shadows.
New sets of villains, new sets of team, but same old ass-kicking, fast-paced urban fantasy. Again, if you're an old(er) fans of McHugh, I think you'll like it. If you're new to McHugh, you're in it for the ride.
Cannot wait for the next book, and luckily it seems to be released within this year as well. YAY!

Layla is in hiding; she is the daughter of a serial killer who is in jail. She seems to be living a pretty normal life except for the voices in her head that keep telling her to hurt people, but she keeps them in check (for the most part) because she is terrified of becoming like her father. She is kidnapped by Elias who wants to leverage her to get her father to work for Elias's evil boss. While trying to escape, she accidentally activates a spirit scroll and accepts their powers. They aid in her escape, but with her new power to manipulate metal and the new voices in her head, she is in even more danger of becoming a killer like her father. Elias that continues to pursue her, but she now has help in the form of Tommy, Remy, Diana, Chloe, and Casey. They help her come to accept her new powers and the world of magic.
I loved Steve McHugh's other series, so I had a pretty good feeling going into this one and wasn't disappointed. Layla is one tough character. She was a fighter before she even got her hands on the spirit scroll, so we knew she wasn't just going to do what Elias wanted. Boy did she prove her point there at the end! Plus it has some of my favorite characters from Nate's series (and even a little cameo from Nate too). I'm looking forward to seeing Layla join them in the next book.

This book was sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. I think this one was a fun read. It had the superhero undertones to it and it was cool getting to know Layla as a character and learn her origin story.
The dialogue did feel a little bit one dimensional at times but that didn’t really hinder the plot too much. It got gruesome at parts and I was here for it. I also liked the action scenes in this book. I wish they had a bit more detail to them but they highlighted the use of teamwork really well.
It was a good first book to a series and I’m looking forward to finding out where it goes in the next book. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes superheroes or books involving characters with powers.

I must confess I liked the Hellequin books a tiny tad more - but then I "only" really enjoyed the first and it was the sequels that had me fall head over heels in love with the series, and I think this one will be similar.
I really like the new main character - she is flawed and comicated in a way - but very believable and realistic in her actions and reactions. I loved her growing with her challenges and learning to accept what is happening around her!
The world is the same as in the Hellequin books, so there was quite some comforting familiarity and a lot of well known faces in this one, which made for a very easy transition into a new series!
Book one just came out two days ago, and already I can't wait for book two... If that isn't a recommendation, then I don't know what is! ;)

Every now and again I love a bit of escapism in a novel and A Glimmer of Hope ticked all the boxes.
Humans are in the minority in this novel. Instead it consists of a variety of monsters from a world that we have all heard about in our childhood. One of the few humans in the novel describes it as dungeons and dragons and I can’t think of a more apt description.
There are many characters, the kindle’s search facility did come in handy at first. Some are good, many not so good. All are willing to use violence, cause mayhem and face possible death for their cause. These characters are more likely to survive injury than humans but there are still ways to kill them. There are quite a few of them I am looking forward to knowing more about.
This book is the first in a series but there is no real cliff hanger ending like in other fantasy books I have read. I am looking forward to the next book though because I enjoyed this book a lot.

I am a big fan of the Helliquin series, and I couldn't wait for this book to be released. Thanks to Amazon Kindle 1st I was able to get it early. I read it in a day. I really enjoyed the book. The overlap with the characters in Nates series was a little confusing for me while I tried to remember the names of the teenagers. Overall the story progressed well. It was a little slow for the first couple of chapters while I was trying to place everything in the timeline of events with Nate. Overall I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one, and to see how this develops with the group has been causing havoc all over the world.

I read the synopsis for the book and went in with high hopes. The story line was interesting but it just missed the mark for me. I didn’t really like the characters and nothing about the story really pulled me in. Not to say it was bad, it just wasn’t for me. The book is action packed but I felt the story and character development was lacking.

Engaging story, complex characters, intense action...a strong start in this book one.
Fascinating, original characters, with interesting blend of timelines, past and future, cleverly weaved into a well written tale. I read Scorched Shadows, the last book in Steve McHugh's The Hellequin Chronicles at the end of last year and loved it so much I included it in my list of favourite books of 2017. A Glimmer of Hope is the first in his new series, The Avalon Chronicles which is set in the same world as the previous series but features new storylines and a new cast of characters.
Layla Cassidy has moved to Southampton to escape her past; from a young age her father taught her how to fight and protect herself but he was a vicious serial killer and she fears what his legacy means she may be capable of too. We've all had bad days at work but none quite so bad as the one Layla endures which results in several of her colleagues being brutally slain and Layla herself captured by a remorseless fanatic. She inadvertently activates an ancient scroll and discovers that she has incredible powers but to use them properly she will have to accept the three spirits and demon who now reside within her. As she is suddenly thrust into a world she had no idea existed, she is helped by some characters who will be familiar to readers of the Hellequin series. New readers needn't fear they will be left behind though; they learn alongside Layla as she discovers more about the history of the world she now knows she inhabits and becomes aware of the mythical beings she must now fight with and against.
The whole premise of this world is just wonderful, it's an alternate reality where it turns out that every myth is actually real. Gods and goddesses, sorcerers, witches, werewolves and ogres aren't stories, they exist and some of them want humans to not only become aware of their existence but to become subservient to them. This is a violent and frightening new life for Layla and I loved how she has two battles to face; she must fight against evil creatures who seek to destroy her friends and use her, while also contending with her internal demons - only one of which is an actual demon... Her gradual coming to terms with her strange circumstances is compelling, the darkness that lies within her hinting temptingly at future struggles she may face.
The action here is fast-paced, exciting and brutal but there's a wonderful humour throughout the book too. Layla's new friends might be powerful mythical beings but they are also a bunch of geeks and I loved the pop culture references throughout the book, including a quite brilliantly placed quote from Terminator 2. Layla's story is separate to Nate's but with the two series being set in the same world it was a real treat to meet up with some familiar faces, especially Tommy, Diana and Chloe. I was also thrilled to see the return of my favourite fox-human hybrid, Remy (admittedly the only fox-human hybrid I know but he's such a great character I'm sure he'd always be my favourite!) The events in this book take place just before Scorched Shadows and I'm fascinated to see how things will proceed for both our old and new characters in the future books in The Avalon Chronicles which take place after Hellequin.
A Glimmer of Hope has to tread a tricky line between setting the scene for a new series and being a thrilling adventure in its own right. It succeeds magnificently and honours the legacy of The Hellequin Chronicles while being a thoroughly entertaining and immersive urban fantasy novel in its own right. With its more youthful protagonist it does have a slightly younger feel to it and I think will appeal to YA fantasy fans who may have found The Hellequin Chronicles a bit too violent but it retains the sense of very real danger throughout and definitely isn't for the fainthearted. The ending sets us up perfectly for more despicable villainy, supernatural affairs and desperate heroics and I can't wait to discover what troubles lie in store for Layla next!

Urban fantasy with some mythical elements, garnished with action and a little bloodletting. It was sort of okay. The writing seems to have a YA tone to it, and the dialogues felt a little flat for me. The twist on the Arthurian narrative and folklore is interesting, and I hope that the characters are equally great to meld into the story.
Some parts of the book felt a little repetitive, especially the parts where Layla throws her tantrums towards her best friend. I didn't like her much in this novel, but, would love to see her grow. Apart from her, the supporting characters were more interesting, and MCHugh should also explore the demon/human bond angle in the story. The villain still remains at the sides, and I will read the second book just to know about his motives and powers. I would also love to see an interaction between Layla and her serial-killer dad.

I was surprised to learn that this was not Steve McHugh’s first book. I felt it was poorly written and that the story nor the characters flowed well.I'm thankful I didn’t pay for this book. I should’ve DNF it but I kept to it just to see where it went. Not worth it at all.

Great story in Nate's world.
Steve lets us meet Layla who is just starting her adventure in a brand new world. This story was filled with new and old characters that took us on an exciting ride. Thank you Steve! Can't wait to read the next one!

This is an urban fantasy with a richly developed world filled with a secret society that rules it all, werewolves, ogres, red caps, and other creatures pulled from mythology. Layla gets pulled into this world when she is kidnapped by Elias Wells, the red cap, and in an escape attempt bleeds on a scroll which causes her to inherit the demon trapped in it and the three other persons who previously held the scroll.
Layla has been laying low, attending university, and taking MMA classes. Her father is a well-known serial killer who was caught when she was fourteen. He taught her to fight and use weapons when she was a child. She loved him and felt particularly betrayed when his secret life came to light. She is one of the few people who know where he is imprisoned but has refused to communicate with him since his incarceration.
Layla has been building a safe life with just a couple trusted friends until everything is disrupted by her kidnapping. Now, she has to find a way to take control of her new powers which include the ability to control metal won't be easy since her demon is determined to take control of her and kill everyone she has ever loved. She is also feeling betrayed again because she learns that Chloe who has become her best friend was assigned to watch over her by this same secret society.
The book is stronger on world building than it is on character development. Layla seems to be particularly one-note until quite late in the book. Her desire not to unleash the anger inside her and her sense of betrayal are her primary motivations and are frequently referred to. Though the characters could be more well-rounded, the story does not lack in action. There are frequent battles as the good guys confront the bad guys. There is also some humor as Layla banters with her friend Chloe and her friend Henry.
Fans of action in their urban fantasy will enjoy this story.

Fantastic! I loved the Hellequin Chronicles. I was excited when this book came out! I got it as a Kindle First book. A great book set in the Hellequin Chronicles world. There are some continuing characters from that series but this book stands very well on its own. Layla and Chloe are wonderful! This is a must read!
