Stan Hope never cared much for his son-in-law—Justin Patko.
His black clothes and body piercings were bad enough, but the ridiculous notion of dragging Rebecca off to Broadway with a new baby on the way pushes Stan over the edge. How much can a father take?
After losing his cool at a holiday party, Stan gets a visit from three unexpected spirits. Can they help to change his close-minded ways?

Like the author’s other books, this is a unique twist on a classic Christmas story and is just as engaging as the original story and various adaptations I’ve seen/read.
The characters are easy to become attached to and enjoy or dislike through the emotions they draw out of us. What is really interesting is I actually felt for Stan in the beginning for feeling like everyone was turning against him. It’s one thing to know when a character is wrong, but causing the reader to emphasize with them while knowing they’re wrong makes the experience way more interesting than it would be otherwise.
My only problem with the characters is my own doing. I’ve been reading this series out of order (don’t ask, I don’t know why. Lol), so I didn’t get as much out of a couple of characters from previous books. I’m sure once I read those, I’ll pick up on what I missed the first time, so if you haven’t, I recommend reading these in order. It’ll only enhance this more.
The story itself is the author’s typical engaging, fast paced adventure and, like the original A Christmas Carol, can be read in a single sitting and bring out many of the same feelings and sentiments as the original.
In closing, I’d like to add this is now on my yearly December reading list. This is one story that’ll be fun to read over and over again.
A wonderful treat to revisit old friends! The original Dark Musicals Trilogy was my introduction to Author Laura Deluca, and although I'm a fan of all of her works, the Trilogy remains my favorite of her titles. So simply having an opportunity to read about the characters again was exciting! But when I started reading the story, I was lost yet again into the world Ms. Deluca crafted:)
The novella is told from the point of view of Rebecca's (main character's father) Stan. The story inspired by the classic tale of Scrooge unfolded with Rebecca and Justyn's old nemesis's as the guides! How ingenious! It was very entertaining watching Debbie and Livy as the Spirits of Past&Present, blending in their own personalities and quirks to help Stan better understand his actions and ways.
The Spirit of the future was extremely eerie to me, Ms. Deluca did an awesome job of painting that stark, foreboding atmosphere. I cannot give away any types of spoilers. But I truly felt despair and real tears sprang to my eyes while reading. In her normal fashion Author Laura Deluca threw a twist in the story that completely had me off kilter and horrified me! LOL. But she brough me back with hope!
Scrooged: A Dark Musicals Novella was truly a bittersweet experience of joy, sadness and hope. Ms. Deluca writing provokes all of these emotions in her writing. Not to mention the profound love between the two main characters left me breathless and envious:)
I will mention the characters are so very realistic Darlene, Rebecca, Justyn, and I got a new appreciation for feisty Mary (Rebecca's mom)...just wow loved it!
I also was excited about the couple's now adventure and addition and really I loved this book! I think this was a great way to recap what happened after the "Happily Ever After"— what happened next.
If you've never had a chance to read any of Ms. Deluca's work, (basically you can start with any of her titles and get drawn in...,lol) But I will suggest the Dark Musicals Trilogy.
As a huge fan of Laura's work and the Dark Musicals trilogy, I was excited to see a novella featuring some of my favorite characters. With a plot based on "A Christmas Carol", Laura turns the spotlight on a character we didn't get to know all that well during the trilogy: Rebecca's father, Stan.
After his bad attitude ruins the holiday, Stan finds himself at the mercy of three guides who take him on a journey through his daughter's relationship with Justyn and where his attitude will lead him.
Each guide was a character who'd played a major part in all three of the original novels, with two of them making me laugh out loud through most of it. The third, however, created an eerie mood that set the stage for something I did not see coming. I loved getting the opportunity to revisit this world and learn a little bit more about Stan as well as Justyn and Rebecca. The writing was engaging, moving, and will be sure to satisfy fans of the series as well as new readers. I recommend it for anyone who loves the classic Christmas story and Young Adult/New Adult fiction.
Justyn and Rebecca wait for the birth of their son while celebrating the holiday but father Stan still can't rap his mind around Rebecca's new husband and his pegan family and freakish looks. Rebecca is ready to disown her father after sending him home for his rudeness during the holiday party at Rebecca's Inlaws. Little does Stan know his life will change after a few helpful but haunting spirits from the past.
Amazing characters and setting of musicals makes this series always longing for more.
I LOVED this series, so I was really excited to see this novella. I got to see what the future held for one of my favorite couples. I was also excited to see a few of the villains from the series make a come back. While the story starts out following the basic theme of A Christmas Carol, there is more than one surprising twist that makes this more than your typical retelling. A fun, unique holiday story! Just don't read this unless you've already read the rest of the books in the series. While it can certainly stand on its own, it will give away who the villains were in the other books.
I loved seeing Rebecca and Justin again. I love these characters so getting more of then was so unexpected and exciting. The story was cute and I loved seeing old enemies also!
