Kujou and Yanagi are no further along than before, but that’s just room for Tachibana to keep getting her hopes up. And what better time than a trip to Souma’s hometown for some stargazing to muck things up?
Other than its college-age setting, which I do appreciate, this is as by-the-numbers and straight down the middle as a shojo story gets. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it doesn’t move very fast, and it’s damned charming.
There’s exactly enough sweet stuff between Yanagi and Kujou that makes it worth waiting for and the other bits in between are fine to while away the time with. This is a pretty solid batch of people whose tendency, minus Kujou, is to overreact to everything and that energy keeps it pretty light.
Really, it’s not exactly novel to have yet another character so oblivious to life that they don’t understand jealousy, but this isn’t playing it terribly straight and Kujou is so nice that she gets away with it (this will not prove the case with another book I am reading).
Kujou’s development has been slow, but the cracks in her taciturn nature slowly forming as she comes to terms with her feelings (or begins to) are good enough and Yanagi is always just ready to be charming or suddenly die. Although, the mangaka rightly notes that he gets a few unintentional boundary violations this volume.
Souma continues to be a character who has actually evolved and despite a little backsliding on his approach to Kujou, he is much more fun when he’s helping things along, the story makes a lot out of somebody who was woefully annoying at the offset.
Watching him and his dad try to interact in the way of all repressed men, combined with Souma’s ongoing tsundere tendencies, is a lot of fun and I like that his mom is there to keep them both in their place.
If you take away that this volume is totally fine, that is the exact point I’m trying to make. These are not fabulous works of literature, but they’re a really good time. Tachibana is a bit of a dip, and crazy shallow, but everybody else works great.
You could do much better, but you could do a lot worse. Every time I grab one of these it’s basically an excuse to hang out with a great cast and get a little romance. There’s nothing wrong with that, but set your expectations accordingly.
3 stars - perfectly acceptable with a sprinkling of cute. I don’t mean to impugn it with that score; it’s absolutely enjoyable, but absolutely of its genre at the same time.
I'm so so so glad I came back to this series because this volume was a blast!
This volume specifically has definitely made the slow burn very much worth it and extremely satisfying because everything has felt so natural, especially with Kujou's feelings, in how it's ALL coming out! No one seems to be holding back anymore and I'm 100% here for it!
And goodness, YANAGI!!!! I know he might have been drunk when a certain scene happened, but I think this series is going to be flying in upcoming volumes because of the effects of that moment! Not only that, but that bombshell of an ending from Souma makes everything going to be significantly more dramatic! LOL!
Speaking of, Souma has grown on me so much, and really feel like we're seeing him bloom as a character. I wouldn't say the other characters don't have "depth," but he feels especially meaningful with his character development. Everyone is SUBTLY growing, but he seems to be flourishing even if he's not exactly thrilled about it. LOL!
I definitely look forward to the next volume! I LOVED seeing so many blushy faces by Kujou and really hope she makes more! I also hope she and Yanagi continue to unknowingly act like a married couple because it makes me smile! Ultimately though, I hope everyone continues to move forward no matter how awkward it may make things! LOL!
“ isn’t it amazing that you were together all the way from elementary school up to college. That’s like destiny” “ Man made destiny I was the one who kept following her around after all” yanagi my favorite simp
"You're an idiot"- Kujou to Yanagi. I SWEAR THIS SERIES JUST GETS CUTER AND CUTER--- I root for Yanagi like there's no tomorrow, but I love Souma as well, I feel bad for him... Besides the flawless art, this series really does a great job at making the reading experience 'adorable'. The romance is SO slow, but in the best way. It makes reading it so fun- towards the end of this one, Kujou was just the cutest (I'm sorry I've said cute so many times lol) But I enjoyed this one to no end!
(This book contains language, (comical) violence and blood, as well as alcohol and adult references. I would give it an age rating of 13+)
This is fire. The emotional rollercoaster, the ups and downs, the character realizations, the confession—oh my god. Everything is finally clicking into place, and it’s got my heart racing. It’s giving me the same rush I felt in the very first chapter, but now with the added weight of real character growth. Watching everything unfold—feelings becoming clear, emotions laid bare—it’s golden. Totally worth the wait. This chapter hit in all the right ways.
It is a very heart warming manga. The story is about Yanagi who is always first in everything plus he is a Rick and handsome brat. But suddenly a girl named Kujou is transferred to his primary school and turns out she is first in everything. So to defeat her and come first he start persuing her and they have a last game.
Ohhh I hope Souma confessing helps Kujou realize her feelings for Yanagi are romantic!!!!! Get this romance moving PLEASE!!! Poor Yanagi has been waiting 10 years (and I feel like I have been too) LOL.
reread 1: kei let it go bruh 🥀 BLUSHY KUJOU WE ALL CHEERED rereading this has only solidified the thought that this manga is unnecessarily long, it's incredibly faced paced in the beginning and then filler-y in the middle 😭 but when you realize that this was originally meant to be a one-shot, it all makes sense. nonetheless, their development (specifically kujou's) has me SOOOOOO invested
3,5/5 Este volumen me ha parecido un pelín más flojo que los anteriores, sobre todo los primeros capítulos, pero los últimos han sido geniales... Los momentos entre Yanagi y Kujô cada vez son mas tiernos y cukis... AND DAT FINAL WOW
