When the beer book revolution comes, this book should be the first against the wall. There are good pieces of information in here... somewhere; digging them out was a nightmare.

This book needs some serious updating, and the first person perspective needs to *go*.

Fairly solid addition to my brewing library, good history on porter and a fairly comprehensive essay on water treatment etc. I did wonder why he did not include anything on brown malt, since this was a fairly standard ingredient at the time but some good information here mainly tailored to American brewers.

As with the rest of this series, dated, but about old fashioned beer styles so that is ok. Probably, as much as you really need to know. This and look up white house honey porter on the internet. And maybe look at some more modern craft beer versions. Also, brown malt exists again now and when this was written it appears it didn't.

Overall, worth getting and recipes will be good I am sure.
