The Trouble With Before

Authors Though this can be read as a standalone. I strongly recommend starting from the beginning of the series. If I Break, which is free on all platforms. Our history made things harder. We were associates out of convenience. We tolerated each other. I never saw her that way. She never saw me that way. She and I were never meant to be friends. You’re not supposed to fall for your best friend’s enemy, even if the enemy is YOUR ex-best friend. This isn’t the story of falling in love with your best friend. It’s about falling out of hate.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Dual
Rating:

Lisa Gregory was at turning point in her life. As a teenager she made a grave mistake and lost the support of her two best friends. She went away on a self discovery journey only to find herself in a dead end. She decided to come back home and start anew, but it was hard when past mistakes still haunting her.

Aiden Riles was one half of the best friend she lost. He had always been by her side until he had enough. With her coming back, their relationship shifted. But her past and his present might not merge well for a possible future.

I've wanted to read the author's other standalone book for a while but never got to it. When I saw the new book with sexy cover and the blurb, it helped solidified my choice lol!

He made me feel as though even after everything that’s happened, something good could still exist.

I like Aiden from the prologue. I actually didn’t expect him to be light and funny. I enjoyed his POV on how he thought his ideal relationship should be. He was a nice guy, but he won’t let anyone step on him.

Once upon a time, we were kindred spirits, the two screw -ups, and it really sucks that I’ve screwed up so badly that even Aidan looks at me as if I’m shit.

Lisa was not a likeable character to begin with. But as the story goes, you can see from her POV why/how she handled things, you’ll sympathize with her. She’s still hurting from her past mistake and things just keep snowballing from there, threatening to suffocate her.

I really like reading about their relationship evolution, how they started as childhood friends, the breakdown of that friendship and the acceptance in the end. However, I was expecting it to be more angsty/emotional/intense. But then again, that might just be me because I do prefer my books to be on the heavy side lol!

We’re fire and ice, each other’s beginning and ending.

The characters from this book came from the author’s series. There are a lot of them and I never read the series, but I didn’t have any problem understanding who’s who.

The Trouble With Before is a story about making mistake, learning to live with it, and both giving and accepting forgiveness. It would appeal to people who wants an emotional book that is not too heavy.

Portia is a great writer and I've LOVED all her previous books. HOWEVER, I just can't stomach a book about Lisa. I can't stand her and you can't make me like her. Sorry, I'm not sorry. It was a DNF at like 25%.

To be honest, I’m not quite sure if the point of this book was to redeem Lisa’s character or not. I still dislike Lisa and her selfishness but my heart broke for her, too. One thing’s for sure, I absolutely hate William, Chris’s father. The best part of this book was Aiden telling William off! What this book did do was prove that Lisa more than paid for her sins. In fact, it feels like she is paying for William’s sins, too. Heaven knows he’s not paying for his part in the mess they created with their horrid affair. I think that’s what disappoints me most about this series. I feel like everyone is paying for William’s sins except William. It seems the author made him the only character immune to consequence. It’s baffling!

Considering I kept reading a series that I knew wasnt working for me books ago, I decide not to post my reviews of this series in my update feeds.

5 best friend Stars

Why 5 star? I was immediately pulled into the story, each time I put it down I was looking forward to picking it up again, wondering what was going to happen next, how Aiden and Lisa would get together. I love childhood friends to lovers story's and this was perfect. Did it blow me away? no but it had everything I could ask for in a friends to lovers story and I loved the writing style.

I haven't read previous books and it felt very much a standalone.

About the plot: Lisa has made one mistake after another and is slowly learning running away doesn't solve anything. With an alcoholic mother, no home, the loss of her best friends, Lisa still gets back up, I liked her character and her previous immaturity and bad decisions is simply a part of life Im not a Judge and I enjoyed reading about the lives of Aiden and Lisa as chaotic as Lisa's was.

A teenage pregnancy, a taboo relationship and it seems even when moving away Lisa still makes bad decisions.

Aiden was Lisa's childhood friend along with Chris but at the age of 17 Lisa crossed the line with Chris 's dad and her bad decisions cost her both Chris and Aiden and she lost them both. It takes two to tango and when all is said and done Lisa was still a child herself.

Aiden was always the Frenemy to growing up, the one Lisa would love to hate, three was a crowd and Chris was the one she was closest too.

Now in her late twenties Lisa has been away in Chicago and things still aren't going to plan.

Aiden receives a concerned phone call to check on Lisa and begrudgingly he goes.

Time heals and feelings change.

Aiden helps Lisa get back on her feet.

Aiden:
If she were any other girl, i'de kiss her. I'd take the lips that are parted just right for me to slide my tongue in and I'd listen to her moans as I backed her against the wall. But she isn’t any other girl. She’s Lisa, my best friend.

A steady paced read told in dual pov's, a read to curl up with and enjoy the characters and the internal battles both fight with a fear of crossing the friendships line .

Lisa:
Sometimes you have to endure stretches in hell, but it's worth it for even a little piece of heaven.

The trouble with before is an enjoyable read that I slipped into with ease, I would definitely read more from Portia Moore.

I only made it to chapter 3 in this book. I could not get past the fact that Lisa slept with a friend's dad, had a kid and left said kid.

Nope just couldn't do it.

3 ★'s

At the core, this is the story of two best friends finding their way back to each other and possibly with each other. The path is a little muddled and unclear and both the hero and the heroine have their share of issues.

When I started this book, I had no idea it was related to another of the author's books (What Happens After) but I should've known since that book was related to her If I Break series.

Lisa's made some really bad decisions in her life. Yes, she hasn't had the best upbringing but she did a lot of things without thinking and without considering the outcomes. She moved to California to try to get a fresh start but again, she got caught up with some of the same issues. So, she comes back home and finds support - surprising with Aidan.

description

The best way to describe Aidan is happy-go-lucky...the worse way is that he's immature. I almost felt like we got two different Aidans...one in the beginning and a different one in the end - thank goodness he changed!

What didn't work for me was not only the immaturity of the almost thirty-somethings but the "couple" didn't even get together till the end of the book. Not only that but Aidan is dating other girls throughout the book and subjecting Lisa to their sexual escapades. Thankfully, those events weren't descriptive but we only got one -sort of- sexy time scene with the two main characters!

There were some saving graces...mainly through the characters that helped these two see what they could be and what they want out of life. Almost every one of their friends and family members affected them in some manner.

Things do end well. There's another little "connection" at the end that I really hope is the end of it. I guess we'll see.

GAH i love everything this woman writes. This series had me hooked from beginning to end. Portia's writing is powerful and perfectly adorable at the same time. I love how we kinda despised Lisa at the end of the last books but we adore her here. She is just a broken girl who needs to be held and understood. I am just so in love with Portia's emotional writing I'm so glad i met her in Edinburgh and got the first 3 books in the series signed. To read this book and fully understand everything i suggest you read the first books and fall in love with Chris and Will as well as all the other characters.

When Portia offered a chance to read an ARC of this book on Facebook, I jumped on board - I didn't even know who/what is was about. I was so freaking thrilled when I realized it was Lisa's book! Lisa and .....nope you have to read it to find out that part. I really didn't realize how much this series needed this book. We all grew to hate Lisa and honestly, I struggled with the decisions she made in the previous book and found her shallow and immature. Even if you're a Lisa hater, you need to read this story. We get in Lisa's head and see her grow. You WILL cry for Lisa during one part of this story and you will love where the story goes. That little connecting twist at the end - WTG Portia.

But looking up at him today, not yet thirty, he is at the height of masculinity. His body is ripped to shreds, and he's standing in front of me looking at me as if he wants to devour me. No, as if he's going to devour me. My friend, not just a friend of a friend anymore. He's my best friend, the only other man whose given me butterflies and made every muscle inside me clench and the only man who's made goose bumps break out on my body like a rash with just a look.

I love Portia Moore. I love the whole premise of these stories. However, I still don't like Lisa. Did this story make me feel a little more sympathy for her? Yes. Did I end up liking her? Not really. I've always like Aiden, but I don't like what he did to Hillary. That was wrong.

Aiden and Lisa: I felt like their change from enemies, to friends to something more happened within the span of a few pages- all of sudden Aiden is looking at her "in a new light" noticing how pretty she is, etc. It was like hate her, I feel bad for her, BAM she is hot and I have feelings for her.

And Lisa still has these moments where she says things about Will (Mr. Scott) that just make me cringe...
"I hate the way that even after all of these years, my heart still doubles it's speed and my body still recognizes him. After all the hurst and pain that we caused, I still can't deny the fact that I loved this man more than anyone else in my entire life. No one has ever made me feel as good as he has, and that's the reason I can't call him or see him alone...I wish he thought of me as more than a troublemaker, someone who only causes pain and destruction. I used to be more than that to him, but I can't him. It's been almost a decade since I've brought him anything but displeasure." -

Ugh. Literally a cringe. I always hated and will always hate Will Scott and what he and Lisa did. I don't care if Willa is the result, what they did was still wrong and should have never happened. Something I didn't like about the last book was that Will never really got told off. He got away with everything he did and his little perfect life and little perfect family came away pretty much unscathed. However, I LOVED this part in this book where Aiden tells him off! It was awesome "...You want to stand here and act like Lisa played the victim? She WAS the victim! She was a kid;you were the adult. I don't care if she hopped on your lap and put her tits in your face. You should have stopped what happened, but you didn't. You used her. You knew she came from a shit family, you knew that she had daddy issues, but did that stop you? Nope, you were busy having the time of your life in some alleged fucked up midlife crisis. You say you were going to stop it, but how the hell should we know? You didn't stop until you were caught!"

FINALLY- someone has the guts to tell him off. He is still a pompous prick in this one. And don't get me started on Gwen. I used to be team Gwen 100%, but not after the last book. Gwen was way too much the martyr here. Didn't buy it. There is no way I see that ever happening in reality.

In the end, I wanted more about Chris and Lauren and their kids. I want more of them please!!!

We all make choices, the problem with that is that we have to live with the consequence of those choices. The people you hurt, the people that leave you side and the heart (yours) that you break. Sometime those choices can be overcome, if you are with the person that truly sees you. Aiden is that person for Lisa, but neither of them realizes it.
This book is about forgiveness, love and family. Family not just from blood but from bonds that form that can never be broken, even when you do the unforgivable.
Aiden is the man that shows Lisa who she can be, who she is to him and how others can and do see her. He shows her the side of her that every one should see, including herself.
Passion and so much more is what I got from this amazing story of people with huge forgiving hearts and a love that surpasses any kind of choice that could ever be deemed wrong.

THIS BOOK!!!!

A MASSIVE 5*

As a huge Portia fan, I have not so patiently been waiting for this book I knew it was going to be golden and let me tell you I was NOT disappointed!!! I read this book in one sitting it was that good !!!!

We meet both Lisa and Aiden through the if I break series and what happens after now they get there story.
Lisa already owned a piece of my heart after reading what happens after and after reading this book she owns even more I absolutely love her now she went through a lot and if anyone deserves a happily ever after she definitely does Aiden the commitment phobe I wasn't too sure about him going into this book but he was hilarious and totally lovable.
I don't want too say too much because I don't want too put any spoilers all I can say this is another brilliant story from the very talented Portia Moore.
I was thrilled to bits I was given the opportunity to read and review this book I received an arc for an honest review

This is my confession: The Trouble With Before is the story of Lisa and Aiden. I guess you can call it an unconventional love story. I have to say that this book is one that you either love...or you don't. I unfortunately fall towards the latter of spectrum. For me, the story was a bit lagging but then seemed to accelerate between the two main characters. Aiden for me was best part and I do wish that maybe the author should have thrown him a bone and gave him a HEA with someone else. I wasn't a fan of Lisa's from the get go, I just felt no connection for the most part. All in all, I'm sure a lot of people will love this book, it just didn't do anything for me.

I enjoyed this book. It was an easy, quick story to read. The storyline was interesting enough. I did find it a bit difficult to really connect with the characters though. I liked the Aidan much more than Lisa, I found her to be rather annoying at times. Although this book is connected to others this author has written, I do think it can easily be read as a standalone.

AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved it. I know most readers hated Lisa but I never did. I've hurt so much for her and I'm really really happy that she has her happy ending and that she knows she deserves that happy ending.

I never thought they'd end up together. Nope. Never shipped them or anything. But, God, they're so good together. Would have loved to see Hillary's reaction to that, lol. It was great seeing them grow, as individuals and as a couple.

I hurt for Lisa again. God, her life has been anything but quiet and peaceful. She's gone through so much and yes, many times it was her own fault, but well that's life, and she grows up a lot in this book. She doesn't 100% forgive herself but she accepts what happened and is able to move along. Kinda. It's like she takes two steps forward and one back, but she's there. And she had Aidan with her, which was awesome.

God, Aidan sticking up for Lisa was E V E R Y T H I N G. I said it on my reading progress and I'll say it again: THANK YOU, Aidan, for saying everything I didn't dare say. I completely agree with you. #TeamLisa #WillIsAnAsshole I think Lisa should stop acting so apologetic towards Will, to be honest. I know he's raising her (their) child and I'm not saying she should be rude to him but HE IS COMPLETELY RUDE TO HER GODDAMMIT. He acts as if he had nothing to do with what happened. Ugh.

Now, on happier stuff, THE FEEEEEEELS!!!!! You have no idea how happy I was

I thought there would be a part where Lisa and Gwen talk, or where Brett comes back, even if it's to say awful shit to her. I kind of feel that was missing, I don't know.

And OMG, can we talk about Lisa's dad???!?!?!?!?!?!??!!!!!!!!

I really really REALLY hope this isn't the last time we read about this characters. This can't be the end. I refuse to believe this is the end. I need more. And I think there's more, there were some hints in this book. Right? Please don't tell me I'm fooling myself. PLEASE PORTIA I NEED MORE!

Ah, I loved it. What Happens After is still my favorite, but this was an amazing read. The could be's, the what if's, the regret for a past that held a different future (did I say that right? lmao english is not my first language sorry) I hate having those mixed bittersweet feelings but I crave them at the same time. And this book made me feel that and more. As always, I’ve highlighted almost all the book. 10/10 would recommend, I'm already bugging my friends to read all of these books. Amazing.

The Trouble With Before was an unconventional love story between friends who unknowingly became lovers.
Lisa had a screwed up childhood. A mother who was selfish and made bad choices. Lisa set out to not be like her mother until temptation knocked on her door and she herself fell into some bad choices. Then she gave herself a second chance to make better choices. However, her second chance did not turn out how she had planned.

Aidan was a commitmentphobe and enjoyed sex only wanting no strings sex with girls. Aidan was an overgrown man-child who could act like a stupid boy sometimes. Aidan in my opinion was a horn dog. Aidan thought about sex way too much. In fact, he should have majored in it. I wish Portia had toned down the testosterone in him.

I had mixed feelings about these characters. They all struggled with commitment and responsibility. The story droned on about Lisa's issues and mistakes. Aidan's character was blasé about women and relationships. He knew women were sexy and good for sex but I'm not sure he thought woman could be anything but a sex object.

I struggled to connect with these characters. I felt too much disconnect with all the bad choices and the obliviousness of Aidan. Even with the mention of Chris, Lauren, Will, and Gwen I still was not ecstatic when they were mentioned. These characters no longer held the same appeal as when they were main characters in their own books.

I did not like how Portia portrayed the female characters as caddy sluts. The main characters were around thirty year olds and yet they acted like they were still in college. These characters were immature and an emotional mess.

Portia created plenty of drama. It was entertaining in a soap opera way.
Portia's topics were controversial and the relationships she created with the characters were effed up. The characters made bad choices yet were forgiven or given an opportunity to do better. At times I felt these characters behaved inappropriately. The story was Scandalous with unfaithful characters.
This story was not my favorite. The If I Break series was better in my opinion.

What a story, God I don't know exactly where to begin or what to say about this fantastic book. I love a friends to lovers book but this was so much more it had enemies thrown in  the mix and a huge taboo subject in my opinion as well, although that was handled well.

I was just swept away in the writing style and the way the story telling just carried you through the pages. I have yet to read the previous books but I read this as a standalone. Which I feel it didn't need the previous ones to feel all that I was supposed to. But I will now go back and read them all as they were ment to be read.

I recommend this book, alone for how it made me feel and I just had to keep picking it up needing to know what happens. That's how you know you have a great read on your hands. Bravo Portia.

I loved this book. I didn't realise it was Lisa's story from the 'If I Break' series (since l read a while ago), and was flooded with the memories of all the charachters as l started to read this. I loved how Potria Moore was able to develop the hate/love relationship between Lisa & Aidan. The part l loved most was when Adain and Will almost come to blows and how Aidan stuck up for Lisa and really told it as it was. After all Will was the adult and in the end he hadn't lost anything but gained a daughter. I'm glad Lisa got her happy ending with Aidan. A few connections between characters from her previous books were made. Will there be another spin off to this series? Perhaps Will's story and his asscociation with Lisa's dad. Can't wait to read more from this amazing author.

Oh my God.... this book is amazing. I have just sat and read it all in one sitting. I loved the characters and the storyline and I'm so happy for Lisa.  I really felt like I connected with the characters and the author completely made me get submerged into their life. This really is a worth while reading book and I promise you won't be disappointed. I don't want to go into to much detailed about the storyline encase I spoil it for people but honestly read this book, you won't regret it.

Received for an honest opinion.
Lisa is not a good person. I find it hard to get over the things she's done in the past but I find myself trying really hard to get there, but it's difficult. I like Aiden, a strong, dependable guy with a touch of humour and cluelessness I enjoy. I find though that the development of their relationship moved too slowly for my liking. I did really like Aiden though which saves the book a little for me.

Lisa is a character I hated but in this book we see a different side of her, I even almost shed a tear for her. You can't help what the heart wants and with Aidan and Lisa it's each other. This is a great story of , love, forgiveness. it's beautiful.

Aiden Aiden Aiden ... who knew that he would turn out to be even more romantic and sexy as sin than Chris??? If you've read the "If I Break" series, Aiden is the best friend of one of the most complex characters ev-er!

In his own story, Aiden is still the no-relationship, never gonna be tied down, but dutiful grandson, cool uncle, good friend, and hot lover. He has it all.

But when his ex-best friend Lisa comes back into his life, Aiden has to wonder does he really have it all? The two kindred souls know just how to irritate each other and call each other out no matter what.

They made me laugh and cry, too, as they each grapple with their pasts and present struggles.

Reading their story was such an emotional roller coaster ... I have a headache from pent up tears! And I just love the revelation of "the feels" --- isn't that what we all long for?

Fans of Portia Moore will not be disappointed; in a way, she teaches us that life has a way of working out even if the start isn't perfect. As a reader, catching all the threads that bind the characters together has been an amazing journey.

Thank you for this story in particular which may have been the most traumatic (yes even more than Chris and Lauren) and yet the most satisfying, humbling, and beautiful love story. I'm gonna wish for a wedding vow as passionate and romantic as what I read here!

I met these characters in "If I Break" series and I would never want to read their love story because I hated the girl! She is a total b*tch, a selfish cruel b*tch! This poor guy definitely deserves someone better...

Nope, definitely not wanting to see how she gets her HEA.

P.S. If you still want to read this book, it must be read after "If I Break" series.
