John Lindley Byrne is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero.

Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing.

So this is the fight between Franklin and Mephisto that indirectly led to the origin of Wiccan and Speed? AND this is the confrontation between Ben and Johnny over Johnny dating "Alicia" behind Ben's back? AND this has a cameo appearance of the dire wraiths and their defeat at the hands of the Space Knights?

A lot of big events came together here, in what would otherwise be an unremarkable issue number 277. Damn.

Of course it will take years before most of this stuff comes together. It will be another year or two after this issue came out before "Alicia" will be revealed as Lyja. It will be decades before Wiccan and Speed are revealed to be the reincarnated souls of Scarlet Witch's children, made from the fragments of Mephisto's soul when Franklin defeated him here. And the Space Knights only just reappeared in Cable a couple months ago, for the first time in decades.

... Huh.

Classic FF with a dose of Doctor Strange, but the two stories side by side to tell the one tale seems unneeded and too frantic. I also don’t care for the whole lil’ Franklin is so powerful with his ultra-powered mutant man locked inside him he just blinks and Mephisto goes away but no one knows how or why or when and 99% of the time he’s just a regular kid. A cool issue overall, but with some small holes.
