Lydia James has little time nor hope of finding a love of her own, not when her father is leaving to work for the railroad and she's left to look after her three sisters and all the local school-aged children. All that changes when Vincent Bellini shows up on her doorstep in the darkest hours of night, mistaking her for a never-met cousin. Unfortunately, Vince's mother has a dark past and her tormentor is determined to find her. At the same time, Lydia's herd is attacked maliciously, and the search for the culprit leads them down dangerous pathways. Will Vince and Lydia find love? Or will their love too fall victim to the hunters who stalk them?

MY HOME IS WITH YOU—YOU ARE MY HOME

The second story in the Dakota Bound series could read well as a stand-alone but will have many characters from book one, Johanna. The story will take place outside of the town of Whispering Springs in the Dakota territory but will have a few cameo moments in town too. It begins with Samuel James needing to travel and work at the railroad, leaving his four daughters to manage the homestead. The previous year was devastating after the swarms of locust destroyed their crops. To be able to pay the banker, Mr. Crump, he must seek work, or they will lose the homestead.

“In a moment, he was gone, and life changed forever.”

Imagine having someone show up at your house at night, assuming you are a nearby neighbor. They present a letter and hand you a change purse. They need you to house them for protection. So what do you do? Well, Lydia didn’t straighten them out. Instead, she opened her door to Vance and his mother, Olive Bellini. But what happens the next morning when he learns that she isn’t his cousin, Johanna, will have lots of angered feelings. Will they be able to repair the damage?

The story has mystery, suspense, danger, angst, along with family working together, working with friends, and two people connecting. Once the misunderstanding and confusion are settled, Olive and Vance will be staying at the James homestead, rather than the Jarrett’s.

Vance is a city boy from Albany, New York, an attorney, not a farmer. He will have to learn how to do things on the farm, with cattle, and other required chores. As he watches Lydia working around the farm, teaching the children, and even parents from the neighboring homestead, he gains respect for her. The more time they spend together, the closer they become. But Vance didn’t have an excellent example with his parents and had decided to remain a bachelor—has Lydia put new ideas in his head?

The good, the bad, and the ugly of people play roles in this tale. With Samuel James away, Mr. Crump and his two sons start harassing Lydia. Then things happen on the farm, with the cattle, and then it becomes personal. Life and death moments, lives could be changed forever. The story is a page-turner as the tale unfolds.

I love the neighbor's camaraderie, how, when someone needs help, they are always there to lend a hand. When the James family suffers hardships, they work with them. When it is noticed that a schoolhouse is needed, that is a plan started. The story will have little bits and pieces about what happened to Olive and why she is in danger. It will have two people falling in love and wanting to marry. I love the chemistry between Vance and Lydia and how love changes things.

“I love you, Vance Bellini. I bless the day you showed up on my doorstep by mistake. I will happily tie my soul to yours.”

Enjoyable

However, in the beginning half a few names get mixed, typo I assume. It's distracting to a reader but otherwise, I enjoyed the story.

Madeline or Meredith?
