Great story which attempts to fathom how an ecological Utopia could result from the ashes of our consumer resource hungry civilisation and be truly sustainable. An authoritarian rule based hierarchy that survives the collapse, is contrasted with a development of an egalitarian cooperative that is sensitive to nature and limits to growth and at the same time satisfies our cultural and spiritual needs. The ultimate test comes when the utopia faces a violent confrontation with the old style resource hungry bandits. Is the answer believable? Perhaps not, but a lot of thought has gone into the culture that has to be fostered to ensure its survival up until that ultimate test. A very stimulating read.
