Loved this novella. It's one of those books that keep you on your toes and make you almost miss your train stop because you are too busy reading to look up. This is the first time I've come across this kind of concept and I really enjoyed stepping into the world of Threads through Tahner's eyes. Looking forward to more books in this series.

Tahnner Rhanick is indentured to the king of Ilyia by his ambitious father, destined to serve in the royal court as a raveller. He is not prepared for the destiny that has been forced upon him, nor his role as a pawn in Lord Rhanick's machinations.

But as he begins to understand the future and the past, he is drawn deeper and deeper into a world that he never knew existed. Soon he faces danger at every turn. A rival house is jostling for supremacy. Tahnner's uncle disappears suspiciously amid rumors of treason, while malevolent beasts lurk on the kingdom's borders. And to the north, war is raging...

At least Tahnner can count on his friend, Senara, a young girl with the ability to Thread Jump. That is until she falls for the son of his father's enemy; until she is sent to the front line...

This novella was a great read, building out the world of Illyia in which ravellers experience the beauty and terror of the Threads. I loved the concept of how it is within everyone's power to see the future and the moral consequences that play out as a result.

Tahnner's character develops slowly through the book as he comes to terms with his predicament, and indeed the extent of his abilities. I enjoyed the other characters as well but am impatient now to see Tahnner step into the maelstrom of the conflict and use the Threads in anger!

Can Tahnner navigate the politics of the Ravellers Guild and prevail? Or will he be consumed by the Threads, doomed to madness?

Looking forward to finding out.

Tahnner is a pawn in his father’s game of shifting allegiances. Eager to prove his loyalty to the king, he offers his son to the Ravellers’ Guild, forcing him into a lifetime of service Tahnner never wanted, reading the past and future of his world in the mysterious Threads of morning and evening.

The Ravellers’ Guild is a novella by Rachel Emma Shaw, setting the stage for a book series in production. The world the author has created is both familiar and new: the warring political factions are the background for many a story; the Ravellers, adepts who can follow, understand and translate the messages of the Threads are new.

The novella jumps into action quickly, building both conflict and the world in which that conflict occurs, and introducing us to many of the major characters. The story moves over time – several years pass, allowing Tahnner to mature in his skills, bringing us to the climax, a moment of betrayal, self-realization, and regret for Tahnner, and leaving the reader with enough questions to encourage them to delve into the full series, when it is available.

I’m giving The Ravellers’ Guild 4.5 stars; not 5, because the pacing in the middle section of the book could have been tighter. It’s a tantalizing introduction to what may be a fresh new fantasy series.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Ravellers Guild follows the story of Tahnner the youngest son of a noble family who is indentured by his father to the Raveller's Guild. The Guild is a feared and revered group who are trained to read the threads, golden lines that cover the land with the light of every sunrise and sunset, and can reveal the history and possible futures of everything they touch, to those who can learn to read them.

Scared at first, as he has been taught to fear the threads, Tahnner soon learns to read them, and develops a friendship with one of the other students, although at first he struggles to fit in with most of the others.

The story is gripping from the beginning, and lures the reader in with the mystery of the threads, and the machinations of Tahnner's father. The characters are well developed, and draw you in to the story. The world is well thought out and deep in lore and culture. The novella only scratches the surface of the world and I'm excited to read more.

The pacing drops a little in the middle and there is an abrupt time shift that threw me off, but the characters and writing are strong enough to carry the reader through it. The story reaches a gripping conclusion that answers some questions while creating more. A great prequel to what I'm sure will be a great series.
