Perceptual Intelligence: The Brain's Secret to Seeing Past Illusion, Misperception, and Self-Deception

Rate this book
The Secret Behind Our Perceptions Finally Revealed!

Why do we gravitate to products endorsed by celebrities? Why does time seem to go by faster as we get older? Why are some athletes perpetual winners and others losers? Exploring the brain’s ability to interpret and make sense of the world, Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler describes how your perception can be reality or fantasy and how to separate the two, which is the basis of improving your Perceptual Intelligence (PI). With concrete examples and case studies, Dr. Brian (as he’s known to his patients) explains why our senses do not always match reality and how we can influence the world around us through perceptions, inward and outward. By fine-tuning your PI, you can better understand what’s really going on and make more insightful decisions in your life.

The humour and some interesting information or trivia thrown at you here and there cannot save this mess. Which is a pity because the author is quite talented at writing and with some effort it could have been a good book. And I know we are not supposed to take seriously the perceptual intelligence assessment from the last chapter but even so ... how on earth can laughing out loud until your chest hurts at the preposterous sermon given by your priest about red-haired witches living among us is a sign of low perceptual intelligence? Laughing in the aisles at an imbecile’s exhortation is always the right thing to do no matter how odd and antisocial it might seem. :P

Your perceptual intelligence determines how you distinguish between reality and illusion. You never perceive the world directly. Rather, your mental models filter perceptions. Your brain will work hard to construct a story to explain when something inexplicable happens. People that have low perceptual intelligence are vulnerable to peer pressure and often follow everyone else.

This book was interesting, I struggled with what rating to give it. It has a healthy blend of scientific studies, scientifically-backed applications, and personal philosophy. Not a problem, the book wasn't published in an academic journal, so there ought to be some wiggle room.

In the end, interesting as it may be, I found I just didn't hate Christianity enough to give it 5-stars.

Despite some interesting tidbits on human perception, there is small section of antirussian propaganda which is later followed by sodomite propaganda. So, don't read, it's not worth it. He even attempts to justify bestiality.
