Mason Alexander thought all he wanted in life was something to call his own—something without the family name attached. He got that when he bought his bar in Blackcreek...but then a hard truth opens his eyes that he’s been lied to his whole life, and he’s tangled amid the family that loves him, a truth that haunts him, and torn between the life he wants for himself and the obligation he feels for his family.

Gavin Davis knows a thing or two about living a double life. Being a gay man with strict Christian parents who believe he’s going to Hell, has never been easy. Instead of dealing, Gavin lost himself in his career. Teaching music gives him solace. So when he loses his job at a private school for helping out a gay kid, he feels like he lost more than a job. He lost his identity.

Blackcreek is a new start for both of them, two men, loyal to a fault, who both feel obligated to people in their lives. What Mason and Gavin don’t expect to find in each other is the place where they can be real. They know they want each other, it’s the rest of it they can’t figure out. Caught between loyalty, obligation, fear, tragedy and family, Mason and Gavin’s lives threaten to pull them away from each other if they don’t get real, and stop playing pretend, for good.

I'm feeling lazy, so:

First, the GOOD:

- lots of rimming; god, the shit Gavin did with his tongue!

- plenty of fucking (Mason is the bossiest bottom ever created!)

- some bonding/friendship moments with the guys from books 1 and 2

- blue-collar bar setting with a piano and everything

BUT.

I'm quoting my bestie Catherine because I really can't say it any better:

There wasn't really any trajectory for their relationship . . . They met. They started boning. They fell in love. Big whoop.

Gavin cried and whined because his Christian parents "pretended" (THEME!) he wasn't gay.

And Mason cried and whined because his super loving, wealthy, doting, non-judgmental parents never told him that he was . . .

Yeah, cry me a river, big boy, and then put on your boxer briefs and GET THE FUCK OVER IT.

There were too many conversations that spun round and round (same ol' angst, same ol' Ferris wheel), too many scenes that felt like filler (how many times could Gavin actually have the same fucking conversation about being an abomination with his mother?).

There was Mason's proverbial jealous ex, Isaac (5 bucks says his story is next).

And then right when the MCs were connecting, at 90 percent . . .

One minute they're fucking in the shower, and the next Mason's all, We gotta talk.

Christ, that felt SO manufactured.

Then it's a few months later, and the buttons go flying, and Gavin sings a song, and all is right with the world.

Yeah.

NO.

It didn't help that sometimes I couldn't tell whom "he" referred to (Mason? Gavin?). They were nearly interchangeable.

Plus these gems:

You're always tightening your own reigns.

Oh, no she di'int.

It was Friday night and they'd been like this the whole time - awkward, which in itself was awkward as hell.

I just bet it was.

The third book in the Blackcreek series focuses on bar owner Mason and ex-music teacher Gavin. Both men are battling their parents for control over their lives. Mason's parents want him to take over the family restaurant and Gavin's parents want him to pretend he isn't gay when they are together.

I really enjoyed this book in the series (but Stay remains my #1) and the chance to visit with the characters from the first 2 books. One thing that was refreshing about this book was that Mason and Gavin became friends before they fell into bed. While that was a nice change, they did end up labeling their relationship as "friends with benefits" for several months before falling in love. that lack of emotion usually leaves me cold, but somehow worked here.

A bonus to this story was a break-up. I always love a good break-up, because it makes getting back together that much sweeter.

This was a wonderful edition to the Blackcreek family, a personal favorite series of mine. Recommended!

Pretend is book three in the Blackcreek series. This one was about Mason and Gavin, both of these men are trying to get away from something in their lives. They decide to do it by moving to Blackcreek. Mason opened up his own bar and has been in this town since, where he has become friends with the characters of the previous books in this series. Gavin is new to town after he lost his job as a music teacher, he is a bit lost and looking for some direction for his life, so he moves to Blackcreek and rents his ex-boyfriend Braden's old house. Somehow he ends up at the bar Mason works and owns, and that is where he finds work as a bartender. They both are very attracted to each other, and since they both are single, they decide to do something about it.

I really enjoyed both Mason and Gavin. I especially loved Mason and what a bossy bottom he was, I was fanning myself a lot because of it. I really enjoyed the smoking sex scenes in this book. I also really enjoyed the story. Mason has been pushed into going the family business, something he doesn't have a real interest in. Then Mason finds out that he has been lied to his whole life by his family. While Gavin, after continually trying to make his family happy by pretending not to be himself, finds himself jobless and rejected for trying to help a boy in his music class deal with his sexuality. They are both tired of pretending to be happy when they are not. They understand each other and together they find a place where they can be happy just being themselves and finally live.

I liked how supportive these characters were of each other. It took a while for them to fall in love. Sure, some parts of the book dragged on a bit, but I actually enjoyed reading those scenes where Mason and Gavin would slowly get to know each other better. The steam, as I've mentioned before, was off the roof hot! I liked the overall story line of this one, but it wasn't very angsty or very emotional, so there wasn't much that went on. I did feel for both of the characters, especially Gavin. I hated how much Gavin's parents didn't support him, it was just horrible. I loved the sweet romantic ending that melted my heart. It was a perfect conclusion for them both. I really enjoyed this read and I can't wait to see what is next in this series.

Four "Holy-Hotness, Batman" Stars!

 photo 89D0B368-063E-4499-8A05-7431C9EF0BA4_zpszbas3qno.gif

Pretend,
book three in the Blackcreek Series, gives us the angsty love story of Mason and Gavin. Mason we met in Wes and Braden's book, is the new owner of Creekside bar. Coming from a wealthy family of restauranteurs, he strives to have something for himself...not some high-end restaurant his father gives to him. He also struggles with finding out he's adopted...feeling like his life is one big lie. Why couldn't his parents tell him he wasn't their own flesh and blood? So, instead, he hides in Blackcreek, tending to his bar, avoiding family...All work and no play...until a sexy musician walks thru his door.

Gavin, ex-boyfriend of Braden from book 2, settles in Blackcreek to also escape family. Losing his music teacher position by counseling a gay student, he's unsure where his life is headed. The son of devoutly religious parents, he's constantly pressured to be someone he's not...straight. His parents seriously think he will go to Hell for his homosexual tendencies. All they do is pray for him...pray he'll come to his senses. So, he too hides from family and pain.

Pretend gives us a fairly heavy dose of conflict and emotion compared to the past two books in the series. Both men are avoiding family drama and pain, instead seemly solace with each other. Mason needs help at the bar. Gavin needs a job. Doesn't hurt that the two men are fiercely attracted to one another either. Fringe benefits of the job!

I enjoyed this installment. Not my favorite in the series, but it kept my interest and was probably the HOTTEST of the three. Mason is a bottom, yet doesn't fail to tell Gavin what he wants...and how he wants it. Nothing I love more than a masculine and rather dominant MM love story!

Not sure if the author has more Blackcreek man lovin' coming our way but I'd love to learn more about Isaac, Mason's ex-lover who HATES to lose. My interest is piqued!

Just because this pic is awesome, I thought I'd share!

*** 2.5 Stars ***

I fully acknowledge that my rating may be a smidgen harsh. In fact, I would happily spring for an extra .25 stars if I believed in doing such a thing, but I don't, so... *awkward pause* Anywhooo, I thought this book was just alright. It wasn't particularly angsty, but nor was it particularly fluffy and sweet. It just kind of... was. Quite frankly, this sort of middle of the road book tends to bore me a bit.

Overall, I found Gavin and Mason to be pretty stock romantic characters - both instantly likable and relatable but entirely unexciting; they were your "everyman" (but not in a good way). They met, they boned, they fell in love, and all of it was pretty yawn-inducing. I mean, for all their smexin' (and there is a delicious dose of it in this book), I still felt like I was missing true sizzle outside of the bedroom. I will say that my favourite part was the repeated use of the "Gavin, I think this is one of those times you kiss me" shtick. Melted me every. single. time.

Sidenote to any gay men currently reading this review: If you're verse and your partner is an exclusive top or exclusive bottom, is this upsetting or frustrating to you? Or do you just kinda roll with it because you love the other person? I mean, I have to imagine that if someone I was shtupping with romantically didn't like half of what I enjoyed in the bedroom, it could become a bit of a problem. So, inquiring minds want to know (feel free to leave a comment below or PM me).

To be honest, I enjoyed reading about Mason and Gavin's relationships with their respective parents far more than their relationship with each other. I thought Mason's anger with and detachment from parents he so clearly loved and respected added a significant layer to his storyline and character, and Gavin's interactions with his ailing father actually brought something new(ish) to the whole my-mom's-a-religious-bigot-who-rejected-me-after-coming-out trope. That last moment with Gavin's dad? Warmed my coal-shaped heart.

Also, I'm just going to throw this out there: Anyone who publishes a book without having several fresh sets of eyes beta and proofread it first should be required to slap a warning on the book blurb so that customers know ahead of time what they are getting themselves into. The number of typos and grammar errors in this book hurt my soul just a little (not a lot, mind you, but definitely a little).

Final verdict: Third time really is the charm! I have finally learned that this series is too underwhelming to pre-order and rush to read on release day. However, let's be honest: if Hart continues the series (could Isaac's book be next?!), I would probably still read it. *shrugs*

Book 3) Mason and Gavin really sizzle up the bedroom and other rooms with their erotic sexy M/M hotness. Wow !! The sex in this story is explosive, erotic, deeply emotional, and off the charts wonderful !!! Gavin is beginning his life anew after quitting his old job. In this new chapter of life he meets Mason, owner of a bar and grill. Each has demons to fight, both have issues with parents, as Mason found out he's adopted, and Gavin's Dad has Alzheimer's and his Mom has strict religious beliefs that he's destined for Hell. The men find an attraction and need that overrides everything. Their relationship develops fast and is a forever kind of love. We get to see the previous series characters, which is always great, and we get to watch Gavin and Mason reevaluate their lives and expectations. Took me a bit to grab hold of this story, but was completely enthralled once I did. Worthwhile and deeply feeling, you can't go wrong here. Highly recommend ! ENJOY !!!

***4 Stars***

"I have never had to pretend with you. Even from the beginning, you knew who I was. I showed that person to you before I did anyone else."

Thank you, Riley Hart for starting my year off on the right foot! This was a wonderfully sweet and saucy "finding yourself" read.

Gavin and Mason are both living with the burden of their families' expectations. Both men trying to find happiness on their own path and their own place in the world.

After discovering that his whole life has been a lie, Mason moves to Blackcreek to open up a bar. A place all his own. His time. His money. His business. HIS dream. But Mason's family has a plan for his future. A plan that he isn't so sure he wants. After meeting Gavin, Mason finds himself opening up to the man. Easy conversations with no judgment, just understanding...something he's never had before.

"You make things feel better, music man. It doesn't feel so fucked up with you around. It's not about work and money and obligations with you. It's about want."

Due to his gay lifestyle, Gavin lost his two loves....teaching and music. Music is his passion. An outlet where he can connect and just feel. His parents are devout Christians who do not support his lifestyle. They had plans and dreams for their only son...and it does not include his soul burning in hell for loving men. So, in order to avoid conflict he hides who he is, putting his own needs on the back burner. Mason understands Gavin's heavy heart due to family expectations. He helps Gavin grab hold of life. To stop letting it pass him by, and actually live it.

"Mason had become like music to Gavin. A constant. Something that made him feel good, that made him feel alive."

Even though nothing really "happens" in this book, you still feel a forward momentum. Watching two men discover themselves, their path, their place in the world, their need for the other. Their unyielding support of each other is the foundation to their relationship, and although difficult decisions must be made they both only want what's best for the other.

But don't you fret, this isn't some heavy book filled with never ending life lessons. Mason and Gavin both know the perfect way to relieve the day's stress. And Mason shows himself to be quite the magnificent bossy bottom!

"I want to be fucked. That doesn't mean I won't take control. I'll want you inside me when I tell you to be there. I'll want you to kiss me and suck me and touch me when I tell you to, but it will be YOUR cock in MY ass."

Mason's take charge attitude freed Gavin. Allowed him to both give and take what he wanted. To feel pleasure in ways he's never experienced before. But make no mistake, although Mason may have been topping from the bottom, he fully gave himself over to Gavin.

"You're making me feel things, too, music man. Go to bed with me. Fuck me. Play for me. Show me your music."

Overall, Gavin and Mason's story was a great addition to this series. A low on angst, sweet and steamy read. Riley Hart continues to prove why she's an autobuy author for me.

"I have never had to pretend with you. Even from the beginning, you knew who I was. I showed that person to you before I did anyone else."

I started this book expecting to love, at least Mason, if not Gavin too. And for the most part I did. I liked both of them. I just never really connected. I wasn't overly anxious to see how things would go between them. I was never really invested in their story. It was such a shame too.

Mason and Gavin connect over their reluctance to meet family their families' expectations. Mason doesn't want the to be responsible for his family's bussiness. He doesn't want to run the Alexander's restaurants, no matter how succesful they might be. And after learning the secret they have been keeping from him, he has never felt more disconnected from his family than he does now.

Now, that may make you believe that Mason's family are bastards. That is soooo not the case. I honestly thought that Mason was full of it. Yes, learning something like he did when you are already 30 years old can be a shock to the system, I get it. But his family loved him. And I honestly think that if he had sat down and talked to them we would have been saved most of the drama.

Gavin on the other hand had won the lottery on the "Worst Kind of Parent" pool. His parents were the "conservative christian type", exactly the kind of people who would make a gay guy go crazy. They were certain that their son would go to hell for his choices and although they professed their love for him, they also wanted him to pretend to be straight so he wouldn't embarass them to their other good-christian friends. Because to God being gay is wrong, lying and pretending to be something you're not, isn't. Idiots!!!

Anyway... I just wasn't feeling it. The sex was good though! I loved how bossy Mason was, even if he was the bottom of the pair.

"You make things feel better, music man. It doesn't feel so fucked up with you around. It's not about work and money and obligations with you. It's about want."

BR with Friends - 26/01/15

I wanted to love this book because Riley Hart is one of my favorite authors. But it was just an okay read for me it didn’t wow me. The story is very predictable, and it was kinda boring sometimes. Maybe because there was so much family issues also the word Pretend, shows up so many times throughout the book that it lost all is purpose. We do catch up with the guys from the previous books, but this book could be read as a standalone if you wanted to jump straight into this one.

Why I gave it 4 stars, becauseI loved Bossy- naughty- dirty talker- Mason.

I really do love this series and the men in them. I don't think I could even pick a favorite couple. I adore them all.

Mason and Gavin were just so freaking perfect for each other. I LOVED them together. I loved that it wasn't instant love and that they were kind of friends with benefits just kind of feeling each other out and getting to know each other. I enjoyed how the relationship developed and how they just gradually moved from hanging out to dating to being in a relationship. Each transition of their relationship felt natural.

Boy were their families all kinds of a hot mess. Gavin's mom though...
sigh photo: Ryan Reynolds arghryanreynolds.gif
I really wanted to smack the woman for all the guilt she kept laying on Gavin.
One of my favorite moments in the book is where Gavin is alone visiting his father and his dad is lucid for that visit and the conversation that followed totally had me tearing up and maybe even a few tears were let loose. I couldn't help it. That damn sappy shit got to me. It was a beautiful moment for Gavin though. I was thrilled for him.
Mason had a lot of drama going on with his family. To speak too much of it will just spoil it for others so I will just say that I felt for the guy. The loyalty one feels to their family can get pretty twisted when ones dreams and wants are different from what their family had envisioned for them. It's hard trying to stay true to them and yourself at the same time. You have to choose in the end. But I think when it was all said and done, Mason was able to keep his loyalty to his family as much as he could while still keeping his dream.

It was a great read. One I would recommend to my fellow M/M lovers. ;]

Back to Blackcreek and another sexy couple Mason and Gavin.

Mason owns the local bar Creekside and he love's his bar, he has turned his back on the family business and his ex boyfriend.

Gavin come's to Blackcreek to start a new life after losing his job for being gay and escaping his parents who will not accept him for who he is.

Gavin walks into Mason's bar one night and soon everything changes for them both. Jumping out of a plane, music lessons and then they both have to deal with their family problems.

Together they are HOT sex WOW, Mason is so bossy but Gavin love's it and I love the nicknames they have for each other so cute. I love the friendship between Gavin and Braden, Braden always makes me LOL.

Loved catching up with Coop & Noah and Braden & Wes and little Jessi. Riley Hart does it again.

I was a bit afraid to read this one because if all the reviews, but I have to say, I really did like it. Not as much as the others in this series, but for me....I really enjoyed reading it.

I do think Mason could have been a bit mor tactfull about the whole " I don't fuck..I only want to be fucked". Also he knew Gavin was missing it and isn't a realtionship give and take ?

Well...I'm not a gay man, so I don't know how they all work that stuff out.

I did like bossy Mason, but sometimes it was a bit too much....I mean Gavin wasn't a toddler !!

I hope there will be more books in this series because so far I love all those boys

A solid entry for this series but overall, it did not evoke the same feels I got with the previous two.

Mason basically has had a midlife crisis, spurring him to leave his old life and revamp the bar in Blackcreek. He’s doing well for himself and is satisfied with working hard and focusing on his latest endeavor. He’s not looking for a relationship, but when Gavin crosses his path, he’s definitely not adverse to a little fun, despite hiring him to help out at his bar.

Gavin is not without his own personal demons, and returns back home to figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life. He’s tired of living for others and their expectations, and is looking to make some changes. Both men have some critical thinking to do and they nicely complement and support each other through various conflicts, growing closer despite their employer/employee dynamic.

Again, I can’t really pinpoint why this didn’t work for me as well as the other books. I hate to say it, but I was a bit bored. As always, Hart brings topical angst dealing with a lot of heavy family dynamics, minimal relationship fuss, and decent heat. Collide still remains my favorite, but this will surely adequately satisfy most.

I have some conflicted feelings about this book... I loved Mason and Gavin together... they have a great sexual chemistry! The sex is really hot, but their relationship kind of born from nowhere! And then, when you think that they are good and having a great sex session, comes the bomb! Couldn't they work their problems together? And please, tell me why there has to be so much drama on both sides? Probably it's me, I must be with a very low level of patience, but please...

But the sex was good!!!

Well ... now is the time for my true statement right?? :P

I love all of my Blackcreek boys and that’s not the surprise, the surprise is this that ”I didn’t liked the last installment of this series, can anything be more shocking then THIS??

I had a lot of expectations with this last book, and lol all went in vail or you can say hell!! I liked Manson in “Stay” and I was totally intrigued to read his book but Gavin, God I was totally in ecstasy that I will read about Brandon’s first boyfriend. But when I start reading “Pretend” I was totally disappointed. It was not what I expected, the characters were such intriguing in other books or what we have learned about them in previous books were just not in this, it was like I am reading about some other “Gavin” not the one Brandon told us about in “Stay”.

At first I like Mason & Gavin both, but as the real start revealing I just lost all the interest in them, I don’t even care whether they breakup or makeup in this book. The drama was off the chart dragged and what the hell opera soap. The family drama is one of my pet peeves I don’t like the plot which is based on all the family crap. Because come the fuck on, we are adults and yeah family IS important but all the book was based on family, family, family. Mason had these problems with family that he wants Gavin to fuck them all out. And Gavin had this heartbreaking conversation with his mother that he wants to forget himself in Mason. Well are you guys using each other, so you can forget you family problems or what??

For me this book was really really dragged, I don’t know what the hell I was reading all the time. This book was all revolving around family drama and sex. The relationship was not developed nicely, the characters were not developed, even till the last page the drama was there we got their HEA in last 10-15 pages can you believe it, it was totally rushed. Like the author itself was tired of writing all this drama. Believe me I love Riley Hart’s writing but I don’t know what happened here. It was like she wanted our all sympathy with these characters but all in sound whiny to my ears.

Angst is good but only in some amounts, we can read all the book full of angst, well when there was not angst there was sex. Sex was awesome but if we ONLY want to read about sex then there are book that is all about sex but we want a good plot line. Which was seriously missing in this book.
I am really disappointed but well I loved that we got to see Brandon and Wes’s wedding :/ why didn’t we get it in their own POV’s I seriously wanted to hear all the POV and shit, where was Brandon’s family, I have so many questions!! But well I am happy with what I got. I loved that all of my blackcreek boys were in this book. I missed all the fun and Jessie. She is my sunshine. Yeah I am sappy alright! Lol

So, I don’t know whether to recommend this or not, because if you start read Blackcreek series, you won’t able to hold yourself to not read this last book, well you can take my example, all of my trusted reviewers didn’t lied this book that much but STILL I read it. So, I know you’re going to read this whether I write a 5-star review or a 2-star review. :P

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about this. It's not that I didn't like it, I did. It's just that the biggest part of it was about the main characters' families rather than their own life. I would have preferred more Mason-Gavin time.
It had great moments, like the part when Mason takes Gavin for sky-diving:

"And then nothing but quiet peace, the world at his fingertips.
When his feet hit the ground, all Gavin could think was about flying again. He wanted to spend the rest of hos life that way."

I liked Gavin. He struggles to live his life in the way he wants to. He tries and tries to get the best, to please his family and the others, but that's not always achievable. He feels empty and unsatisfied.

Mason was more determined in getting what he wants. He faces his problems and fights his own battles. I liked him giving orders, even if he wasn't the 'top' in this relationship:

"You're gorgeous." Gavin ran a hand down Mason's abs.
"Thanks. So are you. Now sit down so I can put your d*ck in my mouth."

I found the ending a bit rushed and unnatural. So 3.49 stars.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked the characters, although there wasn't always a lot, personality wise, to tell them apart, until they got to the bedroom, where Mason was just the bossiest, toppiest, bottom EVER, which I loved.

I didn't really get why Mason was SO upset about the secret his parents kept from him, felt like an OTT reaction to me, but I've never been in that situation. I really felt for Gavin though, it must be horrible to have your parents feel like his did.

This book had some VERY hot sex, but not too much for the story, I thought it was all just right.

The story was ok. As with all the books in this series there is too much on page sex. Although it's another great narration out of the Audible Escape package I did fast forward through many sex scenes in this and the previous books.

As I always do, I loved the music aspect of the story. I also enjoyed all the cameos of previous characters. But, ths one was my least favorite of the three books. I simply didn't agree with either character's position on their family dynamics.

I'm still super happy the series was added to Audible Escape since it gave me a great incentive to go back and finish the entire series.

3.75 stars..

Really enjoyed this one, but it wasn't as good as the first two books in this series.. I had a good time reading it, but something was missing.

We met Mason in book two- he's the owner of the new bar in Blackcreek and we heard of Gavin in the same book- he's a music teacher who moves to Blackcreek after losing his job.

They're both dealing with family problems and they're tired of pretending to be how their families want them to be.

What did I like in this one?

- The great message behind this story:
description

To seize the day and to live your life, in order not to have regrets in the future.

- Braden's appearances. I so want to re-read his book!

-Music had a big role in this one and I loved how Gavin described the way he felt about it, how much music helped him and how he could be able to communicate through it..

What didn't I like??

- Too much drama. And a few scenes were unnecessary..

-I couldn't stand Gavin's mother.

"It's not being gay that caused those things, it's ignorance."
"That's what the devil wants you to believe, Gavin. That's how he workds. He twists things around, makes you believe in what's wrong"

Overall, this was an enjoyable read. I loved a few scenes, especially .

This is the last book of the Blackcreek series.

I was hoping Isaac would get his book!

I love this series and I'm so sad that it's over. Collide was my first M/M read so this series will always be special to me. Everyone should read this series!

Now- I get that in relationships there may be a total top and/or total bottom. In the early stages of a potential loving, committed, long-term relationship there would be a dialogue between the guys sharing why one may not be versatile in the butt fucking area. A nice chat, everyone understands, kisses and hugs, perfectly fine, on the same page, lot's of I love yous, now roll the fuck over you total bottom.(That's how 2 grown gay adult men would handle things.)

And then there is Mason and Gavin.

I quote Mason "I want you. Make no mistake about that. But there’s one more thing we have to discuss. You said you want me to fuck you. I don’t do the fucking.” THE END, NO discussion, NEVER to be mentioned again.
BTW- they guys fall in love and live happily ever after.

There must be a way I can make money of this- because with books like these I can tell with 100% certainty without looking, that's it's a female author. I'll ponder $$

Dear some LADIES- invest is some gay beta boys. You will, on occasion, be laughed at, but the end result will be so much better.

Mason Alexander thought all he wanted in life was something to call his own...something without the family name attached. So, when he loses his job at a private school for helping out a gay kid, he feels like he lost more than a job. He lost his identity. Blackcreek is a new start for both of them, two men, loyal to a fault, who both feel obligated to people in their lives. What Mason and Gavin don’t expect to find in each other is the place where they can be real.
I really looked forward to this third book in the Blackcreek series since I had really, really liked the first two books and the main characters; but I was surprised at the trouble I was having believing the relationship between Mason and Gavin, as well as their motivations.

There was A LOT of drama. You can't read this and not feel torn in two. Gavin: My heart broke for him with his extremely religious, overly intolerant family...even though it seemed to just run in circles and not actually go anywhere until the very end. Mason: I totally understood him feeling betrayed by his family. They were on so many levels way beyond simply terrible, but I felt that everything was being blown out of proportion, and I just couldn't buy into it. As the mother of a wonderful gay son, who is married to the world's most wonderful man, and that beautiful little girl they have, and another baby soon to join the family...I look at them and have a hard time comprehending parents...sometimes entire families, that can alienate their children of any age, simply because of who they love. Those same gay children that they're ranting at and disowning could rob a bank, steal a car or commit murder and be more readily forgiven by them...but "don't you dare love a person of the same sex!" Sorry about the rant...putting away my soap box now.

A long story short...I loved the first two books, and I really "liked" this one, but it didn't have the same "feelings" that the first two had. I hate to think that this is the end of this series, and it really is only going to be three books long.... but it just didn't have the "finished feeling" that the first two had. Still, it was a very good worthwhile read. Now don't trip over my soapbox:)

Pretend is the 3rd installment of the series Blackcreek, so having read the previous books , I wanted this to be a good ending of the series!!

It was good seeing Noah and Cooper (Collide #1) and Wes and Braden (Stay #2). And yay

But…… Mason and Gavin didn’t work for me much.. I never connected with them. There were so many family issues and quite frankly the story just bored me sometimes…

The thing that kept me going was dirty-talk-bossy-bottom-Mason.. The sexual tension between these guys was hot.

“I have never had to pretend with you. Even from the beginning, you knew who I was. I showed that person to you before I did anyone else. You’re more than I deserve. I want you.

"Now's gonna be when you want to kiss me, music man."

2.5 STARS

The 0.5 star was for the two other couples in the series.

So I was really disappointed with this book because I really loved the first one and thought that the second book is good. This one though was really boring and didn't have anything, really.

So I'm going to list down what I wrote in my notes while reading this book:

1. No to little steam and more like friendship chemistry than love chemistry.

- Seriously though. They only had it when they had that one sex scene. It was like they were just friends who were forcing to had a relationship. I just didn't think they worked as a couple to be honest.

2. One totally random visit from Braden.

- Okay so this one was so annoying. There was one chapter I think where Braden randomly came to Gavin's place just so a "speech" to continue on the story could be said. Like seriously, it felt super forced. Oh and guess what? After that, short advice/speech, Braden left quickly. Like what the hell?

3. DOORMATS. DOORMATS EVERYWHERE. STEP ALL OVER THEM PLEASE. THEY LIKE IT.

- Seriously. It felt like so annoying that they were trying to be themselves then all of a sudden, they couldn't be because they love their parents. I understood Mason's part because he was kind of stupid about his "reason" of being mad at them but Gavin? I couldn't. SERIOUSLY. They were easily manipulated. And how old were they? 30? There were other books with this kind of thing that was handled better to be honest.

4. Too much fucking.

- I love sex and all fucking. Lots of them. Only if done right and all of them were necessary. Here? No.

5. The issues.

- This is what I wrote in my notes in all caps: "Seriously. The issues kept on repeating. Like over and over and over and over and I'm over it." Ugh I was soooooooooooo tired of their shit. I couldn't begin to explain how annoyed I was.

6. Boring af

- af (as fuck). (just wanted to write something here)

7. Isaac's apology.

- I was kind of annoyed how Gavin dismissed his apology was unneeded. Asshole much? It wasn't about knowing Gavin was Mason's or vice versa. It was about understanding, acceptance and all that jazz. I found it so annoying.

The only thing that saved this was the appearance of the other two couples from the first two books. I found it so interesting and wanted to know more about them! Especially Braden and Wes Cooper and Noah were really great too (love them so much). The lines from these 4 were really good and sometimes more interesting than the two leads here.

So yeah, super disappointed. It's not worthy of recommendation but if there will be a fourth book (and probably Isaac's), I will recommend this to be read. Espeecially if it really is about Isaac.

3.5 Stars

I'm feeling a little conflicted over this one. I've never rated a Riley Hart book lower than 4 stars before, but I guess there's a first time for everything. Basically, I didn't love it... But more importantly, I didn't hate it.

I guess my problem is a simple one: I don't generally enjoy stories which heavily revolve around meddling and/or preachy parents. Both Mason and Gavin struggle with being what their parents expect them to be, while also trying to stay true to themselves. This was all very understandable, but I kind of get to a point in these types of situations where my selfish side just says, "screw what they think!!" Easier said than done, of course, and everything the guys went through, here, along with how they reacted to what was happening to them, made perfect sense - it simply frustrated and annoyed me.

Luckily, I liked how real and honest Mason and Gavin were with each other. It seemed natural and effortless for them to open up to one another, even when they were practically strangers. Their seamless fall into romance was easy and uncomplicated (at least when it came to just the two of them and how they were feeling).

The sex was, as always, smoking hot. Although, I wasn't too keen on how "bossy" Mason was, or the fact that I felt he got his way in the bedroom all the time. .

So, even though I had my issues, it was still a good addition to a solid series. Nothing will beat my love for Stay, though.
