The Secrets in My Scowl

Rate this book
Sparks ignite and tempers flare when a sexy, optimistic wedding planner moves his business in across the hall from a jilted, divorce lawyer’s practice. “Look smart ass. This is the last time I’m going to remind you about breaking sections of the lease. If there’s a next time, I won’t stop until you and your frilly, white wedding shit is thrown out of here. Do you got it?!” Wylde looked in Jacob’s pained eyes and answered in his deep voice. “Yeah, counselor. I got it.” From high school, up until he became a successful attorney Jacob Snowden was convinced that love had it out for him. “Everyone left,” were the words he lived by. His mother, his high school sweetheart, his father, and his fiancé, all left Jacob just when he felt it was safe to let down his guard. Not any longer. Jacob was a determined man, set at keeping people at a distance. If his six foot one, military-made body didn’t scare people off, his permanent scowl surely did. At almost forty, Jacob’s social life was non-existent, but he told himself his work fulfilled him. He helped people get out of their loveless marriages. Jacob Snowden was one of the best divorce lawyers on the east coast and was damn proud of it. So, imagine his disdain when a wedding planner moves into the suite directly adjacent to his… an insanely masculine, male wedding planner. Wylde Sterling had made quite a name for himself in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, working for a wedding planner that catered to the elite. He was known for his charm and impeccable taste. Yep, he was incredible at giving couples the wedding of their dreams. But he wanted nothing more than to plan his own. After striking out in love more times than he cared to admit, Wylde decided to start his own business in a new city, hoping Richmond would give him a fresh start. Things started out wonderfully – until he started to piss off the angry divorce attorney next door. Wylde could see past Jacob’s mean scowl, knowing there was a reason for it. It was the man’s defense mechanism, his means of keeping people away. Everything in Wylde told him to stay away, but he believed Jacob just needed to meet a man who had been hurt as badly as he had. This title is a standalone that ends in an HEA

The m/m genre is a favorite of mine but also something I can be very picky about. So when I find a good author for the genre I practically jump for joy. And trust me when I say A.E Via is an author worth jumping for! I loved the books I've read from her in the past, and I loved this new one.

Jacob and Wylde had some amazing chemistry and I loved seeing them trying to fight it. Jacob was the asshole of the book, but also the one that I related to the most. His past was a little heartbreaking and I felt for him throughout the whole story. I wanted him to finally get his HEA and live life to the fullest, so when Wylde entered the picture and showed him that the way he was living wasn't the best option for getting over you're past, I loved him too. They were just perfect together and had a great connection.

This is a definite recommend from me! I loved the relationship that these characters had and I really enjoyed how the author put them together. I think this would also be a great book for any reader new to the m/m genre.

The Secrets in my Scowl is a fun book with humor and romance along with a grumpy MC that has given up on Love and a happy MC who is in the business of love and HEA. This book fits nicely into the grumpy to lovable trope and AE Via keeps us entertained with their antics.

The MC are Jacob & Wylde. Jacob is a successful - top-notch Divorce attorney who never loses in court and doesn't believe in love. No he has been left just one too many times by people who claimed to have loved him. He lives for his job. He doesn't have time for romance anymore after being burned and left by men who were suppose to love him, a mother who left him and his dad with no reason, and a Dad who lost interest in him as a boy and never got it back. Jacob has some severe abandonment issues. Meaning, he closes himself off to avoid ever being abandoned again. He doesn't need anyone and he certainly doesn't need the sexy, new tenant in his office building who believes in happily ever afters.

Wylde, a wedding planner who recently relocated and is starting up his own business. Wylde has been looking for his elusive prince charming in all the wrong places. When he meets his new business neighbor, a gorgeous - yet very grumpy divorce attorney, he knows that there is something special about him right from the start. He just has to figure out a way to get past Jacobs hard shell and defensive techniques he has perfected over the years.

Watching these two dance their tango as they played the game of get to know you, stop hating you, I think I like you..was entertaining. Some parts felt a bit rushed and there were some time jumps that made the story a bit jagged. Watching Jacob slowly self destruct, was pretty emotional as this guy just couldn't seem to catch a break. Then watching him learn to love again and actually be happy, learn to live - was a welcome change from his Mr. Grump persona.  The chemistry between these two was off the charts and the sex was worthy of ovary explosions!

I felt like the book ended a little abruptly - I would have liked a bit longer of an exploration of their HEA - we got so much of the story watching them get there it would have been nice to get a fair amount of happy after all the sadness.

Overall a solid story that I do recommend - 4.5 stars

I really liked the cover. I really liked the title. The blurb sounded like fun.
Unfortunately, for me, the book didn't follow suit.
I'm sorry to say that there's something about AE Via's writing style that simply isn't for me. The story held so much potential, but I was sorely disappointed with its execution.

First the MCs don't even meet until 28%. Amongst other stuff my patience was drained by uninteresting court cases that had nothing to do with the plot. There was so much telling without showing I started to get edgy. That feeling increased and magnified in the last third of the book.

Too many weird events thrown together, the MCs acting either in an irritating or strange way (Jacob, for example, had the emotional maturity of a 5 year old) and some incredible illogical behaviour made for uncomfortable reading. In fact I could never relate the characters and the way they acted to their age. If they'd been 10 years younger, I might have understood them better.

I just didn't get Jacob and Wylde. There was no reason for them to fall in love. Yes, I get the lust, but love? Jacob was really extremely horrible to people, but Wylde just 'saw' through all that and psycho-analyzed the reasons for his behaviour in about 15 minutes? And then he always 'knew' exactly what Jacob needed?

There were so many inconsistencies in the plot and the character development (Jacob going from mega-a*****e to cloyingly sweet) my neck started hurting from shaking my head.
And A.E. Via's writing is definitely not for me.

This book has got a very good overall rating, so I have to assume it's a case of "It's me, not you." But I don't think I can read another book by this author. Sorry.

Let’s start with the good. Tor Thom did a great job at narrating the multiple characters in the story.

The two main characters don’t meet until around the 30% mark. It gives plenty of time to get to understand these heroes and their personalities before they become a couple. Please be aware that one of the main characters is in another relationship beginning of the story.

The main relationship here was written very well, and I liked these two men. Polar opposites, a wedding planner and a divorce attorney. What made the story uncomfortable was Jacob’s previous partners continue to be a part of his current life. For over five years he basically has a friends with benefits buddy. Whenever Jacob calls or texts him, they hook up.

Jacob’s reasoning for becoming closed off and heart-hardened against any kind of loving relationship feels slightly contrived. His mother left when he was a boy. He has a couple shitty relationships that ends in heartache.

Wylde is a carefree, fun to be around kind a guy that you’d expect to find in a wedding planner. He is used to drama in his profession, so when he meets Jacob, and Jacob is a complete ass, Wylde isn’t bothered by him at all. There is an instant attraction between the two of them, that slowly becomes more.

What really made the story crash and burn was the ending. Huge spoilers below:

My feelings about the “BOYS” in this book....>

Be real now. Who doesn’t want to eat Wylde like an ice-cream? And add Jacob as that super sweet (Grumpy) cherry on top...oh boy..it’s GOOOOOOOD!!!!

Now if I should start with all the things this Story made me feel I’ll be writing an essay of epic proportions. Seeing that there is no shortage of great reviews already writing on the topic, I’ll just keep it short.

I’m smiling like a fool and enjoying every darn minute of it. I liked it so much I could even look past the “little” things that niggled.

Wylde is fabulous. From the gold hoop in his lip to the deep voice and the man bun... (Which brings me to that cover??? Don’t you just LOVE it?? )

Wylde is just what Jacob needs and I loved that he didn’t back down.

Jacob...what can I say? He’s closed off and brooding and I LOVED him. Simply put, he will be one of those characters that will stay with me for a long time.

Good stuff. Good good stuff.

This story has a whole lot of hurt and painful moments. Jacob made me clutch at my chest quite a few times when you see what hides behind the tuff guy facade. My personal feelings? If he wasn’t so darn bull headed things could have gone way smoother in his life, but he is who he is. It’s his personality, and I loved seeing Wylde trample all over his walls.

Read the darn book! Yes, there are OTT moments, it’s not perfect but what the hell. Life isn’t perfect.

3,5 Stars from me :)
I really enjoyed this one, than again, I seem to enjoy pretty much everything A.E Via writes.

We have one bitter 38 year old divorce lawyer, Jacob, who has been scorned by love more than once...hence the bitter :)

And we have a 30 year old wedding planner, Wylder, also scorned by love. He however sees things a bit more optimistic and still believes his handsome prince must be out there somewere :)

They meet when Wylder moves his bussiness into the same building as Jacob's practice. Not everyone is quite charmed by Jacob's brooding and harsh personality. Wylder sees something more in him though and he is determined to be patient and get to know him better.

Once they do, they are the perfect example of opposites attract. Even though I have to say that they were not that different. Jacob may appear to be this unfeeling bastard, but he really isn't. I actually liked him right from the start. Inside he is a real good and nice man that has been done wrong a time too many. I also loved Wylders abbility to kick ass !!

There isn't a lot of angst in this one. Certainly not relationship wise. It's sweet but not too sugarly. I would have liked a bit more towards the end, because it ended quite fast. I also think this is one of A.E. Via's more milder books steamwise. I have read the "Nothing but trouble" series and those books have way more steam.

All in all a very enjoyable 3,5 star read.

Now I am gonna patiently wait for Nothing but trouble 5....Gentry's book. Can't wait !!!

A.E. Via has a way with writing a tortured hero that draws me in and makes me forgive even the biggest of jackasses.

It's no different this time around with Jacob Snowden, who takes being obstreperous and difficult to new highs, yet Via made me feel for him and hope that he gets a happily-ever-after.

Wylde Sterling was a joy to read from the beginning. Reading about his failed dates was both funny and cringe-worthy, because I've been on those kinds of dates and totally related. I loved that Wylde is able to see the hurt beneath the gruff, the heart beneath Jacob's scowl, and how he slowly works his way into Jacob's heart.
“Point is, when you find someone brave enough not to be scared off by your fake male bravado. A person who will get in your face and tell you, ‘You’re going to love me whether you want to or not.’ Those are the keepers. The ones that aren’t willing to fight or put in the work for you, sacrifice for you…those are the ones you keep your guard up on.”

I did have some niggles with the story, including some obvious editing issues, and a side storyline with an ex, and one with Jacob's mother, being dropped without, to me, proper conclusions.

However, the biggest thing that annoyed me is the timeline of the story. It goes from "The Past…" in the prologue to the "Present…" but then a couple of chapters later to "Five years later…" which made absolutely no sense to me. How could it be five years later? We were in the present, but now we're in the future? But it's the main part of the story? Then, just before the epilogue we jump to "The Future…" What?

The story starts with Jacob in high school, picks up after he's spent eight years in the military, then jumps five years after that for the bulk of the story. It just would have made more sense to me to start the prologue in the "Past," show time had moved forward eight years, then gone on to the present. But maybe I'm overthinking it all.

overthinking

But overall, once I put aside my niggles and just let myself enjoy it, the story kept me glued from start to finish.

With a light amount of angst, some hot passionate encounters, a little bit of humor, and some feels thrown in for good measure the HEA doesn't come easy, but it does come sweetly in the end.

all-the-feels

This story is so damn beautiful. This book follows a divorce attorney named Jacob Snowden who has been hurt so many times and has difficulty trusting anyone in a romantic relationship to the point where he has closed himself off from the world. Wylde is a wedding planner and he has just moved in across the hall from Jacob's office and tension rises as Wylde and Jacob argue and try to figure out how to work across the hall from each other in peace. Jacob is very confrontational and he always seems angry, but Wylde is curious about him and thinks there is more to him than just the frown on his face.

This story took me by surprise, because it started off so slow. I was reading this book on and off for weeks because I couldn't get into it and I disliked the writing style so much in the beginning and I thought the main characters were so hard to relate to and I just wasn't enjoying it... until around the 100-ish page mark when the story finally picks up. This is definitely a slow-build romance, extremely slow build. Which I actually prefer, this is far from insta-love.

I adore Jacob and Wylde's romance so much. It takes a long time for anything to happen between them, but when it finally does, oh my gosh, they're so adorable. I enjoyed all the drama with Jacob's back story in Phoenix, Arizona and I really felt terrible for Jacob throughout most of this story. Of course, I'm a sucker for a good office romance, and this book definitely has that appeal. I think it was interesting that this book showed all of Jacob's previous relationships before we are introduced to Wylde. I think it might've worked better to start the story when he's already a lawyer and show flashbacks of his relationships with Mark and Patrick, but that's just me being nit-picky.

I really did love this story, even though it is a slow start and I did have some issues with it, I really did enjoy it. I ship Jacob and Wylde so hard.

I know it's been almost two months since I BRed this book with my ladies Karen and Christelle but still... Not remembering anything about this book without having to read through all our comments isn't a good sign, right?

Well, now after going through our BR thread I remember that the editing wasn't the best (and I don't usually notice this) and - especially in the beginning - there were weird time jumps that made me think I missed something.

There were also two negative comments about bisexuality that made me angry. One of them was: "The biggest problem was Ken was bisexual. Wylde preferred to be with a gay man. Last thing he needed was his man to suddenly request a woman to join them in bed." Yeah, just NO!! Can we please just stop with these misconceptions and prejudices?!?!

This being said, the book started out quite good, dragged in the middle, and went a little OTT and clichéd in the end. There was a tiny bit of angst, some humorous and sweet moments, some sexy times, and a HEA.

I didn't hate it but without my ladies keeping me company, it sure would have taken me much longer to get through it.

“Okay, this is something we’ll never talk about or think about again,” Jacob said and hid his face and his bright smile in his pillow.
“You came first.”
“I thought you were getting ready to give it to me.”
“I was!” Wylde yelled, hiding under Jacob’s armpit, still unable to stop his own laughing. “Next time I’ll actually get it in the hole.”

This was a an amazing book, Jacob finally found his one and truly one worthy of his love and trust. Quite a few serious and funny parts to this and what I liked best was at the end there weren’t any loose ends of the story the reader was left wondering about everything and everyone was explained. Jacob and Wilde complimented each other PERFECTLY!

Another fun BR with my besties : Karen and Josy !!!!

And 3 stars for this new release from A.E.Via. Not an “action-packed romance this time but an “opposite attract to each other” romance.
Jacob is almost 40, a divorce lawyer, and so bitter after being abandoned by his parents and former lovers that he became an angry and lonely man.
And then, arrives in the office next door Wylder, 30 year old and a wedding planner and, even thought he can’t find his “man”, still hopes and is all fun and optimism.
It started well, but then, my interest went up and down. Up because lots of potential at the beginning and I really loved how Wylde rallied up to Jacob when his father died. Down because I felt like there were too much “clichés” and OTT behaviors.
In overall, a good read, but not as good as defined by deceit.

PS : Shari-Amor, once again, thank you for this gift. Hugs to you !!

Again another great book from this author who is fast moving up on my " must buy" list. I loved this book - it was as painful, raw and so honest. Jacob had been hurt by love that he built his own fortress and made sure no one was able to breach it. He had no relationships, no family and only one friend who he only saw when an " itch needed to be scratched " Along comes Wylde the wedding planner who sets up an office across from Jacob's which did not go down so well. Wylde also feeling the pain from a traitorous love recognized something in Jacob and a friendship developed. As Jacob let down his walls and Wylde began to look deeper the friendship morphed into something more. This was beautiful and extremely well written. ❤❤

I was given a copy of this book free by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

Ok, got to say it. I loved it!
I loved grumpy Jacob and lovely Wylde.
The book start as Jacob is getting ready to go to college. We have insights as to what made him the way he is today.
The beginning of the relationship was a bit bumpy. Jacob being his normal self but Wlyde being upbeat. The contrasts between the two offices and the staff.
Yes, parts of this story were sad but there were also lots of lol moments, eg sex took me to the ER.
In a way its a shame that this is a stand alone as I would like to have seen more of these two.
This author is quickly becoming an autobuy.

DO NOT JUDGE THIS BOOK BY THE TITLE!!! I almost passed this one up because of the asinine title but it came highly recommended. I figured I’d read a few chapters and then shelf it. I’m so glad I stuck with it, turned out to be super ADORABLE!!! I was immediately transfixed by the story. I loved the no bs connection between the 2 mc’s. My heart ached for Jacob, he truly deserved his HEA. It had just enough angst to keep me on edge. Overall, a great read indeed.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*Might contain spoilers*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱

This book is about divorce lawyer Jacob Snowden (39) and wedding planner Wylde Sterling (31). Jacob has had bad luck when it comes to love; his mom abandoning him and his father, his father becoming a mean drunk, his then boyfriend dumped him and his to be fiance cheated on him. All this has made him bitter and made him given up on love. Wylde hasn't had much luck either; boyfriend cheated on him. But he refuses to give up on love, certain that love will come his way. When the two finally met, it is full attraction, but the past has made Jacob put up so many walls around his heart. Can Wylde break those walls down and make Jacob believe in love again?
“Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different.”

Overall, this book was alright, but it took a long time (28% or something) before the main characters met. I get that we were supposed to get a deep connection and get to know Jacob's past, but I almost felt like it was wasted time. Things started to look up when they met, as Jacob's attraction for Wylde made him even meaner, but it didn't take long before we saw changes in him after he met Wylde. Wylde was cute, optimistic, smart, funny and good hearted. He lights up the room and lights up Jacob's heart. Together they were adorable. Story-wise, it was a bit boring, I struggled to focus. To really get into it; got distracted by other thing. So something was definitely missing from the book. Perhaps I just wanted more action? Or for Jacob not to change so fast?
“It’s customary to stand when a lady enters and leaves the room, Mr. Snowden.” Jacob cut his dark eyes to her. “If and when I’m in the presence of a lady, I’ll be sure to do that.”

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (A) Contemporary Romance (M/M)
Series: - Standalone.
Love triangle? -
Cheating? -
HEA? -
Favorite character? - Wylde Sterling.
Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Sure.
Would I recommend this book/series? - Sure.
Will I read this again in the future? - No.
Rating - 3 stars.

This was another awesome buddy read with my beautiful besties Josy and Christelle. I really enjoyed this one, but I'm a sap for that story where the embittered, heartless soul gets blindsided by love...yeah, I'm a hopeless romantic at the end of the day.

Jacob's a divorce lawyer and he's no fan of love. Unfortunately his life's been filled with heartbreak and disappointments so he's made the decision to keep the world at arms length while standing behind a brick wall and he thinks that he's doing just fine with this until he gets a new business neighbor...a wedding planner...seriously? Could there be a better match...I think not. This is not just any wedding planner either this is Wylde, who has a sister named Star and a brother named Warrus...it's a hippie thing, ok?

Wylde is...well...he's...Wylde. He's almost perfect...I mean seriously almost Mary Calmes...Jory perfect, so if this is something that bothers you...you've been warned, personally if it's done right I can totally get behind the idea. I did actually have one little issue with Wylde and that was this...
The biggest problem was Ken was bisexual. Wylde preferred to be with a gay man. Last thing he needed was his man to suddenly request a woman to join them in bed.
Seriously, Wylde. I expected better than this from you. Being committed to your relationship is not a gay, straight or bi issue, it's a personal issue...so for this I say shame on you.

Moving right along, as I was saying, Wylde is almost perfect...he's gorgeous, has a deep sexy voice that'll melt your insides (and let me just say I hope I get the chance to check this one out on audio) anyways, back to Wylde...as I was saying he's perfect and he wants someone to love but not just anyone. Nope, our Wylde is looking for Mr. Right, not Mr. Right-Now but one look at Jacob tells him that in spite of his growly, scowly self Jacob may very well be that Mr. Right that he's looking for and Wylde just needs to hang in there and be patiently persistent.

Admittedly there were a couple of other things that niggled at my brain but whether it was my mood, the fact that this was a buddy read and so just a hella' lot of fun, or a little of both, they really didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. The first thing being that there was a stretch in the middle of the book that left me tinsy weensy bit bored and that was Jacob and Wylde's dating/getting to know you phase, it just seemed a little blasé. Fortunately right about the time I was feeling a little wft? about it the story started to pick up and I happily moved on. My other little niggle was the whole issue around Jacob's mother's disappearance and why she left...sorry, nope I just couldn't buy that. She disappeared from Jacob's life when he was a teenager and now we're 20+ years later and she reappears and the reason we're given was just a big old 'nope' for me, I just couldn't buy it. Fortunately the story didn't really dwell on it for too long and once again I happily moved on with the story.

So overall it was 4 stars for the book and once again a big thanks to Josy and Christelle for sharing this adventure in reading with me. It was awesome as always ladies and I'll see you on the 18th at my place when we start our next adventure.

By the way I found a song for Wylde and Jocob...

I dnfed at around 30% because it bothers me when characters act gross about bisexual men.

"Please don’t let us hurt each other."

A cynical divorce lawyer and a romantic wedding planner in the same building? That’s the kind of tension I look for in romance stories. Jacob and Wylde had very opposite personalities yet such an amazing chemistry.

I think the reason they were able to connect with each other so well was the fact that they both were hurt by other people in the past and their differences came by the way each of them chose to handle the mistreatment they received in life.

I enjoyed their relationship so much and I was definitely rooting for them especially after I saw Jacob’s character development and the improvement his behavior had after meeting Wylde. Seeing the way Wylde’s love and affection had a healing effect to Jacob was heartwarming.

I also enjoyed their sex scenes, they were definitely hot but I liked them more due to the fact that they were realistic and true to the age that the characters were, no endless orgasms, no cheesy big dialog of what they need and how much they need it during the act. I even liked the slight awkwardness between them, it portrayed nicely how every couple needs some time to feel comfortable with each other.

What I didn’t like were the first chapters in this book, thanks to them the plot of the book took a bit too much to pick up and it was some time before we saw Jacob meet and interact with Wylde. I didn’t like the fact that the author describes in such detail Jacob’s previous relationships to the point where we see their sex scenes and I think it makes it difficult for the reader to invest in Jacob’s current relationship. It would have been more interesting if the book begun immediately with the present Jacob and left the reason why he is so cynical a mystery for Wylde to discover as he gets closer and closer to him.

I also didn’t like the fact that the reason why Wylde chose not to date a bisexual was because he thought a bisexual would force him to have a threesome with a girl. When someone is bisexual it doesn’t mean that that person will necessarily have a threesome with a guy and a girl, they can have a monogamous relationship with a girl or they can have a monogamous relationship with a guy.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, this was one of those "I was only going to read a couple of chapters and see if I like it, and then I couldn't put it down, and read all night" books!

This was practically A Christmas Carol, only with no Christmas, or spirits, and no greed, but Jacob had such a negative, Scrooge like attitude. He was outright rude on numerous occasions, and there's really no excuse for his behavior. But now I'm going to say that, I actually did understand. He was trying to hard to protect himself, that his anger and pain forced him to push everyone away before they could get too close. Wylde showed up in his life at just the right time, when his relationship with his friend/fuck buddy Patrick was changing and Jacob was falling apart.

Wylde was just a delight! He was an ocean of calm and sweetness and light, and he was just what Jacob needed. I loved the slow burn that went on here, watching Wylde creep right inside Jacob's defenses. Sure, Jacob seemed to change overnight (and all it took was Wylde's ass, not a few silly spirits!), but it made sense if you were paying attention. Jacob pushed everyone away, but he positively ached for love and affection.

I did have a few little niggles, which is what kept this from being 5 stars. I had hoped that Jacob's first boyfriend would have cropped back up in the story, especially when , and I found Jacob's mother's reason for leaving them very silly. All that time they could have had together, lost! I'd rather those questions have remained unanswered, because they just added a bit more drama in a guy's life that already had enough.

Still, all in all, I really enjoyed this book, and indeed, could not put it down, reading all night, and when I was already tired, at that!

3.5 stars. This was a very different type of story for AE Via. It was much more of a romantic love story than her past, more action oriented books. I like the second half of the story far more than the first half. The first few chapters were about Jacob's earlier life and the events that turned him into a very angry, closed-off, rude and dismissive person. He was also cynical about his clients and somewhat sleazy as a divorce lawyer. Wylde's character was much more likable as an easygoing, ambitious wedding planner. They didn't even meet until about a third of the way in and it was not an auspicious meeting! That part of the story did drag somewhat while I was reading.

Wylde mostly ignores Jacob's pissed at the world, nasty attitude but he's not a doormat either; more of a peacemaker but he stands up for himself. Jacob begins to change his attitude under Wylde's influence and begins to act more human. It was a little fast for a personality change but overall, it's paced well, and there's a slower burn relationship. I liked that part and there was no instalove either! There was minor angst and it ended up as a decent hurt/comfort read. That said, I still had some issues over the first half of the book.

Jacob's character was a bit too OTT, which is typical for AE, as she tends to write larger-than-life characters. The anger, meanness and attitude of Jacob got tiring pretty quickly and Wylde's influence came just in time, before I tossed my tablet. Then, I was liking Wylde and enjoying learning his character, when this line pops up during a date, before he met Jacob:

"The biggest problem was Ken was bisexual. Wylde preferred to be with a gay man. Last thing he needed was his man to suddenly request a woman to join them in bed."

Short rant ahead: I've read so much about bi-erasure and stereotypes about bisexuality and this just ticked me right off. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion but I dislike stereotypes of any kind. I don't know of any reason to perpetuate the myth that bisexuals will never be able to be faithful in a same sex pairing; that they'll always require sex with both men and women. Or that they'll always end up leaving a same sex partner for a heteronormative pairing and are likely to cheat with someone of the same sex. It's wrong to judge anyone because of race or religion and it's not right to make assumptions about sexuality either. Cheating has nothing to do with anything but being a shitty person. Rant over.

It spoiled my enjoyment for a good part of the book, though and spoiled my view of Wylde as a character. On the positive side , I know AE Via fans should be fairly happy with it and it does make for a lighter, more angst-free read.

This one was good! Just released. It does have some editing errors, but it's a solid story with well developed characters.
You get to see glimpses of Jacob's past, which helps understanding why he is like he is at almost forty.

Jacob

And then we meet Wylde... he's just adorbs and exactly what serious Jacob needs to give love another chance. Good thing for all of us that Jacob is also exactly what Wylde has been looking for for so long.

Wylde is 31 and Jacob's complete opposite with his perma-cheer and optimism. He's also been burned by love, but, unlike Jacob, he's never stopped believing.

Wylde

This is not a very steamy book but I LOVE how the sexy times for these two always felt like they are making love and not just having sex.
