Pongwiffy #2

Rate this book

My third Kaye Umansky review is another chapter book for LKS2 readers on the theme of witches, but in contrast to 'Witch for a Week', 'Broomnapped' celebrates all things revolting in the fantasy world of magic. Umanksy transports us to a kingdom of goblins, trolls and genies where our senses are repulsed by the foullest of smells, sights and tastes. Employing a gamut of descriptive language and wonderfully imaginative adjectives, this tale of goblin and genie subterfuge at the witches' expense provides endless WAGOLLs for pupils' descriptive writing and creative use of language. Simultaneously however, Umanksy employs suspense, jumping between locations to update us on concurrent adventures, and almost incessant pantomime humour to keep her young readers thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. Our protagonist witch Pongwiffy is a lover of feculence and putrefaction which is the deep envy of most other residents of Witchway Wood: her home is surrounded by a legendary Wall of Smell to protect it. However her belongings come under threat when a genie manages to reverse her protective magic and encourages anyone and everyone to steal them while she is away. When her friends come to her rescue, she realises that it is actually they - and not her worldly goods - that matter most to her. Hidden beneath the surface of humour, there are important PSHE messages about respecting and working well with others; prioritising others' feelings over coming out on top; understanding each others' differences; and recognising each others' strengths and weaknesses, offering support when others need it. As a child, I was always a huge fan of books whose endpapers provided maps of the places they describe, and Chris Smedley's illustrations here not only depict this but even a Hollywood movie-style cast list of characters' drawings and 'Where's Wally?'-style double-page spreads depicting faithfully the wealth of detail in the scenes Umansky describes. The author uses mis-spelled and abbreviated words constantly to reflect the accent of some characters in direct speech (e.g. 'She's gorrit comin' to 'er she 'as'); whilst this is entertaining, teachers might have to take care that children's own spelling was not led astray by this, especially when the book does also contain a number of genuine typographical errors with regard to apostrophes! Nevertheless, as ever with the Kaye Umansky books I've encountered, 'Broomnapped' will leave young readers richly rewarded for the effort they put into reading it, and keen to dive into another of her books, or similar authors'. Among themes teachers could develop around the book are travel and journeys, celebrations and Hallowe'en, animals and our relationship with them, where we live and how to consider our impact on others, and even entrepreneurship and business acumen: a wide and adaptable range of learning opportunities that stretch broadly across the expanse of the National Curriculum.

I think this book is interesting, the witches have weir names thought. Woody, Pongwiffy’s broom is broomnapped by the goblins, Woody hears their plans and warns the witches. Though the goblins plan is another failure. Ali Pali the genie knows about the wall of smells that doesn’t let anyone through. But everyone wanted to get past, he blocks the smell and gets a lot of money from the creatures who came into the dump, the money was used so he could buy himself a new lamp, the witches find out though and stop him.

Another mad cap adventure with Pongwiffy. These books give off strong Discworld type vibes. Which came first? DiscWorld I think?
