Who would have thought an old woman with a one eyed crow could wield such power and create such terror? Nobody in the quiet Welsh town of Penarfon did, and certainly not Dafydd Davies and his gang. So when the crone turned up at Dafydd's granddad's pub demanding compensation for a horse, a horse that had had to be put down because of an accident Dafydd's gang had caused, Dafydd had laughed right along with the rest of the regulars. That was when things started to go wrong. Dreadfully wrong.
I've been reading a few shorter stories lately and this one caught my eye. Young Dav Davies is his grandfather’s heir and he’s determined that he’ll be everything his granddad wants; loyal, honest and unafraid. However Dav finds himself in a tricky situation when his loyalty to a friend puts him in grave danger from an elderly one-eyed gypsy and a terrible curse. As Dav wakes each morning with a shovel in hand and mud on his pyjamas an evil crow watches his progress and his grandfather slips further into the old crone's clutches. Can Dav save his granddad and himself? ...well I won’t spoil the story. This is a chilling tale, a real atmospheric spine-tingler narrated skilfully with all the suspense you’d expect from such a clever little horror. I could imagine this being orated around a crackling log fire at Halloween. Recommended for all those who love the traditional ‘Hammer House of Horror/Tales of the Unexpected’ style story - this time with an additional twist in the tale.
When gypsies come to town, a boy tosses a rock at the procession to show his disdain … and spooks a horse. All mayhem ensues! Someone dies and someone has to answer for that death and boy, does it ever get out of hand …
Really don’t want to give this one away! Discover the meaning of the left eye yourself. Go on!
Brilliant writing, seriously imaginative, spooky, nail-biting and bated breath stuff! AND, a twist in the tale, I swear to you, you will NOT see coming!
Wow!!! This is a perfect story to tell on Halloween. It's so spooky that the hairs on my arms stood up while I was reading it. Gypsies have always had a reputation for being able to curse anyone who does them wrong, but most don't take them seriously, regarding them with contempt. Owen and Dafydd Davies learned the hard way that gypsies aren't to be trifled with, and if you dare,be prepared to pay the price. Excellent story!!!
A short story that gets under your skin. I read it at bedtime not recommended if you want to get some sleep. The twist in the tale expertly executed again by RRJ.
