This is a story about a person who used to be an ambition-less government clerk and how he evolved into a management staff in a corporate jungle. The role his wife played in the transformation, the person he used to be and how the internal conflicts torn him, the colleagues and relationships in office.
The interesting part is even after 30 years of publication this book is relevant and tell the story of internal struggle as well as corporate rat race in offices.

About the author

Shankar's real name is Mani Shankar Mukherjee. Sankar is a very popular writer in the Bengali language. He grew up in Howrah district of West Bengal, India.
Shankar's father died while Shankar was still a teenager, as a result of which Shankar became a clerk to the last British barrister of the Calcutta High Court, Noel Frederick Barwell. The experience of working under Mr. Barwell provided the material for his first book Koto Ojanare (কত অজানারে), translated as The Great Unknown.
During 1962, Shankar conceived the idea of writing the novel Chowringhee on a rainy day at the waterlogged crossing of Central Avenue and Dalhousie - a busy business district in the heart of Kolkata.
Many of Shankar's works have been made into films. Some notable ones are - Chowringhee, Jana Aranya (জন-অরণ্য, translated as The Middleman) and Seemabaddha (সীমাবদ্ধ, out of which the last two were directed by Satyajit Ray.

শঙ্করের লেখার সাথে পরিচয় অনেক আগেই। দারুণ শক্তিশালী এই লেখকের উপন্যাস তীরন্দাজের পটভূমি মধ্য আশির দশকের কলকাতায় হাভার্ড ইস্টার্ন লিমিটেড নামের কোম্পানি এবং সেই কোম্পানিতে চাকুরিরত মানুষদের নিয়ে। মজার ব্যাপার হলো তিরিশ বছর পরেও এই কাহিনী পড়ার সময় মনে হয় না যে পেছনে ফেলে আসা কোন সময়ের কাহিনী পড়ছি, এই কাহিনী সমসাময়িক এবং আরো তিরিশ বছর পরেও তা সমসাময়িক থাকবে। এই কাহিনী চিরায়ত আদর্শ এবং চাহিদার দ্বন্দ। এবং জীবনের চাহিদার কারণে মানুষের বদলে যাওয়ার গল্প। একই সাথে এই গল্প মধ্যবিত্ত বাঙ্গালীর চাকুরির নিশ্চয়তার মাঝে সুখ খোঁজার গল্প। উচ্চাশা কিভাবে মানুষকে বদলে দেয়, কিভাবে মানুষ চাহিদার সীমাহীন চক্রে আবদ্ধ হয়ে পড়ে এবং কিভাবে সুখের সন্ধান করে মাস শেষের বেতনে আর কোম্পানির দেওয়া সুযোগ সুবিধায়।

এই বইয়ের ২য় উপন্যাস হচ্ছে লক্ষ্যভ্রষ্ট । অসাধারন একটি মনস্ত্বাতিক উপন্যাস। তীরন্দাজের ঠিক বিপরীত একজন লক্ষ্যভ্রষ্ট মানুযকে নিয়ে, তার পলায়নপর মনোবৃত্তির পিছনের কাহিনী নিয়ে। যেভাবে লেখক লিখেছেন তা অসাধারন, প্রথম পুরুষে লেখা। যদিও কাহিনী অনেকটাই আঁচ করা যায় কিন্তু লেখার ধরন এবং গল্পবলা, চরিত্র বিশ্লেষণ অসাধারন।
