Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.

This is definitely my kind of book. Two characters who are struggling in their daily lives for different reasons.I didn't find it particularly dark although there is some sensitive, thought provoking subject matter.

Kell is working as a undercover Cop in a gay club trying to obtain information to bring down the club's owner. One of the men close to the
top takes a shine to Kell and he finds himself giving into Marek's violent demands in the hope of gaining his trust and getting some insight in the club's business.Add into the mix his truely despicable brother whose sole purpose in life is driven by his hatred of Kell.

Gethin is a former musician now working as a Private Investigator. He was in foster care from a young age.His life definitely hasn't been a bed of roses and he's now having to deal with his ex Jonnie and to say the situation is complicated is an understatement.

Both men cut quite lonely, sad figures and I felt for both their situations. They meet when Gethin is helping a friend out, working as a waiter at a party Kell is at.The attraction between them is obvious and after their first sexual encounter they agree to a casual, sex only involvement. The plot is a good one as the two men's worlds collide.

This definitely isn't a romance for the majority of the book although the more their lives become intertwined the more they become to acknowledge it's not just about sex.On that note, let me say the sex is pretty damn hot......it's raw, dirty and passionate, just how I like my men to be!

Like I said, one of the subject matters in particular was very difficult to read about and I think the Author perfectly captured the last scene between those involved.

Would I recommend this one?

100% yes if you're a fan of this Author and like something a bit edgier. But if you're into fluffy M/M reads probably not.

There’s angst, and then there’s ANGST. This book is the all-caps version. It’s dark, brooding, and depressing, with no happiness on the horizon. A HEA lurks on the last few pages, but first you have to trudge through the Swamp of Sadness.

Warning tags:

Gethin is a private investigator who lives in a sad little flat. He wants to help people and often takes on messy cases that hardly pay for his time. The one bright spot in Gethin’s life is his friend Angel, owner of a party planning agency and a sassy force of nature.

The relationship Gethin has with his ex, Jonnie, is . . . complicated. And that’s a huge understatement. Jonnie loves Gethin and thinks Gethin loves him, but Gethin hates Jonnie, resents Jonnie, yet guilt eats at him, and he can’t pull away. You’ll see why.

Jonnie’s story is poignant and heartbreaking. I was a sobbing mess when Despite knowing that Jonnie cheated on Gethin, that he was selfish, impetuous, and reckless, I wanted to take his hurt away.

Gethin meets Kell at a swanky party where he’s subbing as a (very grumpy) waiter to help out Angel. Kell is an undercover cop posing as a security guard at a nightclub that the authorities suspect is a hotbed of abuse, prostitution, and drugs.

Gethin and Kell’s first sexual encounter is not romantic; it’s awkward and edgy, and ends with a fist fight. For most of the story, Gethin and Kell are fuck-buddies only. The sexual chemistry between them is explosive.

They grow closer, but their fragile trust is built on secrets and half-truths. Gethin, especially, is so wrapped up in Jonnie, he’s hiding in shadows. Kell and Gethin are remarkably well drawn characters, and their despair feels real.

As Gethin investigates a shady accountant and a runaway teen, all roads lead back to Kell. The many side plots are connected; you just have to be patient.

There are so many unsavory characters in this book, I couldn’t decide whom I hated the most, but I think the honor goes to Kell’s psychopath of a brother, a vile, nasty fuckwat unfit for any place but hell. Marcus, Kell’s boss at the nightclub, is a close second, though.

If you’re looking for sweetness and romance, look elsewhere. This book wrecked me. Heed my warning: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

P.S. My ratings are always partly based on my enjoyment of the story. Elsborg doesn't do light and fluffy, but Drawn In felt particularly oppressive, like a heavy cloak I couldn't shrug off.

This is NOT a bad book, and I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it. This is a good book, well-written and evocative. Barbara Elsborg sure knows her craft.

It's also an angsty book. No, scratch that. It's pain and despair. It was like a black cloud that settled over me the whole time I was reading it. Now, I can do sad and angsty, but there has to be a ray of sunlight somewhere, or at least a big payoff. Here, it was not the relationship angst, which I find delicious. It was one tragedy after the other, up until 95% of the book, and the ending didn't make up for it.

Kell is an undercover cop, and Gethin is a private investigator. In true Barbara Elsborg fashion, fate/luck or whatever you want to call it, plays a big part. Coincidentally, the MCs happen to be at the same place and time, and they hook up. But this is only the beginning, and they end up having in common more than they thought.

There are a lot of side-plots that interconnect at some point. This was done perfectly. There is also Jonnie, Gethin's ex. This is a whole different story that could be a book itself. A very, very sad one. I will not spoil it for you, but let me just say that Jonnie was a very well sketched secondary character, his situation was handled with the respect it deserves, and the conclusion of his story is one of the most amazing scenes I have ever read. 5 stars for this scene alone.

Bottom line, I liked the characters seperately, and the characterization was perfect. But I felt that the MCs didn't get enough page time together for me to feel their connection, their romance took a backseat, and the angst was overwhelming.

I also think that the blurb should include trigger warnings like

Delicious, delicious angst. You will gorge on it, in Drawn In. I love this author's writing. Her stories never fail to engage me, and Drawn In was no different. It is dark, though, and angsty, through and through, so do be prepared. Maybe have a teddy bear handy for cuddles.

Gethin Jones is a fairly new private investigator, generally called in to follow spouses suspected of cheating. He's not really a happy guy and his relationship with an ex, Jonnie, is nothing but complicated and filled with feelings of guilt that really don't belong to him. I felt bad for Jonnie's situation, but at the same time, he was selfish and manipulative and I wanted Gethin to move on. I think Jonnie asked too much of Gethin, not really caring that the whole situation was killing Gethin, piece by piece. At the same time, though, Jonnie needed someone and Gethin was too good of a guy walk away. He didn't want to abandon Jonnie like everyone else had. So he hung on and did the best he could with a bad situation.

Kell DeMornay became a cop to help people and to put bad guys away. Part of what motivated him was his sociopath of a brother who never stopped trying to make Kell pay for being born. So Kell wants to help protect other people who may not be able to protect themselves. For the past several months, Kell has been undercover and stuck in a very bad relationship with an abusive guy and there is little he can do about it until the case is over. Kell was dedicated and even though his job was taking a huge toll on him, he wouldn't walk away. I can't imagine living that kind of a life.

Though they meet somewhere outside their jobs, Gethin and Kell find that the threads of their lives keep intersecting and soon they go from 'strings-free sex' to really depending on each other. They are each other's oasis in Drawn In and without having each other, I don't think either would have made it through.

Barbara Elsborg's characters are always just so well drawn, and there are no exceptions here. Both Gethin and Kell just felt so real to me. Both of them were stuck in situations that were killing them slowly. Guilt, paired with the desire to make the world a better place, drove their actions.

And there are a lot of story threads in Drawn In that, while I didn't see it at first, were all tied together in a very believable way. Be patient, though, because their commonality isn't readily seen, at first. I loved that nothing got left out, in the end. Everything tied up, but never felt trite.

I would definitely recommend Drawn In with caution, because there isn't a lot of light in this story and there are things that might trigger some readers, such as . Our guys do get their happy ending, though.

This story definitely captures your attention from the beginning, and does not let up. There is plenty of angst, but yet some sweet moments too.
Kell is cop working undercover at a gay sex club, trying to take down the owner for human trafficking, drugs and so much more. What Kell has to go through is brutal, and he is struggling to keep his cover.

Gethin is a Private Investigator, who is having trouble with his latest case. He is also trying to cope with a horrendous situation with his ex, which is another heartbreaking situation. When Kell and Gethin meet at a party, they are instantly attracted to each other, but want to keep things very casual since neither of them are in a position to have a relationship. Unfortunately, it seems their cases are intertwined and their very lives are in danger.

You made me smile when I thought I’d forgotten how. You made me see life could be different. I don’t want this to end, yet I don’t see how it can continue, don’t see why you want it to”~Kell

I adored both Kell and Gethin, but it was Gethin I wanted to hug. He is such an honorable man, yet he doesn’t see himself that way. His friends can, Kell can, but not Gethin. Although you don’t learn his entire backstory until near the end, you know it must be heartbreaking.

The only minor complaint is that it didn’t have an epilogue. I know I am spoiled with most books having epilogues, but I wanted to see Kell and Gethin in the future. The story did wrap up nicely and it did have an HEA, but I just wanted more.

What exactly is angst?
Well, let’s be precise here…Angst is; a feeling of dread, anxiety, or anguish. I’m fussy when it comes to angst in my romance stories. I like to take the hard trail and fight for my books but, BUT, I need to know it’s worth it. I like what I call 'balanced angst'. Or I like to be rewarded for all of my heartache. There were times I questioned if this was worth it. It didn’t seem balanced at first. I wasn’t sure I could push through the pain. Yet I did because soon I could feel it, I could feel them and I knew what they had was significant.
I’m so glad I was right to believe in them.

Pay attention to the blurb; it clearly defines the overall tone of the story. You shouldn’t be surprised with the amount of deep, raw emotions we experience because it’s not falsely advertised. This is not easy nor is it lighthearted but I didn’t expect it to be.

Kell and Gethin cross paths time and time again. They don’t recognize their fateful crossroads right away but soon lust takes over and pulls them together, with a crash. Gethin is a private investigator struggling to keep his business going. His friend and office landlord persuades him to help him out with a party he’s coordinating. Gethin plays waiter for Angel but not very well. Then we have Kell who is drowning in his undercover assignment. He has bitten off more than he can chew and has found himself in an abusive relationship. Desperate for a taste of his old (true) life, he attends his best friend’s posh birthday celebration. There is something familiar about the grouchy waiter and he’s eager to find out more. If he’s reasonable, he shouldn’t follow his curiosity. But Kell has never been one to listen to reason.

Both of their lives are beyond complicated and have no room for a lover, let alone anything more. They agree to keep it casual and explore their intense magnetism with a strict no strings policy. Soon life takes them by the balls and they do everything they can to hold on…and to each other. They are in the eye of the storm and it’s only peaceful for a flash, then all hell breaks loose. The aftermath of the destructive storm will change everything and everyone it touches.

What's to like: The incredible writing, the deeply developed characters and the intricate web of a plot. It’s a gritty story begging you to sink your teeth into it. I could have sworn it was over five hundred pages, and not because it dragged but because it was so FULL. Elsborg truly knows how to throw a literary uppercut and power kick at the same time. I ACHED and I WEPT and I LOVED it. There is so much going on and I don’t want to touch on even half of it because I think you should experience the powerful twists firsthand. I am certain you will love and you will hate some of the characters. There is definitely nothing mediocre about any part of this story.

What's to love: The complexity of their love is astounding. They have so much baggage and they are fighting impossible and unfair battles yet despite everything beating them down, they cling to each other. They weather the storm as one, knowing each other is strong and capable but as a unit, they are unsinkable. Or at least they hope so. The sex is filthy hot and rough. They bite, mark and claim each other. They quickly discover that sex is not enough, not even close to enough. They both want it all but will their clusterf*cked lives allow them the chance? Only one way to find out…..

Beware of: Triggers! Abusive relationships including physical and sexual. The controversial argument of Dr. Kevorkian’s philosophy plays a crucial part. And lots and lots of heart racing suspense and action. And the first sex scene is a bit startling but you’ll understand why as the pages fly by.

This book is for: Anyone brave enough to take a few hits to reach a satisfying and complete ending. This happens to be my first book by Elsborg, but if you’re a fan of her work I have no doubt this will blow you away. Don’t fight it, just go with it and allow yourself to be Drawn In, I promise it’s worth it.

Let me just play devil's advocate on behalf of this book for a sec. Drawn In came after reading two phenomenal books back to back, so it had big shoes to fill. Also, I seem to be continuing to struggle with heavy reads under the Cheeto regime. I like Elsborg's writing and she does have a tendency to tackle some weighty issues, had I been in a different mindset this could have been a 4 heart read, but timing is everything. So they say.

This is one weighty read. There are mentions of pedophilia, women being sold into slavery, one of the MCs is regularly beaten and for all intents and purposes raped by his "boss", the other MC's ex-boyfriend is a quadriplegic who wants to be euthanized and the icing on the cake is a sociopathic brother. If that isn't the cake of evil cackling doom I don't know what is. All it was missing was a dusting of Cheeto jizz.

EEEEEEEEPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!! OR A CLOWN!
EEEEEEPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!

I think it would've been more successful had the euthanasia and maybe the sociopathic brother storylines been deleted. I think I understand the purpose of both I just think it could've been accomplished in a less dire and or sinister ways. To put it succinctly, I struggled to get through this and once it was over I went scurrying directly back to my happy, happy, joy, joy place. With my binkie. Perception is everything though, so what's "weighty" or "heavy" for me may not be for another.

I can always count on Elsborg to bring the heat, though and she delivered there. The chemistry between Gethin and Kell is palpable. I did think their transition from fuck buddies to feels was choppy and verged on instalove, but as the story evolved their relationship strengthened and grew before my eyes. They both have to endure quite a bit and begin relying on and trusting one another more and more. I also loved their banter. Sometimes it was silly but it provided a much needed respite from all the heavy.

The mystery storyline was kind of a bust for me. It came together really quickly with very few unforeseen twists or turns and made these law enforcement officers look like a bunch of incompetent amateurs. The reason I like mysteries and thrillers is that feeling of being kept guessing, on the edge of my seat, if you will and that eluded me. Yet, I always feel badly saying these things when the primary objective of this book or any in this genre is romance. I get that the mystery is supposed to just be the window dressing. I just wish it had been a little more complex.

There were some editing issues that had me rereading sentences to piece them together, but overall the narrative flowed well.

I would recommend this to MM romance fans who enjoy heavier reads, but please heed the warnings.

I was scared of the angst in this one. But it's Barbara Elsborg - there's always angst. But it's angst I can handle. It's not eye-roll inducing, drama for the sake of drama, angst.

This was certainly hard to read at times. Pretty much every scene with Marek and Kell made me cringe. And every scene with Gethin and Johnnie was pretty heart-breaking. But amongst all that was BE's trademark banter to help lighten things up a bit.

There was a good mix of romance and suspense I thought.

Some very unlikable characters. Some likable ones too. Plenty of steam and some good chemistry between the MCs, given the premise.

I'm glad I ended up giving this one a go. Barbara Elsborg is definitely an auto-buy author for me.

Destroyed

That's how I feel after reading this book.

It's dark, it's emotional, and it never lets up. An mm romantic suspense thriller that will grab your heart strings from the very beginning and not let up until the very end.

The plot is darkly fascinating. The on page scenes so descriptive that you live them. The reveals come torturously slow and I've never seen such a hard won HEA.

This book will have you gasping when not outright crying.

If you're an American reading this book you'll notice idioms that seem like typos to us. I recognized them for what they were. HOWEVER, there was also an editing issue. The book needs a good proofreader at the very least. So, if you notice a missing star on my review, you should know that I never give five stars to a poorly edited book, even when the writing and the plot deserve the full five.

update 11/22/16 - the author has corrected the typos mentioned. This is a five star plus book from an author who cares that her work be polished and is sensitive to her readers.

Whoops! Forgot to add that I received an ARC copy from the author in return for an honest review!

Oh my stars! All the stars! Another stupendously intense and sexy story from one of my favorite authors. I've read so many Barbara Elsborg MM and I've loved every one. Kell and Gethin were fabulous characters, so well fleshed out and I was completely infatuated with them. Barbara does a marvelous job of balancing the building suspense and danger, the rough and rocky romance and the incredibly hot sex scenes. She gives us a healthy dose of the good stuff without overwhelming the story. She seems to give us a little special sexual surprise in every story! If you've read her books, in With or Without Him you'll remeber the auto-fellatio, and the milking scene in Every Move He Makes. It never becomes pointless filler sex though. She has balancing skills!

Kell became a cop, against the preference of his wealthy father. He's gone undercover to expose the owner of a gay club for selling drugs and sex, among other crimes. The opening scene is heartbreaking, as Kell has been forced to deal with Marek, a vicious thug and associate of the owner. We meet Gethin in the next chapter as he is nearly caught getting computer information for a client who hired him as a PI. These seemingly unrelated incidents mark the beginning of a complex and enthralling plot.

Gethin is living an isolated life, where events in his past are now consuming both his present and future. His PI work is his only outlet, other than his office landlord and friend, flamboyant party-planner Angel. I loved Angel, his partner Harry and their dachshunds! Angel cares about Gethin but Gethin hates to depend on anyone. Gethin and Kell meet outside of their respective professions and share a very hot hookup against a wall and behind a couch... They agree to meet for future stringless sex; the zipless f**k (a term familiar to those who remember Erica Jong and her book "Fear of Flying"). Their lives and careers begin to intersect from there and they find their feelings growing and learn how far they can trust each other

I find that her stories seem to have a touch of darkness and get rather gritty and rough at times. But she also gives us a great deal of humor, as Kell is charmingly sarcastic and his banter with Gethin is priceless, as are the Shakespeare exchanges between Gethin and Angel. There's edge-of-your-seat action and danger, along with heart-stopping situations for our MCs. Then it's topped off with some soul satisfying comeuppance, bittersweet emotions and HEA's or HFN's at a minimum. Highly, highly recommended if you like your romance with a little crime drama and spicy erotica.

***DNF 24%***

I started this one day and it took me WEEKS to reach to this point. Unfortunately, this book and I are terribly incompatible.

I tried, I really did. But when the first 18% is done and you still cannot see how/where/when the two guys are ever gonna meet, the situation can be discouraging at least. When you finally got to see them together… I couldn’t feel the spark.

So now I have no reason to go on.

To be honest, I’m not exactly a Private Investigator book fan exactly. Well, I have no idea which my tastes are in a concrete way (it just clicks or it doesn’t) but I’ve come to terms with the fact suspense/thriller is usually not my cuppa when reading, and here it definitely isn’t.

From what I was able to gather, this story has a very grey atmosphere that soakes everything. For the life of my I cannot fathom how Gethin’s and Kell’s paths are even related apart from that random party. Maybe both their plots are intertwined eventually. Who knows.

So, all in all, it’s not a bad book. Not at all. I’m just not feeling it, I’m getting bored, and it’s raw torture deciding to invest my time in this in between more satisfying readings.

So I’m calling it a day.

“Just don’t break me…”
“I doubt I could break you. But I’d always put you back together.”
,/i>

It’s been a while since we’ve picked up a Barbara Elsborg book and from the very first chapter, we were reminded of why we adore this author’s work as much as we do. Whether it’s M/F or M/M there is a sadness and despair to her stories that’s always alleviated in some ways by the injection of acerbic, sarcastic witty inner monologue or banter. She has a gift of injecting slivers of light into the darkness, sadness and vulnerability of her characters and Drawn In displayed this talent perfectly.

Kell, and Gethin were such tortured and lonely characters, giving the story an overall feeling of melancholy. Our hearts truly ached for them both. Both men carried the scars, pain and liabilities of their past. They came across as such lost souls we could feel their loneliness and imminent connection through the pages.

“You can’t keep me safe, but you can keep me strong.”

Kell is an undercover cop, trying to crack open a case that sees him being treated in the most deplorable manner by the cruel, second in command of a criminal ring. Geez, did this guy have us on the edge of our seat and our hearts in pieces. He deserved some happiness through his bleakness.

Gethin is working as undercover Private Investigator uncovering cheating partners, a far cry from his previous life as a guitarist in a successful band, when he stumbles upon a job that has him questioning his safety yet answering his natural inquisitive nature to delve further into what lies beneath what initially appeared to be a woman wanting to catch her husband being unfaithful. All is definitely not as it seems on the surface. Gethin himself is trapped in an unorthodox relationship with his ex-boyfriend that sees him staying with Johnny due to some form of guilt and misplaced loyalty. Boy did this guy have a big, beautiful heart!

Gethin and Kell meet at a party being catered by Gethin’s friend, and instant and intense sexual attraction is felt between the two men. They scratch an itch, and both not wanting a relationship, agree to meet for sex, their ‘own form of Grindr’ to hook up when the mood strikes. Purely casual sex without any sort of commitment.

However, soon lines become blurred, paths are crossed and lives become threatened and we are taken on a scorching, emotional and suspenseful journey of two men finding tenderness and a fragment of normalcy out of the chaos and unpredictability that is their lives.

“You made me smile when I thought I’d forgotten how.”

We were holding our breaths, our stomach were in knots, our hearts pounding as Barbara Elsborg put them, and our nerves, through their paces. Our hopes and dreams for Kell and Gethin were paramount in our hearts throughout Drawn In. As stated earlier, Barbara expertly mixes dark and sexy with light and emotional and the comedic banter and witty inner monologue of Kell and Gethin in the direst of circumstances provided a reprieve from the torment these characters experienced.

“I need you to help me forget, not remember,” Kell whispered. “Can we just have that? For a few hours?”

We were held captive by Barbara Elsborg’s words, imprisoned by the riveting, thrilling and suspense of the story, whilst finding the emotion, passion and connection between the characters gripping. Oh talk about edge of the seat stuff! Drawn In was most definitely an enthralling, emotional and addictive read.

I loved this book. Loved. It. At the moment I'm looking for contemporary romance with angst and characters with depth and flaws. I want a connection that's intensely emotional (psychological in some way) with wild eroticism; Drawn In gave it to me with two smokin' barrels.
Review to come sometime over the weekend as life allows. In the meantime...

Absolutely nobody writes suspense like Barbara Elsborg. Plus: NON STOP action, steamy romance, and rip out your heartstrings drama. I'm telling you Drawn In had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page!

I really enjoyed the backstories of Kell and Gethin. They've both got sadness, and trauma, and dangerous jobs, but the power dynamic between them is nicely equal. This added so many interesting layers to their relationship!

Watch out for that ending though... it's a heartwrencher. Bravo!

Well this was a nail biter at times- one shit show after another ! I actually enjoyed the intensity between Kell & Gethin and their desperation to enjoy each other. There were many pain in the ass characters that were factors in blocking these two, from a needy quadriplegic, to an insane sadistic criminal to an even more sadistic brother. Seriously how these two guys remained semi sane is an understatement ! If you like high drama, undercover angst I'd say give this a go

This was a tough one!

Undercover cop Kell was trapped in an abusive relationship but he kept going, always in the hope to find incriminating evidence.
Private investigator Gethin was depressed. He didn't like his job and his personal life was dictated by a complicated situation with his ex.

Kell and Gethin met by chance at a party. There was an instant attraction between them and after some hot encounters they agreed to continue to meet for casual sex. A no-strings arrangement, because for both of them there was no way for a real relationship at this point of their lives.
Unfortunately they soon had to learn that their cases were intertwined and they had to endure a lot of life-threatening situations.

There was a lot of abuse, danger and threats, yet the story didn't get too dark thanks to Kell's smartass comments.
The love story of Kell and Gethin was touching. They were both in dark places but they found light and strength in each other.
... Someone who could put him back together, help him look forward to the future, help him live instead of just existing....... Someone who'd teach him how to smile........

For me, the most emotional plotline of this book was the story around Jonnie, Gethin's ex-boyfriend. It's an extremely difficult topic and I'm sure that everything that happened in the last chapter, that scene in the snow, will be on my mind for a long time. I finished this book yesterday but I'm still crying when I think about it.

Best read of 2016

I read Drawn In with a few of my GR reading buddies, and I'm so glad I did. This story takes the reader on one helluva ride. For the majority of this book, I had to keep reminding myself to breathe.
The two main characters, Kell and Gethin, will cross paths twice but don't know it yet. Kell is so deep undercover that his life is in constant danger—the players in his world are abusive and shady, and no one is to be trusted. As Kell tries to get enough Intel to end a slave trade operation, he places himself as a security person who answers to the number two person, Marek, with whom he has an extremely unhealthy relationship. The front for it all is the gay bar where the main players hold court for all their illegal activity. Marek is a monster.
Gethin is a P.I. whose job is filled confirming the fears from suspicious spouses that their lover is cheating, to searching for runaways from frantic parents. Looking for a lost teenage boy, Gethin goes to that gay bar because of a tip from the boy's friend, confident he may be working there.
It's plain to see that both Kell and Gethin don't have too much goodness in their lives—there are no romantic relationships for either of them to speak of, family issues between Kell and his obnoxious brother, Oliver, have taken hate to a whole new level, and Gethin's loyalty to a paralyzed friend is heartwarming and miserable at the same time.
These two need each other more than their next breath, but stuck in their own doubtful minds, there were too many reasons they shouldn't be pursuing the other. After they wind up becoming a part of each other's lives, personally and professionally, Kell and Gethin rock each other's world. These two remind me of Batman and Robin, Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton, and Starsky and Hutch—all in one. Working together or not, they're funny, smokin hot, and become the only ones to be trusted in their world that consists of lies and deception. They're just nice guys who deserve to have their own bit of happiness so badly.
This storyline is original and cleverly written with plenty of twists and turns, leaving nothing sugar-coated, the supporting characters were perfectly placed—key in either supporting or destroying the lives of both main characters, and of course, Kell and Gethin are amazing in every single way. I truly fell in love with them. The one thing I didn't like about this book—when it came to an end. I will definitely read this one again. Five stars aren't enough. This book needs to be read!!!! Phenomenal job by Barbara Elsborg!

Dark, gritty and thoroughly believable [who knows what goes on in these undercover police ops but the protagonists themselves], and yes of course, it has angst [let's face it, not many stories nowadays can be declared an angst-free zone], BUT it's so well-written it's no surprise she's one of my fave authors. I haven't read a bad Barbara Elsborg story yet, and I include her M/F/M and M/F in there too. This story had so much going on. 5 stars all the way from me....

Tremendously hot sex scenes are the norm in Barbara's stories, and she didn't disappoint [thank goodness, hehe]. I loved the interaction between Kell and Gethin, and they didn't seem to have a cat's chance in hell of ever being together cos everything was conspiring against them, but would they give up?? Would they hell... I absolutely adored them as a twosome; in spite of the frightening situations in which they regularly found themselves, they always had time for a laugh, and the heat between them?? Scorching!! Angel and his hubby Henry were great favourites, and they always tried to have Gethin's back.

There were a selection of nasty nutters...or should I say psychopaths to choose from, including Kell's own brother, who also happened to be an MP [and definitely needed putting down. I really think that particular thread needed some sort of final resolution...a much better one than simply being disinherited by their father]. Oh, and the Birthday Party where Kell and Gethin's mutual attraction starts?? Watch and learn how the other half live...it's certainly an eye-opener, but nothing we plebs hadn't imagined about how the 'Hooray Henry and Henriettas' conduct themselves. ;) Brilliant Barbara, thanks.

This was a bit angsty, darker book, I enjoy that in my stories when done well- which this was. This was mutual suspense from both M/C's they both had their share of crazy issues to deal with. Besides the romance side I liked the overall suspense story in this book, it was done very well.

Kell is in a bit of a bad place. He’s undercover and after his last mission didn’t pan out, he needs to really come through with the goods on this one. Unfortunately, that has led him to cross the line in a major way. He is basically the play thing for the second in command, who is never gentle nor caring. He succumbs to it all for the good of the job, biding his time until he has enough important information to take it all down.

Gethin is a PI who crosses paths with Kell, and the two share a pretty big attraction. Both men are hiding big secrets, and both agree to a no-strings attached sexual relationship that they think will work perfectly for each of them. Of course, it doesn’t take long for things to go beyond the it’s-only-sex stage. But, Kell is tied to his job and all that entails, and Gethin has a pretty sticky situation of his own.

Gethin has committed himself to his ex who is now a paraplegic. The two had been musicians in the same band but had broken up after Jonnie cheated on him. Unfortunately, Jonnie has no memory of that part and still believes they are boyfriends. With his parents giving up contact, as well as all of Jonnie’s other friends, Gethin feels he has little choice but to be there for Johnnie. It is the foundation of a heapload of guilt on Gethin’s side, and it plays a pretty important role in the story. This was a very emotional side plot that softened up the rest of the harshness for me.

There were a lot of things that never quite added up for me and some that felt unnecessary and over the top. Namely, Kell’s brother, who apparently tried multiple times over the years (since birth) to kill Kell. There were a few others, but that stood out the most. There are quite a few characters to not like, but also a few to love, like Gethin’s friend Angel and his husband.

This was not a light and fluffy read, as expected and indeed was hoping for, from Ms. Elsborg. She definitely delivered on that front. It was interesting with a few twists and turns and lots of things connecting that had me turning pages quickly. It was hot and heavy at times, and emotional and heartbreaking at others. It was full of angst and pain but there was light at the end of the tunnel. I would have enjoyed seeing a bit more of the guys together, as opposed to their being separated by their side stories, but all in all, this was a satisfying and enjoyable read.

It was a nice read, not my favorite by the amazing Barbara Elsborg, but good written plot with some nerve wrecking moments.

The Jonnie part of the story simply tore my heart out into thousand little pieces.

“Just don’t break me…”
“I doubt I could break you. But I’d always put you back together.”

“I need you to help me forget, not remember,” Kell whispered. “Can we just have that? For a few hours?”

We were held captive by Barbara Elsborg’s words, imprisoned by the riveting, thrilling and suspense of the story, whilst finding the emotion, passion and connection between the characters gripping............ Click here for full review

I guess I might be quite twisted, because I just don't think this book was as dark and depressing as the other reviewers describe. Sure, there was angst, but not to the point of total hopelessness. Dunno, I didn't feel desolate while reading this. I actually enjoyed the book. Barbara Elsborg usually does suspense really well, and this time was no exception. I especially loved Kell's interactions with his gangster lover..the man was abusive, but I thought Kell handled him very well, never losing the optimism and carrying on his undercover mission no matter what. Kell had a wicked sense of humor, so it was no surprise Marek began actually caring for him in his own way.

As to Gethin, again, lots of emotional issues and a huge weight of an ex-boyfriend on his shoulders - but he had more resentment in him than grief...

What had upset me most, though, was Kell's psycho brother... What a nasty human being.

Anyway, for those who want suspense and action with a big side of dark - recommended.

This was ok, although I think it was more along the lines of I didn't really like it most of the time. The case/mystery whatever you want to call it dragged on for far too long. Then you have the side stories with both Kell and Gethin and it pushed it over.

I had to read this for another challenge, so I had to finish, but I probably would've DNF'd this one.

Barbara Elsborg never fails to deliver gritty and angsty stories and “Drawn In” was no different. It was dark and violent and the MCs really have to go through a lot (emotionally and physically) to get their HEA. It’s definitely not for the weak hearted. It’s a perfect cop drama with loads of action and good old detective work. The plot was fast paced and engaging with complicated characters you can’t help but sympathize and love.

Kell DeMornay is an undercover cop who is currently investigating a seedy nightclub owner who is not as clean as he appears on paper. Kell ends up in an abusive relationship with Marek, a low-life who is second in command of the big fish, Kell is trying to fry. He needs to keep quiet and endure if he does not want to blow the operation. In a party, Kell meets the handsome, raven haired waiter, Gethin. There is instant attraction between the two and after some scintillating encounters, they decide to make an arrangement for stringless casual hook-ups. Kell is not in a place to have a lover and not endanger his life whereas Gethin is not ready for chancing his heart again so this arrangement is perfect for both. Circumstances brings Kell and Gethin colliding together in their professional lives and they have to rely on one other to get their job done and come out of it alive.

The plot is very fast paced with a lot of twists and turns and adrenaline fueled moments. There is nothing like a sadistic criminal, bent on possessing Kell and killing Gethin to get your blood pumping. The situations in which Kell and Gethin find themselves were very hairy and dangerous. The plot flow will keep you on your toes. It is like watching those horror movies where you are scared to watch but still can’t help but peek through your pillows. There was no knowing what was going to happen next and the constant danger which the MCs found themselves in were thrilling and terrifying at the same time.

Kell and Gethin’s “no-strings sex” arrangement falls apart after they get to know each other for real. Their lives get entwined pretty badly and both needed each other for comfort and love in midst of a fucked-up/messy situation as theirs.

“I’m not going to back off and wait,” Kell said. “I know what we agreed, our own private version of Grindr but we’ve already gone beyond that. You mean more to me than a casual fuck.”I love you, you fucking idiot.“I want a relationship with you. I want us to go out together and see where this leads.”I want a happily ever after.

The emotional quotient is this book is quite high. Gethin’s situation with his ex and his selfless behavior towards him was sad and complicated. The entire way that part was handled was emotionally draining and beautiful as well. You can’t help but deeply feel his conflicted emotions about his ex and sympathize with him for trying to do his best. Kell, on the other hand had a cunt of a brother who made his entire life a living hell. I wanted to kill that bastard. Apart from that he goes through a lot of abuse in the line of duty and ultimately gets his man. As I said earlier this book is gritty and dark and violent and has a lot of triggers like so please proceed with caution.

The plot is very realistic with no stones left unturned at the end. The conclusion was perfect with a very hard earned HEA for our brave MCs. I would definitely recommend this book. I loved the characterization and the plot development very much. There are very little sweet moments in this story so if you are looking only for an angsty romance then this is not it. If you don’t mind reading gritty and dark romances, then “Drawn In” is the book for you!!!

I thanked Barbara Elsborg for her writing that this story overwhelmed me with feeling despite the so many things which disturb me.

For starter, name "Gethin", forgive me if I dunno that this name is common in UK but what kind of name is that? I kept mistaken it with "getting"!

And then there're angst, a lot of it. From Kell's evil brother, Kell's abusive relationship and most of all Gethin's complicated relationship with Jonnie (damn.. this name annoyed me too). It's like both MC having so much on their plate!

But I do enjoyed the story and the romance and the smuts... XD
I like how Gethin & Kell path entwined though I already guessed it when the boy-missing part appeared.

And the smuts?!
FRICKING HOT!

Kitty's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

A mixture of consensual sex, rough sex, love, hate and deception, Drawn In had it all. Kell and Gethin were interesting, confusing and stuck in the middle of a mess. When all is said and done, it will be them finally being truthful with everything to overcome all the barriers that stand between them. There were some characters that were truly mean and hateful but added the intrigue to the story. Then there were characters that were hysterical and added some light to the darkness in the story.

Barbara Elsborg did a nice job of putting all of the puzzle pieces together. At times I was a little confused and did have to go back and reread parts so that they made sense to me. This did slow the book down a little for me. But, I think I would put that on the “English” throughout the story. Yes, there is a difference between American English and England English and there were parts that stumped me. It did not take away from the story, but it took me a little bit of time to get used to.

A lot happened throughout the book that involved all of the characters. There were numerous secrets that needed to be uncovered and understood. Both Kell and Gethin had them. As we all know, secrets can be the downfall of any relationship. But, these secrets could get them killed. As the storyline came together and secrets slowly started being revealed, everything started making sense and they were both able to finally face their feelings for each other without the guilt of keeping something from someone they love.

Honestly, Drawn In was a beautiful love story about two men trying to find their way in life. And, during their journey, they found each other. Ms. Elsborg allowed us to feel their hurt, their guilt and their love. She let us see different sides of both of them. She did a wonderful job of bringing them both to life and it was a pleasure getting to know them so well.

I truly enjoyed Drawn In once I overcame the little language barrier. It was funny at times; it was scary at times. You really weren’t sure which way the characters would go until they got there. I commend her for Gethins storyline and I applaud her for Kells. But, most of all, I love how she ended the story and the HEA that she gave us.

Just like all of Barbara’s books Drawn In had my emotions going through the wringer. WOW. This is a book that is filled with so much feeling it weighs heavy on your chest at times.

You know Kell is an undercover police officer from the blurb so I’m not giving anything away what the blurb doesn’t tell you is that Kell is the type of character that you read and want to rescue, hide in your pocket, and shoot anyone that even looks at him funny. He has an awful brother…. No really I think he’s the worst brother I’ve ever read. He is in undercover Hell with a mad man who abuses him in all ways and can do nothing about it.

Gethin is a PI hired to find a runaway 17 year old boy. He’s a loner, sort of, he has friends in Angel and Henry but his life is beyond complicated. He’s in a bad job, with horrible situations, guilt eats at him and when he meets Kell he has no idea their paths are not only going to cross but they will entwine.

I want to get feel-y right now. I don’t want to give away plot and summarize this book. Though it’s not a complicated book; Kell and Gethin are complex characters. Literally only these two could ever understand each other and not only give each other what they need, but lift each other because they know what darkness lurks in their memories.

There is a good level of suspense to this story. Not the action kind where there’s drive byes and car chases. But at any moment one of these guys are going to be caught and with how Barbara writes you also know if they are caught, it’s not going to be a slap on the face. Barbara can write deep into your soul, wrap around your heart and squeeze until you’re gasping for air.

Drawn In is a dark but hopeful story. A book that you won’t be able to put down. You will seek justice and you will get it. You will be forced to put yourself in Gethin’s shoes on a tough decision. You will ache for Kell in ways that will make you tremble.

This book is marvelous. Like all Barbara’s works she has left me breathless and with a good book hangover.

I don't know how to rate this one... I truly enjoyed it. It was heavy and dark and gritty and I sobbed my fool head off at one point. All those things are win for me but...

There were two dark, heavy plot elements that would ordinarily work for me. Separately. In two different books. I thoroughly enjoy action and suspense and mystery. That plot element was harsh and kept my gut churning in a horrible, wonderful way. I also love emotional drama, angst and pain. That plot element, Gethin's relationship with his ex, evoked a delicious emotional wreckage, that tore my heart out and left me wailing on the floor. These two plot elements were pretty independent of one another and I felt they would have had more impact in two separate books. It felt overdone to pack so much unrelated drama and angst into one book.

I would give each of these separate elements 4 stars. As a whole though, I'm left with an awkward, confused feeling, like somehow it didn't all work for me.

If you're into dark, angst ridden emotional wreckage that keeps you on the edge of your seat dying from suspense, I'd say this book is worth a read. There's a good chance you won't mind the blend of dramatic elements and plot points.
