Jumping volume two continues the story of insecure Ran and her newly found love for riding and horses (or particularly a horse, Tsugaru). But in order to get into the university's riding club, and ride Tsugaru, she needs to pass the university entrance exam. And that’s no small fence to jump (pun absolutely intended).

I liked this volume even more than the first! It felt more balanced, and story and character progression are paced well. There is a fair number of comedic moments but not too much, just enough of spice the everyday drama and they don't ruin the important serious moments.

Ran tries to study as hard as she can but the fear of failure and feeling of inadequacy hinder her. But she has a goal which the university is a gateway to: the horse riding club. And supportive friends! Sayuri especially is determined to help Ran achieve her goals, and although she’s loud and brash, she’s actually insightful: she figures Ran’s trouble with handwriting is a part of her struggle with learning and provides a solution: a tablet. She also seems pushy with Ran and the exams but she has reasons for this and it's all because she wants Ran to succeed. Positive and drama-free friendships YAY!

Second half of the volume deals more with Ran getting to know the life at the stables better and finding riding even more enjoyable than she first thought. I obviously liked all the bits with the horses, I hope they spend more time at the stables in the next volume! I liked the first half too but in a horse-themed manga I wanna see the horses!

Ran still gets flushed and nervous around people but it's nice how she’s already grown tremendously. I just sympathize Ran so much. The party scene where she herself realizes how she's gained some confidence and friends and is having fun just warms my heart. She also reveals she’s not very good with people because their words and actions often contradict, and you understand her hardships. But horses, and other animals, are sincere, so she finds them soothing. It’s these little moments (Sayuri and the tablet being other example) that makes this manga a heartwarming read.

The art isn’t exceptional but definitely not terrible, it looks fine. But gotta say I’m not a fan of the way the mangaka draws Hinagata’s eyes! The covers look kinda boring too. Print quality is good.

I’m delighted this series got a release here, it’s a little unknown gem. Recommended!
