4.5 ☆  Fun read

I really enjoyed reading The women who met her match. It was fun, lots of laugh out loud moments, a story of starting over and learning to love again, A story about finding out their place in the crazy new world of dating!

The opening scenes were by far my favourite within the book.
They show Lorrie as a teenager on her first adventure to France in the exchange programe to learn all about the culture etc..
It's here Lorrie is about to make friends and fall in love for the first time.

A real coming of age start to the book, watching Lorrie experiment with Make up and learning to Love herself, was beautifully warmimg.

It was beautiful, Antoine was the older brother where she was staying.
They became inseparable, and shared stolen kisses and tender moments.

However it wasn't too last as soon as Lottie came home Antoine fell in love with he's Sisters best friend... leaving her heartbroken.

Fast forward a good 30 years... Lottie now has two children and is very much grown up and about to embark in the murky waters of modern day online dating!

Lorrie is a great Mum of two and recently lost her husband in a tragic car accident.
However her children have decided their Mum needs to get out there and enjoy life and to meet new people.

So they set her up on a dating site.
With some very funny disastrous dates.
I loved the bits where she was dating. I just wish there was more.

Unfortunately for Lorrie her new disastrous dates are not really doing anything for her confidence. So she decides it may just be time to give up!

That is until Antoine walks back into her life after all these years!
Can they 're kindle their love for one and other?... is there still a spark there?.... why has he waltzed back into her life again after all these years??
......if you want the answers I highly recommend reading the book you won't be disappointed.

Overall a fab read, quirky fun characters, lots of laugh out loud moments, sometimes a lil cringe but I loved It!
A strong female lead, who I admired. Her determination to not give up on finding Love.

Highly recommend to everyone especially readers who love Romcoms, Chick Lit, Women's Literature.

I received this book from the Publisher in exchange for a honest and fair review via Netgalley.

Thank you to Netgalley, Fiona Gibson and publishers for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.

When lorries long term partner and father of her two children dies because of a car accident. Lorrie is left to bring up the children and pay the bills by herself. A life long friend of lorries moves into the house to help her with everything. But doesn't Lorrie need stu more then she realises?

Lorries children decide that is time for their mother to meet someone new and sign her up to online dating with some hilarious situations. But when another date goes disastrously wrong Lorrie is ready to hang up the dating towel for good.

That is until she is contacted by her first love Antoine who broke her heart when she was just 16. Antonia is in England for just a few days. Could this be exactly what Lorrie needs?

I absolutely loved this book. From the very first page to the very last. It was absolutely wondeful, such fabulous characters, many laugh out loud moments and an ending that really is the happiest of ever afters. Absolutely delectable.

I really loved this book and if you like romance/chicklit/comedy books then this one really is for you. A must read for all.

You can find my review on Goodreads.com/Karenwhittard and www.amazon.co.uk under Karen whittard from publication date.

Lorrie is a wonderful character. She has two grown up children and is trying the dating scene again which doesn't seem to be going terribly well. Being in my forties also, there was a lot that I could relate to in Lorrie's life. Apart from the dating I should add. Having read Lorrie's dating disaster's, I don't think I would be in any hurry to join it if I ever found myself single again.

There are lots of fabulous characters throughout the story. I really liked Lorrie's lodger for one. I mean who wouldn't love a lodger that can cook and bake? I loved how comfortable the pair are together and they reminded me very much of a couple that have been married for years.

This isn't just a romance novel. Yes there is love in it but it's also about being grown up and having to make decisions. Much harder for Lorrie, when her children arn't that interested in what's going on in her life and she has a mother who is wrapped up in her own world. I really enjoyed reading of her work life and what it's like working behind a make up counter. Certainly makes for some interesting reading.

The Woman Who Met Her Match is a light hearted and feel good read that I struggled to put down. I really enjoyed my first introduction to this authors work and look forward to reading more by her. A highly entertaining and fun read.

19th November 2018 -- this book is currently on sale for 99 cents on Amazon (Aus) and I assume reduced on other sites also.

Lorrie might be the woman who met her match, but I’m the woman who has met her perfect chicklit novel.

Of late, the quality of chicklit books I’ve read has been rather low, but The Woman Who Met Her Match has restored my faith.

Despite the blurb, the storyline does not revolve around Lorrie travelling to France (most of the book is set in London, but don't fret, we do get a few pretty scenes with the French setting) and starting up a relationship with her first love, Antoine. There’s a little more to it than that.

There’s quite a bit about ageism. The plot surrounding Lorrie’s new employers especially highlights that we have a long way to go towards changing people’s attitudes about when a woman has reached her use-by date. (At 46, Lorrie is mature without being over the hill, in my opinion, but it might be something to do with the fact I'm also 46...)

Fat shaming is also a huge issue tackled in the book. I’d like to say the number of times this happens to Lorrie was an artistic exaggeration, but I know it was probably spot on. (It doesn’t help of course that, like everyone else in her/my generation, Lorrie suffers from low self esteem.)

Gibson also adds the themes of handling grief, the futility of revenge, and forgiveness with a deft touch.

In the romance department, there’s a plethora of men parading through Lorrie’s life. There’s the aforementioned Antoine, a couple of likely (and not likely) candidates she meets via an online dating site, a cutie from the dog park, and you might even count Lorrie’s old friend and boarder, Stu.

I liked that none of her potential suitors were tycoons ready to sweep her off her feet and into their sports cars/yachts/private islands. Antione was as close as we got to a millionaire, but even he was not over the top.

Choosing a hero for me to cheer on wasn’t a difficulty. Lorrie's end game guy was my choice, so at last the HEA had me punching the air in happiness.

I enjoyed the way Gibson wrote the romantic scenes. I thought there was just the right balance between sexy and sweet.

Well, actually, I enjoyed everything about this book. I will definitely be checking out Gibson’s other novels. Highly recommend for those looking for a satisfying chicklit read.

I was really looking forward to reading this new book and it didn't disappoint me at all. Lorrie had two children and she lost her partner and her children decide she should try on line dating but after disasters she decides to give it up. She hears from her first love on line and they meet up but can they make a go of it or has time changed and both moved on. Can Lorrie find the right person and is he right under her nose all along. A very warm and funny storm and so poignant a must read.

I have read some rather hard hitting crime and psychological thrillers recently so I needed a little “palate cleanser” and this was just the perfect book to slip into and let its humour wash all the crime horror away. I do love Fiona Gibson and her laugh out loud observations about love, life and family.

The opening chapters of this book brought back so many memories for me!! I also went on a French exchange visit back in the Eighties to visit my French penpal Anne-Yvonne although thankfully I went via train/boat/coach with a large party of sixth formers and not off on my own! My jaw dropped when I saw how Lorries mum just packed her off to make her own way to France with a few instructions on how to manage each part of her journey! Oh how times have changed!

Fast forward 30 years and the advance of social media now means that it doesn’t matter where in the world you live, you are only one click away from reconnecting with your past. And when Lorrie gets a message from the French boy who broke her heart  on that fateful trip, it sets off a chain reaction. But can love work second time around even if you don’t live in the same country? It takes a lot of courage but Lorrie to about to find out!

I bonded with the lovely Lorrie immediately! Her work ethic made me want to cheer out loud for her honesty and helpfulness, she was a true inspiration for her fellow colleagues and I just loved how people gravitated towards her. Her relationship with her children and her lodger backed up these qualities and I wanted more than anything for Lorrie to find true love. But love moves in mysterious ways and a sexy Frenchman coming back into her life was the least I could have hoped for the woman who deserved every happiness going!

I love Fiona Gibson’s writing style. She really gets into the heads of her characters, making you care about them all even Lorries mother!!! And as I romped through this feel good comedy I was hoping and praying for the happy ever after that Lorrie deserved. I find it heartwarming how many books there are now showing that older women are still kicking ass in the workplace and in their love lives. In this age of “swiping left or right” and horror stories of online dating this book was pitched just right, showing the funny side of it but also having a cautious sting in the tale. But I’m a big believer in fate and that sometimes love is found in the most unexpected places and those are the relationships that we need to cherish. It’s never too late for new beginnings!!

I loved this story combining a huge amount of humour, family relationships, best friends and first love. Lorrie's children have signed her up on an internet dating site and she 'endures' some very amusing dates which lead her to think that it's time to call time on dating in her forties.

Her first love gets in touch with her on facebook and after hearing about a wonderful summer that she spent in France on an exchange trip, we look forward to meeting Antoine and seeing whether he is the missing piece of the jigsaw.

She has an amazing best friend who is currently lodging with them , who is always there to pick up the pieces . He has set up an amazing sounding business called Parsley Force - which supplies people who discover that they are missing a vital ingredient for their evening meal, or want some rare hard to find cheese or maybe need something for evening meal after having had a drink. What a wonderful idea.

She works for a lovely company selling cosmetics and we see her caring, nurturing side as she helps her customers feel special and pampered. I loved the scenes where she visited the ladies who set up the company.

It was a really engaging read- making you aware of the perils of internet dating in your 40's (or older!). I cringed along with her as she met some of the men. I was rooting for one in particular.

I always enjoy a Fiona Gibson book and I must buy a few more of her earlier books to enjoy.

As a fan of Fiona Gibson I was looking forward to reading this. The minute I seen the cover I knew this would be a great book.

The story inside was not as I was expecting, I thought it would be more romance etc and go down the one route of the main character falling in love with an old flame.

This was good however as I didnt expect many parts of the story and I felt I knew how it was going to go but it went a different way.

I loved the main character Lorrie. A middle aged woman with two kids the love of her life has sadly died, which instantly makes you feel for the poor woman. We learn shes actually really strong hard working, she cares about everyone, she sticks up for herself, doesnt take any nonsense and she just wants to be happy and in love.

Id love to hear more from Lorrie in the future as she is an amazing character.

This was my favourite Fiona Gibson book. Lorrie has two teenagers - who sign her up to an online dating agency and what becomes of them is so funny, I’d of loved to hear about more dates. And less about Anton the guy who broke Lorries heart when she was a teenager.

She has a best friend Stu who is also her lodger and I loved their friendship and their closeness. Stu has a job with Parsley force (Love the name) it was such a funny and interesting job and it made me laugh as the thought of such a thing in real life was comical. He has people phone him up when they require something specific like a sauce from that posh place in the west end and he on route gets it for them imagine if there was such a thing? I think it’d be very popular. The things people would ask him to get were so funny.

The way Lorrie was in her job as a manager of a cosmetic department had me shouting at the book in happiness and then annoyance for the way she was treated.

I gobbled this book up and was left wanting more . At the beginning I thought Lorrie came across as someone who couldn’t stand up for herself, but as the book continued I was shouting out loud as she gave as good as she got to people around her. I really disliked Lorries mum and every time she was in a scene I wanted to throw my kindle across the room!

I can’t wait to read more from Fiona.

Thanks goes to net galley and the publishers for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Pretty good book - I enjoyed reading "The Woman who met her match" but at some part, I found the story a bit too slow, I found myself a bit bored from time to time while reading this book and I hesitated to give it 3 stars instead of 4 but the last chapters are so great that I finally decided to give this book 4 stars. In the end I enjoyed this book and I will read with pleasure the next book from Fiona Gibson!

I'll admit, I was UBER excited about Fiona's new book as soon as I saw it! Have you SEEN that font?! Vintage swirls meet bold and inspirational, that's my take on the font anywhoo!
SO, the book!! Lorrie, a single mum to two teenagers that are adamant to get her love life rocketing from 0-100, with a little help from a certain online dating site. Little did she know what colourful men she would meet on the dates! Cringe! Being a single lady in her forties didn't seem to worry Lorrie TOO much, yet when her past decided to reappear once again, her personal life decided to use a question mark for a hat.
Can you imagine that, having a question mark for a hat? Wouldn't really keep your head dry if it rained though, eh?
Just like Fiona Gibson's previous novels, TWWMHM (The Woman Who Met Her Match) was full of one liners, sarcastic humour and enough cringey moments to keep you full until dinner time (aka A LOT). Honestly! Some of the things Lorrie's dates came out with caused my hand to fly up to my face so quickly due to embarrassment, I ended up slapping my own face! Classy TWG, classy.
I thought that the French addition to the storyline was a genius idea as I was able to see a different side to Lorrie. She seemed to have a larger than life personality and I wanted her to show it off!
What really hit home with Fiona's novel was the underlying inspirational touch throughout the entire storyline. Instead of the frequent use of candyfloss inspirational messages, Fiona incorporated fictional kicks up the tooshes into her relatable, bold storyline. There didn't seem to be any unattainable hidden messages about situations that could happen once in a blue moon; instead there were positivity outcomes to real life circumstances. What more could you want? For me, the real life edge gave the entire storyline its own special platform and made it stand out from the rest.
Whilst I enjoyed the overall storyline, there were a couple of moments where the storyline slowed down and I ended up wondering where it was heading. Luckily, it did get its little nudge and the storyline picked back up again but I did hope that Lorrie could have filled that gap with her big personality.
There were A LOT of things in this book that made me laugh out loud and think to myself , many things which could be seen as spoilers so I'll keep it to myself. BUT, those thought-provoking moments in the storyline really did open my mind and helped me to see certain things in a different light.
TWWMHM is a bubbly, colourful, laugh out loud read which will keep you on your toes, and have you reaching for a slice of cake to support Lorrie. When the Spice Girls used the term 'girl power' back in the nineties, I ignored it, yet Fiona Gibson has just made 'girl power' popular again thanks to THIS novel.
Yet another delightful and insightful novel from the very talented, Fiona Gibson. Definitely NOT to be missed!
Thank you Avon Books!

Lorrie was a character I immediately liked. She is a 40-something single mother, with two great kids, working hard in a job she loves at a cosmetics counter in a department store and has just decided that romance is not for her after a few bad (though funny!) experiences with internet dating. She doesn't have much confidence in her appearance, not helped by her svelte 70 year old mother continually putting her down and one of her dates saying she looked like a woman 'who likes her cakes'! But when she is contacted by Antoine, her first love and the boy who broke her heart when she was a teenager on a French exchange, she is very tempted to find out if there is any spark still there.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Lorrie as she wonders if she will ever find love again. She came across as a very real person coping, as many women do, with combining a home life with her work. It was really entertaining reading about her horror dates from the internet dating site, as she wonders if there are any normal men out there any more - and whether it's worth the bother of looking! I was outraged on her behalf when changes at work threatened both her job and her happiness. I think lots of women will identify with Lorrie as she has the opportunity to meet up again with 'the one that got away' and will be eagerly following her reunion with Antoine, now a gorgeous businessman, to see if it will work out for them.

Fiona Gibson has written about her characters and events in a way that made them totally believable. I particularly liked Lorrie's friend and lodger Stu, and thought his business idea was brilliant. He has a company called Parsley Force which delivers forgotten essential cooking ingredients to people who I think must have more money than sense. Ms Gibson, I hope you have trademarked that name! The elderly French sisters who own the cosmetics company Lorrie works for only made a brief appearance in the book but were such wonderful characters, full of life and ideas despite their age.

The Woman Who Met Her Match is a very enjoyable book, full of warm humour and characters you can relate to. It is the first of Fiona Gibson's books I have read but I know I can now add her to my list of authors to turn to for funny and feel-good reads. I've no idea if any kind of sequel is planned but I would love to read more about Lorrie and her family.

I love Fiona Gibson books because they take me away from the stresses and worries of daily life. It has been good weather here and this is a perfect beach or garden read. I knew what the ending ofthe book would be but that did not matter as the story was still intriguing.

The part where she returns to meet her French lover from her teenage years is not the main theme of the book whcih I thought it would be. It was a story of normal life from a woman who had lost her husband and held on to the guilt. A story of dealing with a mother who cannot keep quiet and regularly upsets you and a story of teenage children trying to look after and protect their mother while trying to carry on with their own lives.

The theme of the beauty counter where she works is another section of the story especially when she is told she is too old for the new company. We all know that this is not acceptable and will her to take it forward and fight it.

I enjoyed this story and read it in a few sittings. She tells a good tale that is simple but uplifting. Save it for your holidays or under the parasol in the sun with a G & T

What a great book "The Woman Who Met Her Match" was! After the last two books by Fiona Gibson that were enjoyable but not as much as I'd loved them to be, the author is back with a great story like "Take Mum Out" or "Mum on the Run" and it makes me incredibly happy because I was already worried what's happening and when am I going to get the brilliant Fiona Gibson again? No worries guys, here she is, with "The Woman Who Met Her Match"!

I felt immediately at home with this story. It was so warm and welcoming, full of dry humour - just what I like best - the things happening in the story were so down - to - earth and I am sure so many of us can relate to Lorrie. I liked her from the very beginning, as a young girl and then as a mature woman with two teenagers - great kids, BTW! She works hard as a manager at a cosmetic counter in a department store and she loves her job - her passion was palpable through the pages, she was the right person on the right place, guys. She had a big heart, was full of understanding, loved her family and altogether, was happy with her life and those were her children that signed her up on the dating website. My only regret is that there were only few of the dates - you know how much I love reading about disastrous dates and I would SO love to read more about Lorrie meeting those guys because those few that we got were hilarious!

Fiona Gibson has written her characters in the best possible way, they were more than realistic, they just felt like real people with real problems, because - of course! - there were some troubles heading Lorrie's way, just like Antoine, her teenage crush getting in touch out of the blue, or a big company buying the beauty brand Lorrie was working for and going all young on her - and the author has just brought all the things so easily and effortlessly to life. There were many subplots in this story, but they were all done in a perfect way, and no matter what I was reading about, if it was Lorrie's job or her mother's upcoming wedding (oh my word. Lorrie's mum was frustrating. Frustrating. I've no idea how she could bear up with her), I did enjoy them all, and because of this diversity this book was even more brilliant. Lorrie had a lot on her plate but all she did and said just rang true and I just couldn't help but kept everything crossed for her and her family.

I am only not sure who Lorrie's match was but oh well, I can live with this. I'm guessing it must be Stu and let's stop for a moment here. Stu is Lorrie's best friend and a lodger who's running one of the best business you can imagine, namely his company Parsley Force delivers things for people who have forgotten to buy them! Or are too lazy to go out and buy them, whatever, but the idea is brilliant, just imagine - it's snowing or raining, and you fancy a bag of crisps, you call and they bring them to you! Clever, no? However, I don't know, I don't want to spoil the reading for you so I'm not going to elaborate about this, but the end to this story and to Lorrie and Stu's thread was so sudden and well, yes, I did expect it, it was just my gut feeling telling me that it's going to end this way as there was really nothing indicating that there could be more between those characters. Especially Lorrie, she has treated Stu as best friend and those sudden confessions of love at the end made me roll my eyes to be honest. And I also am not sure what was it about Lorrie's son and what's it all for? A nice touch, yes, but only few lines and nothing more, so why?

"The Woman who Met Her Match" is a lovely read touching about many issues, such like grief, marriage, friendship, bringing your children up alone, family bonds and dynamics, showing that there is always time for love and that it can come in a very unexpected way. A story about second chances, illusions, about memories, and this all hidden between gorgeous cover - don't you think it's beautiful? It was a very easy and very enjoyable read and I am really glad to have the good Fiona Gibson back. She writes about the truth with honesty, she creates down - to - earth and normal situations but she gives "normal" a face - lifting and altogether, I can only highly recommend this lovely, comfortable read.
