Scott Snyder is the Eisner and Harvey Award winning writer on DC Comics Batman, Swamp Thing, and his original series for Vertigo, American Vampire. He is also the author of the short story collection, Voodoo Heart, published by the Dial Press in 2006. The paperback version was published in the summer of 2007.
This made me so happy. The first time the bat signal going up and all the future robins and Gotham vigilantes are looking at it.This is basically a different version of batman year one.In the end this was awesome enjoyed it alot!
This could have easily been added to the first zero year volume but for some reason they didn't and we get to read it after zero year whatever. its a nice entry to read zero year if you ask me, even though it might appear to have some inconsistencies specially the fact that bruce wayne is supposed to hate gordon at first in zero year. anyway i read so much batman today and i am thinking of reading even more. its a happy day for me when i read so much and am enjoying myself <3 the follow up story is a nice story made me know i don't know nothing of the bat family they were all in the story and i had to pull up a page detailing the current bat family to know which of them is who. but its a great origin story for all 4 kids.
This was a great start to the Batman New 52 line! I really liked when Gordon flashed the Bat-signal for the first time and all three future Robins (Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, and Tim Drake) saw it at the same time as young kids and were completely awe-struck. This was a fantastic component to this book!
A bit brutal, which does not surprise me based on some related things I've read, but I do like the way it brings in so many disparate characters. Establishes a solid base for rebooting.
It is kind of stupid that Jason would say his name.
3.5 - The Batman origin is standard stuff (and Bruce watching an entire bank of people die without batting an eye rings a bit false), but the James Tynion origin of the Bat Signal that follows is a marvelous bit of storytelling - zooming in on three Robins (and one Batgirl) to learn where they were the first time the signal kicked on.
I read this before I started reading Zero Year which started on issue #21. Surprisingly enough, this was the set-up to that particular arc where Bruce Wayne has yet to discover the symbol for his vigilante crusade, and the Red Hood gang has been running amok in Gotham City for quite some time. I think this should be read as a supplemental issue right after you finish Death of the Family arc (issues #13-17).
However, what caught my attention was the short story at the end, co-written by no other than James Tynion IV (whom I have been familiar with here in Synder's run, and Detective Comics issue #19). I have mentioned before that I have enjoyed his pieces so far (Ghost Lights, People in the Dark, etc.) and this one entitled Tomorrow is yet another delightful flash fiction. It's sort of a meta commentary on the Batman mythos where Jim Gordon is standing on the rooftop with the bat signal on, and his daughter Barbara was asking him why night after night he religiously turns that on.
Meanwhile, we see Tim Drake (soon-to-be second Robin and now Red Robin of Teen Titans) exposing his principal's corruption using his savvy computer skills; Jason Todd (soon-to-be third Robin and now Red Hood) robbing a store with a friend who killed someone and so he had to reprimand him; and Dick Grayson (soon-to-be first Robin and now Nightwing) promoting his family circus act, The Flying Graysons. While they're doing their own respective things, the bat signal lights up in the sky and they all look up from where they are (all equally mesmerized), not knowing yet that one day they will each cross paths with Batman and with each other.
Back at the rooftop, Jim Gordon explains to his daughter that, "anyone who actually stands for what's right in this wicked town...they need all the belief they can get" which is another reason why he keeps that light on every night, not just as a way to communicate with Batman but more of an indication to Gothamites that their secret fantasy for a better tomorrow isn't just that. It's alive and thriving.
Jim walks out and ask his daughter to come down with him but Barbara chose to linger for a while, looking at the symbol of hope across the dark sky--also not knowing then that one day she will become Batgirl herself and fight for a city her father desperately believes in.
It was a sublime and very touching short piece. I just like any story that focuses on the dynamics of the members of the Bat-family and what being a crime fighter personally means to them.
I guess I will refrain from mentioning the glaring absence of characters like Cassandra Cain and Helena Bertinelli and focus on what I was given. Snyder's take of Bruce's beginnings as Batman had potential, but I felt like it felt a little flat by the end of it, but the art was really good as usual, so I guess there's that. I found the back-up story of the Robins and the one Batgirl DC allows to exist significantly more enjoyable, though I can't say I'm a fan of the way Tim continues to be portrayed in the reboot. Good thing I never really thought of myself as a Tim Drake fan.
I heart Batman. I heart Scott Snyder. I've cried, gasped and laughed my way through a lot of the Batman mythology. However, I am not the kid that grew up loving comic books and knowing every little thing about Batman. This origin story helped me fill in some pieces of the puzzle I hadn't figured out yet. For that alone, it gets 4 stars.
It's good, just not what I'm looking for. Something just doesn't strike me quite right about the image of this Bruce Wayne. He looks incredibly young, which is cool, especially on a #0. But it carries through.
Im not into dc superheroes to be honest but this new collection of issues are pretty good, Im kinda in love with the illustrations. Im really excited to read this issues and also all the villians issues!!! Im not into dc superheroes but it's villians? ohmygod I love them
Un buen inicio, explicando alguna que otra cosa y preparandome para el #1, espero que los personajes que no sé cuales son, los expliquen más adelante. Para ser el primer cómic que leo, es algo nuevo y lioso pero me acostumbraré.
