A Scottish rogue...

Gerard Highgate, Marquess of Rockport and the ton’s most aloof rake, knows better than to wed an Englishwoman, especially one as prickly as Lady Cordelia. But when his mother dies and he finds himself saddled with her debts, he needs a wife and he needs one fast.

An exacting Englishwoman…

Lady Cordelia knows that hastiness in husband hunting leads to mistakes. But when she visits an aristocrat to warn that his life might be in danger, he misinterprets her suggestion to flee to Scotland.

An unexpected elopement…

Most elopements are born of love, not misunderstanding. Cordelia and Gerard have already broken that rule, but perhaps they can still make their marriage one of love.

I want it known that for a book that none of my friends have read, I really enjoyed it.
I just thought they changed from enemies to lovers in too short a span though it did take half the book.
What I really liked was that there were no over the top misunderstandings. Everything was cleared up before it could become an issue, they were both very honest with each other, no secrets.

The best part of this story is the Narrator Angela Dawe. This is the story of a loan shark Duke of Belmont, his snobbish daughter Lady Cordelia Haywood and Gerald Highgate Marquess of Rocfort. Gerald can't paid off the obsorbent loans his mother has taken out with the Duke of Belmont. Cordelia over hears her father the Duke Belmont plotting with his Thug to cut Geralds fingers off or kill him.

Lady Cordelia over hears her father her father plotting to kill Gerald if he doesn't repay his mother high interest obsurd loan. Cordelia races off to warn Gerald. They take off to Greta Green to Wed and avoid the Thug.

The only good thing about this story was Angela Dawe's Narration!!

This was a pretty good story. I liked that Cordelia and Gerard kinda hated each other in the beginning and slowly fell in love. No insta-love here.

I didn’t like that Gerard was always running and hiding from Huxley Oggelton like he was a coward. He never stood up to him all the times he tried to kill Gerard. Never saw such a cowardly hero.

And Cordelia’s father was really a piece of work. He should have been killed, if you ask me.

Sex without much description and no swearing.

As to the narration: Again, where I really got the book because of the narrator. Absolutely love Angela Dawe. She does such great voices.

*I got this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.*

In the beginning I wasn’t sure if this was my first Bianca Blythe novel but when I looked her up on Goodreads, I realized that it wasn’t. This novel “A Rogue to Avoid” is the 2nd book in the “Matchmaking for Wallflowers” series and I read both books (#0,5 and #01) too.

Anyway, this novel starts very well with a correspondence between the Gerard Highgate, Marquess of Rockport and the “Matchmaking of Wallflowers” (paper) because he wants to be taken off the list of eligible bachelors. He doesn’t want to get married, not yet at least.

The female lead is Lady Cordelia who already was engaged three times and still isn’t married nor 21. She’s the perfect, absolute appropriate young lady, with the lovely nickname “The Ice Queen”. This season she spends most of her time during those famous balls sitting next to the wallflowers, looking at the men who glance at her before they talk to others and stop looking.

Because of some money Rockport doesn’t have he tries to hide at a private ball, wearing absolutely inappropriate cloths and muddy Hessians. He tries to hide form Oggleton, who wants one of his fingers because he doesn’t have the money his mother owes. And Oggleton isn’t one of those nice and forthcoming guys, he even murders if people do not pay their depts. So he hide in a better way he asks Lady Cordelia to dance with him …
*
The novel starts slowly and it’s a nice read with all the dialogues. My favorite part is when Cordelia climbs down the tree in front of her window, to spy on her father and Oggleton, rides astride to “save” Gerard.
Up from the point where they are in Gretna Green or try to make people believe that they are already a married couple the story telling gets kind of boring. It didn’t slow down but it got kind of strange. First, she doesn’t want to marry him than suddenly she tells him that she is in love with him – hell, that just happened – and she wants to lose her virginity to him. Second there is more than one blacksmith in Gretna Green, so why not get married somewhere else but flee to a shop? Third, when her parents are so horrible, why does she even speak to her father or/and her mother?
And there was the story around Rockport’s mother. Okay, she was married twice. Her first husband kills himself because of her affairs, that’s why Rockport doesn’t have a good relationship to her. But then she marries the man who she had the affair with, they get at least two boys and he loves them so much, that he even hides their mother’s financial problems from them. Why? If it was his mother’s fault that his father killed himself, why does he try to hide her negative habits from his brothers?
It’s a nice novel but well … only 3 stars!

I received an ARC from the author in return for an honest review.
Lady Cordelia, once the perfect debutant, is now one of the wallflowers in the ball. After three broken engagements, she is not very keen on attracting any scandal upon her.
Lord Rockport is a Scottish rogue who doesn’t like balls and rarely attends them unless he is chased to one by a brute trying to get some money from a debt. In order to lie low, he decides to dance with one of the wallflowers in the room and when he discovers Lady Cornelia among them, he thinks she is the right one.
I liked the book, sometimes I smile and some even laugh. The characters are nice but… sorry, but there are several buts.
I don’t understand why all the time people meeting Lady Cordelia and Lord Rockport think they are some low-class people just because they are not clean perfect after a long journey.
There is at least one inconsistency. When they are in the cabin on the ship it says: “Gerard pulled her closer to him, and his chin rested against the nape of her neck.” And several paragraphs after that it says: “Blankets rustled, and she extended her arms toward him as if she were reaching for a beacon. She wondered at his ability to traverse the room without injury, but in the next moment the bed sank.” So when did he go back to his hammock?
The sex scenes need to get better as they leave me totally cold. They didn’t transmit any passion at all. And I’m not saying they have to be more explicit or detailed but to have more feeling, to show the lust and passion they feel for each other.
Near the end, there are also several things that are quite unbelievable, although I’m not saying anything else because I don’t want to spoil the end.
All in all, I have to say that I enjoyed the book and I would like to read the rest of the series.

Marquess of Rockport, Lord Gerard Highgate never aspired to be on London's famous marriage mart recognized by Matchmaking for Wallflowers. Yet that's exactly where he landed before he put a stop to it. Lady Cordelia Haywood was a contributor to Matchmaking for Wallflowers but that has since ended. Lady Cordelia can't believe she's become a wallflower after much preparation into being a good wife and mate. Gerard can't believe he's even thinking about marriage to Lady Cordelia yet that's what he's doing. Lady Cordelia learns something about her father that changes everything in her life. Will either Cordelia or Gerard admit their feelings? Your answers await you in A Rogue to Avoid.

This new to me author showed her storyteller skills with aplomb I've not seen in a long time. The characters and story were intriguing, real, honest, down to earth, raw, gritty, complex, compelling, and flawed in a good way. I'm definitely put this author on my must read list.

I really detested this book. There was absolutely nothing likable ally the H, and I spent the majority of the time feeling sorry for the girl. There only seemed to be a physical connection between the two.

Stop Dithering and Get On with The Story!📚
ADULT Historical Recency Romance 💕 and Scottish Adventure. This is a romantic comedy starring Lord Gerald Highgate, Marquess of Rockport. He is listed in the top ten of marriagable Lords by the Matchmaking For Wallflowers pamphlet. He makes the mistake of writing to the editor to complain and ask them to take him off the list. Instead, the editor moves him to the top of the list and encourages young women of the ton to go to Scotland and seek him out! EGADS!

I got this ebook included with the six book series Matchmaking for Wallflowers" ( ARC Provided by Booksprout 🌱) available at the time of this review on Amazon 📚 with KU.

The book is excruciatingly slow moving.

Through no fault of the author or the book or the story, this did not work for me. To put is simply, I'm going through a phase where Regency historical romances are not exciting me, so while this story started out quite humorous and engaging, it did not hold my attention. From the little I read, it looked like it would be a cute story. I did, however, skip to the end to see how Gerard and Cordelia had their happy ending.

I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily reviewed this book. This is my honest review.

A Rogue to Avoid is the third book in this series, and in my opinion the most enjoyable of the three, with a well rounded story, depth of characters and adventure. We met Lady Cordelia in "How to Capture a Duke", with her icy demeanour, a product of her upbringing and class. However, knowing the rules and adhering to them strictly hasn't brought her success in the marriage market or happiness. She has one man to blame for her current state, namely Gerard Highgate, Marquess of Rockport, a man who dislikes Cordelia almost as much as she despises him.

Through a series of misadventures and misunderstandings, Cordelia finds herself on the run with Gerard, and the more danger they face, the more shared experiences they have, the more they grow to respect one another. Finally, when the chips are down and shocking truths emerge, both Gerard and Cordelia find that they have been lied to but have learned who they can trust. I especially enjoyed seeing the thaw of Lady Cordelia, and I loved the irreverent Gerard Highgate.

A most enjoyable read. Regency at its best.

A little silly, a little simple, but a fun enemies-to-lovers regency romance that was just the thing to read during a long, stressful week.

Cordelia has been raised to be prim and proper, but having three broken engagements behind her, the ton have turned against her. Still, she risks scandal to warn Gerard that his life is in danger, even though she can’t stand the man. Before she knows it, she’s eloping with him! Gerard has never liked Cordelia, but he does admire her attempt to save his life, even if he had already known it was in danger. Stuck together, he never expected to find he liked the woman.

This book was okay. For me, we did spend a lot of time wandering around and not really having much happen. Then, everything was just quickly wrapped up. I wasn’t sure what was going on with other characters as they were glossed over. Falling in love happened awfully quickly and out of nowhere, especially when they disliked each other before. The sex scene was far too brief. It exists, so the book isn’t clean (for those who prefer their stories that way), but it is far too hurried, as though the author was embarrassed (in which case, the author could have simply kept it clean). Instead, it’s rushed and I couldn’t help feeling sorry for poor Cordelia!

There were also some continuity errors. Such as when Gerard is holding Cordelia (despite us never being told he went to her)… only to then cross the room to touch her!

Overall, it was an okay read, but it just didn’t manage to really grab my attention.

This is season three for Lady Cordelia on the marriage mart. She is the daughter of a Duke who was raised to be everything that the ton envisioned as a lady. She would marry a Duke and run a household with aloof precision after all her nickname was the ice princess. However it was looking more and more like she would be a wallflower and perhaps a spinster if she didn’t make a match. Lord Rockport, who also happened to be a Scottish laird, was not in the market for a wife. In fact last year he would have nothing to do with Lady Codelia the ice princess. Lord Rockport hated balls and would not attend one; however he was chased into the ball by a thug wishing him harm. He needed to create a diversion so he danced with Cordelia. She by no means was interested in dancing with him as he had publicly denounced her writing in the Wallflower Handbook. Through a number of mishaps and misunderstandings they end up in a cross country run to Gretta Green to elope into an arranged marriage that protects both of them she would live in Kent and he would live in Scotland. Do they continue to hate each other or fall in love? I enjoyed this story and found it very entertaining. I love that Bianca Blythe writes strong female characters who stand up for what they want.

Gerard Highgate, Marquess of Rockport is considered A Rogue to Avoid due to his outspoken views on marriage and the role of the ton and the influence it has over an aristocrat's life. Lady Cordelia is a proper young lady with a history of three failed engagements and named as a contributor to the pamphlet known as the Matchmaker's of Wallflowers, which is additional scandal attached to her name.

Lord Rockport ducks into a country ball while being chased by a bully that wants to collect a debt from his late mother. He connects with Lady Cordelia although they share a mutual dislike for one another.

Lady Cordelia rescues Lord Rockport, he proposes which leads to an adventure as they travel to Greta Green to elope, then a sea voyage and more excitement when they arrive in Kent to finally be married.

The portrayal of how the ton controlled society is excellent. Gerard is a great fun, handsome hero and Lady Cordelia changes from a controlled young lady to a fun and great adventurous mate for the fun loving Gerard.

I borrowed A Rogue to Avoid from the Kindle Unlimited program.

Lady Cordelia, only daughter of a Duke, anonymously writes articles for Matchmaking for Wallflowers. She is a very prim and proper miss, and has been labeled Ice Princess. Recently she has lost her position with the magazine, for which she blames Gerald, Marquess of Rockport. Formerly named by the magazine as A Rogue to Avoid, he has written disparaging letters to the magazine, naming Cordelia as one of the writers. Fate brings them together when Cordelia overhears her father ordering the murder of Gerald. Thus begins an exciting journey, and a hilarious attempt to elope to Gretna Green.

Highly improbable and equally entertaining

This slapstick comedy of a Regency romance hd me in stitches. It was so much fun to watch Lady Cordelia's icy perfection just melt in the face of hot Scot Lord Gerard Highgate, Marquess of Rockport. It was funny and sweet the way Gerard, shameless womanizer and disdainer of all things British, just melts over Cordelia's audacity, courage, and especially her beauty. The plot is as silly and twisted - as if "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" had been moved to Britain in 1817. The author struggles at times with interjecting modern idiom into period dialogue. Still the madcap humor sets it apart and keeps it entertaining.

I had a hard time finishing this book because it made me cringe so much. The setup sounded fun and funny, but the execution was pretty bad.

Some notes:

1. The author seems to be fond of noting every single occasion when a character blinks. In fact, she’s mentions it 42 times.

2. I truly hate when a romance novel wastes time on characters that aren’t relevant to the plot solely because they’re the main characters in other books in the series. It’s awkward and it’s almost never well done. This book is not the exception.

3. It’s hard to buy a character’s angst when it’s so liberally interspersed with weak attempts at madcap comedy.

Completely silly. If you read this as a 30's style screwball comedy (I love that genre BTW) it's fun, but this is really, really not a regency. The language and the mores have very little to do with the early-to-mid 1800s. But I will admit to liking the first half of the book, with all of the running around and ridiculous situations. The hero is not a stock alpha, so don't expect the typical tough guy posturing and brooding, and while the heroine starts off as cold and rather unlikable, her character does go through some changes (maybe a bit too quickly). The book goes way off the deep end around the 80% point, though, and I wish the author had tried a little harder.

It was cute. I really liked the heroine. Authors don't write the popular mean girls as heroines very often and I enjoy seeing the human side of characters that present so superficially.

There were a few plot holes that stood out to me though. First, there is no way the heroine shot a pistol within feet of a ball and no one seemed to notice! Second, the villain's ability to consistently find them throughout the story was a stretch. Finally, it makes no sense that the duke's enforcer was actually his partner. He was a drunken meathead that used threats to get payments, not someone who would have been in charge of distributing and keeping track of loans.

Loved the book. The snobbish Lady Cordelia has already 3 broken engagements and can not understand why no one wants to dance with her and are snickering behind there fans about her.

When she saves Gerard, the Marquess of Rockport not once but twice from harm he thinks she's agreed to his marriage proposal. They are running away from her fathers henchman who was told to kill the Marquess. Love the twos antics as they race across Scotland and England to thawt the henchman. Love as they become closer and closer and Cordelia finally finds the love of her life!

Madcap adventure has some errors

Relocate this story's when and maybe even where to avoid inaccuracies regarding things like titles. The author writes a good story, but needs to do a bit more research on lines of succession (e.g., a marquees is their to a duke) and other details. (Strange how our hero never lacks for funds on this headlong flight through England.) Still, it's an enjoyable romp that keeps the reader's attention.

I really liked the majority of the book even though some scene transitions are just weird but the conclusion was really off. At least for me. It seems like two different people wrote it or it was written for two different type of stories. Anyway, I loved the progression of their relationship and Cordelia's. Gerard's a bit too perfect at times but, well, this is a romance novel.

A wonderfully written, fun book. Great plot line with romance and adventure and a little intrigue, from beginning to end. I loved reading about Gerard and Cordelia traveling throughout England and Scotland trying to find a place to get married, while keeping Gerard from getting killed over a debt. Ms. Blithe writes an enchanting book. Loved it all the way to the happily ever after.

A Good Read

I really enjoy reading Bianca Blythe books, I've read the first Matchmaking for Wallflowers book 1 and just finished book 2. This book brings back characters from the first book which I liked. The story kept me interested with all many predicaments they met along their journey. I'm looking forward to reading book 3.

Love in disguise of Despise

Lady Cordelia is a Dukes daughter who strives to be perfect in spite of 3 failed engagements! Gerard is desperate to repay a loan borrowed by his mother. There is strange chemistry between the couple and a henchman who wants to murder Gerard or cut off his fingers! Mayhem and madness are a hilarious part of this story! Love this series!
