Coming into this book I didn't realise it was a memoir.
I just thought it was like a motivational book.
However, it was an interesting read into following the journey Wolf Kuper is on.
I didn't know who he was or his profession hence following his journey was a little slow pace for me.
I like the doodles he does in his book.

The book is a good eye opener read.
It talks about family, life, reflection of career, dreams and the purpose of what we are doing.

This starts with a familiar (but adorable) premise - a young successful academic / bureaucrat, who is overworked and constantly feels guilty about leaving his wife and young kids at home (but probably secretly relieved to not need to deal with domestic issues) - was spurred by a casual remark by his young daughter to devote a million minutes of his time to his family, and to doing "the really nice things". This becomes a life-changing odyssey around the world, where Wolf and his family left Germany and spend then next nearly-2 years travelling to Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

This story will probably resonate with those of us who fantasise about quitting the rat race to have fun / relax / pursue our dreams. However, for a story that is so appealing, I have found it curiously flat. Maybe this is because it tends to offer narrative without personal reflection: the chapters were a series of anecdotes about people and journeys but didn't really explain or explore why Wolf and his family decided to do those things, and not much about what Wolf learnt from the experience. This was particularly noticeable in the early chapters, where they seemed to have made this huge decision based upon a single casual remark, summarised in only a few pages. Moreover, I would love to hear directly from the other members of the family - not only Nina, the physically-disabled yet creative and imaginative daughter; but also Vera, the long-suffering wife (caring for a newborn and a young child with developmental issues practically on her own; whilst also juggling her own career which, curiously, was only alluded to once, and without describing what her profession was).

Manchmal tiefgründig und generell nachdenklich stimmend, teilweise mir persönlich zu detailliert und langatmig. Bin jetzt gespannt auf den Film.

Das Buch war ein Zufallskauf, den ich bei einem Ausverkauf einer Buchhandlung ergattert habe. Nachdem ich angefangen hatte, konnte ich es nicht mehr weglegen. Eine so wunderschöne Erzählung über das Leben, spontane Ideen und geänderte Lebenspläne.
Ich kann immer noch nicht aufhören über das Buch zu schwärmen und empfehle es ständig weiter!

The author writes about three topics in this book: About saving his family life by neglecting his career, about bonding with his special daughter and about traveling the world and getting to know interesting people. On the one hand that's great because it doesn't get monotonous but on the other hand there's no real focus on any of the topics and in the end none of them finish really satisfyingly.

But in general it was one of the better books I've read this year. The author tries a little too hard to write funny and entertaining, but most of the time it actually works and is enjoyable. The story has huge timeskips so it concentrates on stories which are really worth telling and for being autobiographic I was actually touched by all the characters and yes, I kind of bonded with Wolf, Nina and Vera.

I would've liked some real conclusion in the end, but either way I was touched several times by the story and the author's thoughts about balancing his career, his wishes for the future, his family and the expectations of society.

Mon avis : Il y a des livres que l’on dévore vite tant l’histoire nous passionne. J’ai même vu récemment que l’on peut apprendre à lire beaucoup plus rapidement. Apparemment, il existe même des concours de lectures rapides. Mais pour certains livres, personnellement, je préfère prendre mon temps. C’est le cas de ce livre ! On n’a pas envie de quitter les aventures de cette famille. La petite Nina est émouvante et nous interroge constamment sur notre utilisation du temps. Ce voyage de deux ans à la découverte de nouvelles cultures est agréable à lire. Au fil du voyage, le père découvre un autre visage de ses enfants ou plutôt il découvre ses enfants. Nina apprend également à connaitre ce père qui avait si peu de temps à lui accorder dans leur ancienne vie. Peut-on vraiment connaitre nos proches, au milieu de ce rythme métro, boulot, dodo ? Ce livre nous invite à poser sur la vie, un autre regard ! une vraie pépite ! Mon deuxième coup de cœur de 2022 ! Mon seul petit bémol, je trouve la mère , un peu trop en retrait. Je vous le conseille vivement !

Wenn mich ein Film oder eine Serie interessiert, der/die auf einem Buch basiert, versuche ich vor dem Schauen zuerst das Buch zu lesen. So jetzt auch bei "Eine Million Minuten".

In diesem Fall bin ich wahnsinnig froh drum. Wolf Küper schafft es wirklich ganz hervorragend mich mit auf die eine Million Minuten zu nehmen - und dabei auch noch vieles wirklich gut nachvollziehen oder zumindest verstehen zu können. Was er auch richtig gut macht: mich in seine und auch in Ninas Welt inklusive aller Gedanken, Stolpersteine, schönen und traurigen Momente und Gefühle hineinzuziehen. Was ich erstaunlich finde, da ihre Lebensrealitäten von meiner doch recht weit entfernt sind. Doch das macht wohl einfach auch ein gutes Buch aus...

Und: Das Buch regt zum Nachdenken an, ohne dabei belehrend, altklug, arrogant oder besserwisserisch daher zu kommen.

Und (2): Küper haut immer wieder so einzelne, wunderbare Sätze raus, das Sprachliebhabern einfach warm ums Herz werden muss!

Das Buch ist wirklich jede Minute wert, die man mit ihm verbringt. Lieb ich. 4,5 Sterne.

I found the premise of the book fascinating but then was so disappointed how surface level it stayed throughout. The author tried to fill the book with humorous observations but they seemed callous and vacuous. I especially found the European centric view of Australia galling. He describes being moved when making a speech about discovering and naming new lands in a game with his child. The one moment in the book where he gets a bit emotional. He doesn't reflect Australia's colonial past and the First Nations perspective at all.

Ich hatte den Film gesehen, welcher mir ausgesprochen gut gefallen hat. Nun musste ich das Buch lesen.

Das Buch ist sehr ausführlich bezüglich der Reise und enthält auch viele Gedanken von Wolf Küper. Es hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Jedoch habe ich ein klein wenig Inhalt von der Frau vermisst. Eine beeindruckende Reise, die die Familie zu Gunsten der Familie und für Nina gemacht hat.

Interessieren würde mich nun, was die Familie Küper nachhaltig aus der Reise für sich mitgenommen hat.

Kann das Buch und Film wirklich sehr empfehlen.

Das Buch handelt von Zeit und die Lektüre nimmt nicht viel in Anspruch. Das ist gut.
Solltest Du bald auch mal als Business-Class fliegender UN-Mensch das Gefühl haben, die Rolex für den Outback einzutauschen, könnte dies deine Anleitung sein. Für alle anderen ist es wohl einfach eine seichte und kurzweilige Lektüre, die oft zum Schmunzeln einlädt.

Guter Ansatz von einem Roman leider nimmt die ganze Geschichte ab der Mitte ungefähr ab und was das Mädchen in dem Buch hat wird auch nicht klar. Das Ende empfinde ich als schlecht, langgezogen als ob die Kreativität dann einen riesigen Leerlauf hätte.

Has it ever occured to you to just leave your life and work behind in exchange of traveling? I mean, that’s pretty much a lot of us in everyday. We are unhappy with work, we don’t have enough time to spend with our loved ones, we are constantly worrying about deadlines etc. Working comprises of the majority of our average life. In this memoir by Wolf, he showed us how his daughter’s idea of spending a million minutes came about in what would be the best time and best spent money they could ever spare. Memories will never be forgotten, the time spent or did not spent with your loved ones are irrevocable. He taught us how to stop, breathe and spare our time. It may not be an ideally suitable path for most of us. I fet stressed thinking about not working or earning money for 2 years and I already know i won’t be able to venture in the same path. However, i am not saying im against it. In fact, i support the idea of pausing our life to spend the minutes that are most valuable to us. And those are the ones with our loved ones and for ourselves. A similar approach i would do is to travel with the whole family and make memories that lasts a lifetime

I had ordered this book before the coronavirus hit the world ,and arrived mid quarantine ,being in a "risk" group ,I had a find a way to get my books from the post office ,thankfully a masked volunteer did that for me ,I only could see his curls and glasses . Back to the book: It was just what I needed these days , easily read ,some philosophy, a family with the two small children ,one with special needs ,a special father that took his daughter seriously ,made me look back at my 21 days of quarantine and more to come ...and think about time and choices . Questions like what is "normal ", where is "home"pop up . Here is a man that took action ,instead of wishing things were different .

L'histoire vraie d’une famille allemande qui quitte tout pour partir un million de minutes (2 ans). Ils passent par la Thaïlande, l’Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande avec leurs deux enfants. En fait leur petite fille de 4 ans a un souci cognitif: elle est très lente dans tout ce qu’elle fait et parfois elle n’arrive pas à faire certaines choses qui nous paraissent si simples.
C’est une chouette histoire qui aborde les cases dans lesquels on nous met (et celles où l’on se met soi-même), le temps gagner, les chocs culturels... gros coup de cœur de mon été
