LOVE. DEATH. ZOMBIES. DEMONS. TEDDY BEARS. FIGMENTS OF YOUR IMAGINATION. Those are just a few of the things waiting for you inside Adam P. Knave's CRAZY LITTLE THINGS. Horror collides with just about every other genre within reach to help bring his twisted worlds to life. These twelve tales of strangeness include three new stories exclusive to this "Pretty Little Dead Girls," "Dead Side Story" and "Causing Effect." Also included are both legendary Mister Binkles tales, as well as the critically acclaimed novella, Crazy Little Thing.
Adam P. Knave is an Eisner and Harvey award winning editor and writer who writes prose fiction (This Starry Deep, Stays Crunchy in Milk, Strange Angel), comics (The Once and Future Queen, Amelia Cole, Artful Daggers, stories in Titmouse Vol 2, Outlaw Territory Vol 3, and many more), as well as humor essay collections (NYCWTF, I Slept With Your Imaginary Friend) and used to write columns for sites such as thefoonote, TwoHeadedCat, Comics101, PopCultureShock, Three If By Space, and MamaPop. He worked as one of the editors of Image’s Popgun anthology, also editing many other works along the way.
Currently in Portland, OR after spending 38 years in New York City, Adam knows he should insert a joke or something attempting to be witty here at the end but is too tired to care.
My horror has a first name; it’s A-D-A-M-P. My horror has a last name; it’s K-N-A-V-E. That’s right boys and girls, me likey this chapbook. Okay sure the print was microscopic and the cover has a picture of a broken heart on a plain white background, but the story was fantastic! Knave delivered a scintillating tale that made you think and, more importantly, made you feel.
Setting the mood, the atmosphere is an intimidating chameleon. That’s right; in this little story the atmosphere is an invisible character. Stable and welcoming, the background invites you into this world with open arms and a wide smile. It’s only as the pages turn and the play is started that the atmosphere twist and suddenly turns on you like a pimp on pay day. Beautiful!
The plot, while interesting and intriguing in its barest outline, is carried out by the characters. Yet, somehow Knave avoided the misdemeanors that most authors commit by balancing out both aspects. Original and creative, the plot and characters are deep, but not too heavy to carry. You’ll feel their panic and paranoia and you’ll see through their eyes as they try to navigate through their shrouded world. That intentional aim helps the pace as well. Slow and steady, the speed of the story is set to a subtle beat that only intensifies the more immersed you are.
Knave’s style of writing is what really sets this story off. His voice is distanced, but empathetic; casual and conversational in tone, but honest with his revelations. You’ll find yourself absorbing Knave’s style and not only understanding where he’s coming from, but will dive at the chance to see where he’s going.
My rating? I give it a 4.5. Not only will this chap capture your mind and rip out your heart, but it’s cheap as hell too. At the small cost of only $6.95, order this book today and see the emergence of one of Horror’s up and comers!!!!
