This book provides a comprehensive approach to PCOS. I have had PCOS for over 10 years with little improvement, so I was very pleased when I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley. It is nice to find a book that actually takes this condition seriously Many gynaecologist and family doctors have brushed women off and not listened to their patients concerns. I usually do not look to a naturopathic approach but I am glad I decided to read Dr. McCulloch’s book. She starts the book by defining what PCOS is and also the many subsets of the condition. Each woman experiences PCOS in a different way and McCulloch is aware of this. One woman can experience weight gain and facial hair, while another is skinny with elevated cholesterol. I also like that Dr. McCulloch is Canadian and understands the frustrations that many women face in our health care system.

She provides 8 specific steps for reversing PCOS and goes into great deal to explain not only how to do so but also reasons why each step is important. She backs up all her facts with research which gives some evidence to her naturopathic medicine. Her advice would be helpful for all women and patients in general. Following a low inflammation diet and exciting more are advice that would benefit everyone.

I honestly think this book would be especially useful for someone who is newly diagnosed with PCOS. Doctors can’t or won’t spend the time to review just how much this condition can affect you. It is usually not until woman is expiring complications such as infertility or several menstrual/hormonal disorders that she goes to her doctor for more. This book would be an excellent resource and should not be overlooked

My naturopathic doctor recommend this book to me when she told me that I have PCOS. It is written from the perspective of holistic medicine as the author is also naturopathic doctor and someone who has PCOS herself.

This book is very detailed and offers lots of amazing recommendations for herbal supplements. It would be a FANTASTIC resource for someone who cannot afford regular doctor's visits, or naturopathic services, although I have to stress it should not be used as a substitute to medical supervision.

If you even suspect there is something wrong with your thyroid, hormones, or menstrual cycle, definitely go get checked for this and do some research before you go to your doc. Some of the tests are not routine which is why I had all the symptoms and still went un-diagnosed for years.

Back to the book.

It is incredibly in-depth and very "smart". I am a decently intelligent individual, I have a university degree and a college degree. And I had trouble understanding it at times. If you have an interest in the medical sciences, this would be more helpful. I do not and definitely got lost at times.

However, I still gained a deeper understanding of this disorder and how to treat it. This enabled me to bring ideas and questions to my doctor that I might not otherwise know to ask. I was able to better understand how severe / not severe my disorder was (because there can be a huge scale with PCOS).

And the naturopathic treatments are helping. So I recommend this book if you are the type of person who is interested in medicine or were smart enough to pursue a post-secondary education. If you struggled in school, this book would probably be a waste of time and become a source of frustration, but there are other resources out there.

Additionally, I would recommend purchasing this book rather than borrowing it. I found it very helpful to highlight charts that scale blood test results so you know which category you fall in. This is great for referring back to in the future! Also, I highlighted sections I needed to ask questions about and supplements I wanted to try, to chat with my doctor about.

This book made me cry!

Yes, I was crying while reading the cases stories at the beginning of each chapter because I was like reading my story in details written by someone else. The book is describing exactly my symptoms, my thoughts , my feelings , my fears and my pain. And not just describing symptoms but giving it a name, causing and treatment.

I can’t believe I have lived 12 years with pcos without knowing what is going on with my body. Although I was searching online like a worm but never found those information in somewhere else except this book. No one have helped me before as this book do. Drs just sent me home with “ it’s ok, a lot of women have it” statement or with pills ( birth control) that made me worse and make my symptoms much worse.
If you are sick of the pharmaceuticals pills and interested in discovering that amazing natural treatment, so this book is for you. If you are ready to live in non-toxicity environment and start a journey of healing, so his book for you. If you already started some supplements but you don't get any results, so this book for you because you will know exactly what supplements are good for you and what is the appropriate dosage. Also she offered advice on the pharmaceutical solutions. If you are asking why my symptoms are different than my friend's symptoms who has also PCOS, so this book for you. If you have PCOS, this book is must-read for you.

I can’t thank you enough dr Fiona for this book. This book gave me my life back after a lot of suffering. Not only by the suggested supplements but - first- by making me understand much more about myself, my body, my mind, my future.

Thanks for writing this book that will help a lot of women and prevent a lot of suffering.

It took me several months to finish this book because the information felt emotionally overwhelming. You feel seen in all the stories the author shares, or see yourself on symptom lists...but then it feels depressing like why does this have to happen to me?

I took a ton of notes reading this to the point where I should just buy a hard copy to keep on hand. The author's meal ideas were super helpful to me, along with listing the various types and dosages of natural supplements to try. I definitely finished this book feeling motivated to tackle new ways to help my health.

If it's your first book about PCOS it will be very informative.
If not, it won't. I've come to the conclusion that when it comes to books like this, it is not worthy it to keep reading all there is about it. It becomes confusing and contradictory. Women's health has been neglected over many years in traditional medicine and of course one of the results is this, we don't know who to trust or what is true. Fiona crated an eating protocol based on a glycemic index-like system, however the book does not provide enough information to follow such protocol. The book presents lots of info (which in my case was not new info) then moves on to suggest the protocol. The only way to actually follow it is by being her client (which many professionals like herself do-write somewhat shallow books to attract prospective patients), or following a very basic list of recipes which for someone like me, from Brazil, who eats amazing Brazilian food on a regular basis, just don't make sense and take all the pleasure of eating out of the process).

I cannot recommend this book enough! When my doctor first suggested I may have PCOS, he just put me on birth control and told me to lose weight. He didn't do any blood/hormone tests or an ultrasound, and he also prescribed me one of the few birth control pills that actually contains androgens, which women with PCOS have too much of already and is a part of causing PCOS! It wasn't until I started doing my own research months later that I realized how baffling this was. Also, it's more difficult for women with PCOS to lose weight, and often PCOS causes weight gain. Unfortunately, so many women diagnosed with PCOS are treated this way, rather than doctors helping them with the root causes, since there's several things that can cause PCOS.

This book was has been one of the tools that have been so helpful for me in not only understanding my diagnosis, but also helping me treat the root causes of PCOS rather than putting a band-aid on there. This is a great place to start if you've just been diagnosed with PCOS, or if you're looking to know more about it.

I highly recommend anyone with PCOS to read this book. None of my doctors took the time to explain what PCOS really is or what it's doing to my body, especially the long-term effects if it isn't in control. They simply suggested I lose weight and maybe try keto. Ha! This book explains exactly why you are experiencing certain symptoms and why this condition makes it hard to lose weight. You can't fight a battle when you have no idea what the cause is. I already feel so much better knowing there are other remedies I can try on my own with proven scientific results. I only wish I could have started healing myself sooner in life and that doctors took it more seriously when I repeatedly tried to tell them something is wrong.

I really appreciated this book, as it was thoroughly informative, holistic, and practical. I loved the quiz at the beginning to determine my personal PCOS type, which helped inform which chapters to pay attention to for my specific case. At times the scientific terms went over my head or I felt a bit lost amidst all the details and technicalities, but overall this book really helped me in my health journey, and I'm thankful that this is a resource for me and all my fellow cysters!

2025 reads book 10

Got diagnosed last year and only received the tip "go back to hormonal birth control and come back when you want to get pregnant." I am not a person who is against hormonal birth control, I think it is a wonderful tool and one I used for 9 years, but my goal was to have regular ovulation. Going back to the pill would not help that.

This book has a very clear explanation of what PCOS is, and while the author also says that PCOS can not be cured, she gives a lot of information and options that you can do (both in medical and natural ways) to reverse some of the symptoms, or keep the symptoms under control. The book also includes an appendix with a bunch of PCOS friendly recipes that seem pretty nice and that I want to try!

I'm not going to rate this book because I think it's use to everyone depends on their prior knowledge of PCOS and what they hope to get out of this book. With that said I've done a lot of research on my own and spoken to many healthcare professionals so what I liked most about this book were the natural remedies that are sometimes missing from western medicine. I think it gives an incredibly well rounded oversight of the condition, the types, and things people can do to improve symptoms. There is a bias towards natural remedies which I don't have a problem with as that is the perspective I was missing from my current health care but overall I do think it was great and I did learn things.

I was able to self diagnose and treat with the help of this book. I cannot fully express what a positive impact this book has had on my life. I had seen countless doctors who continued to tell me nothing was wrong. This book empowered me not only by giving me knowledge but by believing me.

This was a very informative book! I appreciate how comprehensive Dr. McCulloch is. She leverages peer-reviewed, empirical research as well as anecdotes from clinical practice. Yes, sometimes she gets into the weeds of how things work, but I love that about the book! I read it word for word for the parts that were relevant to me (e.g. how DHEA-S and other androgens work) and skipped over some of the detailed descriptions of PCOS symptoms that were less relevant for me (but was excited to have this resource if they become more problematic for me).

A few observations (not critiques, just comments): First, much of the advice revolves around taking different supplements. I wrote down all the suggested supplements and had a list of about 30 or 40 different natural remedies. My reaction was three-fold. First: how great is it that someone has actually chronicled all the possible remedies for every possible PCOS issue/symptom? Wow. I'm thankful! Second: holy moly, this is overwhelming, and experiments should definitely be guided by a medical professional. Third: I'm a little overwhelmed/anxious about using supplements in general as they are not as widely regulated as traditional pharmaceuticals. Just because something is found in nature and considered a supplement, it doesn't mean it is safe to take, and it scares me that many supplements are not regulated at all by a third party. This is not Dr. McCulloch's fault, but I just wanted to share that reaction... I'm not sure how many of the treatments I will be willing to test.

With regard to diet, I became vegetarian 6 years ago (I try to eat mostly whole foods) and it helped tremendously. I recommend that others read "How Not to Die" for more nutrition guidance (not specific to PCOS, but useful nonetheless for achieving greater health). There's quite a lot of evidence that animal products cause diabetes (which relates to insulin resistance) so I'm not sure if it's actually a good idea that we eat any animal products at all. I agree with Dr. McCulloch that we should avoid dairy.

Eating 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily helped my acne and restore my periods. I put that here in case it helps someone else.

Thanks, Dr. McCulloch!

This book is a great resource for anyone with PCOS. The author goes into detail about the hormones involved in PCOS, how it affects the body, and a range of natural supplements that can help various symptoms.

Pros of book:
-Focus on natural supplements, as well as specific dosages that might be helpful. However, she also covers pharmaceutical options for a well-rounded view of treatment options.
-Specific guidance of lifestyle changes and diet changes that may work, without trying to only prescribe weight loss for everything
-Tailored guidance for difference kinds of PCOS. PCOS is not all one-size-fits-all, and I appreciate that the author does not present her recommendations that way. As someone with "lean" PCOS who does not have any sign of insulin resistance, I appreciate that she calls out which pieces of guidance I should follow and which are less relevant.

Cons of Book:
-I think this book could be extremely overwhelming for someone newly diagnosed (or someone who only suspects they have PCOS but have not been diagnosed). The author discusses dozens of hormones at play with PCOS and what seemed like 50 different potential supplements (I didn't count, but it was a lot!) that each address specific types of issues associated with PCOS (e.g. if you have insulin resistance, try taking XYZ; if you have Ovarian Androgen dominance take ABC; if you have low thyroid function, take 123, etc.). I think this could be extremely overwhelming for someone who doesn't truly understand which "type" of PCOS they have and what their lab tests and ultrasounds show. While she does have various quizzes to try to identify which type you have, this is no substitute for medical evaluation and actual blood work. Worst case - I think this could lead to someone overdoing the supplements or focusing too broadly without addressing their specific needs.

I would NOT recommend someone reading this book before going to their Dr. and getting a full hormone panel done for PCOS as well as blood tests to determine insulin resistance. With those results in hand, this book becomes much more valuable and less overwhelming.

Everything in this book was very helpful except for the last chapter, Eating a Balanced Diet. I am a vegan and while being vegan was briefly mentioned previously in the book, there was no diet plan or mention of vegans, vegetarians or any other type of diet mentioned in this chapter, which I think is important to include. A lot of the information describing animal products was contradictory to information I've read about from Dr. Michael Greger, who wrote How Not to Die and runs the website nutritionfacts.org. I strongly urge everyone, especially those with PCOS, to check out that book and website as well. Dr. Greger's information is not funded by food corporations and the diet he promotes, a plant based diet, is proven to stop and REVERSE heart disease, among having many MANY other benefits to your health. The author was right in not recommending diary, but it should extend to avoiding all animal products. There is a new (2017) documentary on Netflix where Dr. Greger also speaks to these issues called What the Health. It explains exactly why animal products are damaging to our health, causing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Please do more research on a plant based diet instead of taking from this book.

This book is extremely thorough and very well-written. I found the explanations of various medical problems that arise during PCOS very helpful and I feel prepared and well-armed to meet with my OBGYN to discuss tests to determine my levels of various hormones, ranging from the well-known estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone to the various thyroid hormones that may be impacting the express of my PCOS. I also appreciated the lists of prescription drugs, hormonal treatments, diet modifications, and supplements that can be helpful depending on the symptoms of PCOS that an individual experiences. I am planning on asking my OBGYN about several of the supplements and drugs described in the book that may help jump-start the reversal of my more extreme PCOS symptoms and Type 2 diabetes. I am very grateful that the author has been so detailed (and compassionate!) in writing this book.

Great book if you are trying to get your PCOS under control. Everything is backed up by science and well-researched sources.

This book allows you to determine the type of PCOS you have and goes into all of the hormonal systems that affect us. I really liked how this book explains how PCOS affects our body down to a scientific level.

It gives us natural supplement recommendations and dietary changes to make to reverse our PCOS and increase fertility! I already have a supplement routine I’ve created for myself based off the recommendations in this book and i cannot wait to start my journey to reverse my PCOS!

Hands down, best book written on PCOS. All-encompassing of the illness and super beneficial concerning foods to eat and avoid, and the essential supplements, herbs and oils to use to keep the symptoms of the illness under control or even reverse them!

It encouraged me to create my own "PCOS Reversing" list where I summarized the suggested treatment for my own reference.
I also am keeping this book on my e-library for future reference concerning issues like fertility.
This restored my hope.

My first actual book on the topic, up until now I have been reading google articles and watching tiktoks to educate myself on PCOS but this has been very much helpful. I’m not very sure about the dietary advice about the consumption of dairy and also the topic of legumes/beans etc but it is worth highlighting that the book is soon a decade old. Hope there is something fresher out there to continue reading but this is a good solid foundation for those only discovering the diagnosis .

One of the best books I have ever read! I recommend it to all women, whether you have PCOS or not. This book helps you truly understand your body, your hormones, and how food impacts your health. It covers so many important phases of a woman’s life, including pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause. The authors also included healthy recipes to support a balanced lifestyle. It’s not just about reversing PCOS, it’s about taking control of your health in every stage of life.

This book was very helpful, but was almost a water-hose of information. I was diagnosed not too long ago and was quickly overwhelmed with all the changes I needed to do. I would not recommend this to someone who has just been diagnosed and is trying to find out more about it. This should be the second or third book you read about it. Lots of good information though!

This book was really interesting with lots of great description about the reproductive cycle and the hormones involved. Some of the things she suggests I feel are more based on anecdotal evidence than actual science, but that's to be expected from naturopaths. I'll be trying out some of these tips and reporting back!

So informative. A lot of information that it was a little overwhelming at first. Not jumbled up with an excessive amount of jargon only reserved for those in the medical field.

Appreciated the layout breaking condition treatment into naturopathic treatments and prescribed medicines. Helped to explain WHY things happen not just what. Will definitely be keeping this book as a handy reference.

A “it’s not you, it’s me” review. Cars and med terms bore me and that’s my own issue. This book was all med terms I already forgot. I skipped many pages. Maybe I’m in denial, idk but I didn’t really read much other than what might have caught my eye when flipping pages. Luckily, I work with a trainer now who has more knowledge about PCOS than me now. She’s very passionate about it too.

Interesting.

This book was both educational and enlightening. I already knew a few things about PCOS, but it is always a good idea to read up on new material every few years. I hope to see some positive chances after I add herbal supplements to my regimen.
