A mysterious house hides dark secrets, protected by the greatest power in the land.
When her daughter Katie vanishes just a few days after arriving in London, Winifred Wren immediately heads to the city. Frantic with worry, she quickly finds herself stonewalled. Katie's apartment appears to have been ransacked, with strange symbols daubed all over the walls, but the police refuse to help.
And then Winifred meets Annabelle Churchill, a down-on-her-luck journalist who claims to know the truth.
Soon, Winifred learns about the horrors that lurk behind some of London's doors. A mysterious house is said to hide an ancient society, and it quickly becomes apparent that Katie has been drawn into the clutches of a cult. Dark forces are gathering, and an ancient evil is about to be invoked. Meanwhile, the crows and ravens of the city are gathering, preparing for a day that was prophesied two thousand years ago.
The Disappearance of Katie Wren is a horror novel about one woman's search for her daughter, and about the secrets that lurk in one of the world's largest cities.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
I’ve got a ton of Amy Cross books on my Kindle. It amazes me how quickly she pumps out so many great looking books with unique and innovative synopses. It’s about bloody time I read one.
So, I decided to start with The Disappearance of Katie Wren. The idea of a frantic mother searching the streets of London for her missing daughter was an intriguing one. I love a dark, mysterious book with sinister overtones. A perfect place to start.
Amy Cross crafted a captivating story. The Disappearance of Katie Wren is a fast-paced tour of the underbelly of London. I was pulled into the search for Katie, I think that I wanted to find her as much as her mum did.
Katie’s mum, Winifred Wren, carries the story. Winifred was the perfect character, a widow from small town England. I could picture my own mother in the role. She was a naïve, bumbling woman overwhelmed but somehow not intimidated by the big city. She offered just the right amount of comic relief to the story.
Although the story could use a thorough proofing, it was a fun read and I will not hesitate to read more books by Amy Cross.
This is a real page turner, and full of surprises. I felt the ending to be a little weak, but apart from that it was flawless. It was full of original touches, which I have come to expect from Amy Cross, that raises it above the average horror novel. I am looking forward to reading my next Amy Cross novel.
This could have been an excellent tale of demonic possession but it, somehow, lost its way as the story limped towards a predictable ending. A deranged, naïve and unworldly mother figure dominated the story in an unnecessary fashion. This character was annoying in the extreme and led me to mark down the book by one star.
There could have been so many good things about The Disappearance of Katie Wren but its rushed execution, 2-dimensional characters and typos don't allow it to go where it should have. It's a good story, I read to the end, but I was glad when it was over.
Winifred Wren read like an 80-year-old rather than a middle-age mother. Annabel is a caricature of a 50's investigator. Like all of Cross's books, had this been given more time, attention to detail and thought, it could have been brilliant. Unfortunately, it wasn't given those things.
Winnie Wren can only be described as the most annoying character I’ve ever met. How could she remain in denial throughout the entire book? I can almost hear her nasally voice in my head. She reminds me of the insufferable mothers from Texas... bless her heart . Aside from that, the story idea was pretty hastily put together and the writing was a bit droll. Re-using the word “hissed” as much as the word “the” . Honestly, I’m actually embarrassed that I read the whole book all the way to the non-ending.....
I loved this book. It was an easy read and a real page turner. Could barely put it down and when i did i couldn't wait to get back to it. Spoilers** I especially loved how it did not necessarily have a happy ending, I like it how they didn't stop it from happening and all lived happily ever after. I was secretly rooting that something bad happens and Katie dies. And she kind off did. I love the cliffhanger and did not expect the last call. All in all it was a great read! Can't wait to dig into more Amy Cross.

So, it took me a while to really get into this story and I felt there was a lot of filler scenes that didn't progress the story, but I was still desperate to find out what happened to Katie. Her mother was very annoying and I haven't decided if that added to the stoity or took from it, but man she was irritating. All in all, this was mysterious and thrilling read once I finally go into it. Slower than I'd liked but still pretty good.
I gave it four stars because it is a different story plot to hauntings etc. BUT I kept getting annoyed at the character of the mother. Seriously, the character was just so dumb and annoying, making SO MANY EXCUSES that undeterred from a great plot. Please let part 2 be better.
Another great book by this awesome author. The storyline was different than her usual novels. It dealt with the cult life and how quickly someone an be drawn in. A truly scary read that ended with me having more questions.
... But I had to finish it as soon as possible. Katie when goes to london, leaving her mum alone at home. Katie starts behaving oddly, the she just seems to disappear, and her mum Winifred goes to london to find her.
Kept you intrigued until the very end, although the ending was a little bland. Love Amy Cross books as they're easy to devour in an afternoon over coffee.
Another Great Amy Cross books. A bit mysterious and interesting news reporter and they whole thing comes to light. You'll have to read it to believe it so give it a try.
Loved this story and couldn't put it down until approximately 3/4 thru when the story became vague and rushed and sloppy. I was very disappointed in the ending. This had the beginnings of a fantastic, wicked story. Still, love the author.
I truly enjoyed reading titles by Amy Cross. This one was especially good because it was really easy good read. Not really scary but interesting enough to keep your interest to the end.
One of author's better books but still too many misprints and spelling errors. Amy Cross is very creative and descriptive but the printed errors make her appear to be sloppy.
Love the characters. This book will surprise you. There were a few editing errors but doesn't detract from the storyline. Wish it was a chapter longer. One of Amy's great stories. Kept me awake.
I just started reading Amy Cross and I am enthralled! This book was great in every way. I was hooked from the first page to the last, I only wish it had kept going. I want to know more! Five stars. Read it, you won't be disappointed.
