Axel was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn’t think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition.

He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art and then set up home in London. Axel illustrated a number of books for various publishers, and in 1993 Kate suggested him as the illustrator for Julia Donaldson’s first picture book text, A Squash and a Squeeze. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership: their bestselling modern classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over three-and-a-half million copies worldwide, and the TV animation was broadcast on Christmas day 2009.

Axel has illustrated a number of other highly successful books, including Muddle Farm, and his books have been translated into 42 languages.

Axel lives in London with his partner and young daughter.

Pip and Posy go to the beach and they meet a new friend. Nice simple story where I was able to download a free audio so we could listen to it whilst reading.

Pip and Posy are either friends or siblings, but anyways, they head to the beach on a summer day and do many beach things. Posy gets tired and sleeps, while Pip meets their beach neighbor, Zac. Posy seems to get jealous feeling as well as left out while Pip and Zac are playing. They all go get ice cream and while they are eating, a seagull takes Zac's ice cream, which makes him very sad. So to be nice to her new friend, Posy gives the last of her money to help Zac out. When they get back to the beach they want to do what Posy wants, so they built a huge sandcastle.
I liked this book because it seems like a lot of kids have the feeling of being left out or being lonely, so this book can show them different qualities in friends to look for such as the ability to share and wanting to make others feel happy.
I would use this as a class read for elementary students or SPED because the language is easy, neat pictures, and the story would be a great source or topic to teach to little ones. It can teach the kids to be nice to everyone and will also teach kids to include everyone because feeling left out isn't fun.

The storyline is a bit problematic as with some other titles in this series.

The basic plot revolves around these two best friends going to the beach and enjoying themselves. But then the boy befriends another boy, leaving the girl feeling invisible and left out.

So far so good....but this typical kind of social tension is resolved when the girl (feeling an outsider) buys a new ice cream for the new boy when his is stolen by the seagull.

Kind of sends the message that you need to buy your way into cliques to be accepted. Would have been more powerful if the new boy gets (maybe by explaining to shopkeeper what happened rather than buying) a new ice cream for the girl. This would show that he was aware of trying to include her all along.

May be looking too closely into a kid book but pre school aged kids read these things over and over and are very shaped by what they read and see.

We love love love this range of books. SO gentle and always with a little lesson to be learned. The pictures always give us plenty to talk about and we usually have lots of birds to count or a funny expression to notice

Highly recommended as my daughter has loved these from around the age of 1 and still loves them now at nearly 3

Summary:
Pip and Posy were two friends who decided to go to the beach. They arrived at the beach, ready for a fun day! They played in the ocean, dug in the sand, and just had fun together. Then posy decided to take a nap, while she was sleeping pip made a new friend, named Zac. When posy awoke she was a little sad to see that she had been replaced. The story then tells the journey of friendship, including others and caring for your friends.

Personal Opinion: I really did like this book. At first I thought it was a little strange because they were going to the beach. I did not see a point in the book, then as I read I learned that the book were about, caring, sacrificing, including, and loving others. This book has a lot of lessons that are beneficial for kids in elementary school to learn.

Classroom usage:
This book would be very beneficial to use in the classroom, of younger children. Kindergarten to third grade would enjoy this book. I think that you could ask the kids if they have ever felt left out, and then ask them to tell you how to include everyone. You could have them do trust and friendship building exercises. The kids would then know to include everyone in activities at recess and so on.

Proste i mądre i kropka.

Axel Scheffler is, of course, Mr Gruffalo and – in this new soft-cloth, cushioned book for very young children – he uses his distinct style of illustration to tell us a story about friendship.

Pip and Posy are two close friends who go on a trip to the sunny seaside. They have a fun time together but, when Posy has a nap, Pip makes another friend an leaves Posy out of their games. As you’d expect, Posy is quite upset. But this gentle little tale – with an obvious message to children of always include your friends in what you do – leads us quickly round to a lovely ending where, after some animal antics, Pip, Posy and their new friend all have lots of fun together.

If you’ve got a toddler, or young child, this book is perfect because the illustrations are bold, cute and the story is very straightforward.

AS is such a talented illustrator, I love his pictures.
He should stay an illustrator.
The P&P stories are so over-simplified they creak and crack, but this one almost did me in. Okay, so P&P go to the beach (I never know which is which, again the proof that he is not a writer) and P falls asleep. While she sleeps, P meets an other friend and they play. Until this point, i say, well, simple but not offending.
But then.
But then, when the new dog friend loses his ice cream, P *BUYS HIM* an other one. What the daisy?!? Are we really teaching kids they should BUY FRIENDSHIP? They should pay for the sin of thinking ugly of a friend?
Also, while P&P lick one scoop, the new friend has 3.
This is just so unfair.

Scheffler, Axel Pip and Posy: The New Friend. PICTURE BOOK. Nosy Crow (Candlewick Press), 2017. $12.99.

Pip and Posy embark on a day at the beach and make a new friend while they are there. This book lacks a certain magic in the story, it explores nice themes of friendship, being left out, and generosity but felt very generic. The illustrations of the beach and beach day activities were well done, but the story was too bland.

Old friends Pip and Posy are playing at the beach. When Pip makes a new friend, Posy is jealous. After getting ice cream, the three friends learn to play together. Once again, Pip and Posy gently model conflict resolution for preschoolers. Scheffler’s colorful gouache illustrations are detailed, but friendly for small people and depict the emotions of the animal characters beautifully. Another winner in a solid preschool series. Recommended.

Another beautiful book by Axel Scheffler - a wonderful story about friendship, sharing and making new friends! The illustrations in this book are beautiful and after reading it to my nephew he was enchanted by the wonderful pictures and couldn’t wait to turn the page! Lovely story and definitely one I will be sharing with my classes for years to come! Just wonderful!! Five stars from me!!!

Seeing the cover of the book I got excited for a second thinking it was another Julia Donaldson book, but it wasn't . We greatly enjoyed the illustrations and had a great time discussing various objects, but the story itself didn't surprise in any way.

Absolutely brilliant! My daughter loves me reading it to her again and again. I find it so cute with nice messages in it (for example when Posy gives Zac her last coin so that he can buy a new ice cream 😻). I really recommend this series and this book in particular.

I like the realistic litter on the beach, the seashore wildlife and the shells in particular. Quite liked Zac, but wasn't too keen on him being referred to as a 'boy' That jarred a bit for me. Still, a good one.

Short, interesting and enjoyable ! I think it is proper for children in all ages. Also the book gives its message in an indirect way, so it doesn’t bother the readers.
