Laura Nelson Mystery #1-4

Medicine and Mayhem; The Dr. Laura Nelson Files

Rate this book

This four book collection follows Laura Nelson from her days as a medical student in Detroit during the 1967 riots through her assent to the position of Chief of Surgery in Tampa. Tragically, at the peak of her professional success, a fall on the ice and a devastating hand injury ends her surgical career. But Laura proves resilient and lands the top research job in a large pharmaceutical company. Seven years in Laura’s life separate each of the four novels in the collection. Laura’s personal life evolves just as do the threats—initiated in the dark days of Detroit—that have haunted her along the way.

Story of a dedicated woman physician

The description of the book piqued my interest. The sale price decided the purchase. The life, trials and tribulations of a woman who was a wife and mother and against the odds became a surgeon was an excellent read. Her husband was jealous of her success but she still prevailed in her chosen field. A good read for all women.

I finished the first book where Laura graduates and has an affair, and all end well the baby born of the affair is the correct colour. That first book was good in as much as it kept your interest. And believable as long as you thought that a student in medicine can have 5 children and still pass withHonours.

I just started the second one and had to stop, the woman ( I know it is a novel) is insufferable, so full of herself and thinking she is a gift to humanity. Unforgiving given her undisclosed past. I just had to put it down. I wonder what happened but not enough to go back to it.

A career full of disasters - start to finish

The first book takes place while Dr Nelson is in medical school. The pace is a bit slow and the suspense feels forced at times. Book two Dr Nelson is framed for a murder she didn’t commit- great pacing and you grow to truly dislike her husband! Book three her hospital is attack by bioterrorists- now we’re getting to my type of booking - very exciting! Book four is the conclusion of Dr Nelson’s career and again feels a little forced in the suspense. Good series

Doctor extraordinaire

The journey of thoracic surgeon, Laura Nelson, is about resiliency and determination. Despite near death experiences, DrLaura continues to focus on family and her own situations.

Characters are believable as are insights into a mother’s love.
There is satisfactory description of Philadelphia, Detroit and Tampa.

Enjoyable read, although plot seems a little contrived in some instances.

You need to read all the four books in order to understand Dr Nelson's life. All the books relate to some medical drama that happens to or around Laura. She married Steve as soon as she finished college and started a family. Her ambition is to become a surgeon, even though family and friends tell her its impossible. She succeeds and eventually becomes Chief of Surgery in Tampa, before her life changing accident. I really enjoyed book 1 and 4 but book 2 and 3 were disappointing

Outstanding drama throughout

A truly terrific and exciting series of 4 books, each of which could be read separately, but together produce a flowing, albeit up very high and down very low, continuing storyline in the life of Laura Nelson. An absolutely outstanding story which, with all its twists and turns, becomes an imperative as a page turner. I recommend these books and this author to all readers of good literature.
