I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy! I am in a multi-year process of walking the Camino de Santiago , which is how i came upon this book. Having spent some time already on the Camino, i found Fozzie’s account to be accurate, and very entertaining. I’m sure I’ll read it again, very soon. Although I’ve never hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, I have grown up in California and heard about it all my life. I have friends who have hiked parts of it, and worked on trail crews. Fozzie’s experience added to my knowledge of the history of the PCT, the role of trail angels, and a more thorough understanding of the dedication and commitment it takes to be a thru-hiker. Finishing up with his account about the Appalachian Trail, I was left with a yearning to be younger, more adventurous, and to have the passion for hiking, or seeking freedom, that Fozzie has. He captured the camaraderie that exists on these lengthy trips, as well as the personal growth that happens with so much “alone” time. His style was informative, well-researched, and quite humorous. I have already recommended this to other friends.
A fan of the outdoors, I was looking for an escape from the conventional to allow my mind some space and happened upon 'The Last Englishman'. This book captivated me with Keith's journey on the PCT and having thoroughly enjoyed it led me to search for more books by Keith- this is when I discovered A Thru-Hiking Trilogy!
'A Journey In Between' is a beautifully written account of the Santiago del Camino- Keith's first thru- hike and left me dreaming about tackling this journey at some point in my life.
The final book in the trilogy 'Balancing on Blue' about the AT was vivid and as captivating as the other book's- if not more!
I found that I really connected with Keith's writing, humour and general out look on life. I have always enjoyed hiking and though I cannot claim to be remotely in the same league as a thru hiker, the books have allowed my mind to escape to a place I have always been happy and have got me thinking about what I would like tackle in the future.
For the time being I will have to read and dream whilst looking forward to the next installment from Keith!
I've read many hiking adventure books, but this one is truly a favorite. I felt as though I was walking right along with the author through his hiking adventures. Love the descriptions and manner to which the author painted his words in describing the natural environment to which he was immersed. How he detailed down to the minute detail...how he noticed the way the sun illuminated against the fawn's fur...
Enjoyed reading of the actual experiences. Became very tired of the writing style. The first two hikes in Spain and the PCT were more engrossing than the third, the Appalachian trail. Perhaps that particular trail is simply less satisfying. Or I just became very tired of the nicknames of the hikers and descriptions of yet another off trail breakfast. And maybe hiking through heavy woods leads to difficulty in new descriptions. Yawn.
This is an excellent series of books which conveys a great sense of place and adventure. The attraction for me is that I'd like to think that I'll do the same as Keith some day but deep down I know that this is as close as I'll get to the sense of liberation and freedom that must come from taking on demanding physical adventures. Read these books and be transported to a much simpler, kinder world.
Excellent journey through those sleepless hours in the night
This book was a leisure read I could pick up any time to get back on the trail and into nature with some interest and genuine people. It kept me company on sleepless nights that seem to creep in w ageing. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this trilogy. I can't wait to find another of Keith 's books. I highly recommend that anyone contemplating thru-hiking the AT read this book first!
After reading this tale of three epic walks, you'll wonder why you're working to live. You should be walking to live. Great book about wilderness, perseverance, and true friends.
Very engaging. I have been a runner and could relate to all the little details of learning and perfecting your "sport" of hiking. I found it fascinating and could relate in so many aspects. You have propelled me to take many great walks and I thank you for that!
For those of us with a dream of getting out in trail and leaving the modern world behind, it is a great opportunity to live out the dream vicariously through Fozzie's adventures on two of Americas long trails.
As with the previous two books of his adventures Keith Foskitts captures his journey along the Appalachian Trail in a light hearted man are, yet does not stint on sharing the fears and dangers he faced along the way.
A book that has rekindled my long dormant desire to walk the AT
