The team at specialist security firm, International Security Partners (ISP), ex-SAS officers, Jack Calder and his mate Malky McGuire; Jack’s Asian wife, former Anti-Triad fighter, May-Ling; and former London Serious Crimes Squad commander, Donnie Mullen, take on international crime barons and people-traffickers.
An explosion in the vaults of a private bank in the calm backwater of Luxembourg links to the shores of Libya and the perils of migrants in the Mediterranean, before crossing continents to drug-running cartels in Central America.
Jack and his ISP squad pitch their lethal black ops skills to combat the callous greed and brutal actions of the syndicates as they move to break the deadly impasse.
SEUMAS GALLACHER escaped from the world of finance over ten years ago, after a career spanning three continents and five decades.
As the self-professed 'oldest computer Jurassic on the planet' his headlong immersion into the dizzy world of eBook publishing opened his eyes, mind, and pleasure to the joys of self-publishing. As a former businessman, he rapidly understood the concept of a writer's need to 'build the platform', and from a standing start began to develop a social networking outreach, which now tops 50,000 direct contacts.
His first five crime-thrillers, in what has become the 'Jack Calder' series, THE VIOLIN MAN'S LEGACY; VENGEANCE WEARS BLACK; SAVAGE PAYBACK; KILLER CITY; and DEADLY IMPASSE have blown his mind with more than 100,000 e-link downloads to date. He celebrated that landmark with a Fried Mars Bar and a glass of Irn Bru.
In 2019, having ghostwritten several autobiographies for subjects in the Middle East, he decided to write his own life story, which is captured in 'STRANGELY, I'M STILL HERE'.
Often when reading a novel, spurious thoughts filter through my head about the style of the tale. In the case of Seumas Gallacher’s latest, ‘Deadly Impasse’, the fifth in his Jack Calder series, I was struck by a sense of having uncovered a lost treasure – an undiscovered Frederick Forsyth novel, yet with the hard-edged, no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners style that Gallacher’s fans have come to love from his very much twenty-first century thrillers. As usual, you won’t find any spoilers here, but author Gallacher takes a no-holds-barred look at refugee-trafficking across the Mediterranean and its possible ties to drug dealersin a tale that will grab the reader from its explosive beginning and not let them breath again until the bad guys get the point. Writing a series, especially one as varied and intense as the Jack Calder books, is a challenge which author Gallacher seems to pull off with admirable aplomb, yet in this novel, he marries a truly telling tale told with Forsyth’s depth and understanding of event planning with all the action and excitement any fan of Andy McNab could ever wish for in their wildest dreams. This series just keeps getting better and better.
I skipped to Deadly Impasse after reading the first book in the Jack Calder series. I was not disappointed. This is a fast paced and intelligent stand alone crime thriller. The ISP team follow a group of deadly drug smugglers who fund their trade through people smuggling along the North African coast. The action follows their trail through South America and ends in Cyprus. The story is particularly poignant given the huge mountains that need climbing in easing the cruel conditions of the dispossessed of today's World. Highly recommended.
When a love interest turns out to be a dangerous criminal, involved in murder, drugs trade and human trafficking, the head of the Luxembourg bank sees only one option left: to call in Jack Calder and his team. That’s the start of a lethal cat-and-mouse game…
Jack Calder Crime Series #5
Introduction The phone call of her lover shocks Francine Louvet, chief executive of Luxembourg’ Banque Louvet, but not as much as the explosion in the bank’s vaults after. Xavier, her now ex-lover, contacts Francine again to explain that the explosion was only “a nudge” to show his ‘associates’ mean business. Time for Francine to contact the Head of Interpol Europe, Marcel Benoit.
Shocking facts about Xavier’s identity make Benoit call in Jack Calder and his team of International Security Partners. It seems Xavier is a ruthless ex-French legion mercenary with his hands deep in drugs smuggling who is running a highly profitable but utterly disgusting business of human trafficking from North Africa. Jack and his men cannot wait to get their hands on the guy. Their mission: seek, destroy, eliminate.
Will they succeed and at what cost?
My Thoughts This was my first Jack Calder book and I love it! The pace is fast, the plot intriguing and intricate, the protagonists likeable and the baddies unsympathetic. I love both female protagonists, May-Ling, Jack’s wife and head of ISP, and Francine Louvet. They are strong, resilient, resourceful and committed. Whatever the costs – and they are high, as Francine will find out.
“My father instilled in me a belief that our family would hold its values regardless of our business fortunes. In that, I promise, Banque Louvet will not waver. “
– Francine Louvet
There is a substantial amount of dialogue in the thriller with quite a lot of explanations which slowed down the plot at times and the descriptions of the circumstances sometimes made me less invested in the victims – which is shocking, I fully admit, as these are horrid crimes.
However, I applaud the author for bringing these topics under the attention of the readers. He combines drugs smuggling, human trafficking, and dangerous mercenaries into one gripping thriller that draws you right in – and even makes you think like our protagonists – which is not always within the law but I easily overlooked it as I was on their side.
‘Deadly Impact’ is a gripping, adventurous, and well-crafted thriller that doesn’t shy away from societal problems as human trafficking and had me turn just one more page every time… until I reached the fab ending.
My first foray into the adventurous world of Jack Calder and his associates at ISP, and I can guarantee it will not be my last. I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting, mostly because I couldn't bear to put it down...every time I thought to myself just one more chapter, another twist in the tale kept me hanging in there. Combining the worlds of international banking and refugee trafficking could be challenging but here two very diverse topics are cleverly tied together in a very timely story given the state of the world today. Following an explosion at a large bank in Luxembourg, the CEO , Francine is persuaded to hire ISP, as it becomes clear that the explosion is just a warning of greater dangers to come. This was my first adventure with Jack and Co, and a dangerous but charming bunch of characters they turned out to be. Ex SAS officer Jack is everything you would expect from a hero with his background, and his interplay with his beautiful and clever wife May Ling is a thing of joy, their dialogue has the feel of real affection without being cheesy. Her character, from the little I have seen in this book ,definitely intrigues me and I am hoping to find more of her back story as I read the other books in this series. It's clear Mr Gallacher has an ear for dialect, one of his characters Malky is only described as being Irish, but from his idiomatic speech I had pinned him down to one specific region, and I was thrilled to find I was correct close to the end of the book. Its little authentic details like this that I treasure as a reader, as they make the whole experience more immersive. The plot, though at first appearing to be composed of very different elements is seamlessly woven together to give the reader a most satisfying conclusion , after a pacy and thrill filled read. Overall I book I would recommend to anyone seeking a well crafted thriller with lots of action, and I know what my next few kindle purchases will be! One quick note: Although this is the fifth book in an ongoing series it reads perfectly as a standalone, with any backstory the reader needs deftly filled in without reams of repetitive exposition.
This is the second book I have read in this series out of order. It would make sense to read these books in order but I had no trouble at all getting into the story and characters. Jack Calder is a strong, resilient, tough, no hole barred ex-SAS soldier who will do everything he can to help others. His wife, May-Ling, is a trained fighter in her own right and she helps to run the ISA which is a security and protection agency.
This crime series is filled with action, non-stop adventures involving drugs, people trafficking, drug lords, and all kinds of trouble for our hero, Jack Calder. Along with his co-hosts, fellow ex-SAS soldiers they band together to get the toughest jobs completed. Many times they need to go black, take no prisoners, in order to finish up their tasks.
Seamus Gallacher is a talented writer who knows how to keep his readers on the edge of his/her seat and begging for more. He has created a likable character in Jack Calder and surrounded him with other diverse personalities that add to the stories. The author has done his homework on a number of different subjects in order to make this story a believable one.
I found this book to be an enjoyable read and highly recommend it to all lovers of crime and adventures.
International criminals care only about the money and the power they have over people. When things do not go their way, they eliminate those people whom they feel are responsible for any inconvenience in obtaining it.
In Deadly Impasse, Mr. Gallacher gives the reader a thrilling adventure around that theme. A drug trafficking team, ex-Legionnaires, have lost money and are out to eliminate the persons responsible even though those people had no control of the events that led to the loss.
In aggressive counter operations, International Security Partners', an internationally known small group, protects the person at the center of the criminals’ grief. Crossing borders and continents, the action moves from one country to another leading to a surprising conclusion.
Mr. Galacher's characters are well developed and colorful since this is the fifth in his Jack Calder series. However, the book can be read alone because he flawlessly brings them alive without reference to prior books.
I still would read the others in this series as I have; each stands alone and will keep the reader's attention. All are page turners.
EXCITING STORY This is not the first book I’ve read from this author and I shall be buying and reading more of the Jack Calder series. A very down to earth story of a high level protection agency who plan carefully and ensure that justice prevails. I especially liked the inclusion of the refuge angle from Libya. There are several twists and turns, but an easy read and I finished it in one day. Recommended.
This is I believe that I have read Jack Calder. Rest assure it will not be the last time. I was steadily engrossed and this is how a book should be written.
I love a sharp dose of authenticity - when a story is told arrow-straight and fiction feels like reality, when you may have never been to a certain place or met someone like the character you're reading, and yet you feel the narrative's truth. Seamus Gallacher definitely has a gift for this...in spades. In DEADLY IMPASSE the writing is tensile-taut, the story lines are interwoven seamlessly, and all the gory details are nicely intact.
You can't imagine a gentleman like this author ever knowing an earthly thing about the underbelly of life that this novel depicts, but his writing resounds with the tone of real people imbedding a real place in time. His knowledge of international banking and refugee trafficking lends total credence. The story breathes you in and holds its breath as the tension mounts.
The language is both stark and deliciously detailed. Scorching heat and terror are the forest, and the wiles and emotions of humanity fill the spaces between the trees.
An intricate plot and fleshy, memorable characters, the expressive narrative and relentless pacing will no doubt cause DEADLY IMPASSE to be remembered as indeed one of the best action stories of the year.
I always prefer silence to sound, the image produced by words occurring in silence. That is, the thunder and the music of the prose take place in deep quiet. With DEADLY IMPASSE author Gallacher has written a novel every bit as stirring as a symphony by Wagner or Rachmaninoff. His poetic use of language keeps the mind reeling, in awe of the exquisite tableau presented. Dialog is authentic. A long-time poet myself, I have an abiding, deep appreciation for master wordsmithery. A good novelist needs three things, experience, observation, and imagination--any two of which, at times any one of which--can supply the lack of the others. Author Gallacher seems to have all three in spades. He has applied them and built, simply put, a masterpiece.
Character development in this novel is simply astounding. Seamus Gallacher has breathed life and blood into them. But don't for a minute imagine you can think ahead and guess the plot. It twists and turns like a flag flapping in the wind. You'll never see the next thing coming. Suddenly, it's just there. Your mind goes into spasms trying to wrap around it. The ending picks you up and slams you without mercy into the dirt. Then you come to and realize that therein lay redemption...and you can once again breathe.
I can always tell when an author has no experience with suffering or coming face to face with one's sins. That writer's novel is dry and shallow, with poorly contrived, gratuitous violence inserted at random spots. Thereby I can highly recommend that you immediately get your hands on DEADLY IMPASSE. I can say without reservation that author Gallacher has surely known sorrow and deep despair. It is obvious he is well acquainted with the sob-wracked nights of an unfinished soul and its pain. That, in itself, deserves reward.
A fabulous book, for sure, and well worth the price anyone pays for it!!
Alarums and excursions. Bombs and bullets. Heartache and coffee. A satisfying body count.
Why is Hollywood wasting its time with Jack Reacher when it could be better occupied making Jack Calder films?
In another cinematic novel - the fifth in the series - ISP once more goes head-to-head with the international bad guys. Under the intelligent, yet compassionate leadership of May-Ling, Jack and the boys don their night-vision goggles once more in a series of lightning raids against the forces of inhumanity. The action ranges from the bank vaults of Luxembourg to the beaches of Libya where desperate migrants seek Western sanctuary, to the drug factories of Central America, and climaxing in a "going black" raid in Cyprus.
Seumas Gallacher's page-turners take me back to my early reading days of Hammond Innes and Alastair McLean where morality was more than an empty word, and "just desserts" was the satisfying outcome of any well-crafted action adventure. Unlike some series, that peter out after a couple of books, the Jack Calder novels continue their strong and seemingly inexhaustible run.
This is the fifth book in the series about the International Security Partners and it is as good as all the other ones. The team of highly professional security experts takes on a new challenge to protect their client and the world against evil men. This book as we are used by the great bestseller author Seumas Gallacher grips you from the word go. It is a very high paced thriller and gives one little time to recover before the next action. It takes us to as far shores as Northern Africa and Central America. A book that is impossible to put away once you have started reading it. The no bullshit approach by the people from ISP makes one wish that this firm would be for real. They get things done. A really amazingly outstanding thriller like all the other books in the serie before, which would all make for excellent movies. I just hope that this fantastic author keeps them thrillers about ISP coming.
Being the fifth novel in an excellent series, “Deadly Impasse” is another thoroughly enjoyable and exciting adventure thriller as Jack Calder and the ISP boys go to the mat with a bunch of depraved international drug czars and people traffickers. It’s well written with good pace, a plot a plot as tight as a drum skin and villains worthy of the name. For fast readers, it’s definitely a page turner and a quick read. But, as is my way, I took my time with it and enjoyed it all the more. Many authors of series novels tend towards writing a serial with each book carrying links to each other; Mr. Gallacher has not fallen into that trap. I’ve had the pleasure of reading the whole Jack Calder series and in sequence. And I found each book a stand-alone adventure that can be enjoyed on its own merits, and Deadly Impasse is no different. It’s a book I’ll read again. I highly recommend it as I do for the other books in this series.
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed 3 out of 4 of the Jack Calder series (haven't read Vengeance Wears Black yet for some reason) I felt like I was meeting up with old friends and catching up on their latest escapades. Seumas has a delightful way with words. Scenarios are obviously well researched and thought out. I loved the fast paced way the characters & story moved between continents & found the people smuggling section moving & poignant especially in view of current world situations. Hoping there will be more Jack Calder stories to come & promise to read Vengeance soon! Thanks again for wonderful writing Seumas
Mr. Gallacher has done it again, another great ride with Jack Calder, May Ling and the rest of the ISP Team. He takes us to three continents, on an adventure filled with intrigue and violent shoot-outs, as the ISP Team go after villains worthy of the name.
Throughout this and other of Mr. Gallacher's work, one sees a definite demarcation between good and evil, and people who embody these characteristics. As always, the plot is tight and the tale well told, with a heavy dose of human interest and a good touch of humor.
Readers meet Jack Calder who works for a private security agency. The intrigue in this novel begins with the Banque Louvet being broken into. Francine Louvet is the CEO and her problems have just begun. Jack and his time have a mystery to solve that is a twisted thriller of crime, thrills and so much more. This is the first book I have read in the series or by this author. I found the book intriguing and well written.
